This show was juried by Jennifer Green- burg, who is an Associate Professor of Pho- tography and Printmaking at Indiana University Northwest. Thanks to Stephanie and Roger Carnell for the fine job they did hanging the show. The show will be up through March 29. Chesterton Montessori School Art Show The artwork of the students who attend the Chesterton Montessori School will be featured at the Chesterton Art Cen- ter March 2-29, showcasing the works of their students in grades 1-6. The show titled, In Our Nature will have a mix of 2-D and 3-D works that the children have produced thus far throughout the school year under the instruction of art teacher Jennifer Aitchison. The exhibit will include a reception for parents, stu- dents and general public on Saturday, March 4 from 1-3 p.m.

Michigan City Chamber Directory Cover Design Art Contest - Submit your original work for the MC Chamber's 2018 Centennial Member Guide. Subject matter must depict unique aspects of local business activity or Michigan City’s com-mercial heritage. Artists in all mediums are encouraged to participate. Size of work needs to be 9” x 11”. Deadline for sub-missions is March 15, 2017. For more information contact Paula Trout at [email protected].

Porter County Recycling & Waste Reduction is seeking entries for the third annual Re-Think Art Competition & Ex-hibition. The contest challenges artists to submit works made from 100 percent recycled materials for both juried andpopular awards. The deadline for the submission of entries is March 31 for committee review.Categories include: young adult, adult and youth. Works will be displayed at the Northwest Indiana Earth Day Celebrationon April 22 for a popular vote.Materials that can be used include anything reclaimed, reused, recovered, second-hand, sal-vaged, or anything un-new. Details are available on the district’s website, www.PorterCountyRecycling.org, or by calling219-465-3815.

The Chesterton Art Center is offering a $1000 scholarship to a Porter County high school senior graduating in the class of2017 and planning to attend college to major in an art-related field. Applicants will need to submit a letter of intent, includingwhich school you will be attending, why the interest in art, and what the future art-related plans may be.Applications require a portfolio including both 3D and matted 2-D pieces. Also, a variety of sketchbooks are requested withthe application. Sketchbooks should reflect a variety of creative concepts personal to each student. All materials must besubmitted by April 7 before 3 p.m. Portfolios and sketchbooks can be picked up anytime after April 24.The official prospectus will be downloadable from the website at www.chestertonart.com.

Call for Artists: 2nd Annual Pop-Up Art Experience

Valparaiso Festival and Events & The Enclave Project seek entries for The Pop-Up: A Valparaiso Art Experience, July 20 -August 8 in businesses throughout Valparaiso, IN. Grand Prize $3000, 2nd $1500, 3rd $750, Honorable Mention $250, Pop-ular Vote $500. Jurors: Gregg Hertzlieb, Aimee Tomasek, and Carolann Brown. Artists must be 18 years or older. Mary Ann Pals had a pastel titled, A Slice of Autumn,accepted into the 30th IAPS Convention Exhibition, tobe held concurrently with the 2017 International As-sociation of Pastel Societies Convention in Albu-querque, NM this summer.

Chesterton Art Center members Peggy Carter andSteve Bensing were among those who participatedin the Porter County Gardening Show Photographycontest. Peggy earned a first place ribbon in the Fun-gus in the Garden category with her "Faucet Fungus"photo. Steve received second place in the Bugs andInsects in the Garden category with his "FoundationMeadows Spider" entry. Attached are the photos.

Louisa Murzyn received many awards for her photo-graphic work in February. Photographic Society ofAmerica (PSA) recognition: “Haunting Sea” earned anaward in the Pictorial division for PSA.Chicago Area Camera Club Association (CACCA)recognitions: In Nature: “Mommy and Me” earned Na-ture Print of the Year and an honorable mention in themonthly competition. “In Full Feather” earned anaward and “ Haunting Sea” and “Tastes Fishy” bothearned an honorable mention. Louisa also ranked firstin nature scores for the year.In Photojournalism: “Flowers for Fallen Officer” earnedan award and “Hitting the Lip” earned an honorablemention. Louisa ranked third in scores for the year inphotojournalism.In monochrome, ‘A Dark History” earned Best ofShow. “Fisherman in Herringbone”; “Look to theLighthouse”; and “Haunting Sea” all earned an award.In color, “Witches’ Brew” and “A River Runs ThroughIt” earned an award. In digital projection, “Tiny TasteTester” earned an award.

Art ClassesMonday Night Life DrawingNote: Monday Night Life Drawing resumes Monday, March 27. 6:30 to 9:30 pm. Come practice/learn drawing the figure or portrait from life. Some instruction of sketching basics available for be-ginners. All skill levels are welcome. Pencil or charcoal are mostly used, but class participants canalso sketch with other media. Thursday Night All Media Class with Suzie RossoThursday nights from 7-9 pm, Suzie instructs students working in most media--pencil & drawing, in-cluding figures; watercolor, acrylics, oil, and pastel. Her class is an opportunity to improve your skills& develop a personal artistic style, surrounded by others doing the same. Cost is $65/month (4 ses-sions) with members receiving a $5 discount.Beginning/Intermediate Pastels with Mary Ann Pals6-week session, starting Wednesday, March 8 from 7-9. Participating students must have somedrawing experience, but no previous pastel experience is required to attend. Mary Ann will coverthe basic techniques of using pastels and help students feel comfortable with the materials. Thecost of class is $75, with members receiving a $5 discount. The cost of class is $75, withmembers receiving a $5 discount.Oil Painting Basics Workshop with Mark VanderVinneMark VanderVinne will be teaching a 2-day work-shop titled, "Oil Painting Basics" on March 25-26 atthe Chesterton Art Center. As Mark explains, "Oilpainting is its own beast. It can be playful and fun,or downright frustrating." In this course, Mark willshow students how to work with the medium, insteadof against it. Over the 2 days, participants will focuson painting a single, well-lit object, and working fromtheir own photographs, allowing them to explore theaspects of light, shape, value and color. Mark willalso discuss a simple painting approach along withbrushwork and paint viscosity, in order to make the entire painting process easier and more fun. Theworkshop will include lectures, demonstrations, individual painting time, and personalized instructionto promote artistic growth. Class will meet Saturday, March 25 from 10-5 and Sunday, March 26 from 12-5. Each day, there willbe a break for lunch. The cost of the workshop is $145 (for members, it is $120). A supply list will beprovided once registration is complete. The workshop is designed for beginning or intermediatepainters. Intermediate DSL Photography with George KassalGeorge Kassal will be offering a 3-week Intermediate DSL Photography class starting Wednesday,March 29 from 6-9 p.m. The workshop will help beginners move beyond basic control of their camerato an intermediate skill level. Class will start with a quick review of fundamentals and then explore aseries of creative controls that will allow photographers to take advantage of more advanced camerafeatures. Hands-on exercises will include simple portraits, night photography & holiday decorations,flowers & close-ups, using the flash, group shots and special effects. Students are asked to bringtheir camera and manual to class. The cost for class is $50, with members receiving a $5 discount.
