    INTRODUCTION/BACKGROUND

    A LOVING HOME FOR EVERY CHILD

    While each one of us deserves a fair chance from life, this is not the case when it comes to

    those who dont have that. Each one of us has to live as destiny wants us too. Although life is

    difficult, there are still kind shadows that shelter the gloom of such broken hearts and

    encourage them to forget the havoc played with them. SOS children village is an

    organiation that aims to provide those who lost their home!hood, with a home, goodnurturing and a fair chance to live, grow and become what one aims to be. "t is an umbrella

    which undertakes those who are deprived of their natural parents due to one reason or

    another. #hey aim at providing such hearts a place where they feel as home!like as possible.

    #hey vitally focus on a goal called independence$ they aim at providing such lives all

    possibilities and opportunities to lead independent lives. SOS turns out to be second home for

    those who are abandoned by their parents. As they say its %A loving home for every child.&

    SOS is an international children village currently operating in '() territories throughout the

    globe. "ts head office is in "nnsbruck$ Austria.SOS *inderorf is the worlds largest child

    welfare organiation that has established over '+ pro-ects. "t is also providing care andshelter to around ), children worldwide through its villages and community pro-ects.

    ommunity pro-ects include facilities such as schools, medical centre, and vocational training

    and production centers.

    #he first SOS village was found out in Austria in '/0/ by 1ermann 2menier, today there are

    more than )'+ facilities built by SOS worldwide, where there are ',3+,/'+ people are

    being cared for. Every national unit has its own status and board of directors. #he board of

    directors works on honorary basis. #hey focus on childrens family life, education, health,

    social 4 legal rights, emergency relief and strengthening women.

    Since '/0/, SOS hildren5s 6illages has been committed to children5s needs and concerns

    and focuses on family!based, long!term care of children who can no longer grow up with

    their biological families. SOS hildren 6illages aims at providing orphans with homelike

    love and warmth which entrenches strong moral values in them and makes them capable of

    becoming a productive citien to society. "t provides them with a sense of security and

    confidence to lead a better life. #hese children remain in SOS care until they become

    independent enough to lead their own lives.

    #hrough its family strengthening programmes SOS hildrens 6illages offers various forms

    of support to stabilie families and enable them to self!organie themselves. "n addition to

    this, to ensure the basic right of educationists hildrens 6illages has established

    as long!term support :reconstruction of family houses, family strengthening program,

    community centers and SOS facilities; in "ndia, Sri =anka, "ndonesia and #hailand.

    2007 #he 'th European SOS hildren5s 6illage opens in 6almiera, =atvia. #he

    organisation helps victims of natural disasters in 7olivia, "ndonesia, @eru and

    >ruguay, as well as those displaced in the crisis!torn regions of Sudan, had and

    Somalia. SOS hildren5s 6illages wins the O@E 9und Award for evelopment. "n

    SOS VILLAGE PAKISTAN

    SOS hildren5s 6illages of @akistan is a private social welfare Organiation dedicated to

    provide homes for orphans and abandoned children. SOS hildren5s 6illages of @akistan is

    affiliated with SOS *inderdorf "nternational, which is the umbrella Organiation, with its

    head office in "nnsbruck, Austria, is one '() member associations in different countries,

    many of them being in Asia, Africa and South Africa.

    #he special features of SOS hildren 6illages are that they are not traditional orphanages.

    #hey provide a family!based environment to children where every effort is made to enable

    them to become productive and talented individuals of the society.

    SOS hildren5s 6illages of @akistan is financed through the support of private individuals,

    philanthropists, foundations and the corporate sector. =and for all pro-ects has been donatedby the respective provincial governments but financing, both for the construction of new

    pro-ects and maintenance of the children, is through sponsorship and donations from the

    public.

    All SOS pro-ects in @akistan are being funded through its own initiatives, both for the

    establishment of new pro-ects and running costs. #he ma-ority of SOS pro-ects and running

    costs. #he ma-ority of SOS pro-ects are in the developing world and of these, @akistan is the

    only country, which is self!financing.

    r.Attiya "nayatullah, the wife of @akistan ambassador in Cepal and later on Hinister of

    Social and Womens Affairs in @akistan, took the initiative to establish SOS hildrens6illages in @akistan in '/F3.

    "n the very same year her sister, Hrs Souriya Anwar, was entrusted with the founding of a

    national SOS hildren5s 6illage association of which she is still the president. At the same

    time, the construction of an SOS hildren5s 6illage in =ahore was started which was

    completed in '/FF."n '/+G, the first SOS nited Cations evelopment @rogramme :>C@; came into being in '// in the district

    of *asur, near =ahore. "n )', SOS hildren5s 6illages took over a mother and child clinic

    in @attan in the remote northwest of the country, which had previously been run by the

    government. ue to the deteriorating political situation and security issues in Corth!West9rontier @rovince :CW9@;, this facility was closed in October )F.

    "n October )', an SOS Emergency elief @rogramme was started, following the military

    action in Afghanistan. #he goal of this programme was the establishment of basic educational

    and medical infrastructure for children in the refugee camps.

    "mmediately after the earth8uake in October )3, SOS @akistan started an SOS Emergency

    elief @rogramme. #his programme aimed at delivering relief items to affected people,

    provision of shelter and care for the orphaned and vulnerable children as well as vulnerable

    women and a family reunification programme.

    #he ma-or aim is to respect, promote and stand up for childrens rights.SOS hildrens

    6illage strives to provide a family!oriented environment to the orphaned and abandoned

    children who are deprived of their natural parents. "n addition to this, SOS aims to give these

    children 8uality education, -ob!training, security and care enabling them to become

    contributing members of society. #his facilitates a sense of self!worth and self!confidence in

    these children.

    #he ultimate goal of the organiation is to be able to provide shelter to every deserving child

    in the country. #o achieve this ob-ective, only those children are admitted who are either

    complete orphans or are categoried as Ksocial orphans. Social orphans are the children

    whose mothers have either remarried or suffer from an incurable disease or mental illness.

    #he organiation aims to make the decision makers and the public aware of the problems that

    children face and to take measures that will ensure the well!being of these deprived children

    all around the world.

    SOS C()*+,-'S .)**/,The first SOS village was set up by a German orphan Hermann Gmeiner in 1949 in Austria.

    Himself an orphan his aim was to help the chilren in nee! who have lost their home! family

    SOS hildren5s villages are now found in more than '( countries all over the world and are

    habituating children who have either lost their biological families or are unable to return to

    them.

    #he SOS children5s village model is a care based model which is based on four elementsL

    (/ THE MOTHER: #he SOS mother is an emotional reference point for the children.

    On an average eight to ten children are placed under her care. She lives with thechildren as a family member and does all the domestic chores like cooking, washing

    etc. She is responsible for shaping the family life and forming reliable and stable

    relationship with the children. 7efore living in a SOS village, the mothers are given

    intensive specialist training by the Cational training center :C#; located in =ahore.

    #raining includes on -ob training and attachment with the senior mothers who can

    assist the new ones.

    ((/ BROTHERS AND SISTERS: "n SOS families boys and girls of different ages grow

    up as siblings. 7iological siblings are not separated in SOS families. #he can continue

    to live to gather. hildren of the age of up to ten years are taken into the village. 7ut

    eDceptions are made if there are any biological siblings above the age of ten. #he

    means that larger group of siblings can stay together as a family.

    (((/ THE HOUSE: Each SOS family lives in a house as a family and has all the necessary

    commodities that one can find in a home. #hese include a fridge, #6, dining table,

    bed. Each house usually has three rooms. One for the mother, one for the girls and one

    for the boys. #he very young children usually share the room with the mother. #he

    house also has a kitchen and a lounge. #hese houses are usually donated by different

    companies and are named after them. #he houses are furnished either by the company

    who has sponsored the construction of the houses or are given by the organiation

    itself.

    (/ THE VILLAGE: Each SOS village has ten to fifteen houses in it. "n *arachi SOS

    village there were total of fifteen villages. #hese villages are open spaces and also

    have a large garden and play area, parks$ ponds etc.#he organiation places a strong

    emphasis on the impact of surroundings on the children. #hey also have a great

    concern for the eDtent of the contact and interaction of these children with theneighboring communities. 9amily strengthening programs and other social services

    for families and children in need are an integral part of the activities of SOS

    hildren5s 6illages in @akistan.

    O$( C/,One of the most important phases in the lives of the SOS chilren is when they move from

    villages to youth care facility. $or boys this happens at the age of fourteen! where as the girls

    continue to live in the villages up to the time they get marrie. %sually for any other chilteenage is &ust li'e another common phase of life but for SOS village chilren it is more of a

    strain because they have alreay been through traumatic e(perience of separation from their

    families uring their chilhoo.

    #his is the stage that the young people are given technical training and or merit education so

    that they can involve in their own development and can actively take part in determining how

    SOS children5s villages youth work involve youth houses with supervised living. #hese

    young people are giving training by team of educational specialist who support them in their

    development to be able to be a responsible citien of the society and to earn steady income

    Ha-or attention is paid to the fact that these young people get a good training in their

    respective field so that they are able to get good -ob. "n country like @akistan where the basic

    conditions are inappropriate and where the unemployment rate is considerably high, it

    becomes challenging for young people to get a decent -ob. So the organiation makes surethat the person is competitive to get a -ob on his own.

    #he young children of SOS are provided with the start up help if they want to start their own

    pro-ect. #his assistance is in form of low interest loans and fleDible repayment policy. A

    follow up care is also provided by the organiation. #his form of care is last step towards

    supporting the young people before their complete independence.

    Each of the branches of training is the same length as is the norm for that country, follow the

    same curriculum and offer the same practical eDperience. On completion the youths are

    awarded a state!recognised diploma.

    medical and health facilities. Every year the SOS sends a team of doctors to the

    interiors of Sind and @un-ab to conduct a free medical checkup of the local

    community.

    opportunities to develop their talents at SOS hildren5s 6illages, schools, education

    centres and family strengthening programmes. Women are supported and encouraged

    to organise themselves, eDchange opinions and receive further training. E8ual rights

    for women has two resultsL self!confident, educated women have more healthy

    children, and support them more in their education and in finding their path in life.

    #he current rural support program is situated in *asur district, @un-ab. *asur has been

    identified as an impoverished area, desperately in need of rural uplift and support as a result

    of number of factors includingL continuous flood devastation, unhygienic water supply

    resulting from the disposal of the polluted tannery waste, lack of medical and educational

    facilities, and the generally low income population.

    intervention is re8uired. #he target groups are families and children.

    C%i&'r() i) *+t+stro,%(s#he main focus is the material, mental and psychological care.Where there are floods, earth

    8uakes, fires, cold weather, femine etc, the SOS steps in with humalitarian aid. "t is

    particularly important to SOS hildren5s 6illages that child and their families not only

    receive care in the short term, but that support is also provided on a long term basis.

    SOS Emergency Program for earth quake relief

    SOS hildren5s 6illages was the only organiation authoried by the 2overnment of @akistan

    to care for children orphaned by the earth8uake, and a Hemorandum of >nderstanding, to

    this effect, has been eDecuted. #he orphans admitted to SOS are presently accommodated in

    temporary shelters and efforts are under way to establish pro-ects for the children in their own

    region.

    Flood relief program

    #he flooding in @akistan has created a large humanitarian disaster. According to the >C, '0

    million or + percent of the population was affected. #he >C says the disaster is the largest the

    country has facedL millions of people have been displaced and there has been mass

    devastation to crops. "t is estimated that half a million tonnes of both wheat and sugar may

    have been destroyed by the floods.

    Hrs Souriya Anwar, @resident of SOS hildren5s 6illages @akistan, has saidL )$ortunately

    none of the SOS facilities anywhere in the country are affecte! nor are they are li'ely to bein the future! as they are in safe areas. However! as you are aware large areas of the country

    an millions of people are affecte. "e have offere to the authorities in all regions that we

    will ta'e responsibility for any orphane! abanone or lost chil.)

    #o provide relief for children and their families in affected regions in @akistan, SOS hildren

    worked in tandem with the charities oncerned itiens Society of @akistan :@; and the

    9atima Hemorial 1ospital System. SOS hildren has worked with @ in the past.

    SOS hildren5s 6illages @akistan has offered to take complete responsibility for any children

    who may be orphaned or lost due to the disaster. All organiations, government departmentsand people involved in relief activities have been advised. 9unded by the @romoting

    Associations of SOS hildren5s 6illages "nternational, a comprehensive relief program has

    been launched in @akistan for the supply of food, drugs and tents. #hese have been identified

    as the top priority. >p to this date more than s. ')3 million has been spent with almost s.

    /+ million on food supply, s. ) million on tents and S. F million on drugs.

    C%i&'r() i) *o)-i*t6iolence always have devastating effects on the society. hildren are sub-ected to eDtreme

    situations, which cause unforeseen mental and physical damage. Wars, armed conflicts,

    persecution and displacement remain an unacceptable reality for millions of children.

    SOS Afghan releif program

    #he SOS Afghan elief @rogram for refugees seeking shelter in @akistan was started in

    9ebruary, )) on the re8uest of the European @romoting Associations, who also funded the

    interventions. #he program was ended in )F and the refugees were sent back to their own

    country. #he main focus was on the childrenL their education, health and recreation. 2irl5s

    education was a priority and schools were established in Shamshatu and 7adaber amps.

    7asic 1ealth >nits were also set up in these camps and referrals made to the SOS @ediatric

    Hedical entre established in @eshawar. #his was a state of the art facility which provided a

    high standard of medical care and treated many thousands of critically ill children. hildren

    in the camps had no recreational facilities whatsoever, and playgrounds were opened for them

    in three of the large camps.

    SOURCES AND ALLOCATION FUNDS

    SOURCESSOS village has a worldwide presence and a positive image. SOS hildren5s 6illage, like

    other organiations, needs funds in order to carry out their social activities. #he sources of

    funding are the followingL

    0. orporate donors

    One of the basic sources is the schooling system of SOS in which children of low income

    groups are invited to get 8uality education at lowest of prices. 7ut these funds are not enough

    to run such a huge social system like that of SOS. Horeover, SOS does have people funding

    throughout @akistan. 6oluntary donations from individuals ranging from s. five to many

    hundreds of thousands of rupees support the 9oundation5s activities. #he emphasis is on

    individual social commitment from the masses. ontributions are also made in kind, in the

    form of food, clothing, medicines, animal hides and skins. Hedical supplies and technical

    support are also received from several non!governmental organiations. #he annual donations

    are fairly regular and reliable because they are broad based, not linked to narrow interest

    groups.

    SOS 6illage gets funds from these agencies. #hey approach these agencies as and when

    re8uired and the way of getting approval of funds is that, these donors are provided with

    sufficient details of activities carried out by SOS in a 8uarter. #he main attractive point for

    the international donors is that SOS is performing activities which are beneficial to the

    system in the long run.

    SOS is also very active in attracting corporate funding. #he organiation offers socially

    PLANS FOR E>PANSION

    urrently SOS 6illage is operating in various parts of @akistan. #he head office of SOS

    6illage is situated at Iinnah Avenue in *arachi. When we visited we saw the construction of a

    building which was a new home for accommodation of more children in the premises of the

    village.

    With the rapid escalation of construction cost the establishment of new pro-ects has become

    very difficult, but they continue to plan ambitiously as this work must go on. >ntil they havesufficient pro-ects to cater to all children in support.

    9uture plans for eDpansion and diversification include the inauguration of a brand new

    facilities established in the city, %#he SOS "nfa8 #echnical #raining "nstitute& on Ianuary )F,

    )', which caters to the needs of youth as well as those who reside in the impoverished

    *orangi area. Also two new villages will be opening up in this year.

    "n Iamshoro SOS hildren5s 6illage is under construction and will be soon finished. "n

    "slamabad the construction of the SOS hildren5s 6illage, which will house *ashmiri

    children, is well advanced.

    CO WORKERS TRAINING AND DEVELOPMENT

    NATIONAL TRAINING CENTRE NTC!Aims to ensure uniformity of operation in all SOS pro-ects and to attain the desired level of

    eDcellence. #raining programmes for irectors, Assistant irectors, Supervisors, Hothers,

    #eachers and other staff are organied in the C#. #he Cational #raining enter is the

    essential place for the growing number of pro-ects where co!workers from all over the

    country receive trainings.

    #he Cational #raining enter is handled by the Cational Office whereas the policies and

    programmes of training are worked out with the C# irector. #he C# irector carries full

    responsibility for the Cational #raining enter and organies the trainings.

    Mot%(rsProper training is essential to #o%%"ni#ate to the '%others' hat the SOS

    #on#ept is and the standards to :e %aintained $he& re#eive training at

    the -ational $raining Centre and are atta#hed to 'senior %others' for onnderstanding, to

    this effect, has been eDecuted. #he SOS Emergency @rograme for Earth8uake elief was

    started in response to the disastrous earth8uake which occurred in Aad Iammu and *ashmirand parts of CW9@ in October )3.

    SOS 6illage is thankful to all the donors who make it possible for them to provide the

    children with food, shelter and water. Above all, to give they hope in future. "n return they

    en-oy in sharing the success of their life and knowing that there is nothing more worthwhile

    than touching a human life.

    Similarly, their mission does not end here because they know there is so much more to do and

    more children who need help and reach out to.
