PURPOSETo ensure all personnel understand the emergency procedures in case of chemical spills in thelaboratory.

PROCEDURE
I. Minor Chemical Spill
Small spills (< 1 Liter and does not present an immediate fire, safety, environmental or healthhazard).
Alert people in immediate area of spill.
Wear additional protective equipment - including safety goggles, gloves, long-sleeve lab coat.
Avoid inhale of spill vapors.
Confine spill to small area.
Use appropriate kit to neutralize and absorb inorganic acids and bases. Collect the residue, andplace in a container.
Contact site Environment Supervisor to assist for disposal.
For other chemicals, use appropriate kit or absorb spill with vermiculite, dry sand, ordiatomaceous earth.
Collect residue, place in container and dispose as chemical waste.
Clean spill area with water.
For mercury spill, it is cleaned up with using mercury kit that consists of Mercury vacuum pump,eyedropper, water or vacuum drive aspirator (optional), chemical amalgam, laboratory coat,gloves, shoe protectors, glass or plastic collection container, plastic bags, wipes or paper towelsand barricade tape

II. Major Spill
Large Spills(> 1 Liter or a material presents an immediate fire, safety, environmental, or healthhazard regardless of quantity). Examples: Spill of greater than 1 Liter of Organic solvent, Crude oil,strong acids or bases or any quantity of highly volatile organics, and mercury compounds.
Stop work
Turn off any ignition sources nearest to the spill
In case of injured personnel, evacuate to clinic.
Leave laboratory hood on.
Evacuate laboratory and close door
Secure lab, i.e., keep others out of the lab, and inform Handil RSES.
RSES will ask HSE service to contact emergency team.
Laboratory personnel are remain near lab until assistance arrives
