Wakakirri Experience

I had the pleasure of attending the Wakakirri competition last Monday night at the Frankston Arts Centre. Our children were competing against other schools from all over Melbourne. They told the story through dance of Gary the pigeon who had a broken wing and couldn’t fly with the rest of the pigeons. He made his way around the city by bus with a map overcoming his disability. The other pigeons were so impressed they joined him instead of flying. The message was all about acceptance of differences in others and overcoming disabilities. Well done to Mrs Ward and Ms Doutch who have

spent countless hours coaching, mentoring and encouraging the children who did a fantastic job of performing it on the night. Thank you to Mr Hughes who did the lighting, Miss Hallowell who helped with the children on the night, Ms Reid for the prop help and parents who helped with costumes. I must say that I was a very proud Principal on the night not only of their performance but also their behaviour and dedication over a long period of time. They won the best costumes and best backstage crew on the night. We will know in a couple of weeks if the children progress on to the next round. Well done to all.

There was a lot of excitement, some very big numbers and lots of laughter in the Foundation classrooms on Wednesday morning. Believe it or not, Wednesday was the 100th day our Foundation students have attended our school. The Foundation

students have been looking at all the numbers between 1 and 100 in lots of different ways and were keen to celebrate their achievements. We hope that you have enjoyed your first 100 days of school and we are looking forward to seeing what you achieve during the rest of your time at Cheltenham East Primary School.

Year 3 Overnight Camp

The Year 3 children had a fantastic time at Woorabinda Camp in Gippsland on Monday and Tuesday. They got to experience many exciting activities over the two days and more importantly have had a taste of independence away from their families in preparation for the Years 4, 5 and 6 camping programs. Thank you so much goes out to our wonderful staff who gave up family time of their own to take the children. Mr Walmsley, Mrs Price, Mrs Gabron-Uhe, Miss Savva and Ms Rookes deserve a big pat on the back for initiating a camping program in Year 3.

Professional Practice Days

All Victorian government teachers are now entitled to one professional practice day per term and teachers may use this day for planning, assessment and teaching strategies; teachers have also worked with colleagues from other schools as well. Every single minute of this release time has been used to the utmost with teams working hard to get maximum benefit. Our teachers have found this time invaluable and ultimately your children will benefit with units of learning which are thoroughly planned and meeting the needs of every child in their class. Our teaching teams meet weekly (and sometimes twice a week) for planning purposes. Our teachers are to be congratulated for the high level of commitment and dedication they put into their teaching.

Parent Opinion Survey Reminder

Our school is conducting a survey to find out what parents think of our school. The Parent Opinion Survey is an annual survey offered by the Department of Education and Training that is conducted amongst a sample of randomly selected parents. It is designed to assist schools in gaining an understanding of parents’ perceptions of school climate, student behaviour and student engagement. Our school will

use the survey results to help inform and direct future school planning and improvement strategies. Approximately 30 per cent of parents will be invited to participate in this year’s survey. All responses to the survey are anonymous. This year the Parent Opinion Survey will be conducted from Monday July 23 to Sunday August 26. The survey will be conducted online, only takes 10-15 minutes to complete, and can be accessed at any convenient time within the fieldwork period on desktop computers, laptops, tablets or smartphones. The online survey will be available in a range of languages other than English. These include: Arabic, Vietnamese, Mandarin, Chin (hakha), Hindi, Japanese, Somali, Turkish, Punjabi and Greek. The survey results will be reported back to the school at the end of September. Please contact the school office if you would like more information.

Go Fund Me Page

Sadly on Saturday 21st of April one of the dads in our community, Ben Doyle 41, unexpectedly passed away. I’m not sure how aware everyone is, but there has been a Go Fund Me page set up to help Beck Doyle in a time of need. He left behind Beck and their three children, Judd (9) Jack (4) and Romy (almost 2). It would be great to see the community get behind them. Here is the link for anyone who’d like to help them out. https://www.gofundme.com/devastion-for-the-doyle-family?member=317104

Extra-Curricular Activities

Extra-curricular activities are an important part of our school program. These activities are not compulsory curriculum areas, but complement and strengthen core curricular programs and fit into our school community ethos. It would be rare to have a week go by at Cheltenham East PS when we would not have some kind of extra-curricular activity. Teachers give up their lunchtimes in some cases to mentor the children eg Wakakirri, Art Club, Chess Club, Library time etc.

Enrolments 2019

If you know of anyone whose child is coming to our school next year, we need to have their enrolment NOW. We are starting to look at grade structures and staffing for next year and it is vital that we are as accurate as possible when it comes to projected numbers. If you know your child will not be returning to us next year (apart from our Year 6s), please let us know as soon as possible. It’s amazing what a

difference a couple of children here or there can make to our numbers.

SAME-DAY NOTIFICATION OF UNEXPLAINED STUDENT ABSENCES

New Attendance Requirements If your child is sick or absent, you are required to notify the school as soon as possible on the day of absence, by either text, email or phone call. As you know the attendance procedures have changed this year. All Victorian government schools are required to contact parents/carers as soon as practicable on the same day of an unexplained student absence. If your child is absent on a particular day and you have not contacted the school to explain why, the absence will be marked as unexplained. This system also promotes daily school attendance. Going to school every day is the single most important part of your child’s education, they learn new things every day – missing school puts them behind.

The correct procedures were sent out last week and I am just reinforcing those changes which will help you with the process.

Approved absences are for student illness, medical appointments and family holidays (please advise us of holidays in advance).

Unapproved absences are instances when your child has the option of coming to school and doesn’t attend eg: shopping expeditions, outings with visitors, etc.

1. CONTACT DETAILS

There are times when we will need to contact you, including on the day if your child is absent

and you haven’t informed the school as to why. Do we have your most up to date contact details? If not, please contact the school on 03 9583 5746 so we can update our records. Please include parent/carers’ name, address, phone numbers, email address and emergency contact details. Please remember to contact the school if any of these details or your circumstances change. 2. NOTIFY THE SCHOOL OF YOUR CHILD’S

ABSENCE

Protecting the safety and wellbeing of children through the reporting and monitoring of absenteeism is the responsibility of both parents/carers and schools. Please remember to call the school on the answering machine 03 9584 7240 or email at [email protected] or log your child’s child’s absence using our school’s Flexibuzz app early in the morning if your child is going to be away or late for school so your child’s absence can be recorded correctly. For further information on the processes and procedures our school uses to record, monitor and follow-up student attendance and absence please read our Attendance Policy on the school web site. 3. SAME-DAY NOTIFICATION OF

UNEXPLAINED STUDENT ABSENCES

Our school will text/call you as soon as practicable on the day if a student is not at school and you haven’t notified the school as to why. If you are notified by the school that your child is away without a reason, please contact us as soon as possible by either texting using the Flexibuzz app, calling 03 9584 7240 or emailing on [email protected] to let us know where your child is. If we cannot reach you because we don’t have your correct contact details (i.e.: message notification fail, disconnected number), then we will make contact with any emergency contact/s nominated on your child’s file held by the school, where possible, on the same day of the unexplained absence. Please remember it is your responsibility to contact us to provide an explanation for your child's absence from school, and where possible, please inform us in advance of upcoming absences.

For further information on the processes and procedures our school uses to record, monitor and follow-up student attendance and absence please read our Attendance Policy on the school website. Our school uses SMS/text to contact parents/carers as soon as practical on the day on an unexplained student absence. Notifying the school of your child’s absence either prior to, or on the day that they will be away, helps ensure the safety and wellbeing of children and will fulfil your legal responsibility.

4. LATE ARRIVAL TO SCHOOL

If your child will be arriving after the 9.00 am bell, please sign him/her in at the school office. If you know in advance ie an appointment, please advise the school or class teacher of the reason so that the teacher is aware and will not mark your child ‘unexplained’.

CEPS KIDS ARE

FRIENDLY KIDS

This term we are working on

CO-OPERATION

and next week we are looking at

Suggesting & Persuading

Don’t be a ‘bossy boots.’ Use good

ideas and good reasons instead. People don’t like being around other people

who give orders, criticise all the time and are

bossy when they try to make people do things.

The best way to convince others to do what you

want and to co-operate with you, is to make

suggestions and give good reasons for your

suggestions. A suggestion allows others the

choice of agreeing to do what you would like or

not.

When SUGGESTING remember to:

* Make a suggestion in a polite voice, make

it sound like you are asking a

question.

* You could make your suggestion in one of

the following ways:

o Why don’t we…

o Let’s…

o Perhaps we could…

o Let’s try…

o How about…

o Maybe we could…

* Give good reasons for why it is a good

idea.

When SUGGESTING remember NOT to: o Be bossy

o Order people about

o Criticise others

o Get angry if others don’t like your idea

OPERA VISIT: On 26th July the Grade 3-6 students were fortunate

to be entertained by singers from the Australian Opera, in a musical

performance called ‘By the Light of the Moon’. This comical opera

incorporated many well known nursery rhymes and delighted

students and teachers.

‘What A Knight’ Have you seen any knights in shining armour charging up and down the hallway recently? Perhaps a dragon, princess, King Arthur, Queen Guinevere, some squires or the evil Black Knight? If so, you have probably come across rehearsals for our upcoming production, ‘What A Knight’ to be performed on Wednesday 12th September at Kingston Town Hall. All grades are learning and practising their class items and Grade 6 students are busily memorising lines and attending many lunchtime rehearsals. For those families new to the school who may not be aware of the concert procedure, here is a brief outline: All students participate in a class item in the school concert, with the Grade 6’s taking on the acting roles. Most costume items will be provided to you, with a parent rep from each class co-ordinating fittings etc.

In late August we will be having a ‘pre-recording’ day, where each class will be

recorded onto a backing track here at the school (date to be advised)

Monday 10th September- Full dress rehearsal in the SCHOOL hall all day.

Tuesday 11th September- Full rehearsal in the SCHOOL hall- NO costumes.

Wednesday 12th September- Concert day!! Students travel by bus from school to

Kingston Town Hall for dress rehearsal and Matinee performance. Students will

return to school by 3.30pm for normal pick up and parents/carers must bring them

back to Kingston Hall in the evening for the night performance.
