Understanding poetry

Analysing a poem helps children to appreciate its meaning and the skills of the poet. There are often two levels of

meaning to think about: one that is literal,

and one that is more abstract.

How teens are really using Facebook

New research says teens are finding Facebook a "burden" - but they don't want to miss out on the latest updates

from their friends. It seems like more of them are using Instagram. Find out more: http://

Year 8 students of Chifley College Mt Druitt took part in a Rugby League Sevens Competi-

tion at Hickeys Park, Penrith against schools in the Western Sydney region. Our students represent-

ed the school with great pride and respect and showcased a entertaining brand of Rugby League

with big tackles.

The year 8 team was captained by Tevita P who lead the team out on to the park and was

instrumental in the teams scrabble defence and led to him gaining two man of the match honours

and the overall best and fairest. Iuni A and Robert F both collectively scored a two thirds of the

teams tries for the tournament. Another student who was an obstacle for opposition players was

Trae T— who made clean covering tackles with excellent tackling techniques. Trae was voted by the

parents and coach as the Coaches Player of the tournament with his outstanding effort.

The students enjoyed the day and would like to thank the parents for their support and a

special mention to Mrs Piukana and Miss Bridgemen for the food and transport arrangements.

Today there are many changes happening in the OOHC system in NSW.

There is a need for an independent peak body organisation representing a large membership of registered foster carers in

NSW.

Earlier last year a group of volunteer foster carers, seeing the need for a peak advocacy body, came together to re-register

the FCANSW association. The name was retained from the original peak body as it is in-line with the other state and federal

Foster Care Associations. Together all Associations are united in a common cause to support foster carers and improve the

system.

Our aim is to unite all foster carers to ensure the OOHC system is operated in an honest, open transparent manner.

The Association is able to establish working partnerships and liaise with NGOs and Community Services on behalf of carers.

At present we hold regular meetings with the department and attend other meetings organized by the department, to en-

sure the voices of carers are being heard, and where possible advocate on behalf of carers in new policy development.

The Association offers its members advocacy, support and information via peer support groups, online forum, meetings and

newsletters. We endeavour to keep carers up to date with regard to changes in the foster care system in NSW. Together

with Community Services and NGO’s we wish to ensure that this transition will result in minimal impact and disruption to

carers and the children in their care.

The Association has set up an online forum www.fcansw.org.au for registered carers in NSW. Here foster carers can regis-

ter, access vital information and come together in a secure online environment to share advice, links
