Rotary Club of Berhampur
Trying to manage diabetes is hard because if you don’t,
there are consequences you’ll have to deal with later
in life.
-Bryan Adams
World Diabetes DayKnow what! Our club’s long term health projectthe Diabetes and hypertension detection camp isbeing conducted uninterruptedly for the last 16
yrs., and is always in the reckoning for such nobleofferings. The people of Berhampur especially theolder and impoverished people have been largelybenefited from this camp.
World Diabetes Day is the primary global
awareness campaign of the diabetes mellitus world
and is held on November 14 of each year. It was
introduced in 1991 by the International Diabetes
Federation and the World Health Organization in
response to the alarming rise of diabetes around the
world. World Diabetes Day is a campaign that features
a new theme chosen by the International Diabetes
Federation each year to address issues facing the
global diabetes community. While the campaigns last
the whole year, the day itself marks the birthday of
Frederick Banting who, along with Charles Best, first
conceived the idea which led to the discovery of insulin
in 1922.
Each year, World Diabetes Day is centred on a theme
related to diabetes. Topics covered have included
diabetes and human rights, diabetes and lifestyle,
diabetes and obesity, diabetes in the disadvantaged
and the vulnerable, diabetes in children and
adolescents and talking about Diabetes
For 2009–2013, the theme is ‘Diabetes Educationand Prevention.’
A 2006 research study in New England Journal of
Medicine had two interesting observations. One, avariation of the TCF7L2 gene is linked topredicaments (blood sugar is high but below diabetes
PROGRAM TODAY : 1) Rotary Foundation Alumni, Dr. Pradeep Mohapatro, Dept. of Journalism & MassComminication, Berhampur University will speak on “ Role of Media in Contemporary Society”. & 2) On theoccasion of national press day on 16th Nov, Felicitation to eminent press personailities of BerhampurPROGRAM NEXT WEEK (23rd NOV 2012) : Speaker Meeting
range) which indicates a higher likelihood of
developing diabetes. Other data showed that
changes in food habits and physical activity could
reduce or stop disease development, even in people
with disease-risk increasing genetic variants.
Every human cell contains a nucleus with
chromosomes, that carry the ‘building block’ of life
(or DNA) arranged in specific groups (or genes), which
are responsible for all our biological characteristics.
Often person-to-person genetic differences result
from gene mutations (or changes) that may either
directly cause disease (e.g. sickle cell anaemia) or
combine with dietary and environmental factors to
increase the probability of disease occurrence (e.g.
diabetes, obesity, heart disease and stroke).
Children too should be screened for
Diabetes is no more an old man’s disease. More and
more children are falling prey to this lifestyle disease
and doctors say it is best to screen children too. The
theme of this year’s World Diabetes Day, was observed
on Wednesday, and is: ‘Protect Our Future’.
Type I diabetes, which is not lifestyle-induced, is more
common among children. Doctors say the issue of
concern, however, is the rising cases of Type II
diabetes, which occurs due to lifestyle disorders.
‘Type I diabetes is when the pancreas doesn’t create
insulin, and that is what mostly affects children.
According to IDF, there are over 61 million patients
of diabetes in India. The Juvenile Diabetes Research
Foundation (JDRF) says there is about a million
children with Type I diabetes in India.’ Our children
are becoming obese. The prevalence of diabetes is
on the increase because of increasing weight and lack
of activity,’
‘50 million diabetics in India’
According to the World Health Organisation (WHO)
estimation, nearly 200 million people all over the world
suffer from diabetes. This estimate is likely to be
doubled by 2030. About 80% of the diabetes deaths
occur in middle-income countries, says WHO.
According to the statistics of the International Diabetes
Federation, there are nearly 50 million diabetics in
India. Also, there is a rise in the complications
associated with diabetes. Doctors say that awareness
among the people should be increased and health and
fitness education should be imparted to reduce the
number of patients in India.
Uncontrolled diabetes can damage the organs and
impair the immune system. People with diabetes have
foot problems which can get serious very fast. Long
standing diabetes increases the risk of developing
complications like diabetic neuropathy and diabetic
foot. According to statistics approximately a quarter
of all people with diabetes worldwide will develop sores
or breaks (ulcers) in the skin of their feet at some
point during their lifetime. Chances of complications
can be minimised with regular foot care.
4 to 21 per cent women 0ut of an estimated 62.4
million diabetics in India suffer from gestational
diabetes mellitus (GDM). GDM, also called glucose
intolerance, is a temporary form of diabetes during
pregnancy in which the body produces inadequate
amounts of insulin to deal with sugar. Obesity or a
history of abortions increases the risk of gestational
diabetes in pregnant women. However, it can be treated
through diet alteration, medications and regular
exercise. If a patient with diabetes plans pregnancy,
it is absolutely important to control blood sugar
throughout the pregnancy.
World Diabetes Day: Have you noticed thesesymptoms?
1. Have you noticed an increase in appetite lately?
This could indicate polychasia caused by body cells
starving for glucose, which isn’t able to move into the
cells in the case of a diabetic.
2. Do you have to visit the loo for urination moreoften these days?
This indicates polyuria caused by high amount of glucose
in the urine.
3. Are you thirsty most of the time?
This could be polydypsia caused by the increase in
urination and loss of fluids.
4. Have you lost a considerable amount of weightlately even after having an increase in appetite?
In diabetes, the body is unable to utilize the available
glucose. For want of fuel, it then starts burning fat
which leads to weight loss.
5. Have you been feeling fatigued all day long lately?
Since the glucose stores aren’t utilized, the body is
unable to get its energy and hence feels more fatigued.
6. Do your feet and fingers feel a tingling or numbsensation?
The high glucose levels in the body can affect the nerves
and this can cause what is called ‘diabetic neuropathy’
causing tingling and numbness in the peripheries of
the body.
7. Have you been suffering from infections morefrequently than earlier?
The reduced nutrition levels in the body’s cells can
decrease the immunity leading to frequent infections
especially in the skin, vagina and urinary bladder.
8. Is your vision appearing blurred these days?
The shape and flexibility of the lens of the eye changes
due to high blood sugar, thus distorting the ability to
focus. This causes blurred vision.
9. Do you have cuts or wounds that have not beenhealing for a long time?
Due to a weakened immune system and increased
predilection for infections, wound healing is poor in
diabetics.
10. Have you been highly irritable and/or depressedlately?
This can be due to the decreased glucose supply and
nutrition to the brain.
If you have noticed any of the above symptoms, it’s
time you visit a doctor soon. Diabetes does not mean
a death sentence – it is a disease one can live with,
provided proper lifestyle changes and treatment as
advised by the doctor are followed.
Pears – a great source of phytonutrients
The pears’ fibre does a lot more than just encourage
healthy digestive functions. Numerous studies show
that it helps reduce cholesterol levels, reduces the risk
of coronary heart disease and even Type II diabetes.
Along with fibre and phytonutrients, they also contain
Laevulose, a natural form of sugar which is a lot
healthier than natural sugars.
USA Pears, grown in Oregon and Washington where
the conditions are conducive for pear growth are now
available in India.
Health benefits of pears
· They reduce cancer risk
· Prevent heart disease
· Doesn’t raise blood sugar levels
· High on fibre content
