Dear Community Partners,In a day when it seems like things keep getting harder, distraction is constant, and the noise is louder, one thing stands true - the immeasurable change that can be created by a dedicated few. Such is the family that we call Catholic Charities - an alliance of staff, volunteers, board members, donors and compassionate community members. It is this band of few that drives positive change in our community.

We thank you for being the driving force behind all we do. It is our hope that the pages that follow will inspire you to continue to do good work; to share the gift of hope and compassion with those around you. Our commitment to you is to build a just and compassionate society rooted in the dignity of all people. As good stewards of this mission we will continue to reduce poverty, promote healthy individual and family life, collaborate with faith communities and advocate for justice and peace.

As the new Executive Director of Catholic Charities of Chemung and Schuyler, I am humbled that I was selected to build upon the good work of my predecessors, at a time when we face great and changing economic and political challenges, to put our compassion and caring into action. Stepping into my challenging new role, my intentions are threefold: to strengthen our mission by growing our relationship with the Catholic parishes and faith communities in general; to strengthen our financial capacity so that we can continue our good work; and to strengthen our delivery of residential services through partnerships that create more housing opportunities for our clients to graduate to independent living.

My desire is that all who come in contact with us will know our compassion and caring. Thank you for partnering with Catholic Charities. Your commitment is truly inspiring.

Respectfully,

Charles NoceraExecutive Director

Sometimes it’s just about fueling the passion. Jessica is no stranger to hard work. She and her six siblings were raised by a single mother. She recalls watching her mother struggle, but she was able to keep all the kids together. When Jessica became pregnant in high school with her son, she could have easily stumbled into the same cycle of poverty that she had been in during her childhood. Instead, a fire was ignited. Jessica moved out at 17 years old, finished high school, worked and completed her Associate’s in Business Administration and Bachelor’s in Sociology. In addition to her son, Jessica had three girls, the bulk of the time raising them as a single mother. “I’m a very strong woman and I have my faith,” states Jessica. “I know everything is going to be ok and what’s not ok, I make ok. As a single mother, you don’t have time to let things fall down.” Jessica has plans to continue her education with her ultimate goal being her doctorate.

Jessica’s ambition extends beyond her education - “it’s always been a dream of mine to own a home. I want to break the stereotypes. My mom couldn’t make it, but I know that I will.” And with that ambition, Jessica looked into Catholic Charities’ First Time Homebuyer Program (FTHB) and began attending the preliminary homebuyer workshops. It was at these meetings that Jessica met her lender from Elmira Savings Bank and learned the ins and outs of owning her first home. Jessica credits Jane Sokolowski, FTHB Housing Counselor, and the FTHB Program for her success, “they made this dream a reality.”

On Jan 25, 2013, Jessica and her four children stepped through the threshold of their new home. When asked “what does it mean to you to own your home?” she answered, “Stability, security, a place of belonging and a step up for my children.” It took Jessica a year to find her home, but with the guidance and support provided by the FTHB program, she was successful.

When asked about the FTHB program, Jessica responded, “Wonderful, wonderful, wonderful program! I was so impressed with the workers. They were so welcoming. I was really worried at one point because I didn’t know much about this process. But Jane was there. She was such a wonderful inspiration for me.”

Jessica - Breaking Down Barriers

What’s even more impressive is the ripple effect Jessica will have on our community. As a Family Advocate with the Economic Opportunity Program (EOP) in Elmira, she ambitiously works to help children and their families. Jessica also wants to take that mentality further in the community by planning to hold summer block parties in her neighborhood as an opportunity to meet and motivate her neighbors. Jessica emphasizes, “I see the future. I don’t see it for what it is now; I see it for what it’s going to be. And I want to be a part of that.” The work of Catholic Charities is about meeting people where they’re at. For Jessica, it was about fanning the flame that already existed and adding guidance and support when she needed it the most.

Stability can mean the difference between success and failure. For Raymond, a life-altering injury, job loss and depression consumed every bit of consistency in his life. The child of a broken home, Raymond was routinely left on his own at the young age of 14. As an adult, he experienced a stable life, working with his father in auto parts and then estates for nearly 20 years. However, a tragic accident changed everything. Raymond fell 20 feet which shattered several bones in his foot. This injury has plagued him for the last ten years since it’s impossible for him to walk an extended distance and it’s stifled his ability to find consistent employment. This combination led to Raymond’s homelessness and deepening depression.

Raymond - Peace of Mind

9

Page 11: Chemung & Schuyler County Catholic Charitiesthis band of few that drives positive change in our community. We thank you for being the driving force behind all we do. It is our hope

Over the next ten years, Raymond lost his apartment and his job and began couch-surfing from friend’s house to friend’s house. He was completely homeless five times, lost 35 lbs. from malnutrition and lacked medical prescriptions (to reduce his depression and acid reflux) and eye glasses. When asked about his life’s direction if he hadn’t received help, Raymond hauntingly responded, “I don’t know, I’d probably be dead. There were some mental health issues. When I came here (Schuyler Outreach), it was the first time I really tried to remedy the situation.”

That first visit to Catholic Charities’ Schuyler Outreach came in April 2011 on a referral from Schuyler Health Check, a local free clinic. Raymond had come to a crossroads. Homeless and depressed, Catholic Charities assisted Raymond with food from the pantry, prescriptions, food stamp enrollment, and together with DSS, temporary housing. The process did not stop there. Raymond applied for disability and Section 8 Housing. Then he began his search for housing. His hard work and the efforts of Catholic Charities’ case manager, Nancy Brand, paid off when Raymond moved into his new apartment in September 2012. Utilizing Catholic Charities’ Supported Housing Program funds, Raymond continues to receive case management support while living independently in the community.

When asked, “how do you feel about your life now? What feels different?” Raymond paused then stated, “Stable.” This was followed by laughter, “for once… I don’t have to worry.” It was then asked, “how long has it been since you felt that way?” Raymond responded, “Twenty years…really.”

It is amazing what kindness and stability can inspire in someone. Raymond has come a long way from homelessness. He is still a scavenger - always on the lookout for abandoned treasures - a gift he utilized in furnishing his whole apartment. But he is also much more responsible, opening and collecting his bills in the briefcase he found. He brings his briefcase to every meeting with Ms. Brand to discuss his budgeting. There is also something else different about Raymond, a gleam of hope in his eyes. For every person in the deep grips and despair of poverty, Catholic Charities is their partner in the fight. Because there is always hope.
