Earlier, Chinese President Mr Xi Jinping arrived in Chennai for his historic second Informal Summit with Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi. He reached at Chennai Airport in a special aircraft, where a red carpet welcome was accorded to him. Tamil Nadu Governor Shri Bunwarilal Purohit and Chief Minister Shri Edappadi K Palaniswamy received him at the Airport. The initiative aims at assuring dignified, respectful and quality health care at no cost and zero tolerance for denial of services for every woman and newborn visiting the public health facility in order to end all preventable maternal and newborn deaths. With a view to make these pristine Islands trash and plastic free, it was decided that Directorate of Rural Development will support these 10 model villages towards source segregation and door to door collection. Both of these aspects form the founding pillars of waste management and of the SWM Rules 2016. This will be a first of its kind initiative in the Andaman & Nicobar Islands wherein rural households will be educated about segregating their waste three ways- dry, wet, hazardous. By the end of this month, households in these 10 villages will start getting door to door collection for their segregated waste and all recyclable dry waste will be sent to mainland for recycling. It was proposed that households of these model villages may be given 3 dustbins each and bigger dustbins will be put up in SWM initiatives in 10 model villages Source segregation & door to door collection; best performing village to be awarded commercial areas. Several behaviour change strategies are planned in these villages, especially for children, without whom this mission would not be possible.
