Presbyters’ Letter – January 2020

At the outset we would like to share our new year greetings andwishes to all the members of Cathedral Parish. Our good Lord theAlmighty has been so gracious and faithful in blessing our past yearand giving us a new year to continue our witness and commitmentto serve the church. God’s extravagant love is in store and we willmake sincere efforts to be worthy of His loving guidance. We hopeand pray that everything will be in its place as we move forwardtogether through every month towards the end of this year.

Starting with Advent on the first of December 2019, each programwas a blessing and we appreciate the enthusiastic participation ofour children and the parents and all the members of our church. Wehave happily welcomed 16 of our children who were confirmed byour beloved Bishop. All the carol services brought glory to Godthrough our participation and support. The camp fire and fellowshipdinner and the singing of Grace Lodge Orchestra blended well andincreased our joy and strengthened our Fellowship. The Christmasand New Year Services attended by the multitude of members, nonmembers and new people gave the Cathedral a time of jubilantcelebrations and colourful appearance. Amidst all celebrations wealso felt that we had a meaningful and solemn worship with peoplefilling the pews well before time with expectations. On the whole wehad an excellent and memorable festive season of gratitude andthanksgiving. All glory to God.

The Cathedral campus invited many visitors every evening whoadmired the splendid lightings and decorations and enjoyed takingphotos with families and friends. We would like to place on recordour sincere appreciation and thanks to the Cathedral Trustees, PCSecretary and Treasurer and the PC members who organisedeverything meticulously and extended their whole hearted supportthroughout.

We could not forget to recognise the outreach programs of Men’sFellowship and Women’s Fellowship during Christmas to the poor

and the needy. They have done it constructively and generouslybringing joy among the villagers and poor children of diocesaninstitutions and congregations. We applaud their efforts in reachingout to the unreachable. We expect all the Fellowship groups to engagethemselves in more outreach activities this year.

CSI Nagalapuram village church construction has begun. Thefoundation stone was laid on 15th December 2019 and theconstruction is in progress. Let us continue to pray and support thisproject. We have also taken up a church construction at Poondi village. Our Bishop will be laying foundation stone for this church on the 26thof January 2020. This is our first outreach project in this new year.We therefore wish and urge you to join this trip to Poondi and extendyour personal and prayerful support to this project.

Our Parish Hall is under restoration and hope to be ready in two weekstime. Kindly bear with the inconvenience if any. New air conditioningfacilities are being provided and will be available for the use of churchmembers soon.

The new subscription cards are now in use. Some members are stillnot using the new cards. Moreover as it has been repeatedlyemphasised, husband and wife need to pay the subscriptionseparately in their own name. Some members are yet to follow thesystem. We urge you to kindly cooperate and pay the subscription inyour name before March 2020. Let the new year bring a lot ofchallenges through which we may draw closer to God and effectivelyserve Him and our Cathedral. The presence of the Lord will go beforeus and guide us through this year.

We look forward to your prayers and cooperation.

YOUTH SECTION

A NEW LIFENita Hopper

Let us praise and thank our Heavenly Father for His grace towards usto enter into the New Year and for all the mercies received from Himduring the past year. God who had been with us will surely be withus in the unknown future as well.

God says in Isaiah 43:18 & 19 - “Remember not the former thingsnor the things of old. Behold I would do a new thing”. God has a newplan to prosper you, give you hope and a future. So do not chooseyour own way but ask God to reveal His plan. He will show His wayand lead you (Psalm 25:4). So never be afraid to entrust an unknownfuture to an all knowing God because His strength will pilot you, Hispower will preserve you, His wisdom will instruct you, His eyes willwatch over you, His ears will hear you, His hands will defend you andHis ways will guide you. So do not give room for worry and anxietiesbut put your trust in God’s power and care. Everyday take time towait in His presence and ask Him to show the way, teach you andlead you in the right path. Then you would have a blessed life.

In the New Year God wants to do many new things in your life. Youhave to put on the new man (2 Cor. 5:17) to have a new life, oldthings should pass away. God wants you to become His child. So youshould confess your sins, get a cleansing by the blood of Jesus andaccept Him as your personal Saviour. Jesus will forgive all your sinsand make you a new person. God will give you a new heart and dwellin it. You will have a loving, caring and a giving heart. You will not

have any bitterness or hold grudge against those who hurt you withtheir words and actions. You would forgive and forget. Be careful ifyour heart is not right with God, devil will attack you. Remember, every word you speak is a picture of what is in your heart and youwould be judged by God. As he thinks in his heart, so is he (Prov.23:7).

God will put a new spirit within you. The Holy Spirit will give youcounsel, wisdom, revelation and boldness. The Spirit is a teacher, guide and comforter. Are you filled with the Spirit of God or are youserving the things of the world? Do not grieve the Holy Spirit. Setaside a time to read the Word of God and pray and listen to the Spirit’svoice to guide you.

You must have a new mind (Jer. 31:33). Your mind should be filledwith His humility and purity. Heart and mind are connected. If yourheart is not right with God, your mind will be attacked by devil. Donot defile your mind and thought. Have the mind of Christ and youcan overcome the devil. When our minds are renewed, we willexperience the joy and peace of God in our lives. So guard your mindfrom everything that pollutes it. When you are alone mind yourthoughts and when with your friends mind your tongue. Do not giveinto selfish thoughts.

God wants you to have new eyes. All the problems in the world startedthrough the lust of the eyes (Gen. 3:6). Devil attracts the eyes andmake them look at unwanted things. So watch what you see. Makea covenant with your eyes. In the modern world there are so manydistractions and attractions around you. Close your eyes and fix themon Jesus. God gave us eyes to admire His creation and give thanks. So turn your eyes from beholding vanity (Psalm 119:37). Use your

eyes to read the Word of God and meditate which will transformyour life. The light of the body is the eye (Mathew 6:22). When yousee someone in need, you can help them.

You must have new ears which should be holy, open and attentivetonthe Word of God and voice of Holy Spirit. Do not listen to gossipand criticism but listen to people who share their problems and needs. You can win more friends with your ears than with your mouth. Whenyou listen to God’s messages, do not forget what was preached butpractice what you hear. Be a hearer and doer of the Word (James1:22). Do not lend your ears to satan. Be a silent listener. God speaksto people through His Word to those who listen.

Pray that God should give you new mouth, tongue and lips becausethe tongue can influence the whole body. So keep it under control(James 3:6). Always speak the truth. Do not quarrel, complain, murmur, gossip, curse or tell lies. Let your mouth be filled with praiseand prayer. Be swift with words of comfort and words of praise andcheer. Speak well of those who speak ill of you. Speak encouragingwords to those who are in distress. Never be hasty but think beforeyou speak. The hardest wounds to heal are those made by thetongue. Polite words open iron gates. Death and life are in the powerof the tongue. Keep your tongue from evil (Psalm 34:13). Let yourspeech be with grace (Col. 4:6). A timely word lessens strife. A lovingword may heal and bless. Tell the world how Jesus saved you and allthe blessings showered on you. A wise person has a disciplinedtongue.

God has given you two wonderful new hands to lift them up andpraise God, to write your testimony and work for Him. Carry yourBible with you. It is God’s love letters and best companion. God

wants you to be a cheerful giver. Give to even your enemies. Whenyou see people in need, do not walk away or harden your heart, butdo what you can to solve the problem. Whatever you do, do it heartilyas to the Lord and not unto man.

This year, you should have new feet. Your feet should take you to thehouse of God, fellowship meetings, retreats, hospitals, jail, slums etc.Do not go to unwanted places which do not please God. Walk closeto God. You will have no room for the devil to come in between.God will preserve you from every evil (Psalm 121:3). Use your feetfor His glory to proclaim the good news.

Each of us have been endowed with talents. They are gifts from God.In this New Year, use them for His glory. Do not bury your talentsand skills but use them for the best of your ability to help people andglorify His Name.

So, live for God, walk with God, serve God and follow God’s plan inthis New Year to live a life worthy of being His child and a role modelfor all who are watching your life.

CHRISTIANITY AND WORLD PEACEC. Manohar Ratna Kumar

Peace is harmony and the absence of hostility. We know, peace isthe absence of conflict or war, a state of mutual harmony betweenpeople or groups especially in personal relations, a state of tranquilityor serenity. In a behavioral sense, peace is a lack of conflict andfreedom from violence between individuals and heterogeneous socialgroups.

Ever since the beginning of mankind, why is it that human beingshave had no peace at all? Let us reason it out to solve this conundrum. Can we not live peacefully together? Is it so hard a thing to do? Wheredoes one find peace? Can a group of people live together peacefully?Does one look for peace or bring about peace? If one sets aside desireand works both scientifically or rationally, can we create peace? Thereare many great organizations in the world like the United Nationsand so on, who work for peace, but still, they could not bring aboutpeace. Many political leaders and religious leaders have talked aboutpeace in the world, like the Pope’s famous message ( Pacem inTerries). We still see that there has been no peace in the world. Thevarious reasons are nationalism, various opposing religions, ideasagainst ideas, ideologies opposing ideologies, divisions of classes, races and so on. Why is the society we live whether, it is Indian,Western, Eastern or American has not given us peace either? Evenpeople who have isolated themselves from society and live inmonasteries, have not had peace? We are responsible for this society, which is corrupt, immoral, violent, divisive, etc. We have created thissociety in which we live, we are the society and the onus falls on us.

The most fundamental question arises in our mind: why do humanbeings who have lived on this earth for thousands of years, who havedone incredible things technologically, who have brought about goodhealth care, the comfort of life, so on, have done most extraordinarythings, could not bring about peace? We have achieved great thingsexternally, but inwardly we are still petty and mean. We are fightingwith each other. If one is not peaceful in oneself inwardly, how canwe expect him to bring about peace externally? We always try tobring about changes externally but inwardly we are perpetually inconflict. We never seem to realize that unless each one of us changesradically, there will be no peace on the earth. To live in peace reflects,no act of egoism, divisiveness or selfishness, I first, and then yousecond, not only for oneself but for a group of people. Conditioningof mind with religion, dogmatism, ideals, concepts have separatedthe mankind. Man has not been able to live without these bondages. To have security outside, one must have inner psychological security, either in the family, in a group, in a community, in a nation and theworld at large. Is there inner security in our relationship with eachother, man and woman, wife and husband? If there is such securityin this, then that security is the beginning of peace. If there is nosecurity in our relationship with each other, that is the beginning ofthe conflict or war.

There is an old saying in our country:

Where there is righteousness in the heart, there is beauty in thecharacter.

Where there is beauty in the character, there is harmony in the home.

Where there is harmony in the home, there is an order in the nation.

Where there is an order in the nation, there is peace in the world.

BIBLICAL/SPIRITUAL PEACE: Many are familiar with the Hebrew word“Shalom” or “Peace. The common western definition of peace is theabsence of conflict or war, but in Hebrew, it meant much more. Truebiblical “Shalom” refers to the inward sense of completeness andwholeness. Inner peace refers to a deliberate state of psychologicalor spiritual calm despite the presence of stress. Peace of mind, serenity, and calmness are a description of a disposition free fromthe effects of stress.

The sermon on the Mount(found in Mathew 5,6,7) is one of the mostdetailed teachings of Jesus Christ recorded in the New Testament. Inthis vital sermon, Jesus Christ laid out the central facets of the wayof life. One of the central themes of the “Sermon on the mount” isChrist’s expectation that His followers be characterized by peace, notviolence or war. We generally feel, lam right but the other is wrong, Iam being dragged into conflict. Jesus showed us there is a specialway of overcoming evil and violence. You have heard that it was said:love your neighbor, hate your enemy. But he went a step above andsaid love your enemy, do good to those who hurt you, returns goodfor evil. Most difficult teaching of Jesus. Our father of the nationMahatma Gandhi practiced “Ahimsa” the nonviolence and gotindependence for our nation.

When Jesus was entering Jerusalem, people thought Jesus is the Kingof Jews their savior, one who has come to save them, but they werethinking in terms of overcoming the Roman Empire. They thought Jesuslike David, the great warrior King in their history. But Jesus doessomething extraordinary. He sends his disciples to get a colt to ride on.

Prophet Zechariah proclaimed, “No more chariots in Ephraim, nomore horses in Jerusalem” for he will do away with them. Thewarrior’s bow shall be broken, when the savior brings peace to thenations. See the prophet was proclaiming that God overcomes eviland violence, killing and wars not by responding in the same way,but by giving up violence, by not trying to dominate, by loving andonly loving in response to your enemy. Love your enemy. He evenaddressed Judas as a friend when he came to betray him with theRoman soldiers.

As promised in John’s gospel, “When I am lifted” on the cross “I willdraw all people to myself” through the way of love. See, notdomination, not power, not force, not violence only love. This is themessage of Jesus. We have a message to absorb into our lives sothat we can become people of gentleness, forgiveness, and love evenour enemy.

The word peace is used around 429 times in the bible, the familiarquotes are:

1Corinthians 14:33, For God, is not the author of confusion but peace,as in all the churches of the saints.

Proverb 16:7, when a man’s ways pleases the Lord, He makes evenhis enemies be at peace with him.

Isaiah9: 6-7, Jesus is mentioned as the prince of peace.

Psalms 119:165, Great peace has those who love your law and nothingcauses them to stumble.

Psalms 37-11, But the meek shall inherit the earth and shallthemselves be in abundance of peace.

Philippians 4:6-7, Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayerand supplication with thanksgiving, let your request be made knownto God and the peace of God which surpasses all understanding, willguard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.

John 16:33, these things I have spoken to you, that in Me you mayhave peace. In the world, you will have tribulation, but be of goodcheer, I have overcome the world.

John 14:27, Peace I leave with you, My peace I give you, not as theworld gives do I give to you. Let not your heart be troubled, neitherlet it be afraid.

Having understood Peace, it is clear, peace is the outcome of LOVEAND COMPASSION, which includes forgiveness and reconciliation. Itis not something verbally or intellectually or accepting a theory, butby a responsible action by each one of us. We are the society, we arethe community we are the rest of mankind. As mentioned above,Jesus has left His peace with us, it is not an object to search, it is Hiswords, His Teachings to practice. Jesus Christ taught peace andnonviolence. Unfortunately, the top ten Christian countries wherethe crime rate is highest indicate Christianity has not led to worldpeace, even among professing Christian nations. Christians are to bepeacemakers, but unfortunately, some are trouble makers. Even inthe place of worship, there is no peace. Individuals who profess thename of Christ, teach and practice things that are directly contraryto what Jesus Christ taught. Jesus’s teachings are hard to practice,we have to take a long journey but at least let us begin the journey. The change and transformation must start from every individual. There should be your accepted change of heart, through the presenceof the Holy Spirit that guides us in the ways of Jesus Christ.

THE UNCHANGING WORDRuth MohandossIts another new year, a new calendar, a new date…. some cynicssay “so what has changed?” there are some who would rather notbe reminded of their birthdays(!) as it meant another year hadpassed! Time keeps ticking along, and depending on what we aredoing in our life, it appears to be rushing past or just moving atsnail’s pace! whatever is your take at this point of time, it cannotbe denied that time gives structure and a point of reference to theevents in our life.Change is the main component of the passage of time. Changecan happen in our physical self, in our circumstances, in our lifestyle. External changes are innumerable. The much talked aboutchange is in the area of communication, spreading of ideas, information, messages, and connecting with others half wayaround the globe being available at our finger tips. The one thing that has not changed, is the only thing that reallymatters, and that is the human being! neither has our naturechanged nor have our needs changed, and the one book that hasanswered many questions, placed many challenges before us andserved as a one stop solution to many of life’s confusions, is theWord of God, the Bible. The Bible has recorded the true, life stories of human beings intheir relationship with God, our Creator. So, we get to read of thedifferent kinds of people, we see different kinds of situations andwhen we ask the Holy Spirit to open our eyes to see the truths inthe Word, we get insights into our own life.

Page 16: chimes Jan 2020 - for webpage...Mrs. Usha Rajendran Mrs. Jebaline Lydda Harrison Mr. Nehemiah Nelson Samuel Lay Eucharistic Assistants Pastorate Committee Rev. G. Lawrence Jebadoss

16

We are humbled by the fact that there are many unknowns aboutour own selves, and many situations and events that impact ourlives that are not in our control. The Word tells us that there is aSovereign God who created us, like the Psalmist says “you createdmy inmost being, you knit me together in my mother’s womb”!The Word gives us a guidance on our relationship with otherpeople around us. Yes, loving your neighbour as yourself is notour first option (!), when it comes to dealing with other people inour life. But surprisingly we would all agree from past experience, that there are many situations where we find that to be the bestoption, and are rewarded with a joy and a sense of upliftment, ofhaving done something worthwhile.Jesus, by choosing to be born in a simple carpenter’s family, andastounding the Teachers of His time, even as a young boy, withHis knowledge of the Scriptures, sets us a benchmark on theirrelevance of social status, in studying, knowing the Word of God.The Word of God is our door to the Kingdom of God and as Jesussays, as recorded in Mathew’s Gospel, 13:44, “the Kingdom ofHeaven is like a treasure hidden in a field, when a man found it hehid it again and then in his joy went and sold all he had and boughtthe field. Or the merchant who found a pearl of great value, and hewent away sold everything he had and bought it”.While the world around us is filled with distractions, offering us agoals that once achieved have no real value, we are blessed to havethe Word, freely available to us with the timeless truths that canmeet our every need if only we took the time to read and be ledinto the truths it holds by the Holy Spirit.Truly a Book for every season, a Book for every reason!
