Dear Parent:

Our school year is well underway and we have enjoyed watching our students quickly adjust to a

new grade level, to new friends, and new teachers.

Camp Storer was a recent experience for our sixth grade students. Students in sixth grade

returned from camp last week with many stories and pictures of the educational and fun-filled

activities that filled their days. Camp Storer provides an opportunity for students to study natural

resources, pollution, cold-blooded creatures and pioneer crafts. Group goal setting and

challenges are part of the program. A very special thank you is extended to the parents (cabin

leaders for the three days at camp) who accompanied our sixth graders.

Reminders. For the safety of children…

Visitors. All visitors to our school on either campus must register at the office. No

visitor (parent or guest) is allowed to by-pass the office and go directly to any part of the

school (Elementary or Middle School). All staff members have been instructed to send

“unauthorized visitors” back to the office. I realize that this may feel harsh if you are a

parent but, as I am sure you understand, our purpose is to provide a safe environment for

your children as well as one that is free from interruption. If your children arrive late,

they need to check in at the clinic (elementary school) or middle school office to get a

tardy slip before going to their classroom.

No Right Turn. If you use the parking lot across the street from the elementary building,

please remember that vehicles may not turn right (north) when they exit this east parking

lot at the crossing light. When drivers forget or are unaware of the posted “No Right

Turn” signs, they end up driving through the crosswalk as students are being crossed.

Pets. I want to remind all families that pets may not be brought onto the school campus.

Children frequently want parents to bring the family dog, especially a new puppy, to

school at dismissal. When they ask, please remind children that it is not allowed.

Slow Down…Way Down. Driving through the parking lot, in the morning or at

dismissal, requires you to be very alert to the possibility of encountering a student or staff

member in your path. You must drive slowly in the parking lots. The

procedures…rules…about safety that we have implemented are for the safety of your

children. We have brought this to the attention of those who have reason to be in our

parking lots through bulletins, newsletters, individual memos, and personal meetings.

Yet, there still are drivers who are not complying and are putting your children at risk.

We have adults in place in the morning and at dismissal who supervise traffic. We

cannot tolerate the presence of drivers who are careless and negligent about speed. We

are prepared to take whatever steps are necessary to keep children safe.

Prayers for Peace. This past week we remembered all who have suffered because of terrorist

attacks. We remember those who gave their lives unselfishly in the service of others. As

Catholics, we draw upon our faith to make this anniversary a time to remember, a time to deepen

our commitment to discipleship, and a time to strengthen our active participation in an effort to

build a more just and peaceful world. Our country has been blessed with tremendous resources

that we must use wisely, both within our borders and around the world. “Blessed are the

peacemakers, for they shall be called children of God.” Matthew 5:9

Together we pray for…

…gifts of civility and charity so that we will treat others with respect and love. …gifts of faith and hope to strengthen our spirits by placing our trust in God rather than in ourselves. …gifts of courage and compassion that will move us into action to help those in need in the United States as well as throughout the world. …gifts of humility and kindness so that we may put the needs and interests of others ahead of our own. …gifts of patience and perseverance to endure the long struggle for justice.

Today’s Special Notices.

Those in Need.

I have spoken with so many families who have shared the gratefulness they feel for having been

spared the destruction of home and family that hurricanes brought to so many, especially those

in Texas and Florida. That sense of blessing is quickly followed by a very real desire to help

those whose lives have been devastated. Children have those same feelings. In today’s envelope

there is a flyer about St. Joseph School, Sylvania reaching out to St. Joseph School, Baytown,

Texas. Baytown is in the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston. The Baytown St. Joseph School

has been identified as a Catholic School in critical need of support. Please help us and our

children reach out to help them.

A second outreach is sponsored by St. Joseph’s St. Vincent de Paul Society. The Society

sponsors an annual food collection for those in need. As a faith formation and education

ministry of St. Joseph Church, we want to answer the call to be of service. Details are included in

the flyer in today’s envelope.

Positive Direction Week 2018. As the year unfolds, information about Positive Direction will

be shared with the entire school and parish community. A tradition for middle school students

for more than 30 years, Positive Direction brings, through the strength of its parent involvement,

a level of education about drugs, alcohol, friendships, and positive choices that supports students

as they enter a time in their lives when independence is emerging, Please be sure to read today’s

flyer.

City Barbecue and PTO. This initiative is a passive fundraiser for our energetic PTO. The

fundraising return on this night out is a remarkable 25%. A flyer with more details is enclosed.

Kroger Plus Card. It has never been easier to enroll and by doing so helping St. Joseph Parish

grow. We need to be even more successful in drawing forth an even greater percentage of the

millions of dollars that Kroger is donating to local organizations. And yes … a flyer with more

details is enclosed!!

Let’s Face It. Please take a few minutes to review the important and inviting information

contained in this flyer. We are eager to hear from you!!

Sounds of the Season. Save the Date. It is not too early to offer your support to this event. For

the 28th

year, St. Joseph Church is proud to host the Toledo Symphony’s TSO Sounds of the

Season Neighborhood Concert. It is scheduled for Wednesday, November 29th

, at 7:30 pm. A

flyer with more information is enclosed.

“We are our brothers’ and sisters’ keepers, wherever they live. We are one human family, whatever our

national, racial, ethnic, economic and ideological differences. Learning to practice the virtue of solidarity

means learning that “loving our neighbor” has global dimensions in an inter-dependent world.”

“A basic Moral test is how our most vulnerable members are faring.”

Positive Direction Week 2018

May 7 – May 11 Positive Direction, a SJS tradition for middle school students for more than thirty years, is a year-long

program that culminates in a week dedicated to special activities (with the support and encouragement

from elementary students). The purpose of the program is to demonstrate to our students, as they

approach their high school years, the importance of setting goals and making positive choices to achieve

these goals. During the year, students will have the opportunity to learn from motivational speakers

who will cover important topics such as respect for self and others, and the dangers to their well-being

from drugs and alcohol. They will also learn about the importance of faith and living a life that is healthy

in mind, body, and spirit.

Positive Direction is a program brought to students by parent volunteers and the Parent-Teacher

Organization (P.T.O.) Over the years, certain aspects of the program such as the t-shirt design

contest, essay contest, Day of Caring, Retreat Day, and of course the 5K Best Foot Forward Challenge

have become important cornerstones. Parent involvement makes it possible to continue all of these

traditions! There are many committees that require varied levels of time commitment to make this

experience memorable for our students. Below is a list of volunteer opportunities. Please consider

getting involved and respond when the requests for help are sent closer to the end of the 2nd quarter

– it is worth the time and effort!

Positive Direction Program Chairs

Kelly O’Brien, Juli Snyder, Amy Giordano

Committees: Run Conditioning/Race Day (K.T. Newsom and Amanda Brzuchalski, Chairs) Retreat Day (Kate Kelly and Juli Snyder, Chairs) Bagel Breakfast (Brenda Hoffman, Chair) Day of Caring/Community Service (Abbey Riley and Jen Britt, Chairs) Spirit/Decorating (Lisa Juette, Kim Gabel Chairs) Carbo Load Dinner (Shelley Piscopo and Heather Moore, Chairs) Speaker Hospitality (Carrie Johnson, Chair) Essay Contest (Cheri Palko, Chair) Fun Friday (Richelle Smith, Chair)

Your help on any of these committees is needed! In addition, we are looking for a Volunteer

Coordinator. Contact us for more information. A formal volunteer commitment form will be

sent home with middle school students in the near future. Thank you for your consideration!
