2. CHILD LABOURChild labour refers to theemployment of children inany work that depriveschildren of their childhood, interferes with their ability toattend regular school, andthat is mentally, physically, socially or morally dangerousand harmful. This practice isconsidered exploitative bymanyinternational organisations.Legislations across the worldprohibit child labour. 3. Primary causesInternational LabourOrganisation (ILO) suggestspoverty is the greatestsingle cause behind childlabour. For impoverishedhouseholds, income from achilds work is usuallycrucial for his or her ownsurvival or for that of thehousehold. Income fromworking children, even ifsmall, may be between 25to 40% of these householdincome. 4. Cultural causesIn European history when child labour was common, as well asin contemporary child labour of modern world, certain culturalbeliefs have rationalised child labour and thereby encouragedit. Some view that work is good for the character-building andskill development of children. In many cultures, particularlywhere informal economy and small household businesses thrive, the cultural tradition is that children follow in their parentsfootsteps. 5. Child labour images 6. Macroeconomic causesChild labour is a serious problemin India, Pakistan, Indonesia,Thailand and Philippines but it isnot a new problem.Macroeconomic causesencouraged widespread childlabour across the world, overmost of human history. Theysuggest that the causes for childlabour include both the demandand the supply side. Whilepoverty and unavailability ofgood schools explain the childlabour supply side, they suggestthat the growth of low payinginformal economy rather thanhigher paying formal economy isamongst the causes of thedemand side. 7. Current statistics on childlabour 8. The Victorian Era The Victorian Era mostcommonly refers to thereign of Queen Victoriathat took place fromapproximately 1837 to 1901.In 1870, near the midst ofher reign, about 750,000children were engaged inchild labor. That onlyincludes children less thanfifteen years of age, andexcludes children whoworked in their familysbusiness, or on theirfamilys farm. 9. Child Maids At around the age of twelve, children were hired to workas maids or nursery maids.Maids were normally girlsthat helped take care ofchildren or clean around thehouse. When older maidswere hired, they wereexpected to cook food fortheir master. Life as a maidwasnt very good, but it wasconsidered alright becauseyour master would providefood for you to eat. 10. Rich and poor families In Victorian times, many families had 10 or morechildren. Sadly, many children died as babies, orfrom diseases such as smallpox and diphtheria.Child-death struck rich and poor families. In a Victoriantown, it was easy to tell who was rich and who waspoor. Children from richer homes were well fed, wore warm clothes and had shoes on their feet. They did not work, but went to school or hadlessons at home. 11. Child labour today Although manycountries havelaws that forbidchild labour undera certain age, thereare millions ofchildren all overthe world who areforced to work, especially in Asia,Africa and LatinAmerica. 12. Bonded labour In bonded labour familiesoften sell their children tofactory owners in orderto get money or they givethem to employers if theyowe them money. Thistype of labour is verycommon throughoutsouthern Asia, especiallythe rural parts of Indiaand Pakistan. Suchchildren work up to 18hours a day and often getvery little food. There isseldom a way to escapebonded labour. 13. STOP CHILD LABOUR.. 14. Dangerous jobsHalf the child labourers aroundthe world work in jobs that areconsidered to be dangerous.Among them are*working with dangerouschemicals in factories*working in mines* prostitution* selling drugs*fighting in conflict areas* working on plantations in hotclimates 15. Rights of childrenThe InternationalLabour Organizationhas been fighting childlabour for manydecades . The UnitedNations declared thatchildren must beprotected fromdangerous work. Overthe past years manyagreements , whichprotect the rights ofchildren, have beensigned 16. What needs to be doneEducation is the key to endingchil labour. If children go toschools they are less likely towork. A better education alsomeans a better chance ofgetting a good job later on.Women must get better jobs sothat they can escape povertyand their children dont have towork.Replace child workers withadults .Consumers can help byrefusing to buy products madeby children. Sometimes there isa label on clothes or otheritems that indicate children arenot involved in manufacturingthem. 17. Scavengers inVictorian period A scavengers job was to get under thefactorys machines, and get all the bits offluff that got caught there. Being ascavenger was a hazardous job forchildren because they could easily getcaught under the machinery and die, orget seriously injured. 18. CatchersIn the Victorian Era itwas common to seecheap labor. At thebrick yards, childrenwere used to re-stackbricks. They wouldtoss bricks to eachother in a line to shiftthe piles of bricks toanother side of theyard. 19. Poverty and child labor Child labor and povertyare inevitably boundtogether, and if youcontinue to use thelabor of children as thetreatment for the socialdisease of poverty, youwill have both povertyand child labor to theend of time.- GraceAbbott 20.
