C&PE's Has Big Showing at the 2018 Capitol Graduate Research Summit The 2018 Capitol Graduate Research Summit was held in the State Capitol, Topeka, on the 27th of March, 2018. Earlier this year, eight students were selected among over a hundred to represent the University of Kansas, Lawrence Campus, at the 2018 Capitol Graduate Research Summit. Judges from other Kansas Universities (Emporia State University, Fort Hays State University, Kansas State University, Pittsburg State University, University of Kansas Medical Center, and Wichita State University) and staff from the BioKansas Corporation evaluated their work. C&PE had three out of the eight finalists. Congratulations to Tugba Turnaoglu for her BioKansas Presentation Award! Tugba (pic: right, upper) is a Doctoral Candidate who works under Mark Shiflett in the Shiflett Research Group. The BioKansas Award was presented to her at the Summit. We would also like to congratulate Sayantani Basu (pic: below, right), who works under Arghya Paul, and Charles Shaughnessy (pic: right, lower), who works under Kevin Leonard. They were two of the eight finalists who also presented at the summit. If you are interested in learning more about Tugba, Sayantani, and Charles' presentations, click here. This award is supported by the National Institute of Health (NIH) and will aid his research for the 2018-2019 academic year. The purpose of the Kansas INBRE (K-INBRE) is to strengthen the ability of Kansas researchers to compete effectively for NIH funds by building a “critical mass” of junior and senior investigators, as well as undergraduates, graduate students, and post- doctoral fellows supported with cutting edge technology within a scientific research theme. The program brings together NIH-funded mentors, trainees, and promising new investigators from each of the three Scientific Partner Institutions to drive forward a major statewide initiative to build Kansas strength in this critical life sciences research area. First Place in the Mid-Continental SPE Undergrad Paper Contest Nazirah Mohd (above), a Senior in Petroleum Engineering graduating this spring, won First Place for her research paper this April at the Mid -Continental SPE North American Student Paper Contest. The title of her paper is “Identification of Critical Micelle Concentration to Reduce Interfacial Tension Near Fracture Face in Shale Reservoirs.” She has been working on experiments related to this project since January. This award win qualifies her to present at the Annual Technical Conference and Exhibition (ATCE) International Paper Contest which will be held in Dallas, TX from September 24-26th. Nazirah would like to thank Dr. Reza Barati for his mentorship and guidance throughout this process. Congratulations, Nazirah! First Place in Biomedical Sciences Symposium Poster Competition Sayantani Basu (below), a Doctoral student studying Chemical Engineering, has received First Place at KU’s Annual Biomedical Symposium. This symposium was a joint effort between the Higuchi Biosciences Center, the NIH-sponsored Chemical Biology Training Program, and the NIH-sponsored Biotechnology Training Program. There were over 50 posters at the competition, mostly from students with a Pharmaceutical background, so earning First Place was no easy feat. Sayantani has been working with her research advisor, Arghya Paul, since Spring of 2016. Congratulations, Sayantani! To learn more about the Symposium, click here.
