Chicken LifecycleChicken Lifecycle
A hen (female) and a cockerel (male) create a fertilised egg. The mother hen lays the egg.
The hen uses her body to keep the egg warm.
After 21 days a baby chick hatches from the egg.
Soon the chick gets stronger and can stand up and run. In 3 months it will be a fully grown chicken.
Put the pictures on the following page in the correct order to show the lifecycle of a chicken.

Parts of a Chicken EggParts of a Chicken EggA chicken egg can be either fertilized or unfertilized, and is the perfect package to grow a baby
chicken. An egg is comprised of seven basic parts; the shell, membranes, the albumen (white), the yolk, the chalazae, the germinal disc and the air sac. Each of these parts have a particular job to do
and serve a certain purpose to help the chick to grow.
Label the parts of the chicken egg with the words below.
outer membrane chalazae albumen yolk
germinal disc shell air cell inner membrane

Design a Chicken CoopDesign a Chicken CoopYour task is to design a chicken coop to house six hens that lay eggs. You will need to consider the following:
• What chickens need to live a healthy, happy life
• Which materials you will use to make your chicken coop

Chickens are great pets. They provide eggs, reduce food waste and fertilise the garden.
Chickens like to spend most of their time outdoors so they need space to roam around. They like to scratch in the soil and dig for seeds and insects.
Hens like to have company so it’s good to keep at least three hens together. Roosters don’t usually like to live with other roosters but they do like to live with hens.
Chickens need a warm, dry shelter to rest each night and keep them safe from predators. A chicken coop needs to be big enough to give your chickens room to roost and nest. You will also need space for water and food containers.
Make sure your coop has screened openings to allow fresh air to enter when the door is shut.
Chickens need a roost to rest on to sleep. A pipe, stick, rounded board or old ladder works well. An ideal chicken perch is about 5cm in diameter. Allow enough roosting perches for each chicken to have at least 5cm of space on each side.
Each night at dusk make sure that all your chickens have been returned to their coop and latch it securely. This keeps them safe from the many animals that like to eat chickens and eggs.

Cut out the following pages and make a book about caring for pet chickens. Read the book to an adult.
Hens need nesting boxes to lay their eggs. Provide one nesting box for every four chickens. The nesting boxes will need to be raised off the ground, but not as high as your lowest roosting perch. Most hens like a quiet, soft nesting box. Fill it with some straw or wood shavings to make it comfortable. Eggs need to be collected from nesting boxes every day.
Chickens must have access to clean fresh water at all times. Chickens cannot drink much water at one time, so they drink often. Choose a waterer that holds enough water so they don’t run out during the day.
A waterer will keep the water clean as it stops the chickens from stepping in it or roosting over it. Put your waterer in a shady place so it doesn’t get warm in the sun.
Chickens need to be fed a balanced diet. The best way to make sure your chickens eat properly is to buy an appropriate chicken feed at a feed store. Fill a large chicken feeder with the feed and check it regularly to make sure they always have enough to eat.
You can also feed your chickens food scraps from your kitchen and allow them to scratch in your lawn and garden. This will give them plants, seeds and insects and add more variety to their diet.
