FROM PASTOR RICK

Here are some updates you will want to know…..

Our Building Committee continues in dialogue with the Architect and others to adapt our construction plans to fulfill our ministry needs and meet our goal of not carrying long-term debt. Those conversations are going very well and are keeping us on task to share detailed plans with the congregation this fall and move us to breaking ground following this coming winter. Your support of the Capital Campaign is a continued blessing and is allowing us to lay a foundation for this ministry for decades to come.

As I write this, we are in a very active phase of mission in the world around us. I have talked to our high school seniors who were in Costa Rica last week and many who were at the Adult Righteous Mission in Pontiac. It is a simple fact - that week was one of the most life changing and impacting times for our teams and their mission partners in our history. Please plan on attending the 10 am service on August 9 to hear the good news and learn about what you helped make possible in fund raisers, flamingo flocking and prayer.

By the time you read this, Pastor Kyle Bucholz will already be serving here as our associate pastor and Rev. Hal Weemhoff will be on our staff leading our adult education and spiritual formation ministry. Please seek them out, welcome them and keep them in prayer as God works through them to bless us all.

This spring and early summer I have been writing a curriculum that I am excited to share with our congregation. (In October, we will study and discuss this work and I will be preaching on the theme of Connection.) At the end of the day, the most important work we do is to make connection with each other that blesses life. I believe this four week study will make a difference in the relationships of your life and our church. It will also be the foundation for our primary focus in ministry as a congregation.

This is a very active time for the church. Keep it in prayer, join us in worship as often as you can, continue your financial support so we will be able to serve this summer and enter the fall blessed and fully equipped to accomplish the ministry Christ has set before us. Have a great summer! Pastor Rick

Welcome! All will have an opportunity to meet Pastor Kyle Bucholz (who will be taking Amy’s place as Associate Pastor) and his wife Lauren along with Rev. Dr. Hal Weemhoff (who will be taking Christine’s place as Minister of Adult

Education) and his wife Chris on Sunday, July 12, 2015 at a punch reception after the 8:30 am and 10:00 am services.

Second opportunity to welcome Pastor Kyle! The Staff Parish Relations Committee would like to extend a warm welcome to Pastor Kyle Bucholz and his wife in September also. Please join us for “Worship, Welcome, Picnic & Pounding” Sunday, September 13th. We will welcome Kyle and his wife immediately following the 11:00 am worship services. Come one, come all! We are thrilled to have Kyle on the staff and ask that you pray for the Bucholz family as they transition to their new home, community and church. Kyle is married to Lauren, who is a candidate to become a United Methodist Deacon. What is a pounding? A pounding is an old fashioned practice celebrated when a new pastor is welcomed to the church. Traditionally, a pounding would provide a pastor and family with a pound of staples, such as a pound of flour, sugar, canned goods, cleaning supplies, paper products, non-perishable items, or gift cards. Be creative! Please bring your item on or before September 13th. Below, please find some information on the family and their interests: Food/snack favorites Kyle- Michigan black cherries, donuts, cookies Lauren- crunchy apples (honey crisp, gala), Cheetos, original hummus Hobbies Kyle-sports (golf, football, baseball, basketball), writing, theatre Lauren-outdoors, gardening, music, reading biographies Favorite color Kyle-blue Lauren-green and yellow

FAMILY MINISTRY - CHILDREN

Thank you to all VBS Volunteers. We had an amazing week at VBS—hosting 200 children! Thank you to the +100 volunteers who gave their time and talents to the children. God’s presence was certainly in this place.

Summer Sunday School continues at 10am. A one-room Summer Sunday School class continues at the 10am hour for 3-year olds through 2nd graders. All other children attend worship where they are challenged weekly with written questions about the service. A nursery for infants-2 year olds is provided at all summer worship services.

Summer Sunday school teachers are still needed. Contact Annette if you can help team teach at the 10am hour-- [email protected].

Family Mission Trip---Join us July 24th-26th to serve together on our 4th Annual Family Mission Trip in the Byron area, and camp at Myers Lake Campground. We arrive Friday night and enjoy some s’mores together. We will work at the camp and in the community all day

Saturday and worship together on Sunday morning at the camp. The cost is $135 per family which includes camp site fees, food, snacks and materials for work. Registration forms are due ASAP and can be found on our website. Sunday School Volunteers are needed for 2015-16. If you would like to team teach a children’s Sunday school class (3-4 year olds, Kdg.-1st, 2nd-3rd, and/or 4th-6th grades) at 9 or 11:00am next year, please contact Annette at [email protected]. Each teacher “team teaches” with at least 1-2 other people. Each team divides the teaching Sundays up between them according to what works best with their schedules. In doing so, each team member teaches just a portion of the Sundays and is able to attend worship service the other Sundays so that everyone is spiritually fed! Children’s Ministry Volunteer Orientation is Tuesday, August 25 at 7pm in Fellowship Hall. If you are helping teach Sunday school this year, assist in the nursery, float, or sub, please attend this brief meeting to collect your teaching materials, fill out forms, receive the annual Sunday school calendar, and enjoy some dessert with your fellow teachers.

Lay Leader Reflections

Our Father’s House Who is this Jesus? Why do I humble myself to follow the ultimate Healer and the centuries of Christians who have so done? What are the outcomes of following Jesus? Perhaps I

should follow my own moral compass.

Reams and tomes have been written on these questions; brief answers hardly suffice.

By way of illustration I offer an example of the Adult Righteous Mission story that continues to unfold over the years. The foresight and compassion of its visionaries and leaders led us this June to HOPE Warming Center, a homeless shelter in Pontiac.

The Holy Spirit’s touch transformed us into Jesus’ vessels, conduits of his love, working alongside new friends at HOPE who also have a heart for giving. Stories shared were heart-‐ rending and painful, some were heart-‐warming; there were discussions of questioning about God, of believing in God, of doubting and commitment.

Washed in His love, volunteers used their gifts to serve wherever called. While the visible outcomes of the week are many – a shed, carpeting, painting, a shelter, beautification of the site with hundreds of plants – and are great cause for celebration, I believe the greatest and most profound outcome is the deep and lasting transformation that is happening in the souls of those who served and those they touched. Going about our Father’s work brings joy to Him and us. God beams in delight as he sees how his children from different worlds, different cultures, can laugh, pray and work as one. His purpose for us is to have a clear sense of Jesus’ identity of healing and justice and to act upon that. He calls us to an enduring love and a deep compassion for those with whom many of us are unfamiliar, and, yes, uncomfortable.

Our life in Christ is not just for our lifetime, however, but forever – it transcends generations and millennia. Long ago Jesus said to his parents who found him in the Temple as a 12-‐ year-‐old -‐ “did you not know I had to be in my Father’s house?” (Luke 2:49b). So we, too, need to be in and of our Father’s house – listening, learning, loving, healing, forgiving, serving.

Committing to Jesus, who is the Way, the Truth and the Life, determines how we live, which is in sharp contrast to living for today by our own wits. His way brings us through our Father’s house, a holy path for eternity.

COMMUNITY OUTREACH UPDATE

Local, Regional, and International

At Clarkston UMC we focus on Transformational Mission locally, regionally, and

internationally. June 16th was a perfect example!

Local: On June 16th we offered the fourth class of a sixteen week series called

Getting Ahead in a Just Gettin’ By World. This is a companion piece to Bridges

Out of Poverty. It is curriculum specifically for individuals living in poverty.

Through this class we have the pleasure of learning from, and with, 10 individuals

living in poverty in Clarkston.

Regional: June 16th was the third day of a week-long adult mission trip to the

Hope Warming Center in Pontiac, MI. Approximately one hundred and forty

church members spent the day learning about the struggles of those who are

homeless in Pontiac while working hard to make the shelter more inviting for its

residents. Relationships were formed between the Clarkston UMC church

members and the guests at Hope. We look forward to seeing where those

relationships will lead us.

International: June 16th was the fourth day of a week-long international mission trip to Costa Rica. Twelve Clarkston UMC, graduated seniors and adult chaperones were on a life-changing trip to learn about what others experience around the world. While in Costa Rica they led VBS programming, built a school, and delivered food. What a blessing it is to be a part of such a mission focused church! If you are looking for ways to analyze your summer mission trip experience you may want to consider joining on upcoming Bridges Out of Poverty class. Here are the class dates for 2015/2016:

September 7th- October 12th 7:00-8:30 p.m. November 3rd – December 8th 10:00 – 11:30 a.m.

February 2nd 2016- March 15th 2016 7:00-8:30 p.m.

Our schedules change at church and at home, but the Food Pantry continues as usual. We still restock the shelves with your generous food donations every week, and our clients still come every fourth Monday of the month to receive needed food. We have the most recipients yet with 30 families, predominately from Clarkston, being served in June. So we would greatly appreciate your continued donations as the need actually increases with the kids home from school. So think summer, like barbeque sauce, fruit cups, applesauce cups and pop tarts. Also, for now you can forget about sending tuna, chicken, their helpers and beef stew. We received a lot from VBS so we are set there. Thank you so much for that and all that you do for CUMC and our community. You all are making a difference in families lives!

Adult Righteous Mission—2015 Hope Warming Station in Pontiac, MI. This year, CUMC, Lowe's team members, Hope Guests and Staff, and folks from the neighborhood, all worked together to make an important corner of the world a better place to live, learn, and grow.

A vacant lot, became a park.

No place to sit in the rain, became a pavilion to gather and build friendships.

Signs of hope and inspiration now adorn walls.

Our teachers taught, and we learned, in God's plan, it is never too late to ask for His Help.

Safer stairs, newly carpeted steps, and rooms newly painted.

And 65 beds reinforced for more comfortable rest.

Green everywhere!! Where once was gravel.

A fence for safety, and a privacy fence added to the project, to be a good neighbor.

A shed for storage, and a dumpster surround, again, to be a good neighbor.

Tools, trucks and trailers; supplies and materials; all arriving on time.

And God's Army travels on a good meal. There were many!

In total, 120 leaders, caring and kind, came together one wonderful week in June.

It was a special week. The kind of week, you hope will happen. Amen

THANK YOU

The 2015 ARM Team thanks you for all your support! The week was unbelievable, projects completed, weather was perfect and most important spiritually transformational for the HOPE guests and those who served. You made it possible and have made a huge impact on the lives of those at HOPE Hospitality and Warming Center in Pontiac. We thank you for your generosity and commitment.

This year the theme of our daily devotionals was "HOPE". Our heart batteries were well recharged with close blessed connections made with the HOPE community. By your works you truly showed your faith and God's love. We have all grown as individuals from that week with many new stories to share. In return, because of you, we will hear those stories of a kind and generous people who were willing to give of themselves. Blessed by your kindness we THANK YOU, dear brothers and sisters. -Adult Righteous Mission Coordinating Team

UMW wishes to thank all who purchased flowers and plants from Wojo’s Greenhouse in Ortonville.

Dear Friends, I am so grateful to all who worked so hard on the lovely brunch reception – Michele Poirier and all those who helped, Jane Rodewald for the beautiful invitations to special guests, Helen Phillips for addressing them, and members of the Staff Parish Relations Committee for all their work in coordinating the party! Thank you for the financial gift, I hope to use it on my dream trip to Paris. I truly felt honored and well appreciated! It has been a joy to serve here as Minister of Adult Education. To hear your stories, to witness the “aha moments”, to hear people own their faith and claim their voices. It has been a joy to see the Adult Education program grow into so many classes and variety of studies offered. It has been a joy to see people grow in their faith, their leadership skills, and then find their niche in one of the ministry areas! It has been a joy to serve here as a member of this staff, and to be with you. Thank you for being such a wonderful, nurturing, encouraging community, not only for me and my call, but for your influence on those who are just hearing God’s call on their lives. I look forward to returning to the Chancel Choir in the fall and finding new ways to serve God as I continue to participate in the life and mission of Clarkston United Methodist Church! Thank you again for all your kindness, encouragement, support and love. You are the best! Love, Christine

Thank you to the members of the kitchen committee for the delicious food. Thank you for the financial gift which will help us purchase some new furniture for our house. I will cherish the candle and devotional book and the new robe, as I use them in my new ministry. I love the pillow with the church painted on it, and thank you for the gift cards and gifts for Mike and the kids. All items will remind us of your love and faithfulness. We have been truly blessed! -Pastor Amy, Mike, Allison and Ben UMW’s 20th Annual Rummage Sale on May 30th was a huge success! The rummage sale made over $5200 that will be used within and outside the church to fund various mission projects. We couldn't have done it without all the volunteers. Thank you so much to all who donated their unwanted goodies.

Aug 9th, 2015 (Sunday) - CUMC 10th Annual FUN CAR SHOW The CUMC Men will host our 10th Annual CUMC Fun Car Show on Sunday August 9th from 8:00am to 11:00am in the Fellowship Hall parking lot area (1 week before the Woodward Dream Cruise). The Fun Car Show is open to all cars that put a smile on your face and a spark in your heart. Registration will begin at 7:30am and we would like to have all cars in place by 8:00am so that people attending the 8:30am worship service can see them and vote for their favorite. As this is a fellowship event we ask that anyone having a friend or family member with a Fun Car ask them to participate and attend this years Fun Car event. In the past we had some beautiful cars, even cars that were boats. Each entry will receive a dash plaque and trophies will be awarded for the 'Pastor's pick' and 'Congregational pick'. Award selection will take place between services. A $10 donation is requested for each vehicle entered. Help bring some new people and new cars to the Church this year. For more information or to pre-register contact Arsey Miller at 248 613-0213 or [email protected]. We look forward to a full parking lot of fun, classic, muscle, exotic and any other type of car this year!

Isn't it crazy how fast time flies? I love all the seasons, but summer is the best because things slow down a little bit and we are able to enjoy relationships. Whether it’s summer vacations, family BBQs or pool parties, summer oftentimes means a lot of fun. I know my family is going to enjoy this summer. Even though things are a little more relaxed, our faith is something that never should go on vacation. It’s important that you stay dialed in to the ministry of the local church. That’s why I want to encourage you to stay engaged in generosity through online giving. I wanted to let you know about an opportunity that can help you and your spiritual growth during the summer months. It's called online giving. This summer we are challenging our church family to make some decisions to remain faithful in giving during the summer. Though everything slows down a little during these months, we are praying our giving will speed up. We want to be prepared financially for the fall, where we will reach a lot of people connecting them to each other and to Christ. Would you be willing to set up an online giving profile at clarkstonumc.org and automate the important? Not only will you have to bring a checkbook to church, you’ll help us maintain ministries for your family during all seasons of the year.
