1. Common Term Explanation

Since Ch ina S tatistical Y earbook Databa se (CSYD) con tains large amounts of diagrams, four concepts with unique significance are explained here. They are it em, index, full-text and knowledge network node.

1.1. Item

Items re fer t o names of secti ons under stati stical y earbooks, statistical c harts and nomination of the m ain bod y under sections, such as “Nati onal E conomic Accounting”, a brief i ntroduction and na mes o f c harts under the section in China Statistical Yearbook 2007.

1.2. Index

Index, short for statistical index, refers to category and its specific data which reflect the overall comprehensive fe atures of social an d ec onomic phenomena of the same kind. B esides th e main bod y of statistical y earbooks, index often appears in th e headers of various statistical charts. There are two kinds of explanations and methods of application. Firstly, it is the basic concept reflecting general phenomena and overall quantity, such as population at the year-end, gross domestic product and annual growth rate of GDP, etc. Secondly, it is a concept or datum reflecting o verall qu antity. For example, the total population of China at the end of 2001 is 1,276,270,000, and the growth rate of investment in social fixed assets is 13%.

1.3. Full-text

Full-text refe rs to the content of various chart s and brief expla nation of yearbooks under cer tain e ntry ti tle, such as the content under brief explanation of “ National Economic Accounting” a nd ind ex titles in “Chart 3-16 S tructure of GDP b y Expenditure Approach” in China Statistical Yearbook 2007.

1.4. Knowledge Network Node

Knowledge network node in CSYD: in the database, knowledge network node gathers entry points of m ain detailed index information and extended information related to indices in tables within a single item.

Page 7: China Statistical Yearbook Database (CSYD) (English ...tongji.cnki.net/overseas/CSYD_Userguide.pdf · Since China Statistical Yearbook Database (CSYD) contains large amounts of diagrams,

A si ngle item in th e table contains conten ts and sources of main in dices. Main contents include major indicators, districts, years and other key information. Extended information usually contains the following dimensions: (1) Expansion of the same item over the years: the association of items with the sa me name in all years in CSYD; (2) Expansion of items in the same section: the expanding association of other items in the sa me s ection with the current i tem; (3) Expansion of s imilar i tems by district: the exp anding as sociation of si milar i tems in d ifferent d istricts w ith t he current item.

Summary: The data of commercial buildings scatter on various statistical yearbooks in several y ears. Accor ding to traditional methods, users hav e to r ead at l est ten statistical yearbooks on paper, find out the related data, gather the needed information and then conduct further analysis. Since there are a large amount of calculating data, omissions are unavoidable. Compared with traditional methods, CSYD enables users to follow only a few steps to search, gather and analyze related data. Case 2: Shortcut for the exact numerical value of GDP in Shanghai from 2000 to 2006 (corresponding functional module: Data Search——Index Value Search) Data demand analysis: In this case, users have to find out the exact numerical value of certain index. According to traditional browsing or searching methods, they need to look for related statistical entries, download and browse the full text, and then find out the numerical value, which is relatively inconvenient to operate. By using the “Index Value Search” module, users can directly find out the exact numerical value and trace back to its data source. Operating Steps: Step one: set search conditions i.e.: Choose Year Coverage – fro m 2000 to 2006, Distric t o f index – S hanghai, and input th e k eyword ‘GD P’ in Index Title (or click “Choo se Index” to choose th e needed index from the entire index list). FAQ

1. How to make sure that the statistical data are highly authoritative and accurate?

First, the production and publication of statistical data are guaranteed by the Statistics Law of the People’s Republic of China. Thus the collection, calculation, analysis and publication of statistical data are highly authoritative and accurate. Second, there are hundreds of thousands of statisticians in statistical bureau system in China. Majored in economics and statistics, they are professionals with abundant data processing experience. Besides, data of various sectors come from statistical division in each ministry and commission, which keeps the data more professional. Third, state leaders pay close attention to statistical work. For exa mple, Vice Premier Li Keqiang was in charge of the second national economic census. Forth, CNKI coll ects large a mounts of statis tics and then check the d ata following quality inspection process, which ensures the accuracy and integrity of the data. Fifth, data and statistical indices in Exce l forma t are proc essed according to s trict standards. Every number in st atistical reports has its authoritative source and can be located in certain page of certain yearbook. 2. What does ‘mining’ mean in ‘data mining’?

Page 28: China Statistical Yearbook Database (CSYD) (English ...tongji.cnki.net/overseas/CSYD_Userguide.pdf · Since China Statistical Yearbook Database (CSYD) contains large amounts of diagrams,

Taken from technical terms such as ‘ knowledge mining’ and ‘data mining’, the word ‘mining’ means ‘dig out’ valu able things fro m a pile of raw materials. ‘Mining’ in CSYD carries two levels of meaning: a. Statistical diagrams are main contents of CS YD. Either on paper or scann ed, they are in convenient for us ers to extract and an alyze. Th is dat abase puts s tatistical diagrams in Excel format and provides the most convenient basis for data analysis. b. This d atabase mines and g athers st atistical ind ices of i mportant st atistical yearbooks into index value database and offers you one-step data analysis platform. For instance, if you want to collect and an alyze the ch ange of total population in Beijing since 1949 , without the ‘mining’ function, y ou have to read N ew China 50 Years S tatistics Compilation, Beijing S tatistical Yearbook (2 9 volumes) and Ch ina Population and E mployment Statistics Y earbook (22 volumes) in ord er to co llect enough data, which i s really time-consuming and ener gy-consuming; by u sing th e ‘mining’ function, it takes only a few seconds to obtain and analyze your data. 3. How frequently are the statistical yearbooks on paper and digital yearbooks in CSYD published respectively? Why statistical yearbook 2009 contains data of 2008? At present, there are more than 160 types of statistical yearbooks published by China Statistics Press each year, 50% of which are published in August and September. For example, China S tatistical Y earbook, the most influential y earbook in Ch ina, is published in September. Few yearbooks are pu blished at the b eginning of the n ext year. Why statistical yearbook 2009 contains data of 2008? Since the data of 2008, such as GDP and population, cannot b e collected un til the end of the year, w e can only calculate and edit the data of 2008 in 2009. Just because t he data in stati stical yearbooks are relativ ely la gged behind, CSYD provides the function of “monthly and quarterly statistics analysis.” 4. How frequently is CSYD published? The central w ebsite of CSYD i s updated every two weeks; th e mirror data ev ery month. It take s about o ne and a half months to two months to collect data, pub lish yearbooks on paper and put them on websites. 5. Why CSYD contains materials not entitled ‘statistical yearbook’? What are the recording principles of CSYD?

Page 29: China Statistical Yearbook Database (CSYD) (English ...tongji.cnki.net/overseas/CSYD_Userguide.pdf · Since China Statistical Yearbook Database (CSYD) contains large amounts of diagrams,

CSYD ai ms at providing you a co mplete and conv enient sta tistical data analysis system.
