"Applied theoretical chemistry" is theway Hoffmann likes to characterize theparticular blend of computations stimu-lated by experiment and the constructionof generalized models of frameworks forunderstanding that is his contribution tochemistry. The pedagogical perspectiveis very strong in his work.Notable at the same time is his reach-

ing out to the general public; he partici-pated, for example, in the production ofa television course in introductorychemistry titled "The World of Chem-istry," shown widely since 1990. And,as a writer, Hoffmann has carved out aland between science, poetry, and phi-losophy, through many essays andthree books, Chemistry Imagined withartist Vivian Torrence, The Same andNot the Same (translated into six lan-guages) and Old Wine, New Flasks:Reflections on Science and Jewish Tra-dition, with Shira Leibowitz Schmidt. Dr. Hoffmann is also an accomplished

poet and playwright. He began writingpoetry in the mid-1970s, eventuallypublishing the first of a number of col-lections, The Metamict State, in 1987,followed three years later by Gaps andVerges, then Memory Effects (1999),Soliton (2002), and most recently, inSpanish, Catalista. He has also co-writ-ten a play with fellow chemist CarlDjerassi, entitled Oxygen, which hasbeen performed worldwide, translatedinto ten languages. A second play byRoald Hoffmann, Should’ve, had its ini-tial workshop production in Edmonton,Canada in 2006.

The Elementary Education Committeeof the Chicago Section ACS presentsthis column. They hope that it will reachyoung children and help increase theirscience literacy. Please cut it out andpass it on to your children, grandchil-dren, or elementary school teachers. Itis hoped that teachers will incorporatesome of the projects in this column intotheir lesson plans.

Static Power

Kids, can you imagine being able tobend water with static electricity? Whentwo objects are rubbed against eachother, some of the electrons from oneobject jump to the other. The object thatgains electrons becomes negativelycharged; the one that loses electronsbecomes positively charged. The oppo-site charges attract each other in a waythat you can actually see.One way to collect charge is to comb

your hair with a nylon comb or rub itwith a balloon. The comb or balloon willbecome attracted to your hair, while thestrands of your hair (al l the samecharge) repel each other. The comb orballoon will also attract a stream ofwater, believe it or not, because thewater stream carries an electricalcharge.

Here is what to do:1. Comb your dry hair with a nylon

comb or rub it with an inflatedlatex balloon.

2. Turn on the tap so that a narrowstream of water is flowing (1-2mm across, flowing smoothly).

3. Move the balloon or side of thecomb close to the water (not init). As you approach the water,the stream will begin to slightlybend.

Experiments: It is fun to test thesequestions and try these variations.Does the amount of 'bend' depend onhow close the comb is to the water? Ifyou adjust the flow, does it affect howmuch the stream bends? Do combsmade from other materials work equallywell? How does a comb compare with aballoon? Do you get the same effectfrom everyone's hair or does some hairrelease more charge than others? Canyou get your hair close enough to thewater to repel it without getting it wet?

Tip: This activity works better when thehumidity is low. When humidity is high,water vapor catches some of the elec-

trons that would otherwise jumpbetween the rubbed objects. For thesame reason, your hair needs to becompletely dry when you comb it.

TWENTY YEARS OF NATION-AL CHEMISTRY DAY/WEEK

In 1986, ACS President GeorgePimentel envisioned a National Chem-istry Day (NCD) and the first celebrationwas held in 1987. It included a parade inthe streets of Washington, DC and theparticipation of 173 ACS local sections.The July 2007 issue of the Journal ofChemical Education, pages 192-3, hasan article summarizing the history of thisimportant community outreach program.

The opening two paragraphs of theJChemEd article well summarize whatNCD/W is all about:“This year marks the 20th anniversary

of National Chemistry Week (NCW).Each year NCW, a program of theAmerican Chemical Society (ACS),informs millions of people about thepositive contributions of chemistry toeveryday life. The program is designedto reach the public, especially elemen-tary and secondary school children,with positive messages about chem-istry. Thousands of ACS volunteers,teachers and students celebrate NCWin their communities and schools.“During the fourth week of every Octo-

ber, these NCW enthusiasts can befound organizing hands-on activitiesand demonstrations at malls, museums,schools, stores, and neighborhoods, toname a few. Their passion for celebrat-ing chemistry each year has capturedthe attention of thousands of childrenwho anxiously await for the exciting andfun hands-on activit ies relating toNCW’s theme.”

A different theme is selected everyyear by the ACS Committee on Com-munity Activities, the oversight commit-tee for NCW. The theme provides afocus for the celebration and empha-sizes the enormous range of applica-tions and benefits due to the creativityand effort of chemists.NCW continues to be one of the main

outreach programs of local sections.After 20 years, according to the Journalof Chemical Education article, over80% of the approximately 190 localsections participate. Approximately40% of those participating are non-ACSmembers.Since the creation of NCW, the Chica-

go section, one of the original five pilotlocal sections that began celebrating in1986, has sponsored celebrations. Thefirst one was conducted November 1,1986 at the Chicago's Museum of Sci-ence and Industry. There was an atten-dance between 300-500 people. Thekeynote speaker at the opening cere-mony was then ACS President-electMary Good. Awards were presented tooutstanding chemistry students and

there was a chemical demonstrationshow by Professor Mark Ratner ofNorthwestern University. A report fromthe day's activities written by then chair,Louis Sacco, says that it was "highlyentertaining and painlessly educational.Young people were fascinated andwatched transfixed. It was all free andthe public loved it".

In 1989, IIT hosted NCD and pho-tographs of exhibits displayed at thatevent in Wishnick Hall are accessible atchicagoacs.org. Note that the slogan(now widely used in national periodi-cals), "Chemists are the Human Ele-ment", was created at IIT for that event.

The Chicago section-sponsored cele-brations have occurred at the Museumof Science and Industry, the SheddAquarium, Loyola University of Chicagoand University of Illinois at Chicago.

Can Our Section Do More?

Analysis of the seven million peoplewho populate the seven counties in theChicago section’s geographical domainsuggests that we have 800,000 stu-dents in grades five through 12. TheChicago section’s annual NCD Satur-day event draws 600 to 1000 studentsand teachers. Thus, we are attractingonly about 0.1 % of the potential audi-ence.

Not generally known is what otherNCD/W celebrations happen in metroChicago. Given that the Chicago sec-tion has almost 5,000 members, one ofthe larger ACS local sections, and thatit contains many colleges, universitiesand high schools with space conduciveto mounting such celebrations, the pos-sibility exists that multiple celebrations,selected on a rotating basis or evenhappening concurrently, could be con-ducted. Furthermore, events could becoordinated in collaboration with localchemistry-based industry. Many morestudents could be accommodated ifthere were multiple celebration sites.Aspects of appropriate sites wouldinclude location, capacity, proximity toexpressways and public transportation.A major effort would need to be maderegarding adequate publicity as well asrecruitment of volunteers. So chemists of metro Chicago, are we

ready to raise our sights and to realizemuch more of our potential to students?

These plans include a column in TheChemical Bulletin covering topics suchas networking, career development, andvignettes of women in science, particular-ly chemistry. This month’s topic is aboutBarbara McClintock. ---

JUMPING GENES!

Barbara McClintock (1902-1992)developed an interest in genetics whileattending Cornell University where sheearned her B.S., M.S. and Ph.D.degrees. After graduation, her jobprospects were bleak. In 1935, shewrote, “No sign of a job has turned upfor me as yet. I can’t say that it makesme very peppy to still be in the unem-ployed list." In the spring of 1936, sheaccepted a position at the University ofMissouri-Columbia.

Each spring, Barbara McClintockwould plant her corn in an experimentalplot of ground at UMC. In the summer,she de-tasseled the corn and cross-pol-linated selected plants, a process toproduce genetic changes. Subsequent-ly, she planted the corn seeds andstudied the genes and 10 chromo-somes in the root stems of the cornplants. Keeping meticulous laboratoryrecords, the decades of research led tothe revolutionary hypothesis that thegenes can move around from one chro-mosome to another—they were trans-posable. The idea that genes couldmove did not seem to fit with what wasknown about genes before the 1960s. After moving to Cold Spring Harbor in

1941, she began using X-rays to lookfor genes in fruit flies, maize and otherorganisms. The X-rays caused muta-tions and the geneticist could experi-

mentally map the mutation to a particu-lar chromosome or site thereon. Shediscovered the “breakage-fusion-bridge” cycle of maize chromosomes(i.e., a mechanism of genetic transposi-tion) and reaffirmed her status as oneof the great figures of maize cytogenet-ics. The new concept of genetic trans-position led to new theories on geneticcontrol. Initially, theories of genetic con-trolling elements and regulators of geneexpression faced tremendous skepti-cism because, at that time in history,genetic material was believed to bestatic and unchanging as it passed fromone generation to the next. As historianEvelyn Fox Kerrer has written, McClin-tock’s work was greeted with “stonysilence.” The reality was puzzlement onhow to integrate the startling discover-ies into a coherent scheme.

The skepticism began to moderate inthe 1960s after Francois Jacob andJacques Monod published theories ofgenetic regulation. In the 1970s, othergeneticists reported finding genetic trans-positions in bacteria, viruses and yeast.In medical applications, genetic transpo-sitions conferred resistance to drugsused to treat bacterial, viral and yeastinfections. Genetic transpositions alsohad important implications for cancer,immunology and genetic engineering.

McClintock’s research was validatedafter there was a biochemical explana-tion of genetic transpositions. In the1970s, McClintock received widespreadrecognition of her early work in 1940-60. Her accolades were numerousthroughout the 1970s. Major awards in1981 included the first MacArthur Foun-dation “genius” Grant and the Albertand Mary Lasker Award. In 1983, at theage of 81, she received the Nobel Prizein Physiology and Medicine for her workon “mobile genetic elements,” viz.,McClintock’s discovery of genetic trans-position and jumping genes. McClintockwas the first woman to receive anunshared Nobel Prize in Physiologyand Medicine.

LOCAL STUDENTS AT THE2007 USNCO STUDY CAMPThe ACS Chicago Section announces

the names of two outstanding highschool chemistry students, Ari Frankel(Chicagoland Jewish High School) andJonathan Thirman (New Trier HighSchool), who became members of theU.S. National Chemistry Olympiad teamthat competed in the 39th InternationalChemistry Olympiad (IChO) in Moscow,Russia, July 15-24, 2007. Ari andJonathan were among the top twentystudents from the USNCO NationalExam who qualif ied to attend theUSNCO Study Camp in Colorado.The IChO involves a series of theoreti-

cal exams, laboratory exercises, andother activities aimed at identifying thebest chemistry students from participat-ing nations from around the world. Thiswas the twenty-third year of participa-tion. In 2006, the U.S. team was award-ed three silver medals and one bronzemedal. A total of 254 students repre-sented 66 countries at the 2006 IChO inGyeongsan, Republic of Korea.Congratulations to those ACS Chicago
