“However long and arduous the road that must be travelled, we are confident in our fortitude and determination to see the journey through.”
ZEZHONG LI Chemical Engineering Program
CHBE at UBC was a rollercoaster. From hard courses, countless assignments and multiple exams, to friendships and memories that will never be forgotten. The entire experience has made us who we are, and I am proud to have been a part of it.

Established in 1908, UBC is the oldest university in British Columbia. The University of British Columbia is a global centre for teaching, learning and research, consistently ranking among the top 20 public universities in the World and recently recognized as North America’s most international university.
In the 2019 Academic Ranking of World Universities, UBC placed 35th and 2nd in Canada. This is echoed in the 2020 Times Higher Education World University Rankings, which placed UBC as 34th best university in the world and 2nd in Canada, and in the 2020 U.S. News & World Report Best Global University Ranking, in which UBC was positioned as the 30th best University in the world. Importantly, all of these independent studies cite UBC as being among the 20 best Public Universities worldwide, making clear the tremendous value of a UBC education and degree.
Graduates, and current and former faculty of UBC include over 200 Fellows of the Royal Society of Canada, 8 Nobel laureates, over 70 Rhodes scholars and over 65 Olympians, and many fellows of both the US National Academy of Arts and Sciences and the Royal Society. Three Prime Ministers of Canada, including Canada’s first female prime minister Kim Campbell and our current Prime Minister Justin Trudeau have been educated at UBC.
Since 1915, UBC’s motto, Tuum Est (It is Yours), has been a declaration of its commitment to attracting and supporting those who have the drive to shape a better world. As a result, UBC students, faculty and staff continue to embrace innovation and challenge the status quo, placing us at the forefront of discovery, learning and engagement. UBC encourages bold thinking, curiosity and initiative, helping all to realize their greatest potential.

I want to congratulate you on completing your degree in Chemical and Biological Engineering (CHBE). You should be extremely proud!
The current COVID-19 pandemic has given all of us reason to reflect on our lives and our purpose. I think about friends and family and their well-being, as well as the little things we all take for granted, like dining out or in with groups of friends. But mostly I have found myself reflecting on what makes our department so special. It is each and every one of you — our students, faculty and staff — and your inspiring efforts to solve society’s current challenges and help reestablish a prosperous, safe, connected, and inclusive World. While it is easy to dwell on negatives in times like this, I want to encourage you all to keep viewing this generational event as an opportunity to reshape our World for the better using your engineering skills.
Those skills are needed more than ever. They are also considerable. UBC is ranked as one of the top 20 Public Universities in the World, and the quality of our CHBE Department, its faculty and staff, and its entire student body are an important reason why. As a graduate of our Department, you join an exceptional group of alumni who are leaders in companies and universities across Canada and throughout the World that are providing solutions to many of the World’s most pressing challenges - green technologies and processes to convert renewable natural resources into the vast array of products currently required by society, advanced fuel cells, batteries and photovoltaics that provide clean energy while reducing use of gasoline and other fossil fuels, and the discovery and manufacture of revolutionary chemicals and materials that will help ensure a sustainable society and planet.
WELCOME FROM DR. CHARLES HAYNESHEAD OF THE DEPARTMENT OF CHEMICAL AND BIOLOGICAL ENGINEERING
Is it any wonder that UBC was just ranked by the Times Higher Education as number one in the World for taking urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts. UBC’s research and training on climate change, green energy and the engineering of a sustainable World are unparalleled, and many of those contributions come from the collective efforts of our Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering. We therefore rank 1st in Canada for our work towards ensuring sustainable and affordable energy.
Ahead of and in response to the Covid-19 pandemic, we are also developing pharmaceuticals, medical devices and drug-delivery systems needed to improve human health, as well as advanced technologies to provide clean drinking water and safe foods to all people, including those living in the most impoverished countries and communities. You have all helped in that important effort, and I’ve merely scratched the surface of what you all do and provide. Each day, you and all of our other terrific talent are providing innovative solutions for this and future generations.
Our core mission is to fully prepare you to be leaders of industry and society. Constantly improving your engineering skills and value to society are our guiding principles, and as a graduate of one of our degree programs you have seen those principles at work not only in our classrooms, but also in our research laboratories, community and industry partnerships, entrepreneurial ventures, student organizations, and outreach activities. The broad and potent set of skills you acquired have therefore positioned you well for a productive career.
We are very proud of each and every one of you and look forward to the many contributions you will make to bettering our World.

STUDENT AWARDS
Select CHBE awards are given annually to our graduating students. They are awarded based on merit and community service, respecting donor requests. No applications are required to the awards committee, and all students meeting the stipulations of the awards are automatically considered. CHBE students also are automatically considered for Applied Science awards which may be rotated through departments.
CAPSTONE DESIGNS AWARDSThe undergraduate programs culminate in a significant student design experience delivered through a Capstone Design course. Students carry out the design and economic assessment of a major, environmentally-sound process in chemical and/or biological engineering. Students work in teams under the supervision of a faculty advisor and, when possible, mentored by a practising professional engineering from industry to ensure relevance and quality.
APSC DESIGN AND INNOVATION CAPSTONE AWARDSBased on the design course faculty instructors’ assessments and evaluations, the top Capstone projects in the Chemical Engineering and the Chemical & Biological Engineering programs are recognized with the Applied Science and Innovation Design Award.
