THE

How did life metamorphose from CHEMICAL REACTIONS ?

Page 2: Chemosynthetic theory

“Life is the cumulative product of interactions among the many kinds of chemical substances that make up the

cells of an organism.”

-Neil A. Campbell

Page 3: Chemosynthetic theory

At first, it seems unbelievable that life is made through a series of chemical

reactions…

Page 4: Chemosynthetic theory

Scientists have developed a theory that describes how the very first microscopic life

could have evolved as a result of a SERIES OF CHEMICAL REACTIONS.

This is the

chemosynthetictheory

The Chemosynthetic Theory

Chemosynthesis can be divided into

six stages.

Page 7: Chemosynthetic theory

THE FIRST PHASERandom molecules form simple organic molecules with energy provided by the sun.

Hydrocarbon chains

THE SECOND PHASE

The simple organic molecules formed in the 1st stage bond to create major organic macromolecules.

Amino acids They combine…Peptides and proteins

hydrocarbonssugars

Fat molecules

carbohydrates They unite…

They form starches & other complex sugars

Page 10: Chemosynthetic theory

THE THIRD PHASE

Development of aggregates of molecules, called coacervates.

The macromolecules are organized into bodies of definite shape, unity and properties which resemble those of living things.

They are theorized to have been the early ancestors of cells ! :o

Page 11: Chemosynthetic theory

THE 4th, 5th and 6th PHASE

Nucleic Acids appear and help in the development of

the coacervates.Nucleic acids

There is an improvement in organization of the coacervates.

It shows the beginning of evolutionary development.

LIFE HAS ARISEN !

AUTOTROPHIC BACTERIA APPEARS…

Page 12: Chemosynthetic theory

TWO MAIN DIFFICULTIES

• THE DESCRIBED TRANSITION FROM CHAOS TO ORGANIZATION

HOW DID A BUNCH OF CHEMICAL ELEMENTS TRANSFORM INTO ORGANIZED LIVING FORMS?

• THE APPEARANCE OF ENZYMESHOW DID ENZYMES COME INTO EXISTENCE?

THEY ARE STRUCTURES THAT ARE EXTREMELY TASK-SPECIFIC.

The Chemosynthetic Theory is still basically impossible to conclusively

prove.
