Methodology

The National Tragedy Study was conducted by the National Opinion

Research Center, University of Chicago. The first round of data collection began

on September 13th, 2001 and ended on September 27th. It was a telephone

interview of adults (18+) living in households with telephones in the United

States. The total sample size of 2,156 comprised a national sample of 1,013

households and additional samples in New York City (406 additional

households), Washington DC (206 additional households), and Chicagoland

areas (531 additional households). The overall response rate was 52 percent,

with a 56 percent for the national portion of the survey, 50 percent for New York

City, 41 percent for Washington DC, and 51 percent for Chicagoland areas. The

second round of data collection began on December 18th, 2001 and ended on

February 20th. The total sample size of 1,101 comprised a national sample of 805

households and a New York City sample of 296 households. The overall

response rate was 78 percent, with a 79 percent response rate for the national

portion of the survey and 73 percent for New York City.

Table 1 shows the obtained sample sizes and the AAPOR-defined

response rates for the national and New York City samples for both round 1 and

round 2. For Round 2, the rates are the percentage of Round 1 respondents that

responded in Round 2. For Round 2, 9 respondents were too incapacitated to be

interviewed and 146 were not able to be located during the field period.

Round 1 Round 2 Sample

Response Rate

Response Rate

National 1,013 56% 805 79%

New York 406 50% 296 73%

Washington 531 51% _ _

Chicago 206 41% _ _

Separate weights were constructed to adjust for nonresponse based on

age, sex, race and education. Wgt2b should be used with the national sample.

Wgt2_nyc should be used with the New York sample. WASHWGT and

CHMAWGT should be used with the Washington DC sample and Chicago

sample, respectively. The weights are scaled to sum to an effective sample size

based on inefficiency due to nonresponse adjustment. The overall design effect

for the national sample was 1.55. The overall design effect for the New York

sample was 1.80. Weights were not adjusted to account for nonresponse in

round 2.

SAMP is a variable that distinguishes the National (SAMP=1) sample from

the New York City sample (SAMP=2). PANFLG is a binary variable that can be

used to select the panel sample, that is, only those cases with data from both

rounds.

1.1 INTRO FIXED Hello, I'm ^I from the University of Chicago's National Opinion Research Center (with support from the National Science Foundation and other sources). We are conducting an important survey about the nation's reaction to the recent terrorist attacks in New York City and Washington DC. Your participation is voluntary but is very important for the study to be valid. You can refuse to answer any question without telling me why. In addition, your responses will be kept confidential and you won't be identified to anyone. Your household has been randomly selected to participate in the study and I'd like to speak to the adult member of your household who has had the most recent birthday. Are you the person with whom I should be speaking? 1 PRESS ENTER TO CONINUE 1.2 HEAR UNCODED When heard about attack As you know, on Tuesday, September 11th, there were terrorist attacks on New York and Washington.
