Delmarva is rich all year in arts, culture, music & theater. So get your pen out and circle a few events to attend during February and March. To banish the mid-winter blues, you must take a good dose of art or performance LIVE. Getting out is good for you and for your community arts organizations, be-cause your attention and support is the other half of any creative venture. If a painting is exhibited to no one, does it still brighten the wall? There are also many opportunities for those of you who may wish to get in the thick of it. Check out area singing, dance, photography and writer’s groups in the “ongoing” pages or sign up for a class. Art is oxygen for remembering to dream while you’re awake. It offers a world where you may feel the stirrings of inspiration and purpose, as spring sunlight warms the soil, drawing out a dormant seed and beckoning its potential up from the dark.

The big challenge is making sure that the growing consumptionof social media doesn’t become overwhelming. Ironically intrying to dodge the constant flood of blogs, status updates, emails, tweets and messaging, people may actually narrow their focus, creating less dialog and more polarization. It is tiring and impossible to keep up with. So how to balance the blitz? Here are some tips from the swelling tide of web articles now blogging on this very issue...

1. The ”too much already award.” Spot the signs. Do you feel alone even as you communicate with people all day? That’s a signal that technology is dominating your life.

2. Try being inaccessible for set blocks of time. Step away from all the streaming screens.

3. Take control of your day. Give clear instructions. Try an email signature that reads “I answer e-mail at 10am, 1pm and 4pm. If you need a quicker response, please call.”

4. Begin each day with a list of what you’d like to accomplish. Be mindful of things that rob you of time and focus. Access which forms of communication are efficient and relevant to your goals.

5. Set limits for yourself and stick to them. One or two forms of social media, 1 hour per day.

Engaging talented young musicians since 1989, the SYS is a full orchestra of 35 members, including strings, winds, brass and percussion. The experience of playing in a full orchestra is not offered in area schools. Dr. Jeffrey Schoyen, As-sociate Professor at Salisbury University conducts both the SYS and the Salisbury Symphony Orchestra. SYO is supported by Salisbury University, which provides rehearsal and concert space, as well as a parent’s organization, local teachers and volunteers. The group has weekly rehears-als and performs two concerts a year. The youth orchestra is open to all school-age children through high school who can play at the intermediate level. There are audi-tions for seating purposes mainly. Tuition is $80 per semester, but tuition assistance is available. 410-543-6381

Some musical notes ...Where the term Classical Music comes from. The Classical period lasted from 1750-1825, but was very influential to modern music. By this time in history, the Industrial Revolution was in full-swing in America, but most of the sophisticated popular music came from Europe, specifically Vienna and Italy. In the last century, Walt Disney incorporated classical pieces into his films and was inspired to create the movie “Fantasia,” rendering his artistic vision of favorite scores. Cartoons, movies and commercial sound tracks have always drawn from or been inspired by orchestral works. The works of Mozart, Haydn, Beethoven, Bach, and other major classical composers will be played in concert halls and used in new technologies centuries from now. Their works are timeless, transcending generation to generation and now a new venue may widen concert repertoire from a surprising source: video games. Nobuo Uematsu, a revered composer of many game sound tracks, played his first concert in the U.S. at the Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles with the Los Angeles Philharmonic. This “Final Fantasy” concert sold out the very same day tickets went on sale. “Tweens and Teens are gaining interest in clas-sical music as result of their exposure to classically inspired pieces that are incorporated into the video games they play,” notes Joe McKesson, Social Net-working Director of Classical Archives, the largest classical music site on the Internet. West Australian Symphony Orchestra principal conductor Paul Daniel believes that the best video game scores “reference” great symphonic composers, but hearing music as a background to another activity like computer gaming is far less compelling than being there for the real experience of witnessing musicians perform live.” making beautiful music

This “small” alternative venue has many positives for all involved. Everyone attending brings food & drink, plus some $$ to pay the musicians and maybe purchase their CD. The musicians benefit by saving on hotels since they usually are able to crash at the house that put on the house concert. They meet amazing people and make strong connections with folks by playing in such an intimate setting. In some cases bands on the “house party”circuit made more money then they did on a traditional commer-cial venue tour. Also, an advantage of house concerts is that it was a great way to expand their audience and fan base, since the “hosts” basically would go out and recruit a bunch of friends- most of whom knew nothing about the band before seeing them play.

Hand dancing, also known as “D.C. hand dancing” or “D.C. swing,” is a form of swing dance that can be traced as far back as the 1920s, from Lindy Hop to Jitterbug and to the ‘50s when Washington, D.C. de-veloped its own version and named it Hand Dance. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F.Spray a 9-inch springform pan with nonstick spray. Refrigerate. Microwave the chocolate until melted and smooth, stirring every 20 seconds, for about 1 minute. Combin/pulse the almonds and cookies in a food processor until they are finely ground. Transfer the nut mixture to a medium bowl. Add the butter and sugar to the processor, blend until creamy, smooth. Add the grated orange peel and pulse briefly, until incorporated. Add the eggs, 1 at a time, blending until incorporated. Clean the sides of the mixing bowl and blend again. Add the nut mixture and melted chocolate. Pulse until well blended. Pour the batter into the prepared pan. Bake until the center puffs and a tester inserted into the center of the cake comes out clean. (About 35 minutes) Cool the cake in the pan for 15 minutes. Transfer the cake to a platter. To finish ; sift the cocoa powder over and serve. For Chocolate glaze topping: whisk glaze ingredients in a small saucepan until melted, pour evenly over torte and refrigerate for 40 minutes before serving.legend: Cardinal of Milan unexpectedly visited the town of Saronno in Italy. To honor him, two young lovers, Giuseppe and Osolina, quickly baked up a mixture of unusual bittersweet cookies which they wrapped in pairs to symbolize their love. The Cardinal was so delighted with the cookies, he blessed them and married them on the spot. The couple had a long and very sweet life together.

Russian-born Mark Rothko, a standout among the New York School painters, explored many painting styles before his signature 1950s mo-tif of soft, rectangular shapes over color fields. He was inspired by the philosopher Nietzsche and folklore. A fierce champion of social revolutionary thought, Rothko insisted that his art was filled with content, and brimming with ideas. Rothko felt that an artist’s freedom of expression could be compromised by the market. He railed against the art world establishment and critics, at times refusing commissions, sales and even exhibitions. Rothko’s book; “The Artist’s Reality,” offers a detailed picture of a sophisticated, deeply knowledgeable, and philosophical artist who was also a passionate and articulate writer.

quiet and industrious, leaving butter left out on the table, socks and other tasty items intact. They only require a tiny plot of

“land” and compostable kitchen scraps.Have you solved this riddle?

All right then, a final clue: vermaculture.Vermaculture is the process of using worms to help you compost. Other than strolling outside and rooting beneath leaves and rocks to find our staunch local population, red worms (eisenia fetida) are the most commercially available worms to use in your vermaculture system. They can eat nearly half their weight in food a day and their castings (the more scientific name for worm poop) have an amazingly high nutritional value for your plants. Good things to put in your worm bin are vegetable or fruit scraps, stale bread, cof-fee grounds & filters, crushed egg shells, tea bags and other organic waste. Avoid dairy products, oil or meat products.Keep it sweet! A worm bin should smell like rich wet dirt and if it smells rancid that’s an indicator that there’s a problem in your system. (usually too much moisture or too much food) Mid-winter is a good time to begin your mini-farm of sorts, employing the same closed circle many real organic farms enjoy.Animals graze . fertilize soil . feeds plants . repeat!Even apartment dwellers may amuse themselves by lording it over their own small compostville.

To Make it:* 10 gallon opaque plastic box with lid. A short, wide container is best because earthworms really only do their thing in the top few inches of dirt.* A drill or other piercing device to punch small holes * Old paper products like newspaper for bedding (non glossy/ no color, dyes contain chemicals harmful to worms) * Water * Dirt * Food scraps* A tray to put under your worm bin* a herd of worms found or purchaseA pound costs about $30. Use a 1/16th inch drill bit to punch holes in top/sides & bottom of your container about 1 inch apart for good ventilation. The tray under your bin will protect your floor. (Plus excess water will drain rather than drown your worms!)Rip paper into 1 inch strips/ mist with water/ squeeze out excess & fluff up.On top of this layer add a handful of dirt. This will help the worms digest their food. Now add your worms and a good amount of food scraps on top of them. Keep in mind that too much food is just as bad for your worm bin as too little so it’s advantageous to do some math to figure out how much you should actually add. If you’re starting with 1/2 lb of worms and they can eat half their body weight in a day, then you should only add 1/4 lb of scraps a day to your worm bin, or about 1 1/2 lb a week.

After adding the food add a layer of dry shredded newspaper on top. This will help keep fruit flies out of your worm bin (though if they end up inside it’s not harmful, only annoying) Put the lid on your bin and place where the tempera-ture will stay between 55-77 degrees, out of direct sunlight, and where you willremember to toss your kitchen waste into it. Keep feeding your worms every few days and if things look too dry, spray it with a bit of water. Don’t stir things around too much because this may trigger bacterial processes that will make the bin heat up and you will end up with cooked worms. When you’re ready to harvest simply push everything in the bin over to one side, add a new layer of damp bedding, and only put food on the new side. In a month or two the worms will have eaten everything from the old side and will have moved on to the new leaving you with (almost) worm free castings.
