Coming up on September 10, three Centres have planned local events: Toronto’s CHW Walk to Protect Children, in support of the Therapeutic Centre at CHW Hadassim Children and Youth Village; Vancouver’s Walk in the Park; and Calgary’s Centennial Tea and the launch of their Centennial Book. We will also be publishing a very special Centennial Issue of ORAH. Let’s make this our best year yet! In our Centennial year, we also plan to celebrate CHW’s Birthday by making a difference in the lives of as many women, children, and families as we possibly can. CHW’s visionary leaders established this organization 100 years ago. Since then, we have impacted a broad spectrum of social services in Israel: daycare centres, schools and youth villages, hospitals, women’s centres and hotlines, and programs for the elderly. Thanks to the support and dedication of generations of visionary members, volunteers, and supporters, CHW has invested in people, and changed the world. SHALOM! 100 Years

SUMMER 2017

ORGANIZATIONAL UPDATESFROM NATIONAL

EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR, ALINA IANSON

“Leadership is the capacity to translate vision into reality.” - Warren Bennis

Summer has begun and we are now deep into our Centennial year, gearing up for our celebrations. The highlights of our Centennial Birthday celebrations include the “Celecation” (Celebration-Education-Vacation) Trip to Israel in October and a Gala evening in November. Mark these special events on your calendars and save the dates! The “Celecation” Trip is from October 16-26, and this year’s Gala will be at the Intercontinental Toronto Centre on November 11, followed by the AGM on November 12.

Each Centre has been kicking things up a notch to make sure our Centennial Birthday year is successful. Special care has been taken to make all Annual Campaign events, teas, luncheons, fundraisers, and special events inspiring and entertaining for everyone involved.

Researchers recently found a drug that can help prevent the recurrence of an aggressive form of breast cancer. Hadassah Hospital Oncologist Dr. Amir Sonnenblick and his international team tested the effects of metformin on diabetic women with HER2-positive breast cancer, and found the metformin could actually stop the cancer from recurring.

This particular form of breast cancer is quite aggressive and is more likely to return or spread. The likeliness of recurrence is doubled when the patient is also given insulin, making the cancer that much more aggressive for women with diabetes.

Metformin is an anti-diabetic drug, primarily used to suppress glucose produced in the liver, and previous studies suggest metformin may delay or even prevent the recurrence of breast cancer. The recent study, led by Dr. Sonnenblick, found improved prognosis in patients with HER2-positive or hormone receptor-positive breast cancer where metformin was used.

“We believe that for patients with diabetes and HER2-positive and hormone receptor positive disease, it is reasonable to recommend metformin treatment if patients have not already received treatment and to avoid insulin use as much as possible,” said Dr. Sonnenclick.

The study was published in the May 2017 issue of Journal of Clinical Oncology.

BE A PART OF THE BIG PICTURE!

CHW Toronto Chaverot Chapter Presents: A Centennial Photo Mosaic Project

The Details:On the CHW website, there is an option of uploading either two ($20) or four ($36) photos. Although any photos can be included, the most mosaic-appropriate are portraits and head-shots (cropping is encouraged). The images to the left are perfect examples. And the great thing is that all photographs can be uploaded from your phone, tablet, or computer - it’s that easy!

Once completed, the mosaic will be emailed to everyone, so you can have a copy of this wonderful keepsake. The mosaic will be officially unveiled at the CHW AGM in November, 2017, and proudly displayed in the CHW Head Office.

For more information, call the Toronto Centre at 416-630-8373 or email [email protected].

The CHW Centennial Photo Mosaic Project is the perfect gift for all your loved-ones. Make the amazing women and men in your life part of CHW’s big picture, and share this project with your friends and family to make everyone aware of this wonderful opportunity.
