The warmest of welcomes to the 2021 Chetham’s International Piano Summer School.Whether you’re joining us in person or online we know you’ll take with you extraordinary memories of your time on the summer school.

Although the last year has been challenging in so many ways, we’re extremely proud of the amount of music making that has continued at Chetham’s. Thanks to the creativity of our staff and the state of the art facilities available to us, we’ve been able to continue almost as normal, so it’s a great pleasure that we can start to share these experiences more widely once more.

Music is such an integral part of the human condition and though technology has allowed us to communicate and learn remotely, nothing can ever replace the shared experience of live music – whether performing or listening together. We hope your time on CIPSS will allow you to explore and develop musical creativity, renew friendships and reset after these most unusual times – all in the company of other people!!!

We must express huge gratitude to Murray and Kathryn who have, once again, created something really quite spectacular for us all.

All good wishes for a brilliant course,

Nicola and Tom

Introduction

Here we are again - on site and online! The warmest of welcomes from both of us is extended here on the souvenir

programme to everyone involved in the 21st Chetham’s International Piano Summer School and Junior Academy. We are so excited and elated to be here with you! After last year’s exclusively online festival, it is truly thrilling for us to be able to offer ‘the best of both worlds’ from Chetham’s, affectionately known as ‘Chet’s’, to pianists and piano lovers from literally all over the planet. We have well over 300 active participants on the course and 60 incredible pianist-teachers on the faculty. We have our junior academy in full swing for the second time, and we have a phenomenal series of concerts, lectures, classes and activities for all to enjoy.

Looking back, who would have thought that August 2020 would have brought such radical changes to CIPSS (Chetham’s International Piano Summer School) and our continued mission of inspiring, enabling and supporting a love of piano playing in the broadest, most comprehensive sense? Thanks to the wonders of modern technology and the generosity of our incredible faculty of world-class pianist-teachers, CIPSS 2020 proved to be a resounding success. There is never any elitism on a CIPSS course, though everyone is always extremely serious about piano playing and listening. There is no other summer school that manages to cater for the universal in the way CIPSS does: adult amateurs, promising children and observers are as welcome on the courses as concert pianists, international young artists preparing for top competitions, and professional music teachers. The 21st edition of our beloved summer school will set new standards and parameters by simultaneously being both online and onsite in Manchester. With lockdowns, restrictions and the Covid aftermath, life on our planet has taken something of a proverbial battering. The world continues to go through extraordinary changes. We are unquestionably living in a transitional era…. but CIPSS has adapted and continues to be ‘the friendliest summer school in the world’. This remains our strapline post-lockdown just as much as before. We still aim to offer inspiration, support, friendship, guidance, memories and fun for all our participants and staff - whether they are with us in Manchester in our state-of-the-art facilities, or in their homes on laptops and iPads. Chetham’s School itself has coped spectacularly well over the past eighteen months and comes equipped with top-of-the-range AV units in all the school’s major teaching rooms. We are so grateful to be able to use these on the summer school. It means that the online

experience for our virtual participants will be a vibrant one: we are also including a new streaming service for the major concerts and a significant number of teaching sessions too. It all adds up to a tremendous ‘Chet’s buzz’ for those of you who are watching and participating at home; we feel confident that you will truly feel part of the CIPSS community online - especially if you make a point of attending

the virtual coffee mornings and evening bar chats that have been scheduled.

The summer school at Chetham’s is a celebration of piano playing. We wish everyone who is involved a tremendously happy time! In total it all adds up to so much more than the sum of its parts. The junior academy, summer school and festival constitutes an extraordinary fusion of inspiration and creativity for pianists and lovers of the piano of all ages and at all stages of their lives.

There are many individuals and organisations to whom we are indebted. Huge thanks to Forsyth’s Music Shop for providing the onsite shop as well as additional pianos. We are indebted to our piano tuners/technicians Daniel Carney and David Daniels, both former students at the school and now high in demand at the very top of their profession.

The summer school’s team of house parents, administrators, supporters and volunteers continues to show touching dedication and loyalty - helping to ensure its smooth running as well as the safety of everyone on the course. Huge thanks to joint Principal Nicola Smith for her strong, caring support of the junior academy in particular. We are especially grateful to Lesley Martin for initially creating and then continuing to control, refine and co-ordinate the computer programme that empowers the extremely complex timetable and organisation of the summer school’s schedules. Without Lesley we simply would not be able to have a summer school.

Have a wonderful inspirational and enriching stay at Chetham’s.

7pm Schumann: Kriesleriana Lecture recital by Christopher Elton

We are thrilled to welcome Christopher Elton to give this very special lecture recital.

‘Schumann’s Kreisleriana has long been one of the works for which pianists feel a very special and close affinity. But for audiences it can, with its quixotic changes of character and strange passages of almost neurotic introspection, seem quite impenetrable.

‘In fact, when I first gave a lecture recital on this work I – half in jest – called it “The Kreisleriana crisis: Crisis for whom”!?! I hope to explore its background, its very personal musical demands and expectations, and also to illustrate with excerpts by great pianists - many in historic recordings.’

GinasteraDanzas Argentinas Op. 2

Astor PiazzollaSentimental OblivionThree Brazilian Songs Six Tangos

Alberto Ginastera (1916–83)Danzas Argentinas Op. 2

Danza del viejo boyero (Dance of the Old Herdsman)Danza de la moza donosa (Dance of the Beautiful Maiden)Danza del gaucho matrero (Dance of the Arrogant Cowboy)

The prolific Argentinian composer Alberto Ginastera is considered one of the most important 20th-century composers of the Americas, experimenting with folk

themes and pre-Columbian legends throughout his life. He moved to the United States in 1968, then to Geneva in the 1970s – his music was often banned in Argentina, by the right-wing government – but wherever he lived, his music always reflected the Gauchesco tradition, the migratory, outlaw horseman (gaucho) of the vast Argentine pampas. He wrote three piano concertos and three large piano sonatas, and Danzas Argentinas were written early in his career, in 1937. They remain very popular amongst pianists for their wit and bi-tonality. The quirky Dance of the Old Herdsman contrasts with the gently plangent Dance of the Beautiful Maiden; and the irrepressible, wild vitality of Dance of the Arrogant Cowboy brings this short set to a virtuosic conclusion.

Astor Piazzolla (1921–92)SentimentalOblivion

Astor Piazzolla was a master of the bandoneon – the Argentine accordion – and single-handedly reinvented Argentina’s greatest musical form, the tango, with a great deal of controversy. Spending his childhood in a poor part of New York (where his parents worked for the Mafia), he headed back to his hometown Buenos Aires at 16, and formed his own orchestra. It took him 20 years to conquer the hearts of the aficionados – and his melting pot of modern jazz, classical and folkloric Latin music so incensed tango purists that he regularly received death threats. Reading the invaluable Memoirs compiled by Natalio Gorin, where Piazzolla talks uninhibitedly (and sometimes bitterly) about his life and music, the reader is struck by his struggle and anguish, and anger – qualities which emerge in his music, alongside a thrilling gift for melody and driving rhythm. Despite the fierce criticism, the financial failures and turbulent private life, Piazzolla was finally recognised as a genius, whose dark music is steeped in Hispanic, Italian and Jewish ideas.

Sentimental shows the meditative, nostalgic side to Piazzolla. It was written as part of a Parisian musical hall show, La Famille des Artistes (1985), with the Argentinian theatre director Alfredo Arlas. The celebrated song Oblivion, written in collaboration with the Italian singer Angela Terenzi, was a huge, enduring hit. It first appeared in the 1982 film of Pirandello’s Enricho IV:

Heavy, suddenly they seem heavy, the linen and velvets of your bed when our love passes to oblivion; Later, at some other place in a mahogany bar, the violins playing again for us our song, but I’m forgetting;Without a glance people are straying off a train platform; I’m forgetting, I’m forgetting.

Three Brazilian Songs arr. MacGregorCanto Triste Edu Lobo (b. 1943) and Vinicius de Moraes (1913–80)Insensatez Tom Jobim (1927–94) and Vinicius de MoraesCanto de Ossanha Baden Powell (1937–2000) and Vinicius de Moraes

On my first tour of Brazil thirty years ago, I fell in love with the suppleness and subtlety of Brazilian music. These three very famous songs – Canto Triste, Insenastez and Canto Ossanja – were written collaboratively by some of their greatest artists: the guitarists Baden Powell and Edu Lobo, the poet and playwright Vinicius de Moraes, and of course the genius of Brazilian music, Tom Jobim. These little arrangements reflect my initial affection for their music – but do check out one of the most perfect 28-minute albums ever made, Francis Albert Sinatra & Antônio Carlos Jobim (1967), with classy string arrangements by Claus Ogerman.

Six Tangos arr. MacGregor Piazzolla My piano arrangements were inspired by the late, unpublished scores for Piazzolla’s preferred quintet line-up of bandoneon, violin, piano, electric guitar and acoustic bass. Soon after Piazzolla died in 1992 I was asked to tour with Quinteto Piazzolla, Piazzolla’s original musicians from Buenos Aires (including the great guitarist Horacio Malvicino and bassist Hector Console), and learnt a great deal about the Piazzolla style: especially how certain little licks have to sound ‘mugre’, loosely translated as dirty/rough.

Tanguedia An explosive bolero; Quinteto Piazzolla often liked to open their shows with this, and the bassist Hector Console would slap his bass rather violently.Buenos Aires Hora CeroAn impression of the night’s street sounds in Buenos Aires. Piazzolla liked to use contemporary techniques, semi-improvised, over this composition.Milonga del AngelOne of his heartstopping yearning melodies, from his Angel trilogy written in 1965. The tango is traditionally the dance of parting lovers.Michelangelo 70Written for the Michelangelo theatre in Argentina – not much melody, just a series of chromatic chord changes and aggressive, jagged rhythms, wrapped up in an exciting march.SoledadOne of his most personal pieces; another milonga. The title means ‘solitude,’ or ‘alone’.

Libertango Piazzolla always claimed his music was heavily influenced by Bach, and this famous 16-bar sequence is the opening of the Well-Tempered Clavier, modulated to A minor. It became Piazzolla’s big, international hit of the 70s; someone somewhere in the world is always playing this.

Jazzed: Classical FavouritesArranged by Dave Buxton(20212UK - Book Only)

Arranged for solo piano by Dave Buxton, these canonical pieces are curated to fulfil a wide variety of needs: as part of Jazz keyboard studies, as an addition to a gigging pianist’s set list, or simply to delight friends and family. Buxton explores spicy chromaticism, expert voice leading and modal colour; weaving through a rich tapestry of modern harmony and vibrant rhythms to bring these ever-popular tunes a fresh and authentic jazzy flavour.

Romantic & Classical ViennaArranged by Nancy Litten(Romantic Vienna: 20213UK - Piano Trio Score & Parts; Classical Vienna: 20206UK - Piano Trio Score & Parts)

“This equality of technical challenge is a very positive thing. Litten has potentially solved one of the overriding difficulties facing all chamber music education when pianists are considered, and for this we should be extremely grateful.” - Murray McLachlan (Concert pianist & Head of Keyboard, Chetham’s School of Music), reviewing Classical Vienna
