“The project was like doing an open heart
surgery on an Athlete while he is in the race”

Space Challenges
Maximize the number of gates at the terminal so that it
can handle more and more air traffic
17 acres Mega Roof
Shivaji Statue Relocation
Sound proofing
Construction of elevated road without disturbing the traffic
Major Challenges
![Page 22: Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport, Mumbai - Terminal 2](https://reader037.vdocument.in/reader037/viewer/2022102509/55826184d8b42a09258b55cb/html5/thumbnails/22.jpg)
Space Challenges…
Only 1200 acres of land
Proper Space Utilisation
Similar Airports
Kuala Lumpur Airport with same number of passengers as CSIA has an area of 30,000 acres
Delhi Airport has 5000 acres of land
Bangalore airport has 5500 acres
![Page 23: Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport, Mumbai - Terminal 2](https://reader037.vdocument.in/reader037/viewer/2022102509/55826184d8b42a09258b55cb/html5/thumbnails/23.jpg)
Maximize the Number of Gates
A special X-shape was given to the terminal to
maximize the surface area
With a regular narrow-box shape, this terminal could
have accommodated only 31 gates
With this new structure, an additional 700 feet, we can
now handle 100 more planes each day
![Page 24: Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport, Mumbai - Terminal 2](https://reader037.vdocument.in/reader037/viewer/2022102509/55826184d8b42a09258b55cb/html5/thumbnails/24.jpg)

17 Acres Mega Roof…
The Airport is maximized not in area but also in length,
190 feet above and 45,000 feet aperture space
30 Mega columns (135 ft. high) were constructed to
take the load of 15,000 tons roof
Special shape was given to the column top to share
the weight between two columns and thus reducing
the number of columns and introducing a state of art
design to the whole structure

Shivaji Statue Relocation
Location of the statue fell in the footprint of the new
user terminal
Protest by BJP and MNS against the statue relocation
So,
The statue could not be moved and should not be
damaged in any sense

A temporary highway Truss was constructed to tackle with this problem
This was the largest temporary structure ever built which prevents blockage
It consist of 12,000 steel pieces which were connected by bolts
It took 3 months to install this temporary truss
This was used to transfer the pod to the required location with the help of boggy(a hydraulic system for moving along the truss)

Sound Proofing… Plane engines make a noise of 140 decibels
A special glass structure to reduce this noise to 40 decibels
It had two layers of glass with 0.5 inch separation between them
One million square feet of this structure was neatly designed to provide a clear view of runway to the passengers
As this area was near the active runway small cranes were employed for installation purposes

Airport Connectivity Road traffic near the airport was an immense problem There was no space for an expressway in this area. A new highway must be created in order to overcome
the traffic problem This was the only road connecting airport to the main
city This road was just next to residential area due to
which construction of such an highway without disturbing the traffic was a difficult task
