On the Water

Also on show was Sir Patricks’ bat, boots, and some cricket trophies, which will form part of a Sir Patrick Moore visitor attraction at Selsey Cricket Club.

Amongst the people who attended on Tuesday was John Green MBE, a friend of Sir Patrick who helped steer the development of the South Downs Planetarium from the first idea to the present, Councillor Mike Beale, Chairman of Selsey Town Council, Gill Jennings Clerk to Selsey Town Council, and Dave Lee, Chairman of Selsey Football Club.

Another friend of Sir Patrick was club fixtures secretary Ricky Halpin, who said Patrick was a true one-off character.

“Patrick was a bowler, and was very proud of his windmill action. He demonstrated it many times down the middle of the road to the amusement of locals and holidaymakers” he said. Continued on page 3

The ceremony was carried out by Club President John Reeve, and Dr John Mason MBE, close friend of Sir Patrick, from the South Downs Planetarium.

Pony rescued after it goes for a quick dip!THIS PONY was left with a long face after it stumbled into a luxury swimming pool in Chichester.

A stray pony sparked an unusual rescue operation after plunging through the hard cover of a swimming pool and getting stuck.

It was found up to its neck in the shallow end of the pool in Marsh Lane, Runcton, near Chichester, West Sussex, on Thursday morning.

Firefighters and the RSPCA were called out to the stricken animal at around 7.30am before a rescue operation swung into place.

Several thousand gallons of swimming pool water had to be pumped out before the pony was led around to the steps.

Hay was strewn around the pool to make the animal more comfortable before it stepped out.

RSPCA animal welfare officer Marie Stevens said: "We had a vet on standby to check him over and he started eating straight away, so we knew he was not too troubled by his watery adventure."

The RSPCA said the pony's short-term care had been arranged but anyone who recognises it or knows its owner is asked to call 0300 123 8018.

Continued from page 1 “I first met Patrick in 1969 when I joined Selsey Cricket Club and attended the Annual General Meeting of the Club at Patrick’s house in Selsey, ‘Farthings’. I was lucky enough to appear with other members of the Club on his “This is your Life”, in March 1974.

“Although not a player myself, I was elected to the Committee as team Manager. I have

many fond memories of times with Patrick, at the Club, and we (removed ‘always’) became very good Friends.

“If there was any fund raising on or work that needed doing in the Club, Patrick was always there.

“When we built our Pavilion, Patrick was there to help even if it meant putting in screws with a hammer!

“One of my favourite stories was when we hired a petrol driven roller. I helped to get it ready for use. Patrick said there were two holes, one for water one for petrol - but we got it the wrong way round!

“Another funny story was when Patrick was given the task of organising a disco. No one turned up, Patrick forgot to send the invitations out!”

SuSSEx Community NHS Trust (SCT) is the first NHS organisation in Sussex to have achieved accreditation as a ‘Living Wage Employer’. The Living Wage is an hourly wage rate that ensures working people on the lowest incomes achieve an improved standard of living for them and their families. The rate is currently £7.45 per hour for those working outside London.

This means that all SCT employees whose pay was below £7.45 per hour have received a pay rise to ‘top up’ their pay from 1 June 2013. The Living Wage will also apply to all new employees who join the trust.

Caroline Fox, director of human resources and organisational development at SCT said: “We recognise and value the work carried out by all our staff and we’re delighted to have achieved accreditation as a Living Wage employer. We employ more than 4,000 staff across West Sussex and this accreditation reinforces our commitment to increase the wellbeing of our staff.”

The Living Wage is calculated in line with the basic cost of living in the uK and reviewed annually.

WATERWe need to re-hydrate in this weather. I notice that if you leave a glass of water overnight it tastes better than when it came out of the tap. I gather this is because the chlorine escapes, but no-one has been able to explain why chlorine waits until it’s dark to escape, like in The Great Escape. PELICAN MADNESSI was driving down past the theatre and there was not another car in sight. I noticed a man and woman approach the pelican crossing. He pressed the button and they strode right into the road immediately, not even looking up. The lights were green. I had to brake hard and give them the stare I give stupid people. INTERESTING FACTMy youngest son showed me the spider’s web he gets every morning around his car wing mirrors. I get them on my wing mirrors too. He tells me that a new species of spider has learned to live inside electric wing mirrors and spin webs that collect flies not only in the normal way, but when the car starts motoring along. My son tells me he worked this out for himself. I believe it disproves creationism, as how could God have got a message to spiders in the last 10 years that this would work for them?

PELICAN MADNESS 2I parked up in the Northgate Car Park and bumped into the man and woman (See “Pelican Madness”) He said to her in a Yorkshire accent “Shall we go t’Arundel then?” Northerners. Are pelican crossings different up there, and stop the traffic instantly? PRISONThey are building a super-prison in Wales and closing lots of little ones, like Kingston, our local Portsmouth prison, which had capacity for 175 prisoners. But cells are always over-full and new thinking is needed. It costs us £41,000 per year per prisoner. Could not we save money and provide meaningful work for retired people by offering them to take a prisoner into their home. Obviously they’d need a snooker table and a large screen TV, which they may already have.

WHAT HAPPENS IN CHICHESTER STAYS IN CHICHESTERI know the Chichester man who deliberately punctured my front bicycle tyre. There had been a small difference of opinion as to whether I was entitled to park my bike where I did. When I returned to my bike it was punctured and he was standing a few yards away looking pleased with himself. This was not enough for me to contact the police, not enough for me to bother to do anything in fact, except walk the bike home. But it got me thinking about what would have happened anywhere else, like Chingford, or Sicily. TIME FLIES FOR SOMEThe clocks go back soon. I wish I had a pound for every time someone says to me that the summer has flown by. They always follow up by saying it’ll be Christmas before you know it. JOKEBill Murray: “Twenty years ago we had Johnny Cash, Bob Hope and Steve Jobs. Now we have no cash, no hope and no jobs. Please don’t let Kevin Bacon die.”

Two men charged with robberies and burglariesTWO MEN have been arrested and charged with a number of burglaries and robberies in Felpham committed over a five-day period last month.

Raymond Lindsay, 38, of Newcastle and Mark Gavin, 41, of Luton have both been charged with committing a robbery at Fitzleet House, Bognor on 26 August and burglaries at Admirality Road, Felpham on 24 August and Downview Road, Felpham, on 22 August. Gavin has also been charged with a robbery at the Midway, Felpham, on 25 August.

They were arrested in Weymouth on 1 September for an unrelated offence and then questioned and charged with these offences. They appeared at Weymouth Magistrates' Court on Tuesday 3 September and were

remanded in custody until 10 September.Police are still seeking witnesses to the

robbery that occurred at 1am on Sunday 25 August on Felpham Esplanade, adjacent to Longbrook (near Sea Lane), when a 44-year-old man was approached by two men as he walked home from Bognor.

They asked him if he had any money before assaulting him by punching him to the floor and kicking him, causing cuts and bruises to his face and head. He managed to escape without anything being stolen but required hospital treatment the next day for his injuries.

Anyone with information should contact Sussex Police on 101 quoting Operation Consort or email [email protected]

Man sentenced over indecent images offencesA BOGNOR man has been sentenced over offences relating to indecent images of children.

Mark Gary Matthews, 32, currently of Queensway, Bognor, but formerly of Laurel Grove, Bognor, appeared at Chichester Crown Court on Friday 30 August, and was sentenced to a total of eight months imprisonment.

He was also served with a Sexual Offence Prevention Order (SOPO) to last indefinitely, severely restricting his access to computers and to children, will be required to register as a sex offender for ten years, and has been barred by the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) indefinitely from any work with children.

He had pleaded guilty, at a previous hearing at the same court, to making two indecent images of children, contrary to the Protection of Children Act, and with failing to disclose his computer password, contrary to the Regulation of Investigatory Powers Act. He had been on court bail until his sentencing today

The prosecution, authorised by the Crown Prosecution Service, follow an intelligence-led investigation by the Paedophile On-Line Investigation Team (POLIT) of Sussex Police.

Detective Constable Chris Smith of POLIT said: "As we arrived at Matthews' address in Laurel Grove to arrest him in December 2010 he managed to run upstairs and pull the lead from his laptop, which was found to be fully encrypted.

The indecent images he was charged with making were found on a micro SD card in his bedroom. Despite many opportunities he has refused to disclose the password, which is an offence in itself, and research is still continuing to break the encryption.

"As and when we are able to access his computer, and if we then find any indecent material on it, we will consult the CPS about further charges. Failing to disclose a computer password is a very rare offence, and this is the first conviction of its type in Sussex.

"Anyone who has information about any alleged offending involving children, either current or historic, can always contact us, in confidence, via 101 or email to '[email protected]'. You can also contact independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously via 0800 555 111."

Woman assaulted in SelseyPOLICE are appealing for two motorists to come forward after they came to the aid of a woman who was attacked in Selsey.

The incident happened at about 7.30pm on Monday 19 August in Beach Road as the 40-year-old victim, who lives in Selsey, walked along with her two young children. She was approached by the man who attempted to push her.

A police spokesperson said: "Fortunately the victim was uninjured but this was a very frightening experience both for her and her young children who witnessed the incident.

"We're keen to trace anyone who saw what happened, and would particularly like to speak to two motorists who stopped at the time to help the victim.

"The offender is described as white, aged about 40, with shoulder length hair and an English accent.

"Anyone with information is asked to call police on 101 quoting serial 0873 of 19/08 or email [email protected]. Alternatively, call the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111."

Workers in Chichester ride 23 Tour de France’s in Cycle ChallengeHUNDREDS of workers in Chichester combined to cycle the equivalent of 23 Tour de France’s during the Chichester Cycle Challenge event.

The three-week competition between workplaces in the city aimed to introduce as many people to cycling as possible.

Over 700 people from 54 different organisations took part – with almost a third of these describing themselves as “non-cyclists”.

Prizes were handed out to the workplaces who managed to get the highest proportion of employees to ride a bike for 10 minutes.

The university of Chichester were champions in the largest category –employers with over 500 staff – after encouraging one in seven workers to take part.Other winners included:• The Faculty Department, University of Chichester (200-499 category);• South Downs National Park Authority (50-199 category);• Express Printing Ltd, Bognor Regis (20-49 category);• Human Resources Department, Chichester College (7-19 category); and• Insight Team, West Sussex County Council (3-6 category).

Roy Clifton, of Express Printing Ltd, Bognor Regis, said: “It was a fun initiative, everyone got involved and it brought a great atmosphere into the workplace.

“Incredibly 19 of our 22 staff joined in with many cycling to work for the first time.

“Some staff even did the morning school run before returning home to jump on their bikes and ride to work.”

County Council’s Cabinet Member for Highways and Transport, Pieter Montyn, said: “Almost 5,000 journeys were recorded during the Chichester Cycle Challenge, so by our calculations the calorie equivalent of 17,000 glasses of wine was burned off.

“We hope all those who took part can appreciate the benefits of cycling and keep on riding.

“Not only does it improve personal fitness, it helps to cut back on congestion and pollution too.”

The full list of winners, results and prizes are available by visiting www.lovetoride.net/chichester

The Cycle Challenge will return to Chichester next July.

In the meantime, people can register on the website, log their cycle trips and record how many calories they burn.

Health and Wellbeing Board signs up to Disabled Children’s CharterA PLEDGE to improve the quality of life of disabled children, young people and their families has been made by the West Sussex Health and Wellbeing Board.

A Disabled Children’s Charter has been signed by the Board, which includes representation from all bodies in West Sussex with major responsibilities for commissioning health services, public health and social care.

Chaired by County Council Leader Louise Goldsmith, the board aims to improve the health and wellbeing of the local population and reduce health inequalities.

The charter means that in a year’s time the board will have to provide evidence that they have achieved the following goals:

• We have detailed and accurate information on the disabled children and young people living in our area, and provide public information on how we plan to meet their needs.

• We engage directly with disabled children and young people and their participation is embedded in the work of our Health and Wellbeing Board.

NOW ALSO INTRODUCING DREAM ASPIRE NURTURE SUCCEED ACADEMY An elite vocational course for aspiring young dancers.

THIS SENIOR PROFESSIONAL VOCATIONAL COURSE is specifically for young people seeking a professional career in dance and the performing arts, who want to commit to a full dance training. To gain entry into the finest vocational dance academies post 16/ 18, extraordinarily high standards are expected. This course is designed to meet those standards. The DANSACADEMY is unique, however, in offering a training programme without having to fund a private education alongside. Our carefully designed curriculum totals 17 ½ hours per week of full vocational dance training, thereby providing an equivalent training to that of a full time Dance/ Stage School. The DANSACADEMY has the huge advantage of allowing pupils to remain in their current school environment, retaining their full education opportunities and facilities that your local school can offer. The structure of the course also allows students to stay at home, thereby hugely reducing the costs to parents and making a full training programme for serious young dancers possible for more families. The DANSACADEMY will benefit all young people aged 12 to 18 considering a career in the performing arts and recognises the huge diversification of skills required of modern professional performers. Genres include Ballet, Modern, Tap, Contemporary, Jazz, Repertoire, Historical Dance, Drama, Musical Theatre and Singing (optional extra). This approach to dance training will keep students on a par with children studying at full time dance/stage schools from the age of 11. As well as their dedication to this programme, teachers at the DANSACADEMY work widely in the profession and teach in other renowned vocational academies. They are well versed in the demands of the profession and have a thorough knowledge of training students to the required standard. Students will receive an assessment at the end of each year and a report detailing their progress and their ongoing suitability for the course. Audition support and ongoing nutritional advice to sustain the rigours of a dance training and to remain a healthy dancer are given to all students. As a recognition of the training available at the DANSACADEMY, The Moscow City Ballet Company have offered suitable students the opportunity to audition for a chance to perform with the company on their UK tour. Introductory price £240 per month. To arrange an audition or for a full prospectus please call 01243 605709.

Operation Watershed to re-invigorate areaHOPES are high that Operation Watershed can help volunteers in Midhurst re-invigorate a town beauty spot and stop it flooding.

Years of neglect has left South Pond polluted and impoverished of wildlife such as reptiles, insects and wildfowl.

Silt in the water affects the water levels in the pond, causing regular floods.

Desperate for the town to realise the pond’s potential, a group of volunteers formed last year as the South Pond Group to try and transform it to its former glory.

The group’s objective is to raise £75,000 to help turn the pond into a thriving corridor for wildlife, full of healthy plant, invertebrate and animal life.

Its other aim is to reduce problems with flooding.

Organiser Graham Ault said: “You should be able to go to a pond and find it alive with dragonflies and damselflies, insects in and around the water and a healthy range of pond life.

“At the moment it is very polluted and silted up and we want to do something about it.”

Graham heard about West Sussex County Council’s Operation Watershed

Active Communities Fund, set up to help community groups prepare themselves against flooding.

The group met with officers who assisted them in putting together a successful bid of £25,000 to the fund.

The funding will be used to dredge the pond as the first important step in the overall plan.

Graham said: “There are problems with flooding beside the stream that feeds into the pond.

“We also have regular flooding around the pond itself.

“We need to get the dredgers in – the water silts up very easily as it runs on sandy soil, and gets polluted in many ways – and this will definitely help.”

The dredging, intended to take place in February 2014, would be the first phase of the project to restore the pond.

Water plants would be put in place immediately after the dredging.

Longer term, the ambition is to secure further funding to carry out more improvements to the pond, including upgrading concrete areas around the pond, improving flow through the feeder stream

and installing public information boards. The group hopes the Operation Watershed

grant will unlock funds from other organisations to do this.

Graham added: “The pond itself is a very significant feature in Midhurst and a historic site.

“It was first created in 1150 and is older than most of the town.

“It is a key part of the town and much more should be made of it than it is.

“We want something that the whole town can be proud of.”

Elsewhere a further eight grants have been awarded under Operation Watershed to:• Wisborough Green Parish Council, £4,799 for a new culvert in Kirdford Road, to clear pathways on the A272, and to repair pipes at the pavilion;• Aldwick Parish Council, £16,750 for a project to clear ditches that span the borders of Avisford Park;• Sidlesham Parish Council, £17,600 to clear and improve ditches;• Sidlesham Parish Council, £5,450 to improve road gullies and culverts under the B2145;• Milland Parish Council, £1,680 to supply

and install 48 metres of land drain pipe;• Nuthurst, £2,943.60 to investigate and install a soakaway;• Bosham Parish Council, £5,588.34 to de-silt and clear Fairfield Road ditch; and• Compton Parish Council, £1,080 to de-silt and repair Noredown soakaway.

County Council Cabinet Member for Residents Services, Lionel Barnard, said:

“There have now been 23 successful applications – worth £223,000 - made by groups to our Operation Watershed Active Communities Fund.

“Another 75 ‘expressions of interest’ have also been received, which are worth £448,000.

“So if your community has an idea which will help you prepare against flooding, don’t delay – get in touch.”

If you would like to bid for the Active Communities Fund discuss it with your local County Council Community and Economic Development officer.

MARLIN KITCHENS LTD – an award winning family business run by a Lady design team – really takes you by surprise! Tucked away in Crane Street, Chichester (off of North Street), Marlin are really setting the standards in Chichester…

From ultra modern German kitchens to a traditional British painted in-frame country kitchen, Marlin have a range to suit all. You have only to read all the thank you cards and letters and look at the photos of finished kitchens in their albums to see why approximately 65% of their business comes via referrals. They’ve also got only 5* reviews online.

It is comforting to learn that Marlin are seeing a lot of repeat customers, where people have moved house and were so impressed by Marlin’s quality kitchens, reasonable prices, professional trades, customer service and organisation of the overall project, that they have come back to Marlin for another kitchen. They are now in their 14th year in Chichester and still have most of the same trades they had when they opened. In fact one customer said, “It’s like having old friends back”.

Apart from the fact that Michelle and Lynn are the key designers and therefore understand the woman’s perspective with regards to the design, colour schemes and how practical the kitchen works, another key factor to Marlin’s success is the fact that they handle the whole kitchen project , from floor

to ceiling, Marlin utilise the expertise of all their own trades – nothing is sub-contracted.

As word spreads about Marlin Kitchens, so are the areas they are reaching – from Brighton to Southampton and even the outskirts of London, Marlin’s quality work using top brand appliances and unusual designs are second to none.

All kitchens are installed by Marlin’s own experienced carpenters and registered trades. From plastering, moving/replacing radiators, replacement boilers, ceilings, lighting, gas work, electrics, tiling, flooring, bespoke cabinetry and even final decorating,

Marlin co-ordinate & organise your complete project.

Competing highly against not only the over inflated prices offered by the National Kitchen companies, but also the DIY outlets with their everlasting ‘sales, Marlin will not be beaten on quality at an affordable price tailored to suit any budget. With a free design and plan service fully fitted or a supply only everyone gets the same service

It is easy to see why Marlin are so popular when you are in their showroom, as it is such a friendly and inviting atmosphere and Lynn, Michelle and Vicky take pride in making

people feel at ease and without pressure. “There’s nothing worse than being jumped on when you walk in to a shop but just as bad is being left alone without even so much as a hello. We exercise the happy medium, asking people if they are happy to browse or whether they are looking for something specific and if they have any questions or require brochures to simply ask.”

St Wilfrid’s Hospice’s Vintage Affair a great success!

THIS YEAR’S Vintage Affair was a great success with hoards of shoppers queuing up to buy all the fabulous items which have been donated to St Wilfrid’s Hospice.

From the moment the doors opened at 9.30am the Assembly Rooms in North Street, Chichester were packed, with more than 700 people attending. The event raised over £11000 which is well up on last year.

Manager of the South Street shop Leon Stanton said: “The event was a great success and I would like to thank everyone for their generous donations which made the

event possible and to all the customers who supported us on the day.”

With the Goodwood Revival only a week away it was a great opportunity for people to buy their outfits at bargain prices. All the little details and accessories which finish off an outfit were available as well as the clothes themselves with everything from hats, scarves, gloves and jewellery for the ladies and braces, ties, cameras and binoculars for the men. There were also lots of toys, bric-a-brac and kitchenalia.

Jaqueline from Sheperton said: “I’m

flabbergasted by the range of authentic clothes and just wish I could buy more!”

Trustee Peter Stoakley attended the event and enjoyed the special atmosphere which was enhanced by all the staff and volunteers at the event being dressed in vintage clothes. He said: “What an event! Fabulous clothes at bargain price, no wonder it’s so popular.”

There was even a vintage soundtrack to the day with music from Dawn’s Vintage Do, and a chance to sit and have a rest with tea and cakes all served on pretty crockery in the tea room.

Shauna from Chichester said: “The tea and cake was lovely, I enjoyed the whole experience not only some good ideas for Revival outfits but also some items bring back lots of happy memories.”

Angela from Hove and Lila from Birdham said they’d had a lovely time: “The tea and cake were fabulous, we love the way everyone dressed up – it makes the atmosphere buzz.”

Any unsold items from the event will be available from the St Wilfrid’s Hospice shop in South Street, Chichester shop for the next two weeks.

Young children and the older kitten

Great News: Denzil & Murphy and Raz have homes!

CAT HOMING was high in August, but more homes are needed for cats and kittens of all ages. Especially pleasing was the willingness to offer homes to 5–14 year old cats.

Many kittens are available, both young kittens aged up to 6 months, and older kittens over 6 months. Most kittens, dependent on how big their body size, are neutered between 4 to 6 months. The Rescue will home kittens as a pair, or as singles.

Due to the demands of looking after a Young Kitten and their immaturity, The Rescue does not home Young Kittens where there is a child under 3 years old. However Older Kittens are just as playful, and as neutered, can go outside after being kept indoors for 2 weeks to allow adjustment to their new home location.

Some of 200+ Cats/Kittens waiting for a home:• Marianne, a pretty, fluffy torty & white 2 year old female.

• Pharell, an easy-going, friendly 2 year old black male lap cat. • Budd (black) & Laurel (black & white) are a sweet 10 year old pair who get on well.• Faye & Fizz are black 6 year old lap cats. • Ronnie is a loving, gentle 9 year tabby & white female and a lap cat and needs a quieter home now.

The Rescue asks for a minimum donation of £45 for each neutered cat or older kitten which includes vaccination, flea and worm preventative treatment, microchipping and Free PetPlan vet insurance for 4 weeks. An un-neutered younger kitten is £70 including a free neutering voucher (to be neutered at The Centre) for when the kitten is old enough.

Homing by appointment 7 days a week. Cat and Rabbit Rescue Centre, Holborow

Family Fun for Gully and FriendsTHE ALDINGBOURNE TRUST was host to a unique day out at their Country Centre – the Brighton & Hove Albion

mascot Gully together with 30 members of the Gully’s Day Out scheme, visited the Aldingbourne Country Centre to enjoy the activities the charity has on offer for a great family day out.

The Gully’s Day Out scheme was set up by Albion in the Community and the team has linked up with some of Sussex’s best loved attractions to provide free passes or vouchers for children, young people and adults with disabilities.

On their trip to the Aldingbourne Country Centre, the families got to enjoy the Open Farm and see alpacas, goats, donkeys and guinea pigs, walk around the Woodland, play giant games and mini golf, ride toy tractors, eat homemade food in the Café and spend their pocket money in the Shop. Visitors were also treated to a football tournament and Gully as goalkeeper in a penalty shoot out. “We never knew the Country Centre was here, it is a hidden gem and a lovely place to visit,” said Gully’s Day Out member Julie Ashall.

The families also got to see the Country Centre in action and witness at first hand the work of Aldingbourne clients who have learning disabilities. One visitor, Anna

Jenkins, was especially inspired by this: “it is lovely to see what opportunities there are available for people with disabilities. As a mother whose child has a disability, I’m aware the training prospects can be limited so it is great to see a centre like this.”

The Aldingbourne Country Centre is very proud to be a partner of the Gully’s Day Out scheme, especially as it supports people with disabilities to enjoy leisure activities and local attractions. The Aldingbourne Trust is an enterprising charity based in West Sussex that supports adults with learning disabilities to develop their skills, which will enable them to live independently and potentially find employment. How about some me time

A COuPLE of friends and I went to Thorpe Park a few days ago. In case you did not know (you shameful human), I just finished Year 10 and am about to embark upon the delightful adventure that is Possibly the Worst Year of My Life. But Thorpe Park is a time to forget that. I didn’t really consider coursework the whole day, not even after a couple of hours of queuing for a ride that turned out to have ‘engineering issues’ (don’t worry; we got on, some prat jumped onto the ride track or something so they just shoved him off).

It made me think about how much you need breaks in your life. Like seriously, I’m sure I will suffer with using this philosophy when I’m attempting hardcore revision, but I cannot work continuously. I need some time for myself, which involves not working. Luckily I am very pro at rewarding myself this time. In fact, I’m extremely selfless and give it

whenever I want it. The thing is, when working, it’s so easy

to think that you deserve a break for your twenty minutes of effort. And if that break lasts double that, or even just the rest of the day, I’m OK with it. Until I realise that the following day which I planned to be my free time is filled with all this STUFF. It’s boring and annoying.

Thorpe Park was like a massive metaphor for how the balance should be: wait for an hour or two lining up and working hard to get on the ride, before you have a brief burst of fun, then find a completely different ride (or, on this occasion, subject) so you have a new goal to concentrate on. Maybe buy a doughnut/ ice cream or have a pizza buffet to power you through.

And so the moral of the story is, Year 11 is like spending a fun day in Thorpe Park; hours of ecstatic work and play. But make sure you do queue and don’t just buy a fast track, cos that’s cheating and you will fail all of your exams and have to pay a fiver for it.

West Wittering voted runner-up in national beach competitionWEST WITTERING beach in West Sussex has this week been named the runner up of the Lasting Leaf uK Beach of the Year competition 2013. Launched earlier in the summer in leading women’s weekly magazine, Bella, readers were asked to name their favourite British beach and their reasons why.

West Wittering was nominated by Rikki Mace, a regular visitor to the area who commented, “Sunny, sandy and always delightful. West Wittering’s beach offers visitors a wealth of activities; lazy days in the sun, windsurfing, dune exploration, abundant wildlife, walking the dog (it's her favourite place too!) and perfect for a New Year’s Day stroll and picnic - something that has become a family tradition!”

Lasting Leaf Marketing Manager, Melanie Dean, from Selsey company, Natures Way Foods is delighted that the company’s local beach has been recognised. “With wonderful views, fabulous picnic spots, clean beaches and bags of fun for all the family it’s no surprise that the stunning West Wittering beach has been awarded second place in our search for the nation’s top beach. Like our deliciously fresh, bagged salads that

last longer, our mission was to find the nation’s favourite beach which families have fun all summer long. Boasting a Blue Flag award for cleanliness, we know that West Wittering is the perfect seaside spot, whether for a carefree summer’s day out or for a brisk winter’s walk. Well done!”

As Lasting Leaf salads stay fresher for longer, the judges were looking for beaches with long-standing appeal. Popularity and cleanliness were also important, alongside the beaches ability to provide extended summer fun.

The winner of the Lasting Leaf Beach of the Year competition has been named as Woolacombe Bay, North Devon and will be announced on 24 September in Bella magazine. Third place has been given to Carbis Bay, St Ives.

Farmers’ Market at Emsworth celebrates the abundance of the season

THE PICTURESQUE waterside town of Emsworth will be alive with the vibrant activity of the Hampshire Farmers’ Market on Saturday, 14th September, which will be celebrating all the abundance of the season including ripe and juicy fresh picked plums, blackberries, apples and of course new season game, as well as many other seasonal offerings.

A wide range of produce from across Hampshire, Emsworth and the south coast areas, will be on offer with some great sampling opportunities for visitors, who also have the chance to talk directly to the producers. The market will be open from 10 am until 2pm in Palmers Road Car Park, Emsworth.

“Our producers provide really good value and visitors to our markets are often surprised by the great savings they find from the reduced ‘food miles’ and no middle man, passed onto them. Our regular producer

offers on our website and on the day give our visitors a really cost-effective and vibrant shopping experience with a wider choice of interesting local products,” commented Alex Handford, Business Manager for the HFM.

“The success of our markets is due to the enthusiasm and dedication of our many award-winning suppliers, as well as the growing interest in buying locally produced seasonal food,” concluded Alex Handford.

The Hampshire Farmers’ Markets is a community interest, not-for-profit organisation holding regular markets across Hampshire providing numerous far reaching benefits, with additional employment created and money kept within the local economy, as well as the reduced impact on the environment.

Ricky’s your man for computer needsHALPINS COMPUTER SERVICES was founded by Ricky Halpin in 2001 and specialises in Apple Mac and PC based Computers, upgrades and sales.

Ricky has had over 35 Years’ experience in the Office equipment and Computer trade.

He started in the trade in 1976, as a Typewriter Engineer, in Hove.

Initially all the work was carried out on Manual and Electronic Typewriters, but as the years went by Golfball Typewriters came on the market, Ricky was then trained to service the new range of Facit Golfball Typewriter.

By the end of the 1970’s Typewriters became electronic with the Daisywheel coming on the market, Ricky attended several intense courses with Olivetti the Italian Manufacturer.

Eventually Typewriters became Word Processors, which changed for good the way Office operated.

The Late BBC Astronomer Sir Patrick Moore, was a Friend and client of Ricky Halpin’s.

Ricky met Patrick in 1969, when the both joined Selsey Cricket Club, and Ricky was a guest on Sir Patrick's This is Your Life in 1976.

Over the years Ricky repaired Sir Patrick's

Typewriter, including the famous 1908 Woodstock Typewriter, and also repaired his Computers.

Ricky featured with Sir Patrick on the BBC2 Programme "Computers don't bite".

In 1983, Ricky left Hove to work nearer to home, and went to work for R Johnston of Chichester, unfortunately Johnston’s folded in 1984, so Ricky and two other Engineers bought out the Service departments assets of Johnston’s and founded their own Company.

By 1987, the main business of the Company was Computers.

After nearly 20 years in business Partnership, Ricky decided in 2001 to start up his own Computer Company, Halpins Computer Services.

With his wealth of experience in mechanical and electronic engineering, and covering nearly every aspect of Office automation, he has become a valued and trusted supplier to many companies and individuals.

Over the years Ricky has gained a massive knowledge of PC Based Computers, Apple Mac and Servers.

Make this an autumn to remember with an Adult Education class!

TRADITIONALLY we think of September as the start of the new school year but it is also the start of a whole new range of exciting adult education classes run by Aspire Sussex.

Over the past year Aspire have provided 5,800 students with financial support to attend classes, helped 728 students to achieve their English and maths qualifications for FREE and supported 600 students with learning difficulties to take part in courses that support their independence. With over 11,000 students taking part in other courses last year Aspire are keen to make this a record year for learning.

Courses are available daytime, evenings and weekends across a huge range of venues Countywide making learning opportunities local to you.

Sam Boulton, Aspire Sussex Marketing Manager said: “The range of courses this

autumn is extensive; from arts and crafts, languages, cookery, health and fitness, photography, computers, English and maths plus lots more we believe we have something to offer everyone.”

Courses range from 1 day workshops, to 5, 10 and 20 week courses and yearlong qualifications.

Sam added: “We always look forward to this time of year and welcoming all students whatever their individual reason for learning. Whether you would like to gain a qualification to improve your career prospects or to learn new skills and meet new people we are committed to helping everyone achieve their aspiration.”

There are still a number of places left on courses starting later this month so to find out more visit www.aspiresussex.org.uk or contact 0845 6 01 01 61.

Revival Golf Challenge makes popular returnFOR THE SIXTH successive year Goodwood members and their guests will turn back the clock almost 100 years to compete in the annual ‘Revival Golf Challenge’ with original hickory shafted clubs and dressed in formal period costumes on Friday 13th September 2013.

More than 70 golfers are expected to take part in the 18 hole event played over the James Braid designed Downs Course which celebrates its centenary next year. In fact the event has established itself as a tribute to the great man who won five Open Championship titles over a ten year period and made an enormous impact on the game during the Edwardian era.

The Goodwood members will leave their graphite clubs and modern day golf bags at home in favour of pencil thin carry bags filled with brassies, spoons and niblicks with whippy shafts and small persimmon heads which all proved far less forgiving than their modern day counterparts.

The legendary James Braid who designed more than 200 courses in his illustrious career was also known for his trademark tweed cap and Norfolk jacket always worn with a collar and tie, symbols of his respect for the game.

Stuart Gillett, General Manager at Golf At Goodwood, said: “It really is a memorable and charming day with everyone being transported back in time to a special golfing era. It is a hugely popular event and we look forward to running it for many years to come in conjunction with the Goodwood Revival motorsport meeting.”

Prizes will be awarded for best dressed, best individual and team scores and following the event golfers will travel by vintage bus to The Revival, the world’s most popular historic motor racing meet and step back in time to the 1940s, 1950s and 1960s.

hanging out on their tour bus and so on. There are also numerous interviews with the boys’ families and a handful of sequences where they go back to their home towns on one of their rare breaks from the touring schedule.

The GoodOne Direction - This Is Us (3D) does an excellent job of presenting the boys as likeable, hard-working and fun-loving lads who seem remarkably down-to-earth, under the circumstances. Similarly, the

After a brief run-through of their background (the boys auditioned individually for The x-Factor and were put together as a band by Simon Cowell), the film settles into concert sequences of the boys performing all their hits (plus a couple of entertaining covers, such as Wheatus’ Teenage Dirtbag) interspersed with to-camera interviews with each of the boys and backstage material of the band dodging fans, clowning around, annoying their security team, playing pranks (such as dressing up and interacting with fans while in disguise),

One Direction - This Is Us (3D) is an entertaining concert-tour doc that does a great job of presenting the boys as likeable down-to-earth types and showcasing both their singing ability and the scale of the One Direction phenomenon, but it’s also painstakingly packaged and relentlessly on-message with a frustrating lack of information about what’s really going on behind the scenes.

What’s it all about?Directed by acclaimed documentarian Morgan Spurlock (Super Size Me), One Direction - This Is Us (3D) is a concert-tour documentary following boy band and current global phenomenon One Direction (Harry Styles, Louis Tomlinson, Niall Horan, Liam Payne and Zayn Malik) over the course of their 2012-13 world tour, during which they played more than 100 shows.

Running time: 92 minsDirector: Morgan Spurlock Starring: Harry Styles, Louis Tomlinson, Niall Horan, Liam Payne, Zayn Malik, Simon Cowell, Martin Scorsese, Chris Rock

concert scenes are entertaining (enhanced by some impressive digital effects that come into their own in 3D) and the boys’ singing abilities are impressively showcased, even if they cheerfully admit that they’re terrible dancers and only one member of the band (Niall) appears to be able to play an instrument.

The BadThe problem with One Direction - This Is us (3D) is that Spurlock (who never appears in the film, contrary to his usual style) stays relentlessly, resolutely on-message throughout – there’s no hint of smoking, drinking, girlfriends, groupies or partying, for example, and the boys aren’t even caught swearing on camera. Even the supposedly candid moments (such as Zayn’s mother’s tearful reaction after he buys her a house) are as carefully packaged and emotionally manipulative (though no less effective) as a similar segment on The x-Factor.

Worth seeing? One Direction - This Is Us (3D) does an excellent job of giving the fans what they want and remains both watchable and entertaining for newcomers, though it’s a shame the film doesn’t dig a little deeper.

Venus is getting lost in the evening twilight, setting about an hour after the Sun.

The Sun crosses the celestial equator on the 22nd of September signalling the autumn equinox and giving equal day and night every-where on Earth.

The path of the Moon in September runs almost level with the horizon for several nights. On the 19th the Moon is full and rises at 18:48 and looks extra large when viewed close to trees and houses. This was just right when gathering the crops, hence being called the Harvest Moon.

Food & DrinkBritish cheese tastes broadenBRITISH cheese tastes are broadening out latest retail sales data can reveal.

While British Cheddar and Stilton still hold their own as shopping basket staples nowadays shoppers are also picking up what not so long ago were considered fancy continental cheeses.

And it’s varieties such as Manchego, from Spain, Comté, from France and Taleggio, from Italy, that are soaring, making continental cheese the fastest growing area of the uK cheese market.

In the last year, sales of continental cheeses have grown by eight per cent (Kantar data July 2013) which for a market worth £375 million is strong growth.

At Tesco, the uK’s biggest seller of cheese, the trend is even more pronounced with demand up by 13 per cent. The most popular continental cheeses in the last year have been:• Chaource – sales up 350 per cent• Comté – sales up 180 per cent• Langres – sales up 160 per cent• Cave Aged Emmental – sales up 120 per

cent• Ossau-Iraty – sales up 60 per cent• Reblochon – sales up 50 per cent

Tesco cheese category buying manager David Chamberlain said: “During recent

harder times people have entertained more at home and that has led to shoppers trying new cheeses as well as picking up their British favourites like Cheddar and Stilton.

“While the likes of Brie, Camembert, Emmental, Gruyère and Gouda are all established top sellers and have graced the cheeseboards of uK cheese connoisseurs for many years, it’s lesser known varieties such as Chaource, Comté and Reblochon which are starting to win new fans in the uK.”

Continental cheeses that have seen strong growth in the last year at Tesco include:

Chaource – a creamy French soft cheese made with cow’s milk cheese and similar to Camembert though with a hint of mushroom.

Comté – a hard French cheese made from cow’s milk with a nutty, sweet flavour not dissimilar to Gruyère.

Langres – a strong French soft cheese made from cow’s milk that is similar to Epoisses. It has a distinctive orange brown rind.

Reblochon – a soft unpasteurised cheese

made in the French Alps from cow’s milk with a nutty taste and Brie like texture.

Ossau-Iraty – a smooth French cheese made from sheep’s milk that is slightly nutty with complex flavours

Cheese expert Nigel White, secretary

of the British Cheese Board said: “The uK economy is improving and some households are becoming more adventurous - total cheese consumption appears to be rising and imports have been assisted by a weakening of the Euro.”

Simon Rogan’s Cumbrian restaurant, L’Enclume, reaches top spot as the Waitrose Good Food Guide announces best restaurants in the UKCHEF Simon Rogan’s Cumbrian restaurant, L’Enclume, has achieved the top spot in Waitrose Good Food Guide 2014 for the very first time, it is revealed today, as the bestselling restaurant guide publishes its annual ranking of the uK’s Top 50 restaurants2.

Restaurants in the Good Food Guide are awarded a cooking score out of ten, with L’Enclume achieving the top score for the second year in a row. In the number two spot is Heston Blumenthal’s The Fat Duck, which has scored a perfect ten for six years in a row - longer than any other restaurant since the guide adopted its current scoring system3. Currently, L’Enclume and The Fat Duck are the only two restaurants in the uK to achieve such a score.

Elizabeth Carter, Consultant Editor of the Good Food Guide, explains what makes L’Enclume so special: ‘After achieving the top score in last year’s Guide, Rogan and his team haven’t missed a beat, despite the pressures of the past year – from opening the French at the Midland Hotel in Manchester to overseeing a pop-up restaurant in London. Rogan rightfully takes his place as leader of the pack when it comes to modern British cooking. His fantastic way with seasonal ingredients from the Cumbrian land and coast brings dishes that are a joyful celebration of this county’s magnificent diversity. L’Enclume is truly deserving of the number one spot.’

Simon Rogan, head chef at L’Enclume, comments on his success: 'I'm so proud of my staff and this phenomenal achievement with The Good Food Guide. This is something we have always dreamed about. We have received this accolade because of our focus on both the food product and the customer - keeping it natural and fresh in the kitchen, and friendly but professional in the dining room. The development of the infrastructure behind the scenes has also been a key factor to our success as we are constantly evolving and improving what we have in place, and will continue to do so.'

The Good Food Guide’s annual Top 50 restaurant ranking is highly regarded by chefs and restaurant-goers alike, with particular attention paid to those chefs and restaurants who make it into the Top 10. The 2014 edition has seen all ten restaurants from 2013 hang on to their Top 10 ranking, with Cornish favourite Restaurant Nathan Outlaw rising to number three. Restaurant Sat Bains, in Nottinghamshire, and Restaurant Gordon Ramsay in London are at the number four and five respectively. Jason Atherton’s Pollen Street Social in London remains at number six. Hibiscus, The Square and The Ledbury, also in London, have risen to spots seven, eight and nine respectively. Raymond Blanc’s Le Manoir aux Quat’Saisons is ranked at number ten.

IT’S STILL lovely and warm and I am hanging on to every sunshine ray there is! To me, the best fruit that gives me that summer feeling is watermelon. It is probably no surprise to you why this juicy, refreshing fruit has this name. Watermelon has extremely high water content, approximately 92%, giving its flesh a juicy and thirst-quenching texture while still also subtly crunchy. As a member of the Cucurbitaceae family, the watermelon is related to the cantaloupe, squash, pumpkin, cucumber, and gourd that grow on vines on the ground. What’s New and Beneficial About Watermelon?• Alongside of tomatoes, watermelon has moved up to the front of the line in recent research studies on high-lycopene foods. Lycopene is a carotenoid phytonutrient that’s especially important for our cardiovascular health, and an increasing number of scientists now believe that lycopene is important for bone health as well. Pink grapefruit and guava are two other important fruit sources of lycopene.• Health scientists are becoming more and more interested in the citrulline content of watermelon. Citrulline is an amino acid that is commonly converted by our kidneys and other organ systems into arginine (another amino acid). Particularly if a person’s body

is not making enough arginine, higher levels of arginine can help improve blood flow and other aspects of our cardiovascular health. • Recent studies have confirmed the nutritional importance of allowing a watermelon to fully ripen. Prior to ripening, when the flesh of a watermelon is primarily white in color, its beta-carotene content is near zero. Even when allowed to ripen to the white-pink stage, a watermelon still contains very little of its eventual beta-carotene content. But as it moves from white-pink to pink to red, the beta-carotene content of a watermelon steadily increases. Like lycopene and beta-carotene, total phenolic antioxidants in a watermelon also increase consistently during ripening, all the way up until the appearance of fully red flesh. Health BenefitsWatermelon provides numerous health benefits including, antioxidant support,

Fruit that gives the summer feeling!anti-inflammatory benefits and cardiovascular health. Watermelon is an unusual fruit source of the carotenoid lycopene and a rich source of phenolic antioxidants. It also contains cucurbitacin E, a triterpene anti-inflammatory phytonutrient, and unusual amounts of the amino acid citrulline. Watermelon is an excellent source of immune-supportive vitamin C and is also a very good source of free-radical-scavenging vitamin A (in several carotenoid forms, and especially in the specific form of beta-carotene). In addition, watermelon is a good source of heart-healthy potassium and magnesium. So what are you waiting for? It’s going to be so beneficial!

Can you eat Watermelon pips?Watermelon seeds do not pose any health risks. Fruited plants like watermelon, apples, etc are evolutionarily “designed”* to be eaten by animals such as deer, mice, birds, or even you. The idea is that grazing animals will eat the watermelon, seeds and all, and then pass the seeds out unharmed in the feces. The animal has then spread the seed to a new area and even surrounded it in fertilizer! So you see, eating is watermelon seeds isn’t just safe, but is a part of the natural life cycle of the watermelon. You are in no danger. Eat up!

Deborah Body“A New Year, A New Me” AT THE END of 2012 Deborah thought she was stuck in a rut and decided to set herself some goals for 2013 but they were the same goals as she had set the year before. This year she was determined to achieve them but something needed to change! She evaluated her situation and thought the only option

was to enlist a Personal Trainer to help her. Along came Caroline Taylor.

Caroline was recommended to Deborah by a previous employee of Nuffield Health. Caroline has had a long standing career as a Personal Trainer at Nuffield Health Club and within Chichester. She has helped to change many people’s lives to help them achieve their goals, not just through exercise but through life changes! Deborah’s Goals for 2013: Lose Weight • To make a difference to her life• To aid her interest in walking • To feel energised • To be injury free

Deborah booked in with Caroline at the start of the year, where they took a detailed look into her lifestyle to see what changes she could realistically make to help her achieve her goals. Although Deborah was already exercising

at the gym for a couple of years, Caroline noticed that she was lacking in other areas. She looked at her troublesome on-going injuries and how these could be improved. They also looked at her daily routine, eating habits and how best to improve her work/life balance and nutritional intake. Deborah’s job is desk based which left her feeling tired and fatigued. By looking at how Deborah’s lifestyle could be changed hopefully this

could be improved. Caroline advised Deborah that the only

way to see progress and to be able to stick to it was to make small lifestyle changes, not all at once but on a weekly basis. Deborah also had to be open to new ideas and to listen to what Caroline advised her to do.

The 1st change – Diet – Deborah was working out a lot but her food habits had not changed for some time! Often she would pop to the take-away and grab her dinner. Caroline broke this down for her. ‘It took 5 minutes to go to the take-away, order food, wait 10 minutes for it to be cooked, drive home 5 minutes and then serve = in total to grab a ‘quick and easy’ take away took 25 – 30 minutes and she always felt sluggish afterwards and had undone all the hard work and effort she had put in at the gym!’

In the amount of time it took to pick up a take-away Deborah could have cooked herself a nutritious dinner in less than the time it took to grab a curry! Caroline insists on regular, clean, healthy eating and especially hydrating the body by drinking more water. Deborah kept food diaries which were looked at on a weekly basis.

The 2nd Change – Relaxation – Caroline taught Deborah some relaxation techniques that she could use either at work or at home. These involved visualisation, colours and scripted techniques. She taught her some breathing exercises and to listen to her body!

The 3rd change – Training – after assessing her lifestyle, Deborah didn’t have

time for 5 x 1 hour sessions at the gym every week so Caroline put together 3 or 4 short 15 minute ‘at home’ exercise programmes which she would do on the days she couldn’t attend the gym. The programmes were changed all the time to challenge her body, as well as being enjoyable and fun.

The 4th change – Personal Training with Caroline – they booked in 1 session a week, which has been since January, where they would meet, train and chat. In addition to the session Caroline provided her with monthly gym workouts and as Deborah’s confidence, fitness and energy increased she challenged herself with some classes which included Fusion Stretch, one of the classes held at the club.Deborah’s Achievements to Date: • reduction of 12 % of Body Fat• A combined loss of 31 inches of her body measurements• Weight loss of 3 ½ stone• Gained lots more energy and doesn’t feel so tired• Injury free

Deborah’s Next steps… along with keeping up with the personal training, now she is injury free she is looking forward to her walking holiday.

Caroline has always said to her clients “When you find your WHY, you find your WAY and achieve WHERE you want to be” Nuffield Health Chichester, Chichester Gate. 01243 788678

A fifth of families feud over the will of a loved one

ONE IN FIVE deaths now spark family rows over the will, new research has shown. The shocking figure was revealed in a report which found millions of families end up feuding over everything from property to cash, to who keeps the urn after the death of a relative.

The research also revealed many families end up arguing – even before a relative has died – over the will and issues around how someone is cared for.

The study of 2,000 adults by wills specialist Slater & Gordon revealed a fifth of deaths in Britain now spark a bust-up between families.

Lawyer Keith Etherington said: “The death

of a loved one is always a difficult time, so it is a shame that so many families end up sustaining further emotional trauma by becoming embroiled into disputes over a will.

“Money, property and items of sentimental value are all argued over far too frequently and these disputes have resulted in many families being torn apart with relatives ruining relationships forever.

“What makes these situations so tragic is that this heartache can easily be

avoided by making sure all loved ones have an up-to-date will which leaves everyone in no doubt as to their final wishes.”

It also emerged one third of Brits have suspected other family members of taking more than was rightfully left to them in the will following the passing of a loved one.

One in four people have disagreed with how a will has been allocated, feeling certain family members were given more than they deserved.

In fact, a quarter of the study had witnessed other family member or friends being more attentive to a sick or frail relative and suspected they were doing this because

they knew it might benefit them financially once the person passed.

The same number have actively avoided someone at a funeral to avoid clashing with them, while one in twenty have had a physical fight with someone at a funeral or wake.

While one in five Brits has someone they no longer talk to after things went sour following the death of a loved one.

More than half the study felt that if you do more for a person in their life you become entitled to more in their will.

Mr Etherington added: “Disputes over a will can create long term problems with certain family members who may feel they’re entitled to more than others because of their close relationship to the deceased or the care they gave in their final days.

“But these feelings are usually subjective and only serve to show the importance of leaving a thorough will to ensure their loved-one’s wishes are clear.

“There is a general misconception that making a will should only be relevant when the person making it is of substantial wealth.

“But a will is not just about dividing up money and assets, it’s also important to

set out the final wishes of the deceased; this could extend to who should look after surviving children, what form the funeral should take or who should inherit sentimental items of little monetary value.

“It is also important that people make their intentions known to their loved ones before they die to allow everyone to fully understand the thought process behind the will and save relatives from potential arguments.”Top fallouts following a loved one’s death1. VirgoThis is a great week for networking and pressing flesh. Don’t turn down a single

opportunity as new people you meet may have the potential to

develop your career, social and love life. If you have been experiencing difficulties of late with your nearest and dearest now is a good time to work together on strengthening your

relationship.

LibraA good week for financial issues. Sorry you are unlikely

to be winning the lottery but new relationships forged at

work prove profitable. The holiday season is upon us and you feel the need to plan yours this week. Time to step outside your comfort zone and book that exotic destination you have only so far

dreamed of.

Scorpio A good week for making romantic connections. If you

are with a partner you need to open up a little more, this will not

make you vulnerable but will give your other half a greater insight into what makes you tick. If you are single enjoy the warm feeling of being desired but be ever vigilant for the player!

SagittariusIf you don’t tell them how will they know? You feel like you have been giving and giving

and getting nothing back but

have you ever thought that maybe you have brought about this current situation. You have a tendency to bottle up your resentments and then blow. Be assertive not aggressive and you will be pleasantly surprised!

CapricornJust because the tide has gone out on a particular relationship does not mean it

is lost. Remember just like the sea our connections ebb and

flow. You are going through a transitional period where a boss may become a colleague, a friend a client or lovers may become friends

and friend’s lovers. Embrace the change it’s for the best. AquariusAlthough things have been

improving on the financial and work front this does not mean

you are running with the big boys so stop acting as though you are! No one will think any the less of you if you stop spending like Midas. Focus on your love interest this week it will prove far more profitable and rewarding.

PiscesIt’s not only your charm that others find arresting but your great organizational skills

too. This is no time for self doubt, who will love you if not yourself? If you are in a relationship this would be a good time to inject a little passion into your love life. If single you will find yourself enjoying some flirtatious moments.

AriesThings are changing at a pace, learn to let go. There may be a misunderstanding this week with a loved one. You don’t

need to avoid the hurt you are feeling but try not to jump in with

both feet when you tackle the issue. A little tact will ensure you get the loving resolution to the problem you need.

TaurusDelegation is key this week;

you could be working on a collaborative project or hiring help. You can’t do it

all on your own, so don’t! Give yourself a little me time.

You know you are at your best when you have inner peace so take time out this week to undertake activities which fulfill you spiritually.

GeminiChange is happening in all

areas of your life at the moment but you do have a tendency to rush things.

You will never stop being spontaneous and that is part of

your charm but do try to manage the change a little and good things are forecast. If not you could find yourself burnt out emotionally and financially!

CancerWhy do the work if you get none of the glory? So long as you choose your words

carefully this would be a good time to let others know of

your talents and hard work. A part time hobby or interest not only brings fulfillment but may turn out to be something that could also bring financial gain.

LeoTry not to let petty jealousies and insecurities ruin any long term relationships. All that is needed is for you to use a little

candour and recognize that most of what is going on is in your

head. On the other hand, any new relationship needs to be approached with caution this week; things may not be all they seem.

First-time buyers lending at highest level since 2007LENDING to first-time buyers has hit its largest quarterly total since 2007 with 68,200 purchasing their first home in the second quarter of 2013, according to figures released by the CML.

This increase, along with growth in lending to home movers, has resulted in a jump in total house purchase lending. Remortgage lending dipped back in June compared to May, although continues to trend above levels earlier this year.

First-time buyersOur data shows that 25,300 loans were

advanced to first-time buyers in June, a 30% increase on the 19,400 loans advanced in June last year. Following the strength in first-time buyer activity in May and June, quarterly lending to first-time buyers was at its highest since 2007.

First-time buyers continued to increase the amount they borrowed - with an average loan size of £117,000 in June up from £112,500 in May. As a result of this there has been a stronger growth in the value of loans advanced to first-time buyers which totaled £3.5bn - an increase of 9% in value compared to May and 40% on June last year.

This is likely to be associated with the growth in house prices in recent months - in June 34% bought a home less than £125k, down from 37% in May.

While first-time buyers borrowed more in June, an increase in income, along with falling interest rates mean that there has been no deterioration in the affordability

of these loans as typical first-time buyers mortgage payments consumed 19.3% of first-time buyers' income - unchanged from May.

We have previously noted a small increase in the average LTV ratio for loans advanced to first-time buyers - the latest figures show this to have dropped back to 80%. However the average for the second quarter, which will be less affected by monthly fluctuations, has increased slightly - up to 81% from 80% in previous quarters.

First-time buyers accounted for 46% of all house purchase loans in June, which was up from 44% in May and considerably higher than the 38% seen on average since 2007.

Home moversLending to home movers continued to

grow on a year-on-year basis, albeit at a slower rate than for first-time buyers. Some 30,100 loans were advanced to home movers in June, a 6% increase compared to June last year. The value of these loans totaled £5.1bn.

For the second quarter of the year overall, 83,500 loans were advanced to home movers which was an increase of 27% on the first quarter of 2013 and up 4% on Q2 last year.

House purchase lendingThe house purchase sector continued to

support overall gross lending in June and the second quarter as a whole.

A total of 151,600 loans was advanced for house purchase in the second quarter, up by 30% compared to the first quarter of 2013 and 17% compared to the same period last year. In June, £8.5bn worth of loans

was advanced which was an increase of 16% compared to June last year.

Remortgage lendingWhile remortgage lending dipped in June,

growth in the first two months of the quarter resulted in an increase in the second quarter compared to quarter one. Remortgage lending continued to trend above last year's levels (based on both the second quarter and the June total), although remains subdued compared to historical levels.

Interest ratesRecent falls in rates have contributed to

a record take-up of fixed rate mortgages in June which represents 86% of all mortgages. This is the highest level of fixed rate mortgage uptake at any point for at least 20 years.

Funding conditions have shown improvement, in particular the funding for

lending scheme helped stem the upwards pressure on rates seen through the first half of 2012. Rates continued to show a downward movement in June with fixed rates falling to 3.40% on average. This is well below the 4.25% recent peak last August and somewhat below the previous recent low of 3.69% at the end of 2011.

Paul Smee, director general of the Council of Mortgage Lenders, commented: "First time buyers have become a strong driver in the growth of mortgage lending this year proving that market conditions are favourable for them.

"With increased interest in home buyers ability to cope with the eventual rise of interest rates, it is particularly reassuring to see borrowers choosing to fix their payments and for longer in record numbers."

On the waterItchenor Sailing Club celebrates 50 years of the Mirror over August Bank Holiday weekend

All the latest water sports news in chichester

MEMBERS of all ages at Itchenor Sailing Club celebrated 50 years of the Mirror over the sunny August Bank Holiday weekend with both a regatta and a special “Anything Goes” race.

The Itchenor Mirror fleet responded enthusiastically to the good weather and sailing opportunities over the weekend, with a good turnout of 24 Mirrors participating in Sunday’s ISC Regatta. The Race Officer set three times round a windward leeward course in the harbour, which saw plenty of opportunities for place changing on both beats and runs. Tom Weston and Paddy Jeffries in Tomahawk took an early lead which they managed to hold on to, though they were being chased down on each leg by Emily Heath and Monty Heath in Swift. They were closely followed by parent and child teams; Richard and Alice Bullock and Barney and Anouska Hartley.

On Bank Holiday Monday the ISC

Mirror fleet proved the continuing versatility of the Mirrorwith an "Anything Goes" race. A well-supported event saw 27 boats participating and the theme was taken to heart with some fine fancy dress costumes on display, plus all sorts of wonderful combinations in the boats, challenging the adage ‘a Mirror should be sailed two up’.

Prize giving was followed by family lunches on the lawn, listening to the relaxing Jazz quartet. Copies of the Daily Mirror and lots of confectionary aided the recuperation of both tired race participants and supporters at the end of an energetic and fun weekend.

The Mirror was designed by Jack Holt and Barry Bucknell in 1962. With its distinctive red sail, the Mirror is one of the most successful dinghy classes ever designed and more than 70,000 have been sold across the globe. Many of Britain’s top sailors have learnt to sail in a Mirror.

Out of date maps cause one in three UK drivers to arrive lateDRIVERS in the uK continue to drive with out-of-date maps, causing them to be late on a regular basis, according to research from TomTom.

From weddings to funerals to job interviews, more than one in three drivers have been late for a big occasion and 34 per cent of motorists have underestimated how long a journey would take - making them late for theatre productions, work events and even flights.

42 per cent of people using a paper map say they get lost on a car journey. This may not be surprising as one in four (24 per cent) motorists relies on a map that is more than three years old. Just one in 10 motorists has a map that is less than 12 months old.

The research among 1000 people showed that virtually everyone who owns a sat nav agrees it makes them more confident where they're going and leads to less arguments in the car. But 21 per cent of drivers admitted that the maps on their sat nav are never updated or are out of date.

"Britain's road network changes by up to

15 per cent a year yet it seems that many mapbooks used by drivers are years out of date - so relying on them to find your way around could cost you both time and money,” says a TomTom spokesman.

“However, it's just as important to keep the map up-to-date on your sat nav - which is why all TomTom devices such as the new GO series now come with four complete map updates every year, totally free, for the lifetime of the product."

Other key findings included:36% lost their way after following

someone else's directions33% have gone wrong being directed

by a partner in their car12% have missed the start of a

wedding because they mistimed their journey

7% have been late for a funeral for the same reason

27% got lost after stopping and asking someone for directions

51% use a sat nav for directions compared with 19% relying on help from a fellow

passenger, although 47% still use an old-fashioned map

"More motorists now use sat navs than

don't use them, so they've become an automatic accessory for millions of car owners,” added the TomTom spokesman.

It has to be said though, every time Gus Poyet and his team have been tested since he took over, he seems to apply the midas touch and they pass with flying colours. WILL IT BE RED, will it be white, will it be light blue, will it be faded grey? It’s a question I ask myself every time England play. The colour of the shirt that is. This week a far deeper rooted question has been debated by players, managers, journalists and of course punters. How do we improve the national game and the national team ?

The man who hopes to find the remedy is Greg Dyke. Can he succeed? Well he’s not steeped in football history but that may not

be a bad thing. He does love sport though. I had the fortune to play a few cricket matches with him in the past and despite his ill-fitting 1920’s cricket whites he was energetic, passionate and determined to win. He came across as a genuine man and that may be his biggest asset in the coming years.

There are so many layers to the debate as to why England have failed at big tournaments (and perhaps just as worrying, struggled to qualify). It’s difficult to answer the ultimate question but this week I’ve been struck by a few comments. The most notable was from one national journalist Jeremy Wilson who rightly pointed out that if English players want regular football, why don’t they go abroad? Cultural differences may be a factor and also the wages but if you want to actually PLAY the game it should be considered.

Argyle held as City get pointFOOTBALLSouth West Combination League Chichester City Ladies 1 -1 Plymouth Argyle

CHICHESTER CITY LADIES gained a point in their first match of the season in the South West Combination League as they held Plymouth Argyle to a 1-1 draw.

Plymouth finished third in the division last year and have started the season as one of the favourites to clinch the title, whilst Chichester are untested in this side of the country having been moved from the South East Combination League.

The game started brightly with both sides moving the ball well through their respective squads with neither stamping any authority on proceedings. Argyle seemed content to allow Chichester to maintain possession within their own half and allowing the Lillywhites to continue with the passing style they have become renowned for. Soon into the match Chichester had a flurry of corners against the Plymouth goal but failed to convert and had a clear cut penalty denied as Fowlie got taken to the ground in the box.

With neither side willing to commit numbers forward the match was played mainly in the middle third with Widdowson and the veteran Willett able to control play.

Soon after half time the Chichester defence fell asleep and Plymouth punished the indecision and took a one nil lead. As the match progressed both sides became frustrated and some poor challenges were made. McGlashan pushed up from the Chichester defence, the resultant over load in midfield allowed Chi to gain a strong foot hold in the Plymouth half.

The pressure told as the green and whites won another corner. This time a fantastic delivery from Strudwick sailed neatly to Alexandre at the back post who slotted the ball in for her first senior goal and the equaliser. With five minutes of normal time left the clock ran out as Chichester pushed hard for the winner and the match finished 1-1.

A bright start for Chichester Ladies as they go on the road next week to face Kenysham Ladies.

City go out on penaltiesSaturday 31 August 2013John O’ Hara League Cup Round 2Crowborough 3 -3 Chichester

By Chester BrowtonCHICHESTER were moments away from gaining their first victory of the season at Crowborough, only to concede two late goals and eventually lose in a penalty shoot-out.

The match had started badly for City; immediately from the kick-off Crowborough made a quick move down the right wing and Sam Carrington struck from 6 yards with only a few seconds on the clock.

But Chichester then started to play themselves into contention. Crows’ goalkeeper Ben Head was forced to make a great save one-on-one, and with the hosts unable to produce any fluid passing moves it was Chichester who appeared the more dangerous side.

Eight minutes after the interval, City were awarded a free-kick on the edge of the box

and Josh Case despatched the equaliser.Chichester then took the lead on 64

minutes with Joe Gromett taking advantage of confusion in the Crows’ defence, and four minutes later a poor pass from an opponent allowed Gromett to strike again and make it 3-1.

Crowborough were constantly chasing the game throughout the final 20 minutes and they were rewarded on 87 minutes when Scott Taylor’s corner was headed in by Carrington.

Substitute Elliott Wood then fired over with the Crows going for broke, and in stoppage time Chris Ransome completed the last-gasp comeback after a smart move from a throw-in.

Extra-time failed to produce any goals and, despite being the first team to register a miss, Crowborough went on to win 4-2 on penalties.

“We played very well,” said City joint-boss Sean Forry, “One down in the first 20 seconds but we then dominated the game until the last

10 minutes.“They are

a strong team with a lot of firepower,” commented Forry on the opposition. “They just pushed everything forward and bombarded us.

“We may have seen it out with a little more experience, but the equaliser was scored sixth minute of injury time and I don’t know where that time came from.

”We were the better side again in extra-time but when things aren’t going for you, you

know what will happen in a shoot-out.”City: Ender, F Smith, Madden, Heath,

Hibbert, Case, Groom, Blatchford, Gromett, van Driel, Forry. Subs: Prior, Lambert, Manners.

When deciding on a conservatory, there are many different options available to you. One characteristic they do all share though is that they will add a huge amount of value to your home. So not only will you benefit from the added space that a conservatory or orangery will give you, but the money needed to build one will be an investment rather than a cost.
