    Instructor: Dr. L.J.J. Catalan

    Office: CB4082B

    Phone: 343-8573

    Email: [email protected]

Lecture/Tutorial Hours: Mon. and Wed.: 11:30-1:00pm; Wed: 4-5:00pm

Course URL: This course has a site on the AD server (K:\ eng4432). Ensure that you have

access to it. You must check the site at least on a weekly basis for course updates.

Textbook: Seider, W.D., Seader, J.D., Lewin, D.R., Widagdo, S., Product and Process

    Design Principles, 3rd

    Edition, Wiley, 2009.

    Topics Discussed:

    1. Overview of the Design Process

    2. Process Creation (Chapter 4)3. Process Heuristics (Chapter 6)4. Plant Location and Layout

    5. Environmental Considerations

    6. Property Prediction Methods7. Mass and Energy Balances with Unisim (Chapter 5)

    8. Separation Tower Design (Chapter 19)

    9. Design of Azeotropic Separations (Chapter 8)

    10. Heat Exchanger Design (Chapter 18)11. Reactor Design (Chapter 7)

    12. Design of Pumps, Compressors and Expanders (Chapter 20)

    13. Teamwork and Reporting for the Plant Design Project

    Assessment:

Numerical grades will be assigned as follows:

    Pop quizzes: 22.5%

    Midterm Exam: 22.5%Final Exam: 45%

Assignments: 10% of the overall course mark if the combined average of written exams

(midterm exam, final exam, and quizzes) is at least 55%. If the combined average of written exams

is less than 55%, then the assignments will be discounted from the final mark.

    Notes:

    - Academic dishonesty in assignments and laboratory reports (e.g., copying or lending your work for

copying by others) will result in a penalty of -10% on the total course grade for each offense.

    - Evidence of academic dishonesty in examinations and quizzes will be prosecuted according to the

Code of Student Behaviour and Disciplinary Procedures (https://www.lakeheadu.ca/faculty-and-

    staff/policies/student-related/code-of-student-behaviour-and-disciplinary-procedures).

    - Short unannounced quizzes (up to 20 min) will be held during lecture and/or lab times. Any

unattended quiz will be given an automatic grade of zero. The grade obtained on your worst quiz will

be ignored in the calculation of your overall grade. There is substantial scientific evidencedemonstrating the benefits of unannounced quizzes on student performance (e.g.,

    Student Learner Outcomes:

ENGI4432:1Prepareprocess flowsheets involving reactions, separations, and T-P change operations toachieve desired products given thermophysical property data.

ENGI4432:2Executematerial and energy balances on process flowsheets using process simulation

    software.

ENGI4432:3Use appropriate methods, including process simulation software, to design separation

    towers.

ENGI4432:4Use appropriate methods, including process simulation software, to design heat

    exchangers.

ENGI4432:5Use appropriate methods, including process simulation software, to design chemical

    reactors.

ENGI4432:6Use appropriate methods, including process simulation software, to design pumps,

    compressors, and expanders.

ENGI4432:7Useappropriate methods to estimate the cost of pressure vessels, separation towers, heatexchangers, reactors, pumps and compressors.

ENGI4432:8Usechemical engineering principles and process simulation software to analyze

relationships between process variables, optimize process conditions, and adapt to changes in process

conditions.ENGI4432:9Prepareplant layouts accounting for safety, operation and maintenance considerations.

ENGI4432:10Applythe principles of waste minimization andselectappropriate effluent treatmentmethods.

ENGI4432:11 Useprint and electronic library resources to access information for designing chemical

    plant.

ENGI4432:12Discusseffective teamwork strategies for plant design

ENGI4432:13Describethe reporting requirements for plant design projects.

ENGI4432:14Demonstrateprofessionalism by submitting assignments in a timely manner.
