About Chinese Paper
Paper has always been important to everybody,
everywhere. You may think when paper was made
long ago it was made the same way we make it now,
but you’re wrong. Paper did not begin from trees, like how paper is made
now. It began from something else. But do
you want to know where paper was invented, and who invented it? Paper
was invented in China. But to find the answers to the other questions, you will have to read this report.
About Chinese
Papermaking
In China, around 105 AD, Tsai’ Lun, the inventor of paper, made his paper by
mixing finely chopped mulberry bark and hemp rags with water, then mashing it flat, then pressing out the
water, and lastly letting it dry in the sun. Then this skill was
brought to India in the eleventh century and then brought to North and South
America around the sixteenth century. Then, in the
nineteenth century, the skill was brought to Australia, which made papermaking spread to the whole world.
About Things Used
Before Paper
Before Tsai’ Lun, books were made out of bamboo. They were also made out of
silk, which was very expensive, and would be hard to buy because the price would be way too
high for people to buy it. Also, in the West, books
were made out of sheepskin or calfskin. Did you know that people in China were trying to find something easier to write on other than papyrus or parchment? And that it
took 3,000 years to come up with paper? That is
really strange.
Paper
As you can see, China holds a great part in the history of
paper. And without Tsai’ Lun, we would still be writing on papyrus, or
parchment, or silk, etc. So if Tsai’ Lun were alive today, we would be thanking him
for inventing paper. We could all see Tsai Lun holds a much bigger part in the
history of paper then China does. And this would have
never been printed on paper.
