Introduction
OGraham’s Law: The rate at which a gas diffuses is inversely proportional to the square root of the mass of its particles.
MaterialsO 2-3 cm diameter glass tubeO Meter stickO 2 Q-tip halvesO 12 M concentrated hydrochloric acidO 15 M concentrated ammonium
hydroxide
Procedure O Put on safety eyewear for whole
experimentO Place glass tube squarely on tableO Place bottle of concentrated HCL
near end of glass tube. Place bottle of concentrated ammonium hydroxide near other end.
ProcedureO Remove stopper from bottle and
insert Q-Tip into liquid.O Place on opposite ends of glass tube. O Record time and place stopper back
on bottle.
ProcedureO Mark inner most tip on Q-Tip on glass
tube.O Mark where two gases have met.O Remove Q-Tips.O Clean up area
Done!O You’ve proven Graham’s Law!
Congratulations!
