Children’s Books analysis

The Gruffalo

• The gruffalo is a fairly short paper-back children’s book aimed at children from around the age of 3-6. It is square shaped and consists of 30 pages.

• The methods used for the illustration within the book appear to be hand illustrations, which are fairly detailed.

• The Book’s main text is Serif, and fairly large probaly in order to make it easier for young children to read, as the letters appear more fluidly attached to one another. The title of the book however is san-serif, but this is compensated for with a very large font.

• There are approximately 40-60 words per page.• The Author of the Gruffalo is Julia Donaldson, and she recieves

illustrative aid from Axel Scheffler. The book is published by Macmillan.

Meg and Mog

• Meg and mog is a very basically structured children’s board book, which is of a square shape and is aimed at children from around the age of 2-6. It consists of 30 pages.

• A very basic hand illustration style has been used to illustrate the book. The style used is unique and adopts many black lines to structure characters and their key features. The way which the witch is presented in the illustrations shows the stereotypical which features and attire, which gives children the idea that this is what a witch looks like.

• The book’s main font is san serif, but Is very large and text is consisted of small sentences to make it easy for young children to read. The book also has text which interacts with the environment of the illustrations, such as the text on the staircase in the image below. There Is also some usage of texts to represent sound effects, such as ‘clip clop’ and ‘zzzzzzz’. These techniques where probably used to make reading more interesting for children and help to aid how the children can understand how sounds work.

• There are approximately between 20-30 words per page.• The author of meg and mog is Helen Nicoll, and the illustrator is Jan Pienkowski. It was

published by Puffin.

The Bad-Tempered Ladybird

• The Bad tempered Ladybird is a very short but heavily illustrated children’s book which incorporates the element of time into the book’s structure and it’s ability to help to teach how time works to young children. The book is paper back, and square shaped. It consists of 27 pages (including the pages which aren’t whole pages).

• The illustration consists of a collage shapes style, and was probably done by hand using cutout shapes, but could’ve also been replicated using computer generated graphics. There are clock illustrations on each page to indicate the time of day within each page and help to teach children how to read the time. To add to this, on each of the pages, the sun illustration rises and sets according to the time of day

• The book’s main font is san serif, and isn’t very large. There are also quite a lot of words per page, probably down to the book being aimed at a slightly older audience of children (3-7). There is come usage of sound effects added into some words in the book to accentuate certain sounds which different animals make, for example the snake saying ‘insis-s-s-t’.

• There are approximately between 40-50 words per page.

• The Author of the book is Eric Carle, who also illustrated the book. The book was published by Puffin.
