SBA Annual Conference
(25 Oct 2014)

Supervisors’ Remarks
Chemistry : 14965 students (435 schools) submitted SBA marks CS(Chem) : 3377 students (191 schools) submitted SBA marks
Moderation (statistical methods and professional judgment) Chemistry :65.3% of schools within expected range
13.0% of schools higher than expected 21.7% of schools lower than expected
CS(Chem) : 70.5% of schools within expected range 11.6% of schools higher than expected 17.9% of schools lower than expected
For those higher or lower than expected, majority only deviate slightly from expected range
2
In SBA context, V.A. should aim at training and assessing basic
experimental skills for volumetric analysis.
Supervisors’ Remarks
Scope and depth of Q.A. need not be similar to those of the ALChemistry Practical Examination. The minimum requirements forQ.A. are just simple tests on cations, and/or anions.
EXPT should be experiments similar to those suggested in the Curriculum and Assessment Guide, but for ‘Chemistry’, they should be other than V.A. and Q.A., while for ‘CS(Chem)’, they should be other than V.A.
Worksheet, quiz and brief / detailed laboratory report, etc. are all acceptable. However, writing detailed laboratory reports is definitelya good training.
Providing feedback to students’ submitted reports is important forfacilitating students’ improvement. Students should be encouraged todiscuss with teachers to understand their own performance.
3
Submission of Experiment List for S5 / S6 • Some experiment lists were submitted late to district coordinators
• Some lists were found very different from the provided template format
• Incomplete list: only titles of SBA assessed experiments were included in the experiment list
• Over‐simplified experiment titles (e.g. QA01, VA01, EXPT01) are not accepted
4
Experiment List Format:
• Teachers may modify the format of the template
• To facilitate district coordinators’ checking, advised to have one similar to the provided template
5
• The experiment list should include all the experiments performed.
• QA (BCA) Detection of cations / anions.
• Organic functional group identification EXPT
6
Mark Submission
Students’ Written Works (Reports, worksheets, quizzes)
Basic requirement of SBA
Performance in Carrying Out Experiments
Optional
Should be indicated clearly on the submitted students’ works samples
Students’ Attitude Should not be assessed in SBA
7
Mark Submission Marks (10, 9, 8 ……… ) Preferred
Grades (A, B, C, ……….) Acceptable
Provide Mark/Grade conversion tables for coordinators’ reference
Marking standards among different classes in the same school • Teachers should perform school‐based standardization, to
standardize the SBA tasks and marking standards.
• Students in a school should be assessed on tasks of similar nature, complexity and required skills.
8
Mark Submission • Narrow mark distributions within a class
• Some extreme cases, most students got very high marks / most students got very low marks
• Recommendation: Teachers may modify the task requirements / worksheet items according to the general abilities of the students in a class.
Teachers may:
• Add some challenging items for classes of more able students
• Add some simple / basic items classes of less able students
9
Submission of Scanned Students’ Works • Missing reports
• Missing pages in the scanned PDF file (extreme case: all even pages were missing)
• Only students’ answers on the worksheet. No clear descriptions about the tasks were included. (Recommend: include the lab manual in the scanned file)
• Faint handwritings on the scanned pages (Avoid using pencils or light‐coloured pens for completing the worksheets)
10
Worksheet / Quizzes • If the worksheets used were adopted from textbooks or
provided by publishers, ensure the students cannot obtain the standard/reference answers before the SBA session.
• Teachers may make appropriate modifications to the standard worksheets
• For quizzes, the questions should be closely related to the performed experiment.

S5 + S6 (2015 Exam) Requirements
13
School Year
Chemistry
Minimum number of assessment marks
Subject weighting
S5 2 10%
S6 2 10%
Over the two years of S5 and S6, there should be at least one mark for Volumetric Analysis (VA), one mark for Qualitative Analysis (QA) and two marks for Other Experiments (EXPT).
Investigative Study (IS) can be done in lieu of Other Experiments (EXPT). In this case, one mark on ‘planning’ and one mark on ‘process and reporting’ should be awarded. These two marks can satisfy the minimum requirement for Other Experiments (EXPT).

When to submit
7 Jan – 28 Jan 2015
SBA Marks, Student Work and Teacher Document (Expt. Lists) share the same submission period.
Please submit SBA marks to principal for endorsement in advance to allow sufficient time for completion of other submissions.
23
Points to note before submission
Formal approval from HKEAA is required for exemption of SBA marks. If a student has fulfilled the minimum requirements, exemption is not required. No need to enter any symbol in the respective mark cell(s).

Reminders Only student work with marks submitted to HKEAA are required. The work for each student should be zipped to one single file if the work contains more than one file.
75
Reminders If scanning needed is, advise students to use A4 paper to do their homework. If one or two reports were lost, mark in the first page of the student work file, e.g. Chan Tai Man has lost report #2 and #5. Attach questions/guidelines in the student work file for the convenience of checking by District Coordinators.
76
Reminders Suggested file naming convention:
[Subject Abbreviation] [(6‐digit Student Document Number)].[File extension]
e.g. CHEM(123456).zip CHEM(362880).pdf CSCHM(246800).doc
Student Document Number is the beginning 6 digits of the identity document of a student.
77
Reminders The system only accepts file formats of zip, pdf, txt, doc, docx, rtf, ppt, pptx, xls, xlsx, csv, mp4, mp3, mpg, wmv, avi, jpg or tif. The file size limit for each student’s work file is 10MB.
78
Reminders Teacher Document for Chemistry, means S5+S6 List of Experiments performed. Please make use of the template provided at HKEAA website:

79
Request for a change of student(s) for work submission If the work of any chosen student cannot be located, or involves any irregularities (such as mark penalty being imposed due to partial plagiarism or late submission), the Subject Panel should contact the SBA Team at 3628 8068. Subject Panel should download the ‘Change of Student Work for SBA Work Submission’ form from ‘Mark Reports’ under ‘Reports’ menu.
80
81
Request for a change of student(s) for work submission Complete the section for the school and fax the form to 3628 8091. After confirming the arrangement, the HKEAA will fax the amended form to the school for school’s record.
