EXPLANATORY NOTES The Chicken Industry Performance Report presents the industry situation in terms of inventory by type of chicken and age classification; volume of production; DOC (live) and chicken meat imports; supply and utilization accounts; and monthly average prices at farmgate, wholesale and retail levels. The Livestock and Poultry data system of the Bureau of Agricultural Statistics (BAS) is supported by two (2) major surveys namely:

1) The Backyard Livestock and Poultry Survey (BLPS) which covers one (1) of the four (4) replicate samples of the Palay and Corn Production Survey (PCPS) consisting of 9,700 sample households in 673 sample barangays nationwide.

2) The Commercial Livestock and Poultry Survey (CLPS) covering about 579 sample layer farms and 857 broiler commercial farms and contract growers. Commercial poultry farms are those farms with a population of at least 1,000 broilers, 500 layers or a combination of 100 broilers and 100 layers.

Both surveys for chicken are simultaneously conducted every quarter in all provinces. Another survey is the Survey of Dressing Plant which covers around 105 accredited dressing plants ( LGU-supervised) nationwide and is undertaken in coordination with the National Meat Inspection Service (NMIS).

iii CHICKEN INDUSTRY PERFORMANCE REPORT

The country’s total chicken population as of January 1, 2010 was 158.93 million birds, or merely 0.17 percent higher than last year’s headcount of 158.66 million birds. Broiler inventory dropped by 8.36 percent, while layer population posted an increase of 13.72 percent. Native chicken inventory was higher by 2.05 percent.

In 2009, total chicken production grew by 1.53 percent. Lower growth in chicken output was due to the effects of several typhoons that hit the country during the 4th quarter. Chicken egg production went up by 5.04 percent. This increment came from commercial farms which contributed around 77.47 percent of the total egg output. Chicken and chicken egg production contributed around 13.68 percent to the total gross output of agriculture in 2009.

Gross value of chicken and chicken egg production in 2009 at current prices grew by 10.05 percent and 11.66 percent, respectively. These gains were attributed to the increases in output and farm prices during the year. (PAR Jan-Dec. 2009)

Volume of Chicken production

In 2009, total volume of chicken production was estimated at 1,300.90 thousand metric tons. This was 1.53 percent higher than last year’s output of 1,281.32 thousand metric tons. Lower growth in the annual chicken production was attributed to typhoons and floods that affected the broiler industry during the 4th quarter. Except for this quarter which registered a negative growth of 2.32 percent, the previous three (3) quarters of the year registered output gains compared with the same periods a year ago.

Broiler production accounted for around 62.50 percent of the total chicken output. The total chicken output consisted of broiler meat, meat of native and improved breed of village chicken, meat of culled layers and, meat of culled breeders (GP and PS) and meat of culled game fowls.

Volume of Chicken egg production

Total egg production in 2009 reached 368.46 thousand metric tons. This posted an increase of 5.04 percent from last year’s level of 350.79 metric tons. The growth in egg output was attributed to the increasing layer inventory from commercial farms particularly in top egg producing regions.

4 CHICKEN INDUSTRY PERFORMANCE REPORT

Total egg production in 2009 was estimated at 368,464 metric tons. Of this total, about 77.5 percent were produced from commercial layer farms and the rest came from native chicken in backyard farms.

In 2009, total egg output from layer/commercial farms grew by 7.02 percent, while egg production from native/backyard farms went down by 1.25 percent, in comparison with last year’s levels

More than 65 percent of the total egg output were produced in the country’s top producing regions namely: Central Luzon, CALABARZON, Central Visayas and Northern Mindanao.

More than 65 percent of the total egg output were produced in the country’s top producing regions namely: Central Luzon, CALABARZON, Central Visayas and Northern Mindanao.

iii CHICKEN INDUSTRY PERFORMANCE REPORT
