• This map shows areas of high concentration of child poverty (above the London average of 32%).

• Data used to calculate child poverty on a lower super output level (LSOA) is different from the borough level data (shown on the previous slide). Here, child poverty is calculated by the % of children living in families in receipt of child tax credit, who ‘s reported income is less than 60% of the median income, or is in receipt of income support or income based job-seekers allowance, divided by the total number of children in the area (determined by child benefit data).

• Areas shaded in blue are below the London average of child poverty; areas left white are at or below the national average. There are many LSOAs that are below the London and England levels for child poverty.

• There are six (of 103) LSOA where 60% or more children live in families are classed as being in poverty.

• There were 13,180 working age benefit claimants in RBKC in November 2009, of which 3,030 (23%) had dependent children. For a further 2,830 claimants it was unknown if they had children – it could be assumed that some of them have children.

• Dependent children are those aged under 16, together with those aged 16-18 still in full time education, for whom additional benefit is paid.

• A total of 1,720 claimants receive lone parent benefits. This is the main reason for claiming by those with dependent children (total of 57% of all claimants with dependent children).

• 1.4% of all benefit claimants in RBKC claim lone parent benefit: this is lower than the 2.6% in London and the 1.9% in England.
