Welcome to our October issue.

Living east of London is certainly feeling like the In Place. OlympicVillage, Docklands, close proximity to the Square Mile and City ofLondon, now Westfield Stratford City.

From our various locations such as Buckhurst Hill, Loughton,Epping Forest, Wanstead, South Woodford and Chigwell, most of us,are just a handful of Central Line underground stops, to a new andexciting shopper’s paradise. For those who prefer to drive, there isample parking and the journey is just a quick jaunt from home.

An exciting, vibrant selection of shops with large, artistically designedwindows, to entice shoppers and spectators as they meander aroundthe precinct in eager pursuit of goodies, luxuries, gifts, clothing, foodessentials or simply, some retail therapy. Despite the economy andother doom and gloom forecasts, a potter around an interesting andexciting array of shops can always ensure a certain feel-good-factor,our Michelle Harris takes a look at Europe’s largest shopping mallwhich happens to be on our doorstep!

Looking out for each other, caring about our local communities andworking in teams to support our neighbourhoods is a win-winsituation. Most people care about their local area and inhabitants, andoften have great ideas to help either vulnerable people, or for serviceswhich may support the community or individuals. e problem isorganising a group, having the confidence to develop a core team andthe development of each member’s responsibility. In some cases, howto also approach correct institutions in order to receive funding. Tohelp our local neighbourhoods, many UK councils are currentlyorganising support groups for their areas with volunteers willing tooffer their time and energy.

In the Epping Forest area ‘CREATE … a better neighbourhood’ hasbeen set up by Epping District Council to help groups of volunteerswith the support training needed to make groups and teams successful.ey will look at projects, give advice and may even offer funding.

is year, the Woodford Festival which runs from 8th until 16thOctober 2011, starts with an amazing 25 events on the Opening Dayand will have a total of 119 events in over 40 different venues in andaround Woodford.

It has come a long way from its humble beginnings four years agowhen Councillor Richard Hoskins came up with the idea of aCommunity Festival in Woodford and asked Ron and AnnyWortley-Millek to help in coordinating a festival that wouldshowcase the enormous amount of local talent available. Word spreadand an amazing amount of interested people turned up at theRedbridge Drama Centre, a staunch supporter from the beginning, for the inaugural meeting – we take a closer look at this wonderfullocal festival.

Until next month,

All of us have, at somepoint, stared into spaceand wondered what’s

out there?...

Films such as Star Wars, orHollywood’s vision of aliens:either a friendly ET or moresinister and deadly creations, have inspired us all. Potential lifemillions of light years away andan endless fascination withplanets; the history of theuniverse, and trying tounderstand what exactlyhappened, millions of years ago!We wonder if an asteroid hit theearth causing the dinosaur’sextinction – and could the samehappen again? More recently, whether the NASA space junkwould be seen over EppingForest (expected 23rdSeptember) and would thisbus-sized satellite hit our terrafirma? News in the press – wemight see it fly overhead – a lowrisk of it landing in Epping! Ifso, not to touch it – not to takeany remnants – alerts that thedebris would be very hot.Again, we’re looking up at thesky… and wondering.

For those of us who like to domore than just gaze but tounderstand more, check out theresearch and regular bulletinsposted by the LoughtonAstronomical Society. ere areweekly events and thewell-written and informativewebsite is packed with usefulinformation, opinions on currentspace and solar activity, and alsolinks to especially selectedwebsites in the Astro Newssection. ese include: NASA,New Scientist – Space, NewsNow – Space, News World(from the Institute of Physics). However even if just embarkingon a new interest, do not beperturbed, there is something foreverybody and at all levels. e

website also has a special sectionfor children, interested to learnmore about space: Astrokyd (forages 6-14).

If you would like to attend oneof the society’s meetings, theseare held every ursday evening(from 8 p.m. – 10 p.m.) in theScout Hall, (off LoughtonLane), eydon Bois. e hut issituated next to the cricket club.Directions to the venue are onthe map page of the website andthese meetings are open to thepublic. Whether an amateur oran experienced astronomer, alllevels of expertise are welcomeand even guest speakers arepresent to give talks and lectures. For Astrokyds – meetings areheld on the second Friday of themonth from 6.30 p.m. – 8 p.m.at St. Mary’s Hall, Coppice Row.

Loughton Astronomical Societyalso own both large and smalltelescopes including two SolarScopes. However these are formembers use only. If you alreadyown a telescope and would liketo share your images andphotographs with other stargazers, it is worth meeting othermembers of the society to showyour prized pictures, (thewebsite’s gallery has anincredibly interesting selectionof photographs), to discuss andexchange ideas, and to alsodevelop areas of mutual interestwith fellow enthusiasts.

So whether you would like tolook up and wonder, or look up,understand, appreciate anddevelop an interest as part of anorganised group, wrap up warmand go to eydon on a ursday…

• Finance. In addition, every team should have a key member to take responsibility for managing the finances. e event helped potential volunteers, to understand this role and their contribution towards the group.

Delegate packs wereavailable during the dayand the event evenincluded lunch!

Speaking about the event,Epping Forest DistrictCouncil’s Portfolio Holderfor Leisure and Wellbeing,Councillor Ricki Gadsbyexplained:

“e aim of the `Create… aBetter Neighbourhood`event was to encouragepeople to become activelyinvolved in theircommunity and to givethem the confidence to puttheir ideas into action. e informal, friendly daywas an opportunity foranyone interested informing a new communitygroup to find out how bestto move forward, and itprovided helpfulinformation and tips ontopics such as publicity, keyroles, responsibilities andfinancial management.Participants took awaysimple, but highly effective, tools and techniques thatcould be put into placestraight away to set upprojects and achievesuccessful outcomes.”

accessorising to a more elegant level, a very exciting list ofjewellery shops: Tag Heuer, Pandora, and Links of London …

Warning: Don’t leave home without your credit card!

However, despite all this fabulous choice, and as I observed thespectators and shoppers, I noticed that the vast majority of thosein their more mature years, all seemed to be carrying an M&Scarrier bag! I was slightly confused about this, or perhaps the newshoppers were still finding their way around the mall… I wasintrigued… But not for long… I noticed that Foyles too, would beopening a book store within the not, too distant future. I feel ashopping centre is as good as its book shop and Foyles is perfect!I’m sold and will be back. A great book shop, plenty of coffeeshops and this Essex Bohemian has found a sanctuary.

From a pampering perspective, an exciting and full selection ofhealth and beauty shops, also hairdressing salons such as,Supercuts and Toni and Guy. So whether shopping, indulging, pampering or just enjoying a meander, there is ample choice.

WHETHER SHOPPING, PARTICIPATING IN ANEVENT, ENJOYING A TREATMENT OR GOING TOCINEMA … WESTFIELD STRATFORD IS FABULOUS

help you through the maze, twists and turns, or even to the alfresco areas if you prefer to sit outside.

Whether dining before or afterwards, or as respite to a hard dayshopping, the restaurant selection is phenomenal. Looking at themap, the A-Z of Food has the longest list! Whether delicacies inthe Great Eastern Market on the lower ground level with atastefully arranged and styled area for either in-house dining ortake-away. L’Orchidee for Parisian style macaroons or RoyalIndian Delicacies for Indian sweetmeats. Having looked at themall, I was very pleased to find zatar in the Lebanese alcove.Normally I pick up this spice on my Middle Eastern travels(although now sold in Waitrose). If you have a preference forhummus, a splash of good quality olive oil, chopped parsley andsprinkling of zatar will raise this humble dish into somethingquite exquisite and addictive. With warmed pitta and perhapssome falafel too, a taste of the exotic Middle East, can tantalisethe most discerning of taste buds.

But aside, shopping, cinema and the Great Eastern Market, thereis also a fantastic selection of restaurants. If going out with fussychildren, you could merge an international selection of deliciouscuisine around one table - the first floor Café Court offerssomething for everybody and dependent upon mood orpreference at the time. Tortillas, Rosa’s (ai), Chip + Fish,Banger Bros, Chicago Rib Shack, Caffe Concerto plus there areother areas within the mall which offer nourishment andrefreshment. Wagamama, TGI Friday’s, Pizza express, Prêt aManger and if needing something cooler whilst walking around,Joe Delucci’s gelato (ice-cream) on the lower ground floor.

So for hours, I wandered – I wanted to buy everything. Inspiredwith fantastic ideas to brighten up the home; additions to thewardrobe, or just for the fun of it. Where to start? When to stop?… John Lewis fulfilled all expectations, M&S was terrific and Ieven nearly bought a new speaker system from Bose to liven up mylounge and to add some musical accompaniment to my daily chores.

Feeling tired, it was almost 6 p.m. and I needed to return home inorder to prepare dinner. My feet were beginning to ache and Iwas pleased that the station was so close. So as part of my exitstrategy, I returned to M&S. Confused by choice and selection, slightly bemused by the many aisles and unfamiliar territory, Ifound an old faithful and picked up a tub of hummus. By chance, passed the wholemeal pitta whilst walking towards the tills…

Slowly, I pottered back to the station and was pleased for a seaton the train. I put my handbag and carrier on my lap and then itsuddenly dawned on me: I too had left with just an M&S bag! Umm…

Phillip LeighPHILLIP LEIGH 'S LOCAL PROPERTY MARKET

Iintended to begin thispiece by saying I hopedyou enjoyed the summer,

or what there was of it. Butas I put pen to paper, yes Istill write my articles inlonghand, old habits diehard, the outsidetemperature is hoveringaround 30 degrees and thesun blazes in a totally clearblue sky.

Over the past years havingadvised my clients that thefinal prime selling time ofeach year runs from the 15thSeptember to the beginningof November, I am nowrecalculating the period inthe light of what seems to be

an “Indian Summer”. Out of interest the phraseemanates from theindigenous North AmericanIndians, and has nothing todo with the Indiansub-continent.

It will be interesting to seewhether the bonus of whatcould be an extendedSummer, will in fact expandthe traditional window oftime within the localresidential property market. For with few exceptions fine

weather makes a bigdifference to us all, and inmany cases can be thecatalyst that encourages usto decide whether weshould upgrade or extendour existing accommodationor move on to pastures green.

Despite the media’spreaching of “doom andgloom” our agency has in factexperienced greater activityin both the sales and lettingsmarket through September, albeit at what we describe asour “lower end”, which isbetween £350,000 and onemillion pounds for sales and£1000 and £4000 percalendar month for lettings, the latter demonstrating aconstant and insatiabledemand at this level.Although we have

negotiated several dealsbetween £1 - £2 million, themarket in this area has notbeen easy and it has beenincreasingly noticeable thatbuyers have been extremelychoosy, particularly if theproperty requires any formof improvement.

Although financingpurchases is continuing to befar from easy, there is agreater feeling that lendersare becoming lessdiscriminate and in manycases willing to relax theconstricting criteria theywere applying earlier in theyear. Making life a littleeasier for buyers.

roughout this year, itwould seem that theshortness of supply ofquality property has held

prices at a consistently highlevel, particularly in thetraditionally sought afterlocations. While interestrates stay at the present levelI do not expect things tochange and feel that thecurrent volume of sales areunlikely to be increased inthe present climate.Lettings are likely to staystrong with many more“accidental landlords” (thosethat have been unable toachieve the over optimisticvalues expected) enteringthe market for the first time.

In this area we areexperiencing a slight increasein rents for quality homes, those that have been kittedout in 5 star fashion, providing of courseLandlords are willing toaccommodate tenants’ everincreasing demands for atrouble free service. eprofessional landlord hasalways been aware of this, and realises that in order tokeep a good tenant, at a “full”rent, they must offer valuefor money and provideattentive quality propertymanagement. ose lookingto penny pinch and cutcorners with a D.I.Y. service,or paying an Agent apittance to manage theirmost valuable asset invariably ends up in tears.

The weather hascertainly turned cold.Coats have been

removed from wardrobes tohooks by our front doors.Handy brooms in hallways, tofacilitate the endless sweepingaway of tawny and goldenleaves from nearby trees.

Welcome to autumn! ...Hopefully most of ourreadership would have enjoyedsome form of summer respitebefore the onslaught of acolder climate, rain, sleet andprobably some snow too.Winter in England is onlybeautiful from the comfort ofa warm room. Or if suitablyattired in snug warm clothing, which keeps out the coldbiting wind and rain. At best, the weather could be described

as crisp!

So what is there to lookforward to? Well imminently, there’s Halloween which canbe incredibly good fun.Dressing up, decorating thehome or inviting friends orfamily to enjoy in someHalloween fayre withpumpkin pie, and somecreative slants for familiartreats. Perhaps Black Cat CupCakes, Deathly SpicedRoasted Pumpkin orFrightening Feta Fajitas withtooth shaped red peppers toadd to the fun! With a littleimagination and sense- of -humour, parties can potentiallybe even more quirky thanusual and in keeping with thespirit of the occasion.

However if spirits or ghostsexcite your Halloween, I haveread there are spookyencounters at the Kelvedon

governmental ministers(including the primeminister) from a nuclearattack, it was originallyconstructed to house 600military and civilians whowould take responsibility afterthis frightening aftermath. However, despite its façade asan ordinary looking cottage, once inside, tunnels lead to100 ft below the earth’ssurface. So why is this relevantto Halloween? Because ofparanormal reports, sightings, alleged evidence of ghosts, spirits and things that reallydo go bump in the night!

Haunted Happenings haveorganised a Ghost Hunt on23rd October 2011 which isunfortunately already sold out. However, due to thepopularity of this event, theyare repeating the ghost hunton 17th December again, atKelvedon Hatch, Brentwood. So if you are not scared andenjoy, the sound ofunexplained footsteps, creaks, shadows in the dark, paranormal activity and thingswhich cannot be explained…book early to avoiddisappointment.

Alternatively and also inBrentwood – there is theMayor's Halloween Disco on 28 October 2011. If you enjoydressing up and like to boogie– the disco promises to be agreat deal of fun for thosewho prefer to dance thenight away rather thanquivering in cold, darkshadows.

Personally, when it comes toghosts, spirits or even HarryPotter and scary stuff in Hogwarts, I prefer a logical

explanation and no surprises. So you won’t find me in aneerie tunnel with a shaky handholding a camera for evidence.I prefer the parties and shortlyafter Halloween, am eagerlypreparing for a fireworkinfused, Guy Fawkes Night(one week later on November5th). I opt for fun andfestivities to maintain themomentum of social gatheringsand light-hearted revelry.

Page 35: Chigwell Life Ocotober 2011

The vibrant and internationally renowned London Fashion Week isalways exciting and inspirational, and last month's event proved to bejust that.

London Fashion Week presented another unrivalled opportunity for bothestablished designers and newcomers to present their latest collections. Aconstantly buzzing key event for those who haven't got the patience to waituntil the latest fashion designs and stylish fashion trends make it into thefashion magazines.

e magic of London Fashion Week is not merely thanks to the fashiondesigners' and fashion stylists' cutting-edge collections but the mediaexcitement that accompanies them. e allure of the show is exceptional andLondon Fashion Week continues to be the top fashion event pulling visitorsfrom every corner of the globe.

It's a week where designers are free to create at will and experiment with newtrends for clothing. e world watches as fashion history is made. While weare all thinking about our autumn wardrobes and digging out our winterjumpers in an attempt to stay warm, designers were showcasing next year’sspring/summer collections during this month’s London Fashion Week.

So what we will be wearing next Spring & Summer? Here are just a selectionof those names that hit the catwalk!

BURBERRY PRORSUMOver 1500 guests attended the Burberry Prorsum Spring Summer 2012Womenswear show in London’s Hyde Park. Pippa Middleton, Kanye West,Samantha Cameron, Sienna Miller, Paul Weller were among thewell-groomed crowd of celebrities packing London Fashion Week's glossiestevent to catch a glimpse of Burberry's spring/summer 2012 collection.

Burberry Prorsum's design chief Christopher Bailey wowed the star-studdedcrowd with dozens of variations on the luxury brand's signature trenchcoat.Bailey, who has been at the helm of the historic British brand's designsfor a decade, has been credited with revitalising it and lifting its revenues.Forthe spring and summer 2012 season, he showed off a commercially-savvycollection that ensured the clothes suited all tastes.

Neutrals were ditched for rich autumnal hues which dominated alongsidecolourful abstract prints - and raffia was prominently used on tops, coats, beltsand bags.Bailey said he wanted to celebrate traditional craftsmanship that isbeing forgotten and to juxtapose that with the digital technology that thebrand is embracing.

As for its digital innovations, the fashion house showed its Twitter fans eachmodel's look before they hit the catwalk. It also opted to stream the event inHD from both its own website and Facebook page.

AQUASCUTUM LONDONClarity and optimism radiate from the SS12 Aquascutum collection, exploring the contrasting forms created by structure and drape, bringing afresh sense of femininity and a glamorous sensuality to Aquascutum’ssignature outer wear and tailoring. Aquascutum’s rich British heritagecontinues through the use of innovative technical fabrics, featuring anexclusively commissioned, laminated,British tweed and a playful explorationof coating silk georgette with a waterproof gloss finish. Outerwear is madegraphic with strips of bonded canvas and plastic trim.

Luxurious and wearable accessories echo the palette and texture of thecollection. Chic shoes combine attitude with supreme comfort and weintroduce a unique new style, both slipper and loafer - welcome to theAquascutum ‘Sloafer’.

Contemporary classics for the modern woman.

Aquascutum was founded in 1851 by high quality tailor John Emary with themission to provide stylish protection from the unpredictable British weather.e name Aquascutum originates from the two Latin words ‘aqua’ (water) and‘scutum’ (shield).

Aquascutum has been part of London city life for nearly 160 years.

JASPER CONRANAs always the front row of Jasper’s catwalk show was packed with members ofthe fashion press and his family and friends who turned out in force for a lookat what Jasper has in store for next season.

bared in floor length dresses – singular in their bold purity.

A distinctive air of ease highlights the disciplined lack of grandeur.

e flagship store at 36 Sackville Street occupies one of London’s finestpostcodes in the heart of Mayfair. It is just a stone’s throw from Fortnum andMason, the Royal Academy of Arts and Saville Row. Jasper Conran blendscontemporary with tradition, showcasing his bespoke womenswear,made-to-measure menswear, bridal, living and dining collections here.

PAUL SMITHNext Summer's spirits are high and heady with a relaxed, carefree collectionthat embraces Paul Smith’s modern, masculine aesthetic for women.

Light-as-a-feather fabrics in deconstructed shapes are soft and airy givinglayered pieces a cool simplicity.

Mannish, tailored pieces in smooth fabrics are sleek and fitted; an off-whitedouble breasted suit is elegant and sophisticated worn open at the neck. Silkhandkerchief checks are flattering in oversize proportions; shirts are tuckedinto slim trousers or drawstring pants worn low on the waist.

Laced-trimmed georgette dresses add a touch of femininity, casually wrappingaround the waist to create a sensual silhouette.

Pretty, soft-washed powder tones of blush, lavender and mauve sit next to amore masculine range of chambray blues and steely greys whilst vibrant shotsof bright buttercup, jade and bordeaux bring optimistic block colour highlightsto the palette. Hazy florals add depth, their petals inked with dark tones.

JAEGERFor Spring/Summer 2012, Jaeger London is inspired by the glamour of thelate 60s /early 70s jet set and their hideaways in far-flung, exotic destinations.

is season sees the Jaeger London woman landing on the isle of Mustique, the exclusive playground of British rock stars and royalty. Imagine the back ofa villa open onto the ocean, the billowing curtains blowing gently in the sea breeze.

Her wardrobe epitomises the laid-back elegance of the island, blended with British colonial references, rich colours and textures and inspired by Jaeger’s iconic early 1970s advertising campaigns shot against backdrops of famous locations.

Since 2005, Jaeger has focused on UK brand expansion, including its return toHarrods and Selfridges (the brand became the first retailer to operateindependently within Selfridges in the 1930s). Jaeger has 45 premium UK

freestandingfreestanding stores, including the Jaeger London branded stores in primeLondon locations, and significant shop-in-shop presence in Harrods,Selfridges, Harvey Nichols, Fenwick, House of Fraser and John Lewis.

HOUSE OF HOLLANDe trend for 70s fashion continued at House of Holland where theirspring/summer 2012 collection had a pastel punk edge.

Inspirations were Skins and Punks, SKA revival and South Beach &Miami palette. Highlights included Oversized mobre leopard, lurex stringknits, laser-cut fishnet leather, hand painted python belts and cuffs andReworked House of Holland signature tartan.

House of Holland’s collection is nothing shy of colour with mint, lilac, apricot and French Navy being featured – the clothes were fun and, asalways, Henry isn’t taking fashion too seriously.

JOHN ROCHADrawing inspiration from notions as diverse as mythical warriors, fishingon the Amazon, his ongoing fascination with the black lit paintings ofPierre Soulages, and the languid tones of Hank Williams. eSpring/Summer 2012 collection continues John Rocha’s exploration oftextures and structures and the stories they can tell.Blurring the senses between fragile and bold, wild and gentle, there is acertain duality in the collection, John creates an atmosphere of toughromanticism, his women appearing at once fierce and serene.

John’s palette is, as ever, simply beautiful - essentially monochrome - blackin all its depths, honey and soft gold, rose and broken white.Tints and hues are realised in fluid silk georgette, crepes and linen, crisp insilk organza, cottons, and extraordinary surfaces.

e modern silhouette is sculpted in structured volume, surfaces denselyworked in patchwork crochets, leathers and hand tucked raffia, or slenderdraping the body in softly pleated asymmetry, easy tailoring and elongatedskirts and trousers

John’s Spring Summer 2012 collection is informed by his enduring love ofstructure, texture and form, and his particular view of strength andtenderness.

Cool Earth has a plan to save the Rainforest. If we don’t save the Rainforest- Forget it!First we saved the Rainforest. Will they ever know we saved the planet?

Most of you know that I’ve always used my fashion shows as a platformfor my belief in the importance of social justice and the urgent need tofight climate change. I introduce the Rainforest charity, Cool Earth, and acampaign that is very close to my heart- a plan to save the most vulnerableRainforest areas by 2020.

We must begin today- tomorrow is too late. Governments have beentalking about saving the Rainforest for 40 years. Now, only half of it is left.Since launching in 2007, Cool Earth has worked with indigenousRainforest people to protect 2.5 million acres in the Western Amazon andblock the advance of illegal logging- the first stage in most Rainforestdestruction. DAVID KOMAInspired by tribal body paint and the work of contemporary artist Kim Joon,David Koma’s Spring/Summer 2012 collection focuses on the body as a canvas.

Kim Joon decorates intertwining bodies with fluid painting; Davidre-interprets this concept by using devore to act as a delicate second skin thatconceals yet reveals the female form.

Imitating the masterful artistry of Polynesian tribal tattoos, combinations ofdevore prints from small and intricate to large, abstract blocks reference the‘Pe’a’, the traditional male tattoo covering the body from the waist to theknees. e bold ‘Pe’a’ symbolizes men respected for courage; David similarlydesigns for a strong and powerful female muse.

e African zulu skirt and Dinka men’s corset are interpreted as handcraftedleather belts with fringing and pleats, that enclose a tailored and bodyconscious silhouette in light wools and silks. Combining the traditionalScottish kilt with tribal layering creates feminine, high waisted skirts withpleated panel effects.

is season sees a continuation of David Koma’s third collaboration withAlain Quilici who has designed exclusive footwear for the collection.

MARIA GRACHVOGELe Maria Grachvogel Spring/Summer 2012 collection is a feast of colour, print and texture. e palette is vibrant and fresh with bold shots ofraspberry, apple and pristine white that sit alongside languid tones ofblossom, clay and ash. Signature Maria Grachvogel pieces such as thebeautifully cut magic trousers are given an innovative twist this season withthe introduction of a skinny leg pant with a cool ankle drape and a wrappalazzo with a wide, fluid leg. Maria’s iconic catsuit appears in fresh whitecrepe, blossom and snake print wool.

is season sees the launch of Atalanta Weller for Maria Grachvogel; anexclusive footwear line and design collaboration featuring a statement,cut-away shoe boot in snakeskin, ash and blossom suede, and a sculptedspiked court.

Maria Grachvogel also celebrates the opening of her new London flagshipstore at 18 Culford Gardens, SW3. e store has been designed by RussellSage, the designer behind the interiors at the Savoy Grill, the restaurant atClaridges, the Zetter Townhouse and Stapleford Park.Maria on the store: ‘is is such a wonderful and unique space that isabsolutely perfect for us. I fell in love with it instantly after a long search forthe right ‘home’. My vision was to create an intimate space that would notonly inspire me creatively but would provide a retreat for everyone whocomes to visit us"

MENSWEAR DAY - SPRING/SUMMER 2012It isn't so different from the women's shows – there's the clothes, the models, the celebrities – but it is more relaxed.

London Fashion Week was brought to a stylish close as the men took to thecatwalk for spring/summer 2012. e main attractions covered Mexicaninfluences, dapper suits, and exotic and paisley prints.

is season, the Topman boy would not look out of place leaving a smokingParisian jazz club during the early hours of the early 1950s. Time traveldecadence aside, there were silk paisley shirts, tweed suits, lurex fishermanjumpers and fake fur. It went down a treat. Topman delivered a fine show andthe very heart of menswear day. SPG, that's Sir Philip Green, not SarahJessica Parker - the billionaire was THE VIP at the Topman show.

Christopher Shannon showed us that tassels could bring a whole new leaseof life to the humble shirt, while James Small drew quite s celebrity crowd -including Kate Moss and Jamie Hince - to see his floral shirts and shorts andOliver Spencer made coral the colour of the season.

"Menswear fashion in London is alive and kicking and I'm always proud towear British designers," said actor Luke Evans, also seen at Pringle ofScotland earlier in the week, too. "Very interesting to see Alistair Carr's newvision. His designs are strong and fresh. is has been my first LondonFashion Week and it was great to have the opportunity to see two veryBritish designers and their work," he told us.

Fashion Week is one of the highest profile fashion events in the world and one of the‘big four’ international catwalk influencers. e event is organised by the BritishFashion Council (BFC) and funded by a number of sponsors (including CanonEurope current headline sponsor for seven consecutive seasons). London FashionWeek puts London and British Fashion firmly on the global stage, generatingorders in the region of £100m; the event itself contributes £20 million to theLondon economy in terms of direct spend and attracts visitors from over 25countries including US, France, Italy, Russia, Middle East, China and UAE.

Ash ParmarQ&A WITH “THE EXTREME MAKEOVER” COSMETIC DENTIST ASH PARMAR

DENTAL IMPLANTSIn this issue, I would like todiscuss about dental implants.Implants offer one of the bestways of replacing missing teethfor improved appearance andfunction.

How long have implants beenaround? Since the 1950s, but only in thelast 20 years or so has implanttreatment become more popular.Modern implants arescientifically proven to be safe, long lasting and strong. etreatment has a success rate ofover 95% over 15 years!

What are they? A wonderful way to replace oneor more missing teeth. Animplant is a titanium rod orscrew that is fixed into thejawbone. is acts as thefoundation (just like the root ofa natural tooth) for a crown tobe fixed onto. e treatmentresults in natural looking teeththat have a very good long-termsuccess rate, often far better thanfillings and dentures. Implantsallow you to eat better and enjoythe foods you like. ey reallyhelp to improve your lifestyleand self-confidence if you haveunsightly gaps or dentures.

What are the stages of implanttreatment? Implants can be placedpainlessly under local anaesthetic.Dissolvable stitches are usedafter the surgical placement ofimplants. After 2-4 months, theimplants become well and trulyintegrated into the bone. enext stage is to create a customfitting post or anchor that issecurely screwed into theimplant. Finally, a crown can beplaced above this to replace themissing tooth, or teeth.

Does treatment hurt? No, the treatment is carried outunder local anaesthetic. Specialpainkillers and antibiotics afterthe treatment ensure that thehealing is comfortable. Mostpatients feel fine afterwards andin fact say that the treatmentwas much better than theythought it would be. ere cansometimes be some swelling andpain afterwards.

Am I put to sleep? No, this is not necessary.Treatment is oftenstraightforward and is doneunder local anaesthetic.Sometimes we use a special drugto relax you. is technique iscalled intra-venous sedation. One of the fantastic benefits ofthis technique is that you don’teven remember anything thenext day!

Will I need time off ? Not necessarily. Depending onhow many implants are placed, you may be able to go back towork in a day or two.

Will I be without teeth? No, we carefully adjust yourdenture to go over the implants.Sometimes we make atransitional bridge to replace amissing tooth.

Bone loss is irreversible andlifelong. After a tooth is lost, bonecontinues to shrink away. is ismade worse by the pressure froma removable denture, whichcontinually presses on the gums.By placing implants, the boneloss stops and it is possible toliterally have your own teeth back.

How much does it cost? is depends on each particularcase. e dentist has to assesshow much bone is available. edentist also carefully assessesyour general medical history andthe state of your dentalcondition. It is then importantto plan which implant systemand implant shapes best suityour mouth. e fees include thesurgical placement, connectionof the post(s) and the fabricationof the crown or bridge that goesover the post(s). It is importantto check if the dentist offersinterest free finance options (e.g.0% interest over 2 years) tomake the treatment affordable.Sometimes, it is necessary tocarry out a bone graft or addsome bone around the implant –there is an additional fee for this.

How do I choose the Practicefor my implant dentistry?ere are many factors toconsider: -• e skill and experience of

the implantologist• A practice that has the latest

equipment e.g. a CT Scanner (to assess the bone volume in 3D for the safe and accurate placement of implants)

• e implant system used (there are many implant systems available – is the dentist using a system that is scientifically proven, rather than one that simply costs less?)

• Is treatment done under sterile conditions (i.e. procedures like in an operating theatre in a hospital). is will greatly reduce the risk of infection and improve the success rates

• e professionalism and care of the entire dental Team

• Flexible finance options – to allow you to pay for the treatment in small installments over a longer period of time

Welcome back to another month and more aboutwalking as well as the chance to thank everyone whohas been in touch about their favourite walks, many of

which were walks on the coast in Essex, Suffolk, Kent and Sussex.anks also to John and Amanda who contacted me about a greatwalk they did on the Fife Coast path, now that one’s been on mylist for a while so you’ve now inspired me to research it further andperhaps add it to the list for 2012. If any of you dear readers areinterested, then check it out at http://www.fifecoastalpath.co.uk/

Talking of 2012’s list, my plan, of course is to walk more of theCamino and we might actually make it to the Spanish border thisyear but Hadrian’s Wall is also on my radar. I just came along somerather nice guided walks on it last week, well we’ll see who wins out.

Last month, I wrote - “At this time of the year we can experience arange of different temperatures so layers allow us to take off andput on as we need and always keep us comfortable.” And as Iwrite this it’s actually too hot to walk unless you live in hotclimates and are used to it. Who would have thought it would bethis hot as we entered October. It meant that those on the theGlowalk in aid of Haven House Hospicewww.havenhouse.org.uk/glowalk/ in Woodford, had a greatevening walk doing 10kms or 6 miles in and around their localarea and raising well needed money.

I was driving my daughter to a youth club on the evening of thewalk and we made sure we tooted the horn in support. I had, infact, thought seriously about signing up and pulling in the AthenaAngels but as many of us members were still raising money for ourwalk in aid of Maggie’s centres http://www.maggiescentres.org onSeptember 16th, it had to be missed - there’s a limit to how oftenyou can ask your friends and family to support you. However, itlooked great fun so perhaps you’ll be inspired by my words andfind yourselves walking with me in 2013.

Maggie’s Night Hike was an amazing experience and havingtrained the team since March, we’d gotten to know each otherpretty well and shared the aches, pains and the blisters. In fact all12 of those wonderful women are now much wiser about how toprevent certain debilitating conditions and many are wanting tocontinue with their new found hobby. As I mentioned the moneyis still coming in and in next month’s article I’ll hopefully be ableto let you know how much we raised. Walking 10 or 20 milesaround London through the night was really fun and as Maggiesdo the walk in co-operation with Open House, we were able toaccess buildings like the Royal Geographical Society, RIBA andCity Hall from where the views were stunning.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and there will bemany events happening, some I’m sure involving walking. It mayinterest you to know that according to a Japanese study of over30,000 women, women who walk for an hour a day can more than

half the risk of developing breast cancer. It’s a statistic worththinking about and it’s an exercise that’s so easy to build into youreveryday life.

In fact walking is the most natural form of exercise; is part of mostpeople’s everyday life and often described by health experts as“almost perfect exercise”. It offers an amazing number of benefits, find some of them listed below:-

• Helps to improve your health and fitness, therefore reducing the risk of ill health later in life.

• Improves self esteem• Relieves symptoms of depression• Reduces the risk of coronary heart disease and stroke • Lowers blood pressure • Reduces high cholesterol and improve blood lipid profile • Reduces body fat • Enhances mental well being • Increases bone density, hence helping to prevent osteoporosis • Reduces the risk of colon and breast cancer. • Reduces the risk of non-insulin dependent diabetes • Helps to control body weight • Helps osteoarthritis • Helps flexibility and co-ordination hence reducing the risk of falls• Alters fat metabolism so fat is burnt up instead of sugars,

helping to reduce weight• Increases energy• Improves your circulation giving you a fresher, healthier look• Helps build and maintain healthy bones, muscles and joints• Reduces stress• Boosts your immune system

HAPPY HEALTHY LADIES IN HAINAULT PARK

OCT Walking__ 03/10/2011 15:38 Page 1

Page 42: Chigwell Life Ocotober 2011

It can also:• Help clear your head• Stimulate creativity• Help the environment• Introduce you to new places• Be part of your social life• Work as a team builder• Increase or give you confidence• Help you feel more in control.• Be started slowly and built up gently.

As 70% of adults don’t take enough exercise to benefit their health, walking would seem to be the place to start and as a low- impact, aerobic exercise it’s suitable for just about everyone regardless ofage or size.

Just think about how flexible it is. You can do it where you want, when you want and for as long as you want and it goes with youeverywhere. Apart from a pair of flat comfortable shoes which area necessity, you have your kit with you when traveling on businessor on holidays, so no excuses. How good is that for your stressrelief and wellbeing?

Exercise should be about enjoyment so make sure your walking is.In our area we have many pleasant places to walk such as canaltowpaths, parks and river sides. Look around as you walk and getto know your own area.

If you don’t like walking alone, take your dog for a walk or borrowsomeone else’s. Better still find a buddy to walk with and as makeit a social occasion too. More and more people are joining walkersgroups such as the Ramblers and also looking at planning walkingholidays and challenges such as those mentioned.

When I started walking regularly, I quickly experienced benefits Idid not expect. My walks gave me ’me time’, allowed me to planmy day and work through issues. I was more creative and I alwaysreturned in a better mood with a clear head and a real positiveattitude. I toned up, lost weight and my back problemsdisappeared - all the things I did it for but I also sleep better, amcalmer and want to eat more healthily. Very quickly others noticedtoo and I had compliments about my glowing skin, my increasedenergy and my streamlined body.

Walking helps you feel more of a member of your community asyou are physically out and about in it more. You can walk to shopsand get to know people, you are supporting your local economyand not adding to the traffic problems. Since I have started walking I have seen the number of times thatI‘ve been ill reduce dramatically. I can’t remember the last time Ihad a really bad cold. I know it’s my walking and there’s no way Iintend to stop. Now is a good time to start to build that immunityfor the winter weather ahead.

So more tips and info for you and as usual, get in touch a shareyour thoughts or ask a question. Have a great month.

It was a very big decision and one I had been thinking aboutfor some years but always shied away from. Was it becauseof the pain and discomfort, or was it the cost? Probably a

combination of the two. But earlier this year after meeting AshParmar of “Smile Design By Ash”, I decided to take the plungeand looked into getting some functionality in my mouth withdental implants to replace the missing teeth on my upper jaw.

I have been without any back teeth at the top for years, so canonly eat on one side of my mouth – even that’s hard work as Ihave just one molar in the bottom set of teeth. It’s been a dodgysituation for years and each time I asked my National Healthdentist about it, he would always say the same “you need to hangon to that tooth Mrs Baker.” Now that’s fine if it’s rock solid, butsometime ago this vital tooth started to wobble. My stomachfelt sick as I thought of what would happen next and that if Ididn’t take action, I would be sucking my food through a strawby the time I was in my seventies!

en I met Ash. e timing was right and immediately once Imet him at the new practice in Chigwell, I knew I was in goodhands. Ash is the best in the business and offers an amazingrange of treatments. e practice is definitely state of the artwith equipment of the highest specification. e staff areprofessional, warm and friendly and do everything to putpatients at ease.

It would be true to say that visiting the dentist is daunting andwe have all heard of nightmare stories. Well my experience hasbeen completely the reverse throughout the whole journey, which continues as I write. Also, when Ash says the treatment ispainless, it is. On every occasion after my visit, I may havesuffered slight discomfort, but definitely no pain.

THE PROCESS BEGINS……

Ash carried out a very comprehensive dental assessment – unlikeI had ever had before. Photographs, impressions for models, gum measurements and detailed analysis of my smile were done.Ash then explained to me in very clear and easy to understandterms all my options, which included a removable denture or abone graft followed by implants.

As I was keen on improving my smile, he also explained themodern cosmetic options available. When I saw the

photographs of my teeth and smile before any dental treatment,I was amazed to see the shape and colour of them – I had neverreally imagined how they had changed over the years!

After digesting my professional and personalized typed reportwith all my treatment options and estimates, another bigquestion I had was “did I have the necessary bottle to goforward?” YES!

I FIRST MET WITH JESSICA THE HYGIENIST. THISEXPERIENCE DOES MAKE YOU REALISE THE IMPORTANCEOF WHAT YOU CAN DO FOR YOURSELF TO KEEP YOURTEETH AND GUMS HEALTHY. THE NEED FOR REGULARAND CORRECT TECHNIQUES OF ORAL HYGIENE IS VITALTO AVOID GUM DISEASE IN THE LONG RUN.

is was followed by root canal treatment for one of my teethwhich I gather had a dormant infection in it. I met Ash’scolleague Dr Firas Daoudi who specialises in this treatment.Once again, having heard all the horror stories, I can honestlysay the treatment was comfortable and successful. After thefoundation was healthy, Ash built the tooth up with the latesttechniques using fibre-reinforced composite to make the core ofthe tooth, followed by a porcelain crown to protect the tooth andmake it look natural.

On Friday 8th April I met Dr Andreas Weigt, the oralmaxillofacial surgeon and implantologist that works with Ash.He carried out the bone augmentation procedure, which wasrequired in the upper jaw to increase the height and width of theavailable bone for future implants. I was scared but positiveabout the outcome. I was surprised how the whole procedurewent, and this is testament to the skill and experience of Andreaswho I understand has placed over 5000 implants and carried outover 2000 bone grafts. e gums healed well, and I had thestitches out within a week or so. e process to get my fixedteeth had finally begun!

PERFECTING MY SMILEHow can I describe the next stage? I entrusted myself and mymouth to Ash who would re-master my top front teeth. Afterextensive discussion on the best way forward, and respecting mybudget, Ash recommended a process which would rebuild myfront teeth using composite, tooth coloured filling material. Inliterally one long visit, he artistically sculpted and bonded thematerial in layers on all my upper front teeth.

When I smiled, I did not show my upper teeth at all. Ash saidhe could fix that by making them longer so that when I smiled, Iwould look younger. It was the deal decider as far as I wasconcerned. Who wouldn’t want to look younger…!

I was able to enjoy my new front teeth immediately after thetreatment. I feel so reassured that all my old, discoloured fillingshave been changed and there is no more decay in my top teeth!Ash assured me that my main goal now is maintenance, and Iam so much more motivated to look after my new smile!

To complement the colour of my new upper composite veneers,Ash suggested the latest and best in teeth whitening – ZOOM.is consisted of a mould into which tiny amounts of whiteninggel was inserted daily and then placed onto the teeth. I had to take this on holiday with me – it’s funny, whilst I was getting a tan, my teeth were going whiter!

Friends joined us and as they are very close, I was keen to get a reaction. What a reaction it was – “oh wow” they said, in unison.Every aspect of the change was commented on and I went to bed that night feeling very happy indeed.

It’s been a few weeks now since I last visited the practice. I will soon have some old metal amalgam fillings replaced withwhite ones, and will then be ready for the implant placementwhich takes six months for the bone graft to heal properly.

Of course all this treatmenthas required lengthy timein the ergonomicallydesigned dentist chair, butwith digital headphonesand all the music I couldpossibly want, I lost myselfin enjoying the sounds, which took me away fromwhat was going on. erelaxing aromatherapy, calming and professionalapproach of the dentist andstaff, the special Tempurcushion to support myneck, and holding the handheld buzzer to stop Ash atany time are just some ofthe things that made mefeel at ease.

When I was sent to have my “smile design” pictures taken, Ienjoyed my time at Capture Photo Studio where I was given amake up makeover and hair style for my new pictures. at wasa lovely experience with great pictures.www.capturephotostudio.com

Ash was one of the principle dentists on the three series of theTV programme Extreme Makeover UK. He has a phenomenalselection of patients he has treated with amazing before andafter photos to help clients understand how they will look andfeel after treatment. Despite his “celebrity status”, I have foundhim to have great humility and to be genuinely caring. In my opinion dentistry has reached new heights and no longer holds the trauma of days gone by. I might even be tempted to look into the facial aesthetics also on offer at the practice to enhance the look and feel of my face. Watch this space!

When the Audi Q7 burst onto the market in 2006 the world ofSUVs had changed forever.

Entering a market dominated by quasi-agricultural vehicles, the Q7immediately demonstrated its unique credentials as an up to theminute luxury performance vehicle that could do it all.

With its purposeful and muscular coupe styling and class-beatingdriving dynamics, the new model combined the poise and comfortof a luxury performance car, with the practicality and space of alarge estate vehicle – and all with a genuine off-road capability ineven the toughest terrain.

Add to this a choice of powerful yet highly efficient petrol anddiesel engines, class-leading Quattro four wheel drive plus classicAudi design values, and the Q7 was suddenly very much in demandand leading the field in the rapidly expanding 4x4 market.

Four years later and the by then highly successful Audi Q7 wasjoined by a mid- sized stablemate, the Audi Q5.

Designed to deliver exceptional performance both on and off road, plus provide copious passenger and luggage space, this eminentlypractical model was also an instant hit, generating a waiting list forthe first 18 months until production could catch up with demand.

In common with the Audi Q7, the Q5 is available in a choice ofequipment levels, rising from a far from basic “standard trim” tolevels of luxury that would not look out of place in a limousine.

Now discerning SUV drivers can look forward to a third model tocomplete the Audi range in the form of the brand new Audi Q3.

Featuring a choice of Quattro four wheel drive or anefficiency-focused front wheel drive variant which promises 54.3mpg combined, the new model will offer a lower cost entry to theworld of the Audi Q Series.

Despite its relatively compact 4.4 metre length, the Q3 provides adeceptively spacious cabin and a 1,365 litre load capacity, makingthe new model as versatile as it is appealing.

e new Audi Q3 is priced from £24,560 and Essex Audi Centresare taking orders now for the first models, which will be availablefrom November onwards.

For more information on any aspect of Audi cars or to arrange a testdrive in the model of your choice, please contact your nearest Essex AudiCentre, details of which can be found at www.essex-audi.co.uk
