    CHILDS CRADLE

You'll love this old-fashioned cra-dle as much as your ancestors did.The lightly arched canopy protectsa baby's sensitive eyes from harshlight. The convenient treadle barsallow you to rock the cradle withone foot while reading or knitting. In short, it's the perfect way to rockyour child to sleep.

    1. Use the patterns provided to cutthe shapes of the sides (A), head-board (B), and footboard (C) to thedimensions provided. Cut the an-gle ends and bevel edges as shown.2. Cut the handles in the sides, andshape the top edge of each piece asshown.3. Shape the edge of the base (D)to the profile of your choice; thepattern shown is a radius bead. Tominimize splintering, shape theends of the base first, then do the

    sides.

    4. Sand all of the pieces smooth. Adrum sander will be necessary tosand the curve in the sides and thepattern cut in the footboard.5. Assemble the sides to the head-board and footboard with glue andcounterbored #8 x 1-1/2" flatheadwood screws. Transfer the patternto the canopy support (E) stock.

Hold it up to the assembled sides tomark the angles on the ends. Spanthe canopy support between thesides and secure it in place with

glue and screws.6. Attach the base to the bottomedge of the sides, headboard, andfootboard with glue and counterbored screws from underneath.7. Cut the canopy pieces (F, G) tosize. While cutting to width, rip a2 bevel on both edges of the cen-ter pieces and on the inner edge ofeach edge piece so the pieces forman arc as shown.

    8. Starting in the center and work-ing toward the ends, attach thecanopy pieces with brads. When

finished, sand the top for a smooth, rounded contour.
