Today, the chinese music continues a rich traditional heritage in one aspect, while emerging into a more contemporary form at the same time. The legendary founder of music in Chinese mythology was Ling Lun, who made bamboo pipes tuned to the sounds of birds.

The modern-day guzheng is a plucked, half-tube zither with movable bridges and 21 strings. However the number of strings may range anywhere from 15 to 25. A customized version even exists with more than 44 strings.

The main feature that distinguishes the modern konghou from the Western concert harp is that the modern konghou's strings are folded over to make two rows, which enables players to use advanced playing techniques. The two rows of strings also make it suitable for playing swift rhythms and overtones.

The sanxian is a Chinese lute, a three-stringed fretless plucked musical instrument. It has a long fingerboard, and the body is traditionally made from snakeskin stretched over a rounded rectangular resonator.
