The past two years have seen massive growth as we’ve welcomed over 300 new colleagues to

the business. Although we’re a bigger company

now, we still uphold the honest values that have helped shape Chevron over many years. ‘The Chevron Way’, as it’s affectionately become known, sums up what Chevron is all about – who we are as a business and what makes us unique. Up until now though, we’ve never actually written any of these things down!

A couple of months ago we set about coming up with a definitive list of these values – and this was no easy task! Chevron means lots of things to different people. So, we consulted with many of you extensively, talked to suppliers and customers and eventually agreed seven simple values, which we think represent the Chevron Way. In the process of doing this, we also decided on a new company motto and name for these values, In Safe Hands (see page 5).

I hope that, both now and in the future, we will always remain true to these founding values and what makes Chevron both a special place to work and a company that people want to do business with.

‘Aiming for Zero’ Safety DayWell done to Anthony Morrison (Moza), Contract Supervisor and Matt Worswick, National Delivery Manager, who helped to raise over £1200 for local charities, as part of Manchester Smart Motorways’ Aiming for Zero Safety Day.

Chevron is the TM provider to Manchester Smart Motorways (MSM) and Moza and Matt were both on hand to set up the Traffic Management section of the event, as well as provide plenty of fun and games throughout the day. More than 300 site staff took part in the event, with plenty of visitors from other projects, along with senior representatives from Highways England and Local Authorities.

“A huge thanks to Moza and the lads for making such an effort in livening up the day with your charity games and setting up the TM section. It was great to see everyone pull together and have a bit of fun with it all. From all at MSM, Thank you!”

Well done to the Rochdale team, who helped out on BBC One’s DIY SOS: Homes for Veterans special.

The two-part programme saw the DIY SOS team transform a street of derelict houses for armed forces veterans and their families in East Manchester.

Darren Gilbert (Supervisor), Shaun Jackson, Ben Dootson, and Najeeb Alansi (TM Operatives), and Jason Winterburn (TM Foreman), spent seven days working alongside hundreds of other hardworking volunteers for the programme, which was broadcast in October year.

Darren Gilbert said: “The team volunteered to help out after Morgan Thompson (Supervisor) received a plea for help from his friend, who is the Production Manager for the show. We were very pleased to take part in such a worthy cause

and enjoyed being involved.”

The lads’ work was definitely above and beyond the duties of the usual day-to-day TM and involved liaising with the production team, as well as managing traffic, site parking and deliveries.

As part of the project, three large homes were created to house veterans and their families, as well as one standard size property and a walk-in support centre. Work also took place to create disabled parking, a planting scheme, and facelift all 62 properties on the street.

Before the work was completed, the project team were treated to a royal visit from HRH Prince William and HRH Prince Harry, who toured the site and met with volunteers, as well as having a go at some building work!

All 62 properties on the street were facelifted as part of the two week project.

HEALTH AND SAFETY

The Chevron Way:In Safe HandsAt the core of all our values is the idea that our people, clients, contractors, and members of the travelling public are In Safe Hands. Safety is much more than just a tick box exercise to us, but is something we care about passionately.

Safety is Our BusinessSafety is at the core of everything we do.

Deliver on Our PromisesWe are only as good as our last job.

Champion our CustomersWe work together with our customers and supply chain and share in success.

Lead by ExampleNever be too big to do the small things that need to be done.

Keep it SimpleGet the basics right, the results will follow.

Humour gives us an edgeWe are easy and fun to do business with.

We have been incorporating these values as part of our workshops and training courses, so you may be familiar with them already, or if not, you soon will be!

CHEVRON TRAFFIC MANAGEMENT Safety is our business

In the last issue we announced a major new initiative to improve Chevron’s IT systems called Project Midvale, which will see the installation of new software to upgrade our finance, fleet and workforce management systems.

Since mid-January we’ve taken some significant leaps forward and the team have been working hard to configure and implement phase one of the project.

This will include the following:

Dimensions – new finance software, which will replace the current Sage system.

Focalpoint – an expenses and purchasing system, so no more order books or expenses forms (SF07). Our approved suppliers’ product lists/catalogues will sit within the system, so raising an order will be quick and easy, which is important because you will no longer be able to request anything without a Purchase Order! Our ambition is for us to be able to match every invoice with a Purchase Order and to include everything related to our vehicles. Expense claimers and Company Credit Card holders will be able to scan and upload receipts, with the relevant supporting information, into the system directly. Posting receipts to HQ will be a thing of the past.

People Planner – new HR software, which will hold all personnel, training and employee records that are captured across various Standard Forms and spreadsheets currently. We’ll be looking for those of you who deal with recruitment to start entering new starters directly into the software to ensure that employee information recorded is both consistent and accurate.

Brave new worldBy Mark Fleckner, Director

INNOVATION

6 | @CHEVRON | Spring 2016

So that’s phase one… what about phase two? This is where things get a little more complicated, as the majority of the software is being built to Chevron’s specification.

In very simple terms, the new world will look like this:

All personnel and vehicles will be scheduled against contracts/jobs using the same software. This will basically be a much smarter version of white boards or spreadsheets and will allow us to review our vehicle/people utilisation across the business to promote a more integrated approach across depots and regions.

All job packs (SF69) will be produced within the system in a consistent format, so there will no longer be any differences. We want our customers to experience Chevron in the same positive way, regardless of which depot our workforces come from.

Each Foreman will be issued with a tablet, which will receive all of the job pack information. In the same way that they’d complete his paper-based pack, he’ll enter all of the required information into the tablet, which will be date/time/GPS stamped. This means that all vehicle defect sheets, briefings, tool box talks, traffic counts, call logs, etc, will be recorded in real-time so that we can use this information when queries over contract compliance are raised by contractors or clients.

Over the coming weeks and months there will be opportunities for some of you to start getting involved in the project and we’ll be keeping everyone up to date as the project progresses.

The future is coming, so it’s time to embrace it and take Chevron to the next level.

How the awards workTo promote our In Safe Hands approach and identify those who maintain the highest safety standards, we introduced the monthly and annual health and safety award schemes in 2011.

Each month a H&S award, along with £100, is presented to an individual who has made a significant contribution to the safety of our TM crews, the clients and contractors we work with and members of the travelling public. Following this, our Health and Safety Manager, Christopher Rowley, and directors, review all the monthly awards and decide an annual winner overall, who also receives a £1000 cheque.

Congratulations to Tommy Knox, TM Operative (Rochdale), who has been awarded Chevron’s Annual Employee Health and Safety Award 2015.

This is in recognition of the high standards of safety that Tommy has demonstrated throughout the year; not least for his part in assisting a distressed member of the public who had been the victim of a ‘hit and run’ road traffic collision but also his continued high regard for the safety of others.

Tommy received Chevron’s Monthly Health and Safety Award, alongside Adam Leatherbarrow, for his response to the hit and run incident. He also received a Monthly H&S Award in September for his calm and professional approach on a StreetWorks job after politely refusing a contractor’s request to finish a job quickly and compromise safety standards.

Tim Cockayne said: “Tommy reflects Chevron’s In Safe Hands approach through his ongoing commitment to maintaining the highest safety standards. He is very deserving of this award.”

Thank you all for your contributions to Chevron’s safety record in 2015.

H&S Forum The latest National H&S Forum took place at Finedon on 11 November 2015. The topics discussed during the day included the mandatory use of metatarsal protection boots within Chevron from 1 January

2016 and the implementation of the new SMART Foreman’s course. The new course content includes H&S, communication, leadership, teamwork, as well introducing our company values.

If you have any issues or questions that you would like raised at the meeting, please contact your Depot Representative. It’s your opportunity to make a difference and get involved!

HEALTH AND SAFETY UPDATE

Page 8: @Chevron Newsletter-Spring 2016

CHEVRON TRAFFIC MANAGEMENT Safety is our business

The 28 January was no ordinary shift for night-time supervisor Paul Chambers who, along with other Chevron colleagues, had to deal with a major incident on the M20 near Maidstone. He was working on his rounds when he received the emergency call. Whilst installing an overnight lane closure on the M20, a third party curtain side van had struck our TM vehicle, which was parked on the hard shoulder. The impact caused a fire which quickly engulfed both vehicles and the third party driver died at the scene.

As Paul was quite a distance from the incident, he instructed another Chevron crew (who had been cancelled minutes earlier) to attend site and to assist in any way possible until his arrival. Paul then followed the incident reporting procedure and rang his line manager, Ronnie Duggan, immediately.

When Paul arrived on site, one crew member had already been taken to hospital with minor injuries; he then assisted in getting the other two crew members to the client’s local site offices. Paul then stayed at the scene and assisted the Police with their investigation. By the end of his shift on Friday morning, Paul had collated a significant amount of evidence and statements which were forwarded to the management team.

Well done to Paul for working under extreme duress and in very difficult circumstances. For his response to this incident Paul is awarded the January Health and Safety Award.

August - Ian Parsons, TM Foreman (Doxey), who maintained the safety of the travelling public by alerting the Regional Control Centre to incorrect overhead signage in advance of a lane closure on the M6 southbound near Birmingham.

September - Tommy Knox, TM Operative (Rochdale), who refused to compromise the safety of his colleagues, contractors and the travelling public after the location of works was changed unexpectedly on a StreetWorks job.

October - James Guest, TM Foreman (Doxey), who is commended for his response to an incident where a female driver had broken down and needed vehicle recovery in the works area of the A38 Clay Mills Junction.

November - Martin Chapman,TM Operative (Finedon) , whose professionalism shone through when he politely declined a request to install a STOP/GO on the A404 in High Wycombe, insisting on the use of two-way temporary traffic lights instead, which was the safest and only method for the high volume of traffic.

December - Terry Powell, TM Foreman (Wales), who is commended for his willingness to cooperate and work together with Interserve’s TM crew, who were installing a lane closure at the same location as us on the M6 junction 5 near Birmingham.

January – Paul Chambers, TM Supervisor (London) – see main story.

OBSERVE AND REPORT

@CHEVRON | Spring 2016 | 9

We all know that the installation of Traffic Management is a relatively high risk and hazardous occupation; especially when you think about installing & removing tapers, and splitter details, etc, etc.

Therefore, it is probably hard to believe that the majority of Health & Safety related incidents that affect our workforce on a nightly basis, relate to Slips, Trips & Falls; and statistically, the more incidents we have, then the chances of one of them being a serious incident increase.

So, what we need to do is to:

(a) ensure that everybody is aware of the risks;

(b) ensure that everybody takes a moment and pauses BEFORE they get out of the vehicle, to make sure they have properly assessed the conditions that they will be walking on and the possible hazards;

(c) ensure that everybody wears the correct PPE (including head torches);

(d) ensure that when we do have a Slip, Trip & Fall incident (NO MATTER HOW MINOR), then we report the specific details of the incident, and what the person believes they could have done differently, so as to have avoided the incident happening.

By doing all of the above, we can significantly reduce (and even eliminate) any such incidents happening in the future.

At the end of the day, we want everyone to complete each one of their shifts in a safe manner.

Slips, trips and falls

H&S Report February 2016

Lost time injuriesAll of these lost time injuries are related to Slips, Trips and Falls; two of which were RIDDOR reportable:

July - an agency Operative stepped out of his TM van, during a day-time shift, on to a kerb and fractured his metatarsal.

February - a Foreman stepped on to a pile of spoil on the verge, during the night-time shift, and fractured his ankle.

Metatarsal protection safety boots, chin-strapped safety helmets and head torches are mandatory for all operational personnel, including agency. Task lighting and condition of vehicle beds and coning wells on TM vehicles must be fit for purpose and monitored continually. Safety alerts are issued to remind personnel of the risk of Slips, Trips and Falls in our industry and Chevron’s safe systems of work.

DEPOT FOCUS: LEEDS

Back in March 2014 Chevron had just acquired the Leeds depot from Aggregate Industries. The depot had lots of potential, but there had been a recruitment freeze and morale was low.

I arrived after running the Rochdale depot and on my first day was welcomed by some old faces that I had worked with in my previous Moxon TM life, which was a real positive.

First off, we wanted everyone to have a say in naming the depot and held a vote on whether it should stay Moxon or change to Chevron. The vote was 99% in favour of Chevron, so there was a strong desire for change.

Next, we had to get the team morale back and tackle the challenge of turning Leeds from a loss making depot into a profitable one. I must admit it wasn’t easy, but luckily we have fantastic staff, who were up for the challenge.

Yorkshire pride

With the help from the team here already and a few staff I brought over from the Rochdale depot, we rolled our sleeves up, got stuck in and achieved what we needed to do. This team spirit really shone through and soon the depot started picking up larger contracts, such as Area 12.

I’m pleased to say that everyone has done us proud and the depot is now in profit and on the up. There’s still more work to be done of course, with a brand new office on the way in the not too distant future, but for now we’re very happy with what we’ve achieved.

Leeds fact file: Location: The depot is in a prime location close to the M62, M1 & M621 motorways

Team: 66 permanent staff and looking to recruit more, as and when workload dictates

Office Staff: Karl Hinds (Area Manager), Nicola Ellam (Office Manager), Dave Martin (Contracts Manager), Mick Harvey (Office Supervisor), Ryan Harrison (Contracts Supervisor), Gary Billis (Streetworks Supervisor), Carl Pulleyn (Streetworks Supervisor) and George Jaggers (Site Supervisor)

Contracts: Various, from StreetWorks to high speed works & Major Schemes on both Local Authority & Highways England network. Leeds mainly covers Area 12 (Yorkshire), but isn’t exhausted in this area alone.

It’s taken two years of hard work and plenty of Yorkshire spirit, but the Leeds team have achieved the turnaround they needed, as Karl Hinds, Area Manager, explains.

Chevron Doxey awarded Depot of the Year

Our Doxey team have been celebrating after winning Chevron’s Depot of the Year 2015 award.

Karl Exall, Area Manager, said: “I’m absolutely delighted to have won this award. Not just for me, but for the whole team. It’s great recognition for all of their hard work in making Area 9 a success.”

The award is given annually to the Chevron depot that not only consistently meets, but exceeds certain Key Performance Indicators.

Martin Pollard, Director, explains: “There were a number of depots who satisfied the KPI criteria for the award; however, given the unique achievement of the Doxey Depot to go from a ‘standing start’ to regularly putting to work 40 TM crews per night in Area 9, we all agreed that they are worthy winners of the 2015 Chevron Depot of the Year Award – well done to the whole team!”

The award was presented by Director, Martin Pollard to Karl Exall, Area Manager and his team.

Getting to know…

Gavin McKay

“I have enjoyed meeting some of Chevron’s more colourful characters over the years.”

Colin Yates, Area 10 Balfour Beatty Mott MacDonald

May we take this opportunity to express our deep regards and

respect for all the workforce involved in installing the above schematic works over this weekend. It was recognised that the workforce only had short working windows, due to Storm Imogen coming in from the west, and to achieve all the programmed works is testament to the application and dedication of your respective collective workforce in getting the scope of works installed safely and on schedule.”

Ian Coddington, Technical Director, Jacobs

I just wanted to drop you a note regarding the team you supplied

during our recent utility surveys of Hollow Hill Lane. The TM crew arrived on site on time, were well briefed, had all of the required equipment and set up a safe working system so our works could be completed efficiently. Our survey team commented on the quality of your team and how impressed they were. This might not seem particularly challenging to you, but we have worked with a number of suppliers and good Traffic Management is rarer than it should be! We have also had problems with other safety critical suppliers recently. I believe the difference with Chevron is that we have worked hard together to establish a relationship, and you have taken the time to understand what matters to us, how we work, and most importantly, our safety culture.”

Mike Holmes, Asset Delivery Manager, Kier Services (Highways)

Just a note of thanks for all the hard work and effort that has gone into the

emergency works on the M54 over the last few weeks. The dedication and enthusiasm to provide and deliver the solution has been terrific, culminating in last weekend, where the final 48m section of lane 1 and hard shoulder was removed and replaced in full, in some awfully inclement conditions. It just shows what working together in collaboration can deliver. There were many more people involved in the whole process than I have included in this email. Please could you take the time to relay my thanks and appreciation.”

How does it work? Childcare Vouchers are a government approved, tax-efficient way of paying for childcare. If you join the scheme, you can exchange up to £243 a month (£55 a week) of your gross salary for childcare vouchers. The part of your gross salary you exchange for childcare vouchers is tax-free and exempt from National Insurance contributions (NI). Because of this, you can make savings of up to £933 per parent, per year.

What’s the catch? There isn’t one! It doesn’t cost you anything to sign up for childcare vouchers and the scheme applies whatever rate of tax you pay. What’s more, both working parents can request childcare vouchers, which means your family could save up to £1,866 a year

You can also use vouchers to pay for a wide variety of childcare for children up to the age of 16.

All registered childcare providers can accept childcare vouchers as a method of payment, including:

- Nurseries

- Nannies & Childminders

- Crèches

- Out of school clubs (such as Explore Learning)

- Extra-curricular activities (such as music lessons)

- Breakfast and after-school clubs

- Holiday clubs or schemes

- Activity holiday companies (such as Camp Beaumont, Kings Camps and Supercamps)

For more information on any of these schemes, please contact Lisa Killinger [email protected]

Childcare VouchersDid you know that Chevron staff can make big savings of around £1000 per year in tax relief to help with the cost of childcare?

Chevron achieve industry first with BS11000

COMPANY NEWS

We’re proud to announce that Chevron is the first Traffic Management Company in the UK to achieve a BS11000 standard accreditation for Collaborative Working Relationships.

BS11000 is based on the concept that companies working together can often achieve much more than they can alone. This standard formally recognises and strengthens the existing relationship between Chevron, Kier Highways, Consillium, Golden Orb Solutions and Highways Traffic Management (HTM).

Managing Director, Tim Cockayne, said: “Working collaboratively with our clients has been at the heart of Chevron’s success over the years and attaining BS11000 formally recognises this.”

Working with Kier to improve site safety

Chevron’s new Airlock Gate System has scooped an award for Performance Excellence at Kier’s Area 3 Supply Chain Community Awards.

Call of dutyCHEVRON SCOOPS A DOUBLE AT HE SUPPLIER RECOGNITION AWARDSThe team celebrated not once but twice at the recent annual Highways England Supplier Recognition Scheme awards. Chevron, the only tier 2 supplier this year to be shortlisted, won the award for Building Capacity and Capability, in recognition of our recruitment and training initiatives, including our work with Rochdale Training, the British Forces Resettlement Services and Chance 2013 Ltd. The team were also presented with the Supply Chain Management award, alongside our partners, Kier Strategic Highways, Towey Duffy, Aggregate Industries, WJ Group, and Tripod Crest. The award acknowledged our supply chain’s collaborative approach, which had enabled us to start two multi-million pound schemes on day one of the new Area 9 ASC contract.

CHEVRON SHORTLISTED FOR THE CN SPECIALIST AWARDSFor the first time ever Chevron was selected as a finalist in the Training category of the Construction News Specialists Awards 2016. Sadly, we didn’t win an award this time around, but it is great to have made the shortlist from a record number of entrants this year.

The Airlock Gate system creates a sterile area of road traffic cones and barriers, which allows the passage of people, vehicles and objects between two areas, via a

series of gates which do not open simultaneously. The system can be used on full road closures, multiple lane closures and on single lane closures, if certain criteria is met. This can be ascertained at ECI stage by the Design/ Delivery Manager.

The purpose of an airlock is to provide a system to allow authorised works traffic to safely access the site and to ‘control’ errant drivers. With an airlock system installed, it can and will help to reduce the risk of danger to our workforce. An additional benefit of the airlock is to provide a ‘hold area’ where site information can be given to contractors, as well as site delivery drivers. For example, site transport plans and site contact and safety information.
