ne more week. Thats all thatwe have left of summer. Tech-nically, there are about four

weeks left, but in the lives of us NewJersey residents, next Wednesday when most schools go back in sessionfor the 2014-2015 year marks the endto our summer.

No more beach. No more pool. Nomore fun OK, maybe thats a bit dra-matic.

But its not all doom and gloom withsummer gone. In fact, theres plenty tobe excited about, and weve been hardat work covering this excitement al-ready.

Our senior associate editor, NickCohen, loves this time of year. Thatsbecause the end of August means thestart of one of his passions coveringsports. Nick has been on the summersports camp trail for a week or so now,and he will continue to be out andabout on local fields as our high school

teams continue to prepare for the up-coming season.

Soon, youll see some of the photosNick and our other editors have takenat these camps. Soon, youll begin read-ing more about the teams, players andcoaches who are involved in the gamesthey love. And soon, in two weeks to beexact, youll be receiving The Sunsregular High School Fall Sports Pre-view guide.

Our fall sports preview special sec-tion is a stand-alone piece previewingeach high school fall sport, with fullschedules for the entire season and fea-ture stories as well.

Nick is reaching out to every highschool coach and athletic director forthe fall season for the section. Butwere calling on parents, coaches andeven players to participate as well.

Sports will be a major focus of up-coming issues of The Sun, as youllsoon see. And not just high school var-sity sports. We want to cover the JVand freshmen teams, as well as all thecommunity sports teams.

But we cant do it all by ourselves. We need the help of the extended com-munity.

Have a story idea, a score, a picture?Send it over.

If we cant send an editor out to do afull-length story and photoshoot, wellmake sure your team, sport, league orclub is still covered.

Our doors are always open as areour phone lines and inboxes. Letsmake this fall sports season one to re-member!

The Camden CountyRecreation FacilityGrant Program provides

Thegrants, funded throughthe Camden County Open Space Preserva-tion Trust Fund, are presented to localrecreation programs that keep our kids onthe field and youth sports vibrant in ourarea.

Thanks to this program, key recreationimprovement projects have been indenti-fied to enhance the quality of life for resi-dents across Camden County. In manycases, these projects would not have beenconsidered to be undertaken with strainedlocal resources. Every year these grants arefunding important projects. This yearsprojects are no different, from playgroundand athletic field additions to new multi-usetrails and facility improvements at commu-nity centers.

The Freeholder Board approved the rec-ommendations of the Advisory Committeeto award the 2014 Recreation Facility En-hancement Project Grants at our Augustmeeting. We are now in the process of vis-iting the municipal organizations that havebeen identified for funding. This years ap-plications represented a wide range of proj-ects throughout the county to keep ourfields green and our kids active. We appre-ciate the hard work and planning that wentinto each request.

This year, Camden County RecreationFacility Grant Program grants will benefitworthwhile projects in Audubon Park, Bell-mawr, Berlin Township, Brooklawn, Cam-den City, Cherry Hill Township,Chesilhurst, Collingswood, Gibbsboro,Gloucester City, Gloucester Township, Had-don Heights, Haddon Township, Laurel

come, the Camden County Open SpacePreservation Trust Fund Advisory Com-mittee was appointed by the FreeholderBoard. The diverse committee provides theFreeholder Board with guidance regardingthe implementation of the Open SpacePreservation Trust Fund. The CamdenCounty Open Space Preservation TrustFund was created by the Freeholder Boardin 1999 in response to overwhelming votersupport of an open space referendumplaced on the ballot in November 1998.

Each year, municipal organizations areinvited to submit an application detailingthe enhancements planned for their exist-ing recreation facilities for consideration tothe Advisory Committee. Although the re-quests for funding are limited to $25,000 perproject each year, municipal organizationsmay submit additional requests for fundingin the following year. The focus on music is espe-cially significant for seniors, said Rachel Helfand, executive as-sistant of program developmentfor Spring Hills Senior Communi-ties, as there is such a powerful

connection that music providesour residents. The transforma-tional effect of music continuesas people age. It can provide joy, comfort and, in some cases, bring

    back memories experienced longago.

The weeks activities at SpringHills Cherry Hill will include mo-tion picture salutes to musicalsFunny Lady, Evita, TheKing and I, and Fiddler on theRoof, an Andre Bocceli concerton video, a musical spelling beeand a performance by the Lake-bridge Boys.

Its a wonderful

demonstration of how peoplelearn about each other and re-spect their differences throughthe power of music as the filmshows children from the HMSSchool for Children with CerebralPalsy in Philadelphia as actingpartners with able-bodied chil-dren from Germantown FriendsSchool. Green will join the resi-dents as they view the documen-tary, provide insight into the mak-ing of the documentary and havea sing-along with residents.

This will be a very specialweek for all of us at Spring HillsCherry Hill, said Stacy Gibson,

The districts big constructionproject this summer was the re-placement of boilers in all 17schools. Assistant Superintend-ent of Business James Devereauxsaid the boiler project is on sched-ule to be completed no later thanOct. 7.

The district hopes to cut heat-ing costs with the new boilers. The heating system is equippedwith thermostats that automati-cally adjust the amount of heat-ing needed for a building depend-ing on the temperature.

The new boiler pumps willsense temperatures throughoutthe school, Devereaux said.

The asbestos removal portionof the project has already been

completed. Devereaux said allbuildings are now asbestos free.

    ity.

This is really going to take itfrom 1962 to the 21st century, said Paul Stridick, the director of community development for

Cherry Hill.Lisa Morina, vice president of

government and external rela-tions for Kennedy, said the projectis in its preliminary stages.Kennedy is waiting for council to

pass the plan before moving for-ward with the project.

It allows us to align more withthe townships designation, Mo-rina said of the plan.

Stridick said the redevelop-ment plan is the townships visionof how the property will be devel-oped. It outlines zoning regula-tions specific to the property andgives a general overview of whatthe new hospital may look like.

The new zoning regulations in-crease the maximum buildingheight from 60 to 75 feet. Stridicksaid the current patient towerdoes not allow adequate space forhospital equipment. He believesextending the height limit anextra 15 feet will make a huge dif-ference.

It allows them to get thatmuch more space, Stridick said.

To help fulfill open space re-quirements, the township is en-couraging the hospital to includegreen initiatives, such as green

roofs on the buildings, rain gar-dens on the property and solarcar ports on the top floor of theparking structure. The plan in-cludes a rain garden in an areacurrently housing surface park-ing for the hospital.

The plan also encourages thehospital to achieve LEED certifi-cation to receive credit towardbuilding and lot coverage.

Because Kennedy has not goneinto specifics about the project,Morina is unsure whether thehospital will pursue these greeninitiatives.

The plan outlines the area anddoes encourage certain kinds of initiatives, Morina said.

Kennedy Hospital was eligiblefor a rehabilitation plan aftermeeting the states criteria.

    During its investigation of the

property, the planning board de-termined the buildings were insubstandard condition mainlydue to their age, under-utilization

of space and the age ofthe water and sewer infrastruc-ture.

All three criteria were reasonsthe township could declare theproperty an area in need of reha-bilitation.

We only had to meet one of those six criteria, Stridick said.We hit on three of those six cri-teria.

Morina said the hospital islooking to make changes to im-prove the experience for patients.

Weve looked at a variety of community needs, she said. There was a huge communityneeds assessment.

Morina said Kennedy HealthSystem will have specific infor-mation on its plans for the hospi-tal after the second reading of theredevelopment plan.
