A Commitment to excellence and growth.

A Commitment to excellence and growth.

WORLD-CLASS INITIATIVES TO ENSURE A HEALTHIER COMMUNITY.

Chilton Hospital’s reputation for superior, highly personalized care is well-earned.

With aggressive and thoughtful leadership, a commitment to the community and a

dedication to excellence, Chilton stands as a brilliant example of what a true community

hospital can achieve. However, the future awaits – demanding ever more in the name

of progress. With this in mind, our bold strategic plan sets forth ambitious goals that

will secure our standing as a world-class community hospital for years to come.

These forward-looking goals include:

• Converting more than two-thirds of patient rooms into private spaces

• Providing advanced technologies that maximize patient care

• Building ambulatory centers that optimize patient convenience

• Enhancing a dedicated orthopedic center

• Creating an electronic data management system that streamlines, improves and

personalizes patient care

Chilton’s greatest chapter is now being written.

We welcome you to be part of our story.

The Campaign for

“If there is one thing that heartens me as we put our new plans in place, it’s the fact that our supporters so vividly recognize our value to the community.”

Deborah Zastocki, DNP, RN President/CEO, Chilton Hospital

F ocusing on compassion and our patients’ individual needs, Chilton Hospital has

transformed itself into an invaluable community resource. We have become the

destination of choice for patients with wide-ranging conditions, and have distinguished

ourselves with a wealth of programs designed to keep you out of the hospital. Our strong

connection to the community has paid rich dividends: Castle Connolly Medical LTD – an

organization that identifies the country’s best practitioners – recently named Chilton one of

the best institutions of its size in New Jersey.

Accomplishments include our enhanced Emergency Department and Primary Stroke

Center – both ranked among the nation’s best. We now offer a Total Joint Center and

exemplary maternity care. Chilton patients can be assured that they are in caring, skilled

hands equipped with the latest technologies.

The input of the community is important to us and has helped fashion many of our latest

initiatives. As an example, the recommendations of our community advisors have led to

many of our outreach programs that focus on topics such as nutrition, exercise and more.

We are now embarking on investments to further transform the Hospital. We’re turning

more than two-thirds of our inpatient rooms into private spaces, knowing that single-

occupancy speeds healing. We’re targeting cancer and orthopedic issues, which so many

community members are grappling with. And, at new ambulatory facilities in Hewitt and

Wayne, our patients will find comfortable, attractive treatment centers.

If there is one thing that heartens me as we put our new plans in place, it’s the fact that our

supporters so vividly recognize our value to the community. We have become part of your

family, and have already received several sizeable contributions. We’re off to a fantastic

start and couldn’t be more grateful.

Now we need to move past start. With so much momentum – and with so many exceptionally

talented people working at Chilton Hospital – we are beautifully positioned to further

distinguish ourselves. Please join us in preparing Chilton Hospital for an outstanding

future serving our community.

“Chilton patients enjoy the same expertise they’d experience at the fi nest institutions – but here they’re taken care of by doctors, not residents.”

Dov Gorshein, MD, FACPChair of Chilton’s Radiation Oncology Department

Board Certifi ed in Internal Medicine, Hematology, Medical Oncology and Radiation Oncology

A hospital is only as good as its doctors. And at Chilton, attracting the best and

the brightest is an ongoing initiative. Dr. Dov Gorshein, who chairs the Hospital’s

Radiation Oncology Department, is a shining example of our success. Trained at

Harvard Medical School, Dr. Gorshein possesses a rare combination of expertise, experience

and dedication to the community – qualities that complement and advance the Hospital’s

critical mission. While he could have practiced medicine virtually anywhere, he chose

Chilton. “It was the promise of creating my own department that could serve a community

of my neighbors in the best way possible,” he says.

Dr. Gorshein’s reputation has helped Chilton Hospital raise the bar by attracting other

doctors who share his uncompromising standard of excellence and belief in a team

approach – the same approach employed by many prestigious teaching hospitals.

“Treatment doesn’t begin until every professional has voiced his or her point of view,

and we’ve discussed all their perspectives,” Gorshein says.

Zeljka Nigrin knew it was a terrific opportunity. Her husband was being promoted

from a good job in the U.K. to a great one in the U.S. But she was 35 weeks

pregnant and, despite the fact that all her tests were perfect, dozens of local

obstetricians refused to accept her as a patient. Only Dr. John Scian, at Chilton Hospital,

was willing to accept a patient more than 20 weeks along.

Nigrin was thoroughly impressed by Chilton’s Mother Baby Center, which ranks among

the top New Jersey maternity departments in patient satisfaction. She noted the doctors’

outstanding backgrounds, the excellent neo-natal capabilities and the tasteful, private

rooms with pull-out beds for husbands who want to spend the night. Her delivery went very

smoothly – but had there been a need for special medical services for newborns, Nigrin

knew that the staff at Chilton was prepared. She found the nurses extremely supportive,

showing new mothers how to pump milk, for example, and giving them places to store it.

“I got a really nice massage before I left,” she said. She and her husband also enjoyed a

lovely gourmet dinner, complete with a fancy tablecloth and fine china.

Dr. Scian was happy to help the couple. “Working in a small community, you’re connected

to the people you take care of. They’re real people with real needs,” he said. Nigrin was also

delighted. “Dr. Scian was great,” she said. “I can’t thank him enough.”

Chilton’s Mother Baby Center ranks among the top New Jersey maternity departments in patient satisfaction.

Emergency Care: STAT

T he time it takes to respond to emergencies is critical. In many cases, lives depend

on it. Chilton Hospital answers the call with a host of industry-leading emergency

services. The Hospital has been recognized for its unsurpassed emergency stroke

and cardiac care. Also standing by are a dedicated pediatric emergency department and

a fleet of mobile intensive-care units that rush medical specialists to patients needing

immediate life-saving care. In addition, these units are able to transmit patients’ vital

statistics back to the hospital so the appropriate care can be administered upon arrival.

“We make every eff ort to engage people psychologically, emotionally and intellectually. It’s very important to keep the mind active, especially as you age.” Joan Beloff Director, Community Outreach/New Vitality

Even if members of our community never set foot in Chilton Hospital, they may well

be benefi ting from our many activities. Thousands of people each year participate

in our exercise programs, cooking classes and discussions – all aimed at building

community health.

Called New Vitality, this award-winning, dynamic outreach program geared toward adults

fi fty and older has created a true community among its participants. “We engage people

psychologically, emotionally and intellectually,” says Joan Beloff, Director, Community

Outreach/New Vitality. “It’s very important to keep the mind active, especially as you age.”

While many of the programs are held at the Hospital, they are also held at other convenient

locations in the community, including the YMCA, the public library and local restaurants

and businesses. Most of the staff live in the community and therefore have insight into

which programs their neighbors are looking for. There’s also a yearly survey and a senior

advisory board working to develop programming relevant to today’s older adult. “We want

them to embrace healthy living,” says Beloff.

Certainly, New Vitality’s purpose is to promote health, but it also makes a difference when

people become ill. “If they’ve been involved with the Hospital already, they’ve seen how

supportive and caring we are,” Beloff says. “People tell us they feel comfortable coming

here and using the wonderful services we offer.”

Advanced diagnostic and treatment options.

Advanced technology is the hallmark of a world-class hospital. In expert hands, leading-edge

equipment has the power to diagnose, treat, and in many cases – help cure. Chilton Hospital

has long recognized the importance of keeping abreast of the latest technological

breakthroughs – adding the latest proven equipment as soon as possible. Our state-of-the-art MRI

and CT scanning equipment, catheterization lab and linear accelerator are exemplary of our

commitment to offering our community the health care tools they need to live long and healthy lives.

At Chilton we recognize that technology alone cannot win the battle against disease. That’s why we

optimize our imaging technology through a relationship with Montclair Radiology, a leader in the fi eld

of diagnostic imaging. On site at Chilton, distinguished doctors from Montclair Radiology help raise our

care to the highest possible level.

Technology

Th e highest quality care, delivered in a healing environment.

Patients’ comfort and peace of mind are critical to the healing process. That’s why

Chilton is embarking on an initiative to enhance the patient experience that’s at

once therapeutic, practical and aesthetic. Two-thirds of our patient rooms are being

converted to single occupancy. These new rooms allow patients all the luxuries and benefi ts

of a highly personalized environment.

Redecorated and outfi tted with amenities such as fl at-screen TVs, sleeping areas for visitors

and larger closet space, this ‘spa-like’ approach allows for greater privacy and patient

control. Additionally, single patient rooms have been shown to reduce infection, speed

recovery and enhance critical patient care. These new enhancements are based on our

experience and research, as well as suggestions received from our patients, visitors and

hospital staff. Our goal is to raise the level of personalized care while also creating the

most relaxing health care experience possible. At Chilton, we’re adding lifestyle to our

healing style.

Comfort

“I felt like I had the whole Chilton team supporting me.” Marilyn Weinstein

Former Patient and Breast Cancer Survivor

With a family history of breast cancer and a previous lumpectomy, Marilyn

Weinstein had been getting mammograms at Chilton Hospital for 11 years.

It was during a follow-up ultrasound that a radiology technician at the

Comprehensive Breast Center identifi ed a cancerous tumor that could have been

all-too-easily overlooked.

After surgery at Manhattan’s Memorial Sloan Kettering Hospital, Weinstein returned to

Chilton for radiation therapy. “Without Chilton, I would have had to go back and forth to

the Upper East Side fi ve days a week for seven weeks,” says Weinstein. “I feel a

tremendous level of comfort in the Comprehensive Breast Center,” says Weinstein, who

is now cancer-free. She has seen fi rsthand Chilton’s expertise with matters ranging from

prevention, to routine check ups, to breakthrough approaches to diagnosis and treatment.

“I can’t say it was great having cancer, but I felt like I had the whole Chilton team

supporting me.”

Commitment

At the Total Joint Center, we are freeing patients from pain through extensive one-on-one orthopedic care.

More and more people are leading active lifestyles that include sports and

fitness programs. While this is a healthy trend, it can take its toll on joints

and limbs.

Chilton Hospital has witnessed a steady increase in patients requiring orthopedic care,

and we have responded with our new Total Joint Center – a dedicated wing staffed and

designed specifically to address those issues.

Chilton planned the Center to be the best of its kind in the region. Key staff members

hail from nationally-recognized practices (the foot and ankle team also treats professional

football players). Procedures including hip and knee replacements performed at the Center

free patients from recurring pain and return them to their normal, active lifestyles as soon

as possible.

True to the Chilton mission, the Center takes a highly personalized approach with every

patient. Prior to procedures, nurses with special orthopedic training give patients extensive

one-on-one guidance on what they can expect before, during and after the procedure. Also,

patients get extensive help from physical and occupational therapists. Their invaluable tips,

exercises and tools help patients rebuild muscle strength and re-master day-to-day skills.

Patients regain their strength in spacious private rooms equipped with flat-screen TVs,

free Wifi and daybeds visitors can use to spend the night. They enjoy an outdoor patio,

and dining reminiscent of hotel room service. There’s even a special celebratory dessert

for each patient and a guest – Chilton’s gesture of congratulation.

The Campaign for

The Campaign for

Chilton is bringing care closer to the community.

Chilton’s ambulatory centers are the perfect option for those patients who

require only a test or minor procedure. This alternative puts physicians, labs and

imaging capabilities right in our patients’ neighborhoods. Our fi rst facility has

already opened in Hewitt, and we are making plans for a second site in Wayne. Experts on

a wide variety of ailments will be available to provide their insights on testing, diagnosis

and treatment. Our specialists also stand ready to involve family members – discussing

support services, follow-up care and any appropriate lifestyle changes.

Also, we are planning to implement innovative wellness practices at these centers – helping

to ensure our community’s health long into the future. Linked to Chilton’s database, our

new ambulatory centers are being designed from the ground up to provide leading-edge

care, enhanced patient comfort and increased convenience – with greater effi ciencies

of cost. These exciting new facilities will allow us to fulfi ll our mission to bring the best

health care possible directly to our community.

Chilton physicians gain quick access to state-of-the-art knowledge and techniques.

When it comes to providing superior care, accurate and timely information is

key. Whether this information pertains to prescriptions, vital statistics or

procedures, it’s critical that important data be readily accessible by

doctors and other medical personnel involved. Chilton Hospital has embraced new laws

requiring doctors to compile and save patients’ medical records electronically. To that end,

we are building a secure and comprehensive database containing all of our patients’ records.

“The process will reduce error,” said Reza Farhangfar, MD, who is spearheading this Chilton

initiative. “Doctors will only need to enter data once, electronically, so other people will no

longer be copying and deciphering their handwriting,” he explained. “And with patients’

entire medical history in one place, we’ll know our patients even better than we do now.”

Dr. Farhangfar is also compiling best practices for Chilton physicians to use in combating

specific illnesses. His work will provide physicians with instant access to the cutting-edge

research underlying each set of best practices – giving Chilton patients further assurance

that their medical care is absolutely state-of-the-art.

DAVE WASHBURNCHAIRMAN, CAMPAIGN EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE

GAIL WASHBURN, RNC, BSN, MS

“Time is of the essence in treating many conditions, and that in itself makes community hospitals

invaluable,” says Dave Washburn, Campaign Chair. The quality of care is also critical, and on that

score, he believes that Chilton is superb. “The administration and staff are of the highest caliber,

and they’ve effected important changes in areas ranging from the Emergency Department to the

Breast Center.”

The Chief Financial Offi cer of a medical products company, Washburn is married to a

long-standing Chilton nurse, Gail Washburn. Now in the Obstetrics Clinic and utilizing her

Spanish so she can better serve her patients there, Ms. Washburn led the couple to their

leadership role in the Foundation. “We have both been extremely impressed by the Hospital’s

commitment to ongoing improvement,” she explains. “Chilton is bound and determined to bring

our families the full promise of new medical technologies.”
