Vacation Bible School 2016

June 20-24 9am to Noon

Registration begins on Sunday, May 8th at the Crossroads after each worship service. If your child has completed 4-year old preschool, or Kindergarten-5th grade, register him/her for VBS. The cost is $15/child and a case of water. Registration ends on June5th. We Are Collecting VBS Donations: Cases of water (small bottles), pre-packaged Rice Krispie Treats, granola bars, cheese sticks, Oyster crackers, Gummi Worms, mini marshmallows, cases of individually wrapped bags of pretzels, Froot Loops, Cheerios, Kix, Chex cereal, bananas, clementines, grapes, apples and carrots. You may drop off donations in the main office or the basket in the Sunday school hallway. VBS Volunteers Needed: If you would like to help with VBS, please take a volunteer form from the Sunday school bulletin board, complete, and return to Shannon Majiros or Hallie Guzal ASAP. VBS Volunteer Orientation is Saturday, June 11th from 9-10am. If you are helping with VBS, please mark your calendars for this important informational meeting. A light breakfast will be provided.

A PASTORAL WORD May 2016

The merry month of May is upon us. In these coming 31 days of celebration and impact, the month of May promises to be one to experience and remember. We will begin on May 1 with recognition of our confirmation class that will move us to a special church conference to take our final vote authorizing construction. All members of the church are invited to share in this historic day and be part of the conversation and decision. The rest of the month will feature a Sunday morning conversation on the identity and mission that God has given to us at this time in our history. We will celebrate Mothers and High School graduates. Mission plans for the summer and Vacation Bible school are being finalized. It is a season of celebrating warmth and sun. It is a time of preparation for the summer to come. At a recent visit to my parents, my father showed me the ground he had tilled for planting in anticipation of the growing season to come. At 90, he is still tilling and expecting a harvest. I drove home and realized so am I. Don’t miss the month of May in your church family. It will be a rich time of blessing. Come and share with us in the merry month of May. In Christ, Pastor Rick

Worship May will be an exciting month in worship! We will welcome our 2016 confirmation class, honor those who mother & mentor, celebrate our high school graduates & pentecost, gear up for mission, baptize and practice Biblical hospitality through holy communion. Come and be a part of all that is happening in the exciting month of May! Family Worship-May 22 at 11 a.m. On Sunday, May 22nd, at the 11 a.m. service we will experience our next ALL FAMILY WORSHIP—theme will be camping. This service will be a 45 minute service for KIDS of all ages. This family friendly service will be active, engaging, and most of all FUN! Bring your whole family and check it out!

FAMILY MINISTRY - CHILDREN May Sunday School and Angels schedule- There will not be Sunday School May 11 @11am, join us at the family service. May 29th(Memorial Day Weekend) we welcome you to attend service as a family. Angels in Training – Our last day of the 2015-2016 year will be May 22nd with a party to celebrate all of their accomplishments.

Camp Day, May 22nd- Jon Lawrence from Myers Lake UMC Campground will be in Children’s Church to share his passion for United Methodist summer camping experiences. Bonfire and Smore’s_ Join us Friday May 20th at 7pm to enjoy a sweet treat and fellowship around the campfire. Invite friends and neighbors to join you, the more the merrier! Bring a folding chair or blanket.

Family Mission Trip- Mark your calendar for July 29-31 as we will serve together on our 5th Annual Family Mission Trip in the Byron area, and camp at Myers Lake Campground. We will arrive Friday night after dinner and set up our camp site. We will work at the Methodist camp ground itself, as well as the surrounding Byron area. The cost is $135 per family which includes camp site fees, all food, drinks, snacks and materials for work projects. A $85 deposit is due by May 22nd, and the final $50 payment is due by June 19th. Looking ahead . . . Summer Sunday school teachers are needed. If you are able to help teach Sunday school at our second service this summer beginning June 19th please contact Shannon Majiros [email protected]

VBS Registration begins May 8th! VBS is June 20-24th. Cost is $15/child and a case of water (which we will donate to Flint). Registration will be at the crossroads on Sundays and in the main office throughout the week--through June 5th.

VBS Volunteers- If you are interested in volunteering your time and energy to support this awesome ministry of the church we would love to have you!! The week of June 20-June 24th 9:00-noon, we have an opportunity for you in a variety of areas: crafts, classrooms, games and skits. FAMILY MINISTRY - FUEL Youth Breakfast Club continues for 7- 12th graders in the youth lounge on Sundays at 9 & 11am. Come hang out with friends and enjoy breakfast while you watch the sermon on the TV and have a discussion afterwards. ALL FUEL LOCK MAY 20-21ST An all FUEL lock-in will be held on May 20th to the 21st which will tie in with our family s-more night bonfire on May 20th at 7pm. We will have food, games, movies and for the 8th graders a visit from a high school youth to share the next steps in their faith journey including confirmation and experiences in high school youth group. FUEL SUMMER MISSION TRIP, JUNE 26-JUNE 30 FUEL Summer Mission Trip 2016 will begin by traveling to Redford, Michigan to work at the Aldersgate/Brightmoor Initiative. Our Middle school youth will paint boards for abandoned homes, work with children of the area in the Superhero’s Academy, assist with Garden work, team building games as well as work in the Free Store. We will end the week by assisting Adult Righteous Mission at the Hope Warming Center in Pontiac, MI. Youth will begin with an overnight Sunday evening at the Aldersgate Church and continue the week with daily mission trips. Participants can attend all week or chose the days they are able to attend. Cost for the week is $75. Commitment and ½ payment due May 22. Final Payment due June 12th.

Costa Rica Did you know that 10 High School Seniors and 4 Adults are planning a mission trip to Rice and Beans Ministry in Costa Rica? They will be serving June 18-25, 2016. These youth, who have been active in our church’s youth ministry and mission, will spend a week distributing food, doing construction work, working with kids, and gaining an understanding of poverty and transformational ministry. Missions Updates PET Update : Wednesday, May 11, we will be carpooling to Ed Noll's workshop near Hadley to fabricate and assemble parts for the PET vehicles. Hope Hospitality and Warming Center Pontiac, Michigan It is with great joy, your ARM Coordinating Team announces that we will again be serving at the Hope Hospitality and Warming Center in Pontiac. Remember, ARM is a schedule friendly mission opportunity where you can work one to five days! Also, we are looking for more Team Leaders to help develop the work plans for a wide array of projects, including: Installing fence, updating bathrooms, building a second pavilion, cooking, gardening, landscaping, painting, organizing & cleaning, praying, teaching, and Connecting People to God. There is a role for everyone who would like to participate! And, back by popular demand, Kid's Camp, set for Wednesday, June 29th, so CUMC parents of young children can participate as well. THE NORTHWEST DETROIT FLOOD RECOVERY PROJECT On August 11, 2014, record rains of 6 inches caused $1.1 billion in damage to 130,000 homeowners and businesses in the tri-county areas in and around Detroit. Basements were flooded, motorists were stranded and building foundations caved in. More than 80 percent of people did not have flood or sewer backup insurance. It was designated a federal disaster in late September 2014. Partnered with UMCOR, progress is being made. There is still great need for volunteer help! Clarkston UMC will take a team of 6 or more to work on projects (not mucking out) from 9am – 3pm, Saturday, May 14. This team will leave the church at 8am for a designated site on the northwest side of Detroit. We welcome anyone who is willing to serve! Sign up on the Missions Bulletin Board by May 8.


SPRC UPDATES

Staff Pastor Relations Committee (SPRC) would like to introduce Shannon Majiros and Hallie Guzal as the newest staff members. Both Shannon and Hallie will be working in the Family Ministries program area.

Shannon is the Coordinator of Children’s Education; managing Sunday School and children’s educational programming. Shannon and her husband Nathan have been married over 16 years and they have two girls, Delaney and Emily. She has lived in Michigan for almost 6 years, and has attended CUMC since they moved here. Shannon grew up in upstate New York, attended college in Virginia receiving a Bachelors in Family and Child Development from Virginia Tech and later a Master’s in Library Science from Wayne State. She has taught Sunday school and helped with Angels in Training. In their free time Shannon and her family love to be out on their boat and travel.

Hallie is the Coordinator of Family Ministries; managing fellowship, and family strengthening ministries outside of the normal Sunday School program. Hallie is a life-long Methodist. She has been an active member of CUMC for many years, including volunteering as a Sunday school teacher, nursery helper and Angel In Training coordinator to name a few. Hallie and her husband Ryan have been married for 17 years and have three children Owen, Ben and Ella. Her family has a love of this church and programs; and is so excited to assist in the growth of CUMC’s family ministry. Her family loves to cheer on the Spartans of MSU and during the summer months, enjoys concerts at DTE and winter months skiing at Pine Knob, both right in their backyard!

Both Shannon and Hallie bring a wealth of experience, education and most importantly passion to continuing Clarkston United Methodist Church’s mission of Connecting People to People and People to God.

Music A very special thank you to Bob and Gail Curtiss for helping connect us with the Ford Motor Company Chorus. On April 17th, we hosted a benefit concert for our H.S. Senior’s Costa Rica mission trip that was very successful. We raised enough money to purchase 147 canvas bags that will be filled with food staples. These bags will be hand delivered door to door in financially challenged areas by our H.S. Seniors. The seniors will give people this gift and offer prayers. Thank you to all who organized, listened, donated, brought refreshments, and participated through singing. We hope you were blessed! BELL CHOIRS All three of our wonderful bell choirs have finished up for the spring and are to be warmly congratulated! The Angelus Bells (elementary), Celebration Ringers (Youth), and Jubilation Ringes (adults) had a fabulous year of improving their musicianship and making worship very special through their beautiful music. Congratulations to Judy Mellen who directed all three groups and to all the musicians for a wonderful year. We look forward to hearing the beautiful sound of the bells again in the fall! YOUTH CHOIR The youth choir is finishing out their spring with a special trip to sing for the residents living in two local care facilities. On Saturday, May 7th the choir will sing at Inn On Cass Lake in Waterford and then travel back to Clarkston to sing at Autumn Ridge. The choir will perform a repertoire that they have been working on since September of last fall as well as some fun skits and finally a sing along with the audience. Congratulations to the Youth Choir on a very successful year of making music for God and God’s people. We look forward to

seeing what exciting things next year will bring for the Youth Choir.

UMW Circles – Following is information on the UMW Circles for their May meetings.

The May meeting of Alethea Rose will be held on Wednesday, May 18th at the Independence Oaks County Park on Sashabaw Road. We will meet at 6 pm at the Twin Chimney Pavilion for a salad and dessert potluck. Following that there will be the opportunity to hike around the lake. Please bring a salad or dessert to share and a drink for yourself. Table service will be provided. Come and meet new and old friends while enjoying God's great outdoors. ADULT EDUCATION

During the month of May, I invite you to consider three options for your spiritual growth for June, July and August. Labyrinth A spiritual prayer tool The labyrinth is a metaphor for our spiritual journey. Life takes twist and turns, and unlike a maze we think there are dead ends; however, through prayer there is always a way forward with God. The walk is all about inviting God into your life, letting go with God, experiencing illumination that leads to union with God. We will meet at the McLaren Garden of Healing. Monthly morning and evening classes at 7 am and 8 pm, as well as the opportunity to walk the labyrinth on your own at anytime. Guidelines for your labyrinth experience will be available on the Adult Education bulletin board outside the church office as well as sign up sheets for these 1 time class times. Questions that you have about life, the church, your faith. Noon, Tuesday, June, 7, July 12, and August 9, I would invite you to come to church with your brown bag lunch along with your life questions. Questions that you just have not had the opportunity to ask a pastor. When we do this kind of thing with youth we call it “stump the pastor.” This will be informal and I hope a helpful and enjoyable way of learning together.

Hunger of the Heart—a spiritual growth opportunity. 6:30 pm on Thursday, June 9, July 14, and August 11. The author of this wonderful Upper Room Book asks the reader to consider questions like: “Do you feel that there should be something more to life than what you’re experiencing?” “Do you wonder what you can do to make your relationship with God more satisfying?” I am excited about this class and hope to have you sign up for this three part course. You can pick the book up for free in the church office starting June 1st.

Last call for the Wesley Heritage Trip to England with Rev. Hal Weemhoff November 8-16. The trip will take us to Birmingham, Coventry, Epworth, Stratford, Oxford, Bristol, Bath, The Cotswolds, Glouster, and the highlights of Wesley’s London. LAY LEADER REFLECTIONS May 2016 “the connection”

The United Methodist Church is active worldwide as “the connection.” In the 18th century John Wesley, our founder, began an organized system for communication and accountability so that the vision of mission and ministry could be accomplished. That organization, our United Methodist denomination, continues today under a connectional structure that is detailed in the UMC Book of Discipline. The General Conference is the primary legislative body that meets quadrennially and consists of five U.S. Jurisdictional Conferences which have about a dozen annual conferences each, and seven Central Conferences located in Africa, Europe, Asia, and the Philippines. Michigan’s two conferences, the Detroit Annual Conference (DAC) and the West Michigan Conference are in the process of combining into the Michigan Conference. The DAC has 6 districts with CUMC being one of 75 churches within the Crossroads District. The General Conference is of critical importance as its 864 international delegates, half clergy and half laity, struggle with decisions concerning today’s issues in setting official policy in concert with God’s word and in updating the Book of Discipline. The totally exciting part of all this is that Deacon Laura Speiran is honored to be an alternate delegate this year. She is the first deacon delegate from our conference to attend! This is an opportunity to observe the proceedings as well as to bring awareness to the Deacon role in the church, which she likens to a bridge between the church and those outside. Her delegate duty is to educate herself and attend meetings in preparation for the issues under discussion. Moral, social, economic and public policy issues include hot-topics of homosexual inclusion and gun violence. Obviously, different regions and countries have different views. The challenges are immense! Her additional work as a delegate to our Jurisdictional Conference in July (where four new bishops will be elected) and as Chair of the Order of Deacons is a valuable asset. Laura relishes these challenges and the joy of meeting and working with other spiritual souls from across the globe. She cares deeply about the church and its message and is inspired to do all she can with this opportunity. She will be in Portland, OR, from May 10-20 to work toward God’s call to unity. Laura is our “connection” and we send her off with prayers that her gifts of compassion, justice and hope will be a light to the General Conference and the future of the UMC. I encourage you to follow the news as the Conference unfolds at www.umc.org.

Midwest Mission Distribution Center CUMC’s 12th annual mission trip to the MMDC in Chatham, IL, will bring 11 enthusiastic workers to pack kits and flood buckets, sew, build desks, etc.! Caregivers’ Support Group meets on the Second Tuesday at 7:00 pm. Caring for a loved one can be a big responsibility and sometimes an overwhelming one. Join us for support, fellowship and practical advice from others who are on the same journey. This was formerly known as the Transitioning Aging Parents group, but now includes all caregivers, whether you are caring for a parent, spouse, adult child, or other loved one. The United Methodist Church has several camps throughout the state that provide kids with a wonderful week of Christian Community, faith development and lots of fun. Martha’s Helping Hands is a program at our church that delivers meals for short-term situations such as recovery from surgery, hospitalization, etc. Would you be willing to make all or part of a meal and deliver it? The American Cancer Society's Clarkston Relay For Life is coming May 16 CUMC is again sponsoring a team of walkers. The Annual Church Rummage Sale is coming June 4 so start saving your stuff. Donations will be accepted in the Fellowship Hall starting on May 23 and continuing through June 1 during normal church hours. Set up will start on May 31 and continue through Friday, June 3.
