Parents and friends attended to celebrate their success in achieving work-related HE qualifications. The students were awarded Higher National Diplomas and Higher National Certificates. These nationally recognised awards represent the culmination of two years hard work developing and demonstrating organisational and management skills as well as advancing the practical skills of the students’ vocational specialism. The ceremony began with a procession of curriculum staff and the senior management team, led by Howard Waddell, head verger of the Cathedral, and the organ played by Paul Manley. Principal Shelagh Legrave proudly opened the ceremony and after CTMs invited graduands to collect their certificates, handed over to Gerry Griffith, head of HE studies, to announce the Special Awards. Gerry Griffith said, “It has been particularly pleasing to see the vast number of students who have achieved high grades. Graduation 2011

On Thursday 23rd June, our higher education (HE) students celebrated their Graduation in a memorable ceremony at the historic Chichester Cathedral.Parents and friends attended to celebrate their success in achieving work-related HE qualifications.

It is also impressive to see that a greater number are progressing to university for one more year to achieve an Honours degree

in their chosen subject. The rest have obtained or are obtaining professional level work.

“Graduation is always an exciting time of year, but we must not forget all of the students (another 170) who are on courses franchised by partner universities who will receive their Foundation Degrees, Certificates of Education, and Post Graduate Certificates of Education at ceremonies organised by the universities.

“We are also looking forward to the next academic year when two new Foundation Degrees in Digital Media and Engineering will be offered,” he added.

The Honorary Fellowship was then revealed by Shelagh to Margaret Eva OBE, head teacher of Bourne Community College. Rebecca Bunting, deputy vice chancellor University of Portsmouth, addressed the assembly with a moving and inspiring story; wishing students the very best for their future, and vice chair of the governing body, David Hett, closed the ceremony. Staff and students across the college have been celebrating achievement; rewarding students for hard work and awarding those most deserving for dedication to their course, perseverance, overcoming personal obstacles, being great team players and overall progress.

This issue celebrates the celebrations and congratulates those who have completed their courses. We wish all students luck and success in the future; whether that

means moving on to another course here at the college, going on to university, an apprenticeship or straight into voluntary or paid employment.

Unfortunately we cannot use every photo of every student as it would require us to publish a book! However, we have included some highlights, memorable moments and general shots of students being presented with their awards (selected at random).

Well done to all staff for making it through another year, and let’s look forward to the next. We still have one final issue of

Chichester Matters for 2010/11, to give you the latest news on exciting events.

If you have any ideas for next year’s Chichester Matters, ie a new name, new feature, quiz, tip or something of interest that you would be happy to provide fortnightly, please contact us with your suggestions.

We hope you have enjoyed our stories and reports over the past year and thank you for your continued contribution and support.

Electrifying SuccessSEBTA (Student Electrotherapy Beauty Therapist Award), sponsored by Carlton Group, seeks the best student electrotherapists in the UK.

The award focuses on excellence in facial electrotherapy, celebrating the crème de la crème of Level 3 students. For students, SEBTA offers a once in a lifetime opportunity to take part in a nationally renowned competition.

First year HND Student, Michelle Lincoln, was crowned top Electrotherapy Beauty Therapist of the Year. June Brent, CTM Hair & Beauty said, “Michelle has really done us proud, to be top in such a prestigious, national competition is an outstanding achievement, and as a college we will bask in the glory of having trained the winning Student of the Year 2011!”

The judges praised Michelle, who is completing her HND Level 5, for her confidence and technical skills. One judge commented, “Everyone expects great things from Chichester College because of what they have achieved so far, but Michelle definitely kept the standards and expectations high”.

Michelle was awarded a £500 personal cheque, Carlton Professional Ultraderm machine and BABTAC membership. The winning lecturer, Anne-Marie Stewart received £250 and BABTAC membership, and Chichester College

received a cheque for £1000 and the prestigious silver trophy.

Michelle said, “The competition has reinforced my belief that I can do electrotherapy. I plan to spend the money setting up my own business once I’ve finished my course.

“As a first year student, I already feel very confident working with clients and I have even found a job in a beauty salon. We are expected to supervise salons so that once finally qualified, we can hit the ground running; ready and able to step in and manage a busy salon”.

Construction Prize Giving Event 2011The Construction Prize Giving event is one of the highlights of our year. This year’s event was the best one so far and was well-attended by prize winners, parents, staff (including members of SMT), employers and industrial prize sponsors.

This event was held on the evening of Thursday 23rd June in Options and was hosted by our Deputy Principal, Andy Green. There were 22 categories from across the trades: Painting & Decorating (P & D), Carpentry & Joinery, Furniture Making, Plumbing, Brickwork and Electrical. These categories are supported by our industrial sponsors, who generously donate prizes each year, the cost of the prizes totalling well over £1,000.

It is wonderful to have an opportunity to recognise so many outstanding students from across Construction. Our annual Prize Giving event gives these students a moment to reflect on their achievement and be praised for their hard work and dedication. It is also great for the staff to see their students who have travelled such a distance in a short time, receive this recognition, as well as giving staff the chance to meet with the

employers, parents and sponsors and take pride in their nomination. The evening is not just about high achievers it is about students that have been on a journey (sometimes difficult) to conquer their goal!

Our aim is to continue with the Construction Prize Giving event, making it bigger and better every year. Next year we plan to involve more local companies and employers, as building these links will be crucial for true student success. This event has raised the profile of what we do with our current sponsors and we hope that in the future, by involving more companies, our links with industry will be reinforced.

FurnitureOn Friday 24th June, the Furniture & Cabinetmaking department displayed their high quality work across three floors of Chichester Campus. The pieces showcased ambitious and impressive examples of the creativity and skill that is channelled through the courses, including upholstery, curtains, chairs, garden furniture, wardrobes, tables, cabinets and more!

Visitors, which included friends, family, sponsors and businesses, were invited to vote for their favourite pieces by examining the detail of nominated pieces. The event attracted plenty of positive press, as always, and was a fantastic example of what can be achieved through focus, patience and dedication, along with time and support from teaching staff and student tutors.

At this year’s Furniture Show, staff and students raised money for Macmillan Cancer Support on behalf of a treasured colleague, and one of their activities was a sealed bid auction for desirable items of furniture. The five pieces of furniture in the auction were all made by our very talented students. The students have paid for the wood to make their piece but have decided to donate them as their contribution to raising money for Macmillan.

NEWS JUST IN:Congratulations are due to ex-student Chris Wallis, who has been selected to join Team UK, representing GB at WorldSkills London 2011. This competition sees Aleksandra (pictured left) now working with IKEA to realise a full-size prototype of her design that will be on display in the Southampton store towards the end of the summer.

We have had a number of excellent exhibitions and shows within the college, as well as in the city centre as part of the Chichester Festivities at both the Cathedral and various retail outlets (currently still on show).

Last week saw the final shows taking place in E Block, a celebration of achievement by all our students, and we had an overwhelming number of visitors on the opening evening. The week was culminated by the newly revitalised Fashion Show, providing students with the ability to show off both their conceptual and design skills.

On behalf of all the Art, Design and Media staff, we would like to wish all students who have either finished their studies with us, or will be continuing with us next academic year, the best of luck in their future plans.

Terry Molyneaux – Lecturer in Design

It has been a busy year for Art, Design and Media. Our area this year have been involved in a variety of live projects and exhibitions.

Fashion has undertaken a design project with the charity Barnardos, Graphics took part in the national “Design Against Fur” design competition with the Fur Free Alliance, and 3D Design student Aleksandra Wojciak won an award in a competition held by Southampton Solent University, supported by IKEA.

Charity Bike ShowThe first Chichester College Motorcycle Show took place on the 25th June, raising funds for the Sussex Air Ambulance. Over 500 bikes visited, to make the show a resounding success. Visitors voted for their choice of winner in 10 different classes, from the keenly contested Best in Show, to the Rat Bike award for the worst bike; embarrassingly won by one of our own students!Crowds wandered the rows of a vast array of machines, the owners of which were only too happy to talk about them. They included motorcycles from the Police, Fire, and Ambulance services.

Twelve clubs had displays including the Honda Goldwing Owners, Trail Riders Federation, the Vintage Japanese Club and Christian Motorcyclists Association, showing the diversity on show.

Everyone gave the show nothing but praise, so if you missed it keep Sunday 24th June free next year for a bigger and better event. All money raised was for the Air Ambulance.

The Motorcycle department recently had a stand at this year’s Banbury Run, organised by the Vintage Motorcycle Club for motorcycles built before 1931. Over 600 machines took part in the 60 mile event around the lanes of Warwickshire. Hundreds of enthusiasts saw the college stand and are now aware of us and the motorcycles courses we run. Shown above with two of the bikes are lecturers Peter Scott, Chris Hartley and Carl Lillywhite.

Level 2 Motorcycle students enjoyed a visit to the Brands Hatch Race Circuit in Kent to observe a motorcycle track day and study the riders preparing their bikes in the pit area. Despite the weather being wet for half of the day, it did make for entertaining watching as the riders struggled to control their bikes in the damp conditions.

ComputingAs 2011 comes to an end, Computing staff and students joined together to celebrate their successes.

Everyone has worked hard to achieve excellent results and their hard work and determination is evidenced by Computing’s very promising predicted grades! This year has been a successful year for Computing and, for the first time ever, the whole department came together to celebrate this. The ceremony was attended by Andy Green along with a wealth of students and parents, some of whom returned to college, after already successfully completely their qualifications, to celebrate with their lecturers and peers. Marian McTaggart and her team also joined us to acknowledge and congratulate the effort that has been demonstrated by all.

Lecturers nominated the students that they felt were most worthy for a variety of reasons, from adversity to attendance. Certificates were awarded to all the winners, including Nasser Mohiddim who had 100% attendance on his course until his lecturer, Nigel Baylis, joined him in a game of football that lead to a very unfortunately knee injury and his first day off! Nasser wasn’t able to attend the ceremony as he was in London to have a cartilage and ligament operation on his injured knee.

Award winners included Eleanor Williamson who won best overall Computing student due not only her outstanding achievement of straight distinctions on the National Diploma but also her unwavering support of peers. Her lecturer, Neil Wilkins, wrote, “Throughout her time in the Computing department Eleanor has been the model of a perfect student. She is likeable, polite and a highly motivated young lady.

The work she produces is to the highest standard and of an excellent quality. She is not only focused on delivering her own work to a high standard but is always helping and advising her peers to achieve their best potential. It is a pleasure to nominate Eleanor for the award as overall Computing best student.”

We all look forward to welcoming our new and old students back in September.

Flying HighThree of this year’s Cabin Crew students have already gained employment with their chosen airlines. Freddie Locke joined Ryan Air, Chelsea Grout is joining Easy Jet and Emma Skinner is joining British Airways. As their lecturers, Katie Osborne and I are very pleased with their success and wish them every luck in their new flying careers.

I asked Emma if she thought the Cabin Crew course had helped her in gaining her job with BA, and she responded, “The course most definitely helped me get the job! It’s enabled me to focus on why I really wanted to be cabin crew, gave more understanding into the career, and with the role plays etc, gave me great examples for my interview questions, such as going the extra mile while assisting with customers.

“It helped and improved my knowledge and understanding of the job, just how important and how much hard work cabin crew is. I also enjoyed wearing the uniform as it gave me a sense of pride and also meant it gave me good practice for the real thing!”

Chelsea added, “I particularly enjoyed taking part in the mock flight as I feel I know what to expect when starting with Easy Jet. The Cabin Crew lecturers gave me knowledge and insight in how to answer my interview questions in order to be successful. Also, the fire, smoke and wet drill training will help me a lot when doing my training with Easy Jet as I already know the basics”.

The business and management department have had a brilliant year with some excellent student feedback from all sources. There were a number of off-site visits and excursions, including the management residential to Corfe which stretched and challenged students – and a number of staff.

Sandy Hood managed to get in just about every paper with his exploits, even the AAT magazine, HND student of the year Keiko Iwamoto achieved amazing success by getting distinctions in all sixteen subjects, and Level 2 student Jasmine Vaughan was an all round performer achieving Distinction Star!

The first year Level 3 students were all lovely. Alice Emmence, who progressed from L2 was an absolute star with distinctions across the board and 100% attendance.

We are predicting some high successes from the A Level programme with some students planning to study Economics at prestigious institutions: Moc Bach – London School of Economics, Julia Klimova – St Andrews and Thomas Dunn – Oxford.

EFL song writing sessions with lyrics and music by International students, March 2011.

Support for ResearchI have been working with two learners in Out of Class Support who have created a joint magazine, which they have sold to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Research. They sold their final magazine this morning (to Shelagh) and have raised a grand total of £60!

Michelle Treagust and Sophie Harding have been studying the Pre-Vocational Studies course and have seen me once a week to develop their study, literacy and organisational skills. This magazine project incorporated all

the skills they wanted to develop and has given them an end product and something tangible to leave Support with.

Both Michelle and Sophie decided on the content, layout and presentation of their magazines, contacted the charity, fundraised themselves and have really increased in confidence as independent learners. Both Michelle and Sophie have signed up for courses at college next year.

Memorable EFL Moments

It has been an excellent year for the college’s International Partnership Programmes in Korea.

Our Joint Diploma and Degree programmes have been running for a number of years now, providing educational institutions in Korea with the ‘Chichester College Learning Experience’, delivering a UK qualification to Korean students whilst studying in their local educational institutions. This joint venture between Korean partners and ourselves enables international students to receive a recognised Chichester College education without the expense and inconvenience of moving to the UK.

The real beauty of this programme is that we have the ability to reach beyond our formal college boundaries and to provide an opportunity for ‘Changing Lives Through Learning’ around the world.

Currently we have 1,200 students on our International Partnership Programmes in the areas of Hair & Beauty, Culinary Arts, and Industrial Design. March 2012 will see two new colleges join us, offering new educational opportunities to an additional 200 Korean students.

Every year, Shelagh Legrave and Bill Brierley visit each of the Korean colleges in order to participate in both the opening ceremonies and graduation ceremonies. As well as this, curriculum staff also undertake annual teaching visits to each of our partner colleges, delivering workshops and classes to our Korean students.

I know I speak on behalf of all those involved and associated with the programme when I say that this is such an educationally rewarding and culturally valuable programme, and one we are all honoured to be a part of.

Special thanks should be given to all CTMs and staff for their help and support in managing the cover requirements for our teaching and learning commitments whilst lecturers are away on Korean teaching visits.

Warm thanks are also extended to JK Kim, the team at ISEP Korea, and the professors and assistants at our partner colleges, for looking after us during our visits to Korea.

Terry Molyneaux Korean Liaison and Lecturer in Design

This year myself and Kelly Cardwell visited DIT and SKU University to undertake our teaching visit. It was a successful visit as always; the colleges made us feel welcome and looked after us with superb hospitality, even catering for my fussy taste in food!

The students are always so grateful, keen and above all, enjoy our teaching visits. I especially found this year, that the learners went out of their way to communicate in English with us, which was fantastic; I am still trying to learn Korean so I can communicate with them in their own language too, as I think this goes along way.

Four PeaksOn Sunday 12th June 2011, 15 students and 2 staff travelled north for the 4 Peaks climb in aid of the Josh Skinner Memorial Fund. The group departed from the college at 0600 for the 12 hour drive to Fort William in Scotland.

The group was made up of a variety of students from across the college all wishing to participate in this year’s Chichester College Challenge.

The following students attended: Patryk Le Van, Axle Townsend, Tash King, Fern Trent, James Allen, Matt Bedford, Katie Hollywood, Lewis Dudley, Tom Budd, Tom Nutbrown, Konrad Tobola, Andrzej Szydlowski, Adam Saoudi, Jordan Huggett and Jake Hill.

On Monday 13th June we approached our first mountain to climb Ben Nevis at 0500, the highest mountain in the British Isles, standing at 4,408ft. A 6½ hour climb with mist and bad visibility to be met by a snow covered peak and the complete exhilaration of completing the first of four.

On completion of our decent we quickly travelled 5 hours to Loweswater for our preparation of climbing Scarfell Pike, the largest mountain in England (3,209ft). At 0700 on Tuesday 14th we started the climb in brilliant sunshine with sore limbs, but a joint determination to succeed. Three hours later after a visit to ‘Josh’s Rock’ we reached the top, tired but happy with our efforts and indeed the views.

Now we needed to get into North Wales and find our designated bunk space at Betws y Coed. Another 5 hour drive and tired bodies later we arrived to much needed beds. The team were in excellent spirits, two mountains down and two to go; halfway to our goal. Wednesday morning saw us with a late start having all enjoyed a cooked breakfast to replenish our energy levels. We made the short journey to the base of Snowdon, the highest mountain in Wales (3,560ft).

Here again: another day/climb of poor visibility, rain, mist and strong winds and indeed as we climbed these conditions grew steadily more challenging. Even the mountain train was having trouble. After 3 ½ hours the group reached the summit and stood huddled together to protect themselves from the elements. After a brief respite the group quickly returned to the base and prepared themselves for the 4 hours journey to Taly Bont on Usk for the final part of the challenge.

Thursday 15th June 2011 at 1000 saw the group in the company of Gary and Paula Skinner (Safe Drive Stay Alive team member) and Louis ( Josh’s Springer Spaniel) commence the last mountain, Pen y Fan (2,997ft). Obviously a very touching moment for Gary and Paula following

a route their son, Josh, would’ve taken. The weather was good and the climb a gentle one compared to the previous three. All safely up and down by 2pm.

The challenge saw a group of students come together in the memory of Josh Skinner who sadly was killed in October 2005 in a road traffic accident (RTA). His mother has been involved with the Safe Drive, Stay Alive campaign ever since. In Josh’s memory, we at the college annually attempt the ‘Chichester Challenge’ to raise some money for this fund. Those of you that are continuing at college next year look out for next years challenge in June 2012!

Rob Giles – Lecturer in Public Services

Beach Rugby 2011On Tuesday 28th June, Chichester College’s run of annual sunny jaunts to West Wittering estate’s beach, to win the inter-school beach tag rugby came to a sudden stop on both accounts. For the last two years, male and female students of Chichester College have won this event. The morning beach clean up at

0800hrs was promising, with staff donning ‘factor 30’ ahead of the day’s events and by 1030 registration, blue skies and warm winds promised a great day.

By 1130hrs, in the words of the band Queen, the weather had turned to “thunderbolts and lightening, very, very frightening”. The extreme weather had not been forecast by the Met or college risk assessments, which had included preventative measures for heatstroke and

drowning - not lightening strikes! Playing between downpours and lightening storms, 10 teams battled it out on four pitches until only four teams remained. The draw left Taunton (A) v Taunton (B) and Chichester College v Chichester High School games for the final. The final was between Taunton (A) and Chichester College – the same as the previous year.

Both teams gave 100% with Taunton initially opening the account with two tries that were matched, and then surpassed by Chichester College. The scores and teams were matched in every manner for both 5-minute halves. The final minute saw Chichester make it over Taunton’s try line two times, only to be sent back 5m for infringement. In the end, a mistake meant that the ball was ‘turned over’ and Taunton ran the ball into touch to claim the game with a 6 – 5 scoreline.

Credit goes to captain of the day, Darren Cassidy, who showed character and courage in leadership by ensuring that he played all members of the team in the final, not just the ‘best’ players – an inspiring approach that few coaches can claim in a competition final.

Mark Bonar – Lecturer in Sport
