It is so hard to believe that we are nearly half way through the year already, it has been a very busy six months with lots happening in Wadeye. It is also 'that' time of the year again- tax return time. We have been notified that the Bush Tax man will be in town again so pop in to the office and see Gerald Longmair if you need help with your tax return. With some cooler days, for the next few weeks we have decided that this is a good time to close the pool for a while and do some maintenance to get ready for the warmer months. We hope that this does not inconvenience anyone too much . We will however be offering lots of other sport and recreation programs so keep an eye open for community notices about what is happening. If you would like to see a particular sport or recreation program please make sure you let us know and we will do our best to make it happen. Just call in and have a chat with Katrina and our friendly Sport and Recreation staff. The vet has been in town and de-sexed nearly 50 dogs plus handed out medicine to help keep our pets healthy. It is good to see that Wadeye community is trying to control the dog population and working towards having healthier pets. Until next month, keep safe and don't forget- Mooey's watching ..... ! Ill SPORT & REC FORUM Ill This month the Wadeye Sport & Rec Team attended the 'Victoria Daly Shire Council Sport and Recreation/ Youth Engagement Forum' in Katherine. Along with several other shire communities, the team spent the entire week learning about sports development at grass roots level and participated in workshops run by AFL NT, Australian Sports Commission, Basketball NT, Cricket Australia, Netball Australia, Softball NT, School Sports NT and many more. The forum gave Wadeye the opportunity to showcase all of its sporting talents and facilities while simultaneously learning about the abilities of other communities such as Yarralin, Timber Creek, Peppimenarti , Daly River and Kalkarindgi. I would like to congratulate Patrick Nudjulu, Sharon Nummar, Linsday Paddy and Georgina Parmbuk for their incredible enthusiasm during the entire forum and for proudly representing Wadeye as an up and coming sporting community! As a team we will now be able to take all that we have learnt from the forum and put it in to practice here in the community. I would also like to thank Tony Goodfellow who spent the entire week capturing all of the special and hilarious moments on video for all of Wad eye to enjoy on BRAACS over the next few weeks. We hope to see you all at the next Sport & Rec event! Story-Katrina Bushby, PhotosTony Goodfellow & Katrina Bushby

REGIONAL WOMEN'S LEADERSHIP FORUM

On 22-24th May 2012, Marita Chula, Stephanie Berida and Celine Melpi travelled to Katherine to attend the lndi"genous Women's Leadership Forum. Indigenous women from all different communities within the shire attended the three day program which was run by the Victoria Daly Shire Council.

In becoming future leaders, the forum was designed to educate the ladies in all different areas to further develop their skills. Sessions included learning about building strong relationships with others in which they can share with other community members once they return home.

Other sessions included health & hygeine, effective communication & motivation, group cultural sessions such as dot painting, kangaroo spearing and fire making as well as employment and pregnancy.

The forum was a great success and all of the ladies took home knowledge and skills in which they can apply to everyday life.

Well done ladies!

Wadeye Aboriginal Languages Centre - Endangered Languages Project.

The Language Centre in partnership with Batchelor Institute has been holding a series of recording session to make books, audio recordings and talking books to help preserve the languages in Wadeye and the communities and outstations surrounding Wadeye.

Page 5

The Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Thamarrurr Catholic College Wad eye is now supporting all languages in the community through language and culture programs. The resources developed as part of the Endangered Language Project will support these languages in the school and help with language revival in the community.

Languages we are working on are Murrinhpatha, Marri Ngarr, Magati Ke, Marri Tjevin, Marri Amu, Marithiyel and Djamadjong. Remember when reading the languages that some languages have different sounds and different spelling to Murrinhpatha.

When we have finished making the books, families will be able to get copies of the books and recordings to help relearn their language or to help keep their language strong.

The Elders who work on the project are fantastic, giving their time and knowledge for the families. They often work long hours to help save their languages. A big thank-you to all the elders that help the Language Centre.
