If you would like to be part of our main parent body, the P&C, you will be made very welcome at our first meeting on Tuesday February 21 starting at 6.30pm in the staffroom. We aim for all meetings to be concluded by 8.30pm. Welcome and Class Information Breakfast It was terrific to see so many parents join us for the Welcome and Class Information Breakfast. As you can see by the photos many of our students and families supported the HeartKids fundraiser by wearing red clothing and giving generously. It is sad to read the facts where more than 4 young Australians will die this week as a result of congenital heart disease. I know Ve-ronica Brown, our parent coordinator for this fundraiser and our school staff were incredibly appreciative of all the support and donations. Thank you one and all! I have also heard great feedback from the class information sessions. We have tried a variety of times for parent/ teacher information sessions but find mornings suit the best for many of our parents and carers. Remember, if you would like to talk to your child’s class teacher it is best to make an appointment by sending in a note directly to them. A small concern can often be ‘nipped in the bud’ rather than to let it grow into a large one by talking to the class teacher, the supervising Assistant Princi-pal or myself. I would like to sincerely offer a BIG thank you to Mrs Wastell, our Good Start Breakfast Club coordinator and ALL of the fantastic staff and volunteers for their help with the preparation and serving of our breakfast. It could not have happened without you! New Parking Signage in Bilgola Close If you live in Bilgola Close or use the rear entry to the school you would have noticed the new signage regarding the parking restrictions for this cul-de-sac. The No Parking signs were initially thought to mean ‘No Stopping’ but Gosford City Council have now provided an information banner which is displayed near the signs on our school fence. I spent several afternoons last week in Bilgola Close explaining that these new zones can be used as a drop off and pick up area (sometimes referred to as a ‘kiss & drop’ zone). The driver, however, must stop for no longer than 2 minutes and if they need to remove themselves from the vehicle must remain within 3 metres of it. These new parking restrictions were recommended and approved by the GCC Road & Traffic Committee following a pedestrian safety review after an accident involving one of our students last year. I apologise for the late notice to parents, however, even though I promoted these changes last year the school wasn’t provided with the exact date of signage installation. This would have given everyone notice and an understanding of these changes to parking. Community Fundraiser In next weeks newsletter you will see information about a fundraising evening to support Iris Kempshall and her family. I got to know Iris early on in my time at Chertsey and know what a generous and supportive person and friend she has been and continues to be for many of us. Now at her time of need I urge you to support this fundraiser by whatever means you are able to. Active After School Communities Kate Currie, our hard working Active After School Communities coordinator has informed me that this term ‘Active’ will occur on Mondays and Thursdays and will be offering volleyball and orienteering on the respective days. I know that Kate recently completed her orienteering course and was joined by Tania Rendall and Aaron Tomlinson. I encourage students to participate in this healthy and well run program which is also supported by teacher volunteers. Thank you to : Sharon Hynes, Michael McFarland, Jodie Craig, Heidi Daley, Nicole Wiseman, and Melissa Sammut.

Did you know that since Term 1, 2007, the AASC program has funded Chertsey PS $40 070 to conduct the program and trained 9 staff and community members in the Community Coach Training Program course? What a valuable program this is to our school and its community!

JOIN US FOR OUR ‘SNACK ‘n CHAT’ and P&C MEETING There are many opportunities for you to find out what makes Chertsey such a good school. An open invitation exists to all our families to come along to our school’s annual SNACK ‘N’ CHAT at 5.30pm in the school Library on Tuesday February 21. (NOTE: Child minding will be available). We are a very welcoming P&C so please consider staying on after the SNACK ‘N’ CHAT to attend our first P&C meeting for 2012.We would especially welcome any new parents & carers to join our P&C . It starts at 6.30pm and we aim to complete each meeting by 8.30pm.

Welcome Chertsey Families

I would like to take the opportunity to introduce myself to our new families and welcome back of our wonderful families. For those I have not met before my name is Lisa Seaman and I am the Parent Project Officer (PPO) for Chertsey Primary School. My role in this position is to support and connect families with our wonderful school. As PPO I have been fortunate enough to facilitate programs that can enhance your child’s learning and support parents with their child’s numeracy and literacy skills. This is accomplished by running programs such as Multiplication Masters Club, Homework Club and 100 Readers Club. Multiplication Masters Club offers children a chance to have some fun with Multiplication; the club is open to all children Year 2 to Year 6 although we have had some younger members that have been eager to learn their Multiplication. The club will be run on Tuesdays in the library at lunch 1 after eating time and was a great success last year. Homework Club aims to assist families with their child’s homework and it has been wonderful to see all the families attending and utilising the support of the homework club last year and I’m happy to report that the children utilising the club have improved their ability to complete their homework each week and this has inadvertently reduced some of the anxiety that families can suffer from with homework. Homework club is run on Tuesday afternoons in the Library after school and will commence this Tuesday. 100 Readers Challenge Is a program offered to years 2 – 6. The program aims to encourage students to read daily and they are rewarded when they achieve a set number of reading sessions. At 25 sessions students are presented with a certificate, at 50 reading session a certificate and a lucky dip is presented, at 75 session certificate and a book mark and when they reach 100 sessions they are rewarded with a book award of their choice presented in the whole school assembly with a certificate. The students’ parents are invited to attend so they can formally congratulate their child’s achievement. Reading is part of most children’s homework and reading log sheets will be sent home in the near future for you to keep track of your child’s. As PPO I am also involved with our Schools Head Start program by supporting teachers and new families with the transition to school program. I look forward to seeing you all at the school and please don’t hesitate to contact me through Chris in the office if you have any questions. Have a great year Yours sincerely Lisa Seaman Parent Project Officer

Sunsafe and Proud Hat Draw This week our Sunsafe and Proud Hat draw winner is Sarah 4/5S. She wins a slushy from the school canteen. I thank Mrs Dyer and our P&C for supporting this student welfare program. Please ensure your child has a school hat with their name marked clearly on the inside to be eligible to win the slushy . I am extremely proud of how smart the students look in FULL school uniform. Let’s keep it up! Hope to see you at our Snack ‘n’ Chat and P&C meeting next Tuesday evening.
