On November 13, people throughout the world show their care for struggling cases that fill America like depression, drug addiction, self injury, and suicide. To Write Love On Her Arms (TWLOHA), is a non is a non-profit organization looking to provide sup-port and relief to those struggling with these conditions. To Write Love On Her Arms is dedicated to getting struggling victims help and give them hope. Last Friday, stu-dents were actually writing “love” on their arms for To Write Love On Her Arms Day, which celebrated the 3rd anniversary of the foundation.

TWLOHA was started by a story written by Jamie Tworkowski about his friend Renee Yohe who was struggling with addiction, depression, and thoughts of suicide. Tworkowski created shirts and a MySpace page to help fund Yhoe's treatment. What was started in hopes to help out a friend, quickly blew up into something more. TWLOHA quickly spread all around the country and is now a source of hope and encouragement to victims all around the globe.

By simply writing the word love on their forearm, students show their encouragement for struggling victims.

Grand Traverse Regional Land Conservancy is an inde-pendent, non-profit organiza-tion whose goal is to protect the beautiful landscapes of Antrim, Benzie, Grand Trav-erse, Kalkaska, and Manistee Counties. GTRLC has pro-tected well over 30,000 acres and over 90 miles of shoreline along some of Michigan’s lakes and rivers. Their closest preserve to Manistee, and largest independently owned area is the Arcadia Dunes: The C.S. Mott Nature Pre-serve. The Arcadia Dunes Preserve is 3,000 acres, and contains 15 miles of hiking and biking trails that are free for anyone to enjoy. There are two access points to the Arcadia Dunes preserve and the included trails, one on each side of M22. The western most is known as the Old Baldy trailhead, and features hiking trials, and a dune like bowl on top of the bluff 500 feet or so above Lake Michigan. The other trailhead is the Dry Hill trailhead, which features a ten-mile multi-purpose trail loop and a smaller two-mile loop. Both trailheads get their names from local nicknames for the

areas that have been in place well before the land was in GTRLC’s possession and make sense once the areas are seen.

Before the land conservancy ac-quired the land it was owned by consum-ers power where they had planned to build a pump storage plant similar to the one south of Ludington. In buying the property consumers displaced all of the farmers that lived on Dry Hill and in turn decreased Arcadia’s population. Fortunately consum-ers didn’t do anything to the land and it sat

stagnant for years. Prior to that plans were under-way to build a subdivision near Old Baldy, estab-lished gravel roads can still be easily seen while walking around the pre-serve, as well as the posts for what was sup-posed to be a monorail system that would take residents down the bluff to the beach.

By protecting these 3,000 acres GTRLC is able to allow future generations to experience Michigan’s untainted beauty. The

preserve is open year around, and allows hunting with permission from GTRLC. With plans in the works to protect the Lake Ar-cadia watershed as well which is a huge producer of Lake Michigan salmonids. GTRLC is doing good things in Northern Michigan and is helping to encourage out-door activities and environmental sustain-ability. For more information on Grand Traverse Regional Land Conservancy go to www.gtrlc.org .

There is a program called Fortiguard that has affected the way that students surf the Internet. This program is content filtration software device. This program filters content for schools and public libraries, and it is mandated by federal law. It compares URLs that people try to navigate to with a master listing of URLs and IP addresses. Depending on the settings for an individual installa-tion, Fortiguard then either allows the user through to the site or gives you the generic Fortiguard screen. URLs and IP addresses can be white listed or blacklisted. The database of sites is managed by a community of users and any users that find the sites unacceptable or inappropriate.

Basically, it traffics certain sites so that some are blocked and some aren't. Fortiguard is controlled by the MAPS tech depart-ment with assistance from the Manistee ISD. MAPS tech department and the Manistee ISD can re-evaluate a site to make it white listed when it is submitted. Recently, white boxes have been showing up instead of the images of Google Images. This is a cache that the tech department has been working on, but some images are blocked because of inappropriate content on that web page.

“Internet connectivity is provided to students for educational purposes. It isn’t provided for any other reason. Because of the discrete nature of our content control there is always going to be content that is blocked that could be deemed educationally ap-propriate because it is hosted by sites that have material that we have to block by federal law. We do our best to minimize these situations but like so many things in life, there is no perfect solution for this situation. We are always open to considering if a page should be unblocked.” said Mr. Blakey-Shell

Noah Biorkman is a 5-year-old boy that lives in South Lyon, MI. In February of 2007 Noah was diagnosed with Nueroblas-toma Cancer and has been living with it ever since. Nueroblastoma Cancer is a cancer that only affects children. It originates in nerves and spreads all over the body. Noah is now in stage IV of Nueroblastoma Cancer. Ever since Noah was three years old he has been fighting for his life. After diagnosed with stage IV he went into remission. Unfortunately though, he is not expected to make it to Christmas and so he is celebrating it early this year. A lot of kids would love to celebrate it early, but for Noah it will most likely be his last Christmas. His mother Diana and father Scott are determined to give their son his last wish. Noah would like Christmas cards.

On October 31st Diana posted her son's care page, that was hosted by Detroit's Children hospital, asking friends and family to Christmas cards so that they could celebrate Christmas with him last weekend. Facebook caught on to the story and posted a plea for cards and soon after so did local news stations. Noah's story has captured the attention of people all over the world. The South Lyon Post Office has esti-mated that they have received at least 30,000 cards and 1,200 packages ever since November 1st. Packages have had return addresses from Australia, China, Malaysia, and Great Britain. This small child has inspired a lot of people.

If you want to send this little boy a Christmas card the address is:

Ratemyteachers.com is a website where you can leave comments about your teachers and rate them based off of the subject they teach. To leave a comment about a teacher, you have to create an account on the website, but you can read comments without making an account. Our high school and middle school are both on the website. When you go to the website you just type in the name of your school and it gives you suggestions. You then find your school and you can read the comments about your teachers. Some of the comments for our teachers haven’t been updated since 2004 and 2006, so it’s not frequently used for some. But there are recent comments updated from this year, some as recent as last week. If you want to read some of the comments on rate my teachers, go to this link: http://www.ratemyteachers.com/manistee-high-school/10554-s.

Remembering Mr. Olsen By: Michael Bond

When I was a little kid, I remember my mom telling me that there are some people in life that you respect so much that you don't refer to them by their first name. Mr. Olsen was that kind of person.

Mr. Olsen always had his heart in the right place. He attended any event associated with the school, and gave his all for the students in Manistee. I knew him first as a principal. I really looked forward to have him running my school, and was slightly disap-pointed when he was promoted to superintendent because I wouldn't be able to talk to him on a regular basis.

I soon found, however, that he fitted the job well. His level of commitment was uni-versal. Mr. Olsen gave so much to the school, and it really paid off.

I got to know Mr. Olsen when I was five. I moved into a house down the street from him. He was always there for me even though I didn't always know it. I walked by his house every day in the summer, and he watched me grow as a person, physically and mentally.

My family always knew the Olsen's as good people. I knew him as more than just a superintendent. I knew him as a neighbor, mentor, friend, and most importantly, I knew him as a good man.

As the leaves begin to change and the tem-perature gets colder, the sports shift into the winter season. Some sports start off their first ever season and others are preparing to ex-ceed high expectations. Teams are going to all extents to prepare for their seasons and do what it takes to live up to their Chippewa leg-acy.

The girls' basketball team is preparing to be a reckoning force in their district, and is looking take districts for another year along with a possible regional title. The team is ready to do whatever it takes to get to the top. With a prac-tice at midnight on the official day starting day, and two a day practices for a week. The team is expected have success with their five start-ing seniors who have been preparing for this year for their whole lives. The girls' basketball team only lost two seniors last year, so they remain pretty strong for the season with this years' six seniors.

The girls' ski team anticipates another year of victory. The team is sending their top four seeds to Copper Mountain ski camp during Thanksgiving to make sure they stay strong. After winning conference, regionals and states in 2009, the girls' ski team looks to repeat their triumphs from last year. The team suffers from the graduation of Katie Bramble, who was the team's first seed last year. Although they lose

Bramble, the team seeks to fill in her loss with a new fourth seed. After being the first team to win states since the girls' basketball team 27 years ago, they want to keep that spark alive.

The boys' ski team also suffers the loss of graduating seniors. They lose their first and second seed and are dying to stay strong this year. The team is only has four veteran skiers who are on the team, but has a couple begin-ners that they're hoping will keep their team alive. Although they got runner up at last year's state finals, they will find it tough to repeat their achievement after losing three strong seniors. While the girls' team sends five of their team members to ski camp to prepare for their sea-son, the boys ski team sends none, but still hopes to keep strong this season.

The boys basketball team looks to regain some strength from a tough season last year. This year the team faces many changes. After losing head coach, Paul Marfia, the team is now being coached by History teacher, Greg Bennett. Due to a coach change, the team will be in for a completely different style. Despite losing five seniors and a coach, the basketball team remains strong with this years' seniors. With the coach change, they're also ready to get some energy back.

Wrestling team is in for a successful sea-son. They're looking to take wins home in most of their matches. They're suffering from the

loss of Caleb Bailey, but are remaining strong with the addition of many strong freshman wrestlers. The team is hoping to get off to a quicker start than last year. While last year was one of the best year that the wresting team witnessed, the team is eager to keep the stronger energy going through this year. Many seniors have been building up until this year, and are looking to take many wins in the winter season.

The boys swim team is preparing for their first team ever this winter. With many begin-ners, the team is expecting this season to be mostly about learning. They goal for the team is to build on their mistakes and still have some triumphs. Coach Corey Van Fleet is expecting to put the boys through intense two a day prac-tices to get his team whipped into shape. This year, the team is looking to have high num-bers, and isn't focusing on the skill level. To prepare, the boys are doing laps after school, but they still aren't prepared for what Van Fleet has in store for the boys. Even though they're not so sure about the success of the year, the team is new and has lots of energy in the pool. New coaches, beginning seasons, and high expectations may be some diverse variables affecting the season, but one thing remains the same for all of the Chippewa win-ter sports; the drive to win.

Swimming

Pretty well. Its gonna be a lot of trial and error, but I think we got a good relay coming.

Ludington. Especially this one guy, Mason, who I use to swim against.

I want to break 50 seconds in 100 free, and 23 seconds in the 50 free.

Swimming laps everyday after school.

Hayden Codden- Freshman

Wrestling

I think we'll be undefeated as a team.

Ludington for sure. I hoping we'll go to state. Lifting and running a lot.

Kevin Kott-

Basketball

I expect to have a pretty good year and I expect it to be a lot of fun.

Ludington. Win a district championship. Shooting, running, and lifting.

Ashley Tiefenthal-

Girls Basketball

We're expecting to do good in the regular season. Defi-nitely better than last year.

Ludington of course. But I also am excited to take on Traverse City West.

Joe Frederick-

Boys Skiing

We're gonna be struggling to have a full team.

It'll be interesting.

Definitely Harrison. Individually make it to state, and I'm hoping to get All State.

Biking, and some conditioning.

Nathalie Kenny-

Sophomore

Girls Skiing

It will be an amazing sea-son as usual! We still have a strong team, but we will have to work harder with-out Katie.

A lot of people! Probably Tori McVicker for Petos-key.

For us to win state again and to actually win state in GS.

I swam on the swim team, I condi-tion on my own, and we begin ski conditioning soon.

Sometime in 2004, art school students Dave Davison, Shiraz Dada, Erin Elders, and Chris Hainey formed what is now one of the best bands out there. No joke. Unlike most bands nowadays, this foursome actually incorporates every instrument (yes, even bass) to each of their songs, resulting in exquisitely technical riffs that somehow remain under absolute control and melody, or as Maps & Atlases themselves would say, “songs that wrestle themselves from flailing, algebraic fits of spazzy guitar notes and drum ruptures to lulling, voice-driven melodies that speak stories using lyrical images strung together like soup cans chasing a Cadillac. Maps and Atlases create a distinctive blend of the intricate and organic.” The band’s overall sound may not be something most people would listen to (it’s no T-Pain or Lady Gaga, sorry), so second-chances may be needed. However, if ever in need of inspiration or creative musical ideas, this band may provide you hope or make you want to give up all together. For a taste of what the band is, check out either song “Every Place Is a House” or “The Most Trustworthy Tin Cans” at their myspace: http://www.myspace.com/mapsandatlases

UP : Not Your Average Family Movie By: Yoav Placencia

This last Tuesday October 10th, Pixar’s latest masterpiece Up was released on DVD and Blu-Ray. The May 29th release film, is back for those that for some reason missed out the first time around. While its friendly colors and animations may send a family message, don’t be fooled, as even shown on mylifeisav-erage, “Today, my brother had a friend over. They decided to watch a movie. When I walked into the room, they were holding each other and sobbing. They're 17 year old guys. They were watching Up. MLIA.” The film has even been speculated to be nominated under the “Best Picture” category for the next Academy Awards.

Though word of advise, do NOT expect the movie to be realistically true, or it will be ruined. That’s be-cause the movie itself is more of a fantasy trip to South America, which deals with “talking” dogs, an exotic,

giant, and genius bird named Kevin, and the fact that in order to raise a house with helium balloons, it would actually take about 12.7 million of them, not the approximate 20,000 shown in the movie. If reality is still a must, then this movie won’t be for you.

If you however, plan on letting go of logic for a second, and enjoy the many random laughs and actually sad scenes, then Up will easily be-come on of your new favorite mov-ies. This film is directed by Peter Docter (Monsters, Inc.), and voices done by Christopher Plummer ( Muntz), Bob Peterson (Dug), Ed-ward Asner (Carl Fredricksen), and more.

So if you see your family watching Up (or simply don’t know what movie to rent next), don’t be afraid to take a sit; you won’t be disap-pointed.

In 2003, a show was intro-duced to NBC. The Office is a spin-off of a show origi-nally made for British televi-sion.

This version of The Office is a documentary style show based on a mid-sized paper company in Scran-ton, Pennsylvania.

Personally, I love no show more than The Office. It has revolutionized humor for me. It has a subtle hu-mor that is just gut busting. I look forward every week to Thursday night at 9:00pm so I can watch the next episode of the hilari-ous comedy that is now filled with suspense.

This season, we introduced the job of co-manager. This job was given to Jim Halpert, who is known as a worker that is not enthusiastic, but he will get the job done. Dwight Schrute, the loyal worker who is usually the to salesman in the company and sucks up to the boss, is not at all happy about Jim getting the job after years of loyal service. So far in the season, Dwight has

tried to sabotage Jim by put-ting a tape recorder in a wooden mallard and also tried to use favors to his advantage by handing out New York-style bagels.

This week, there was news of the company going under with bankruptcy. An article in the Wall Street Journal in-formed the Scranton branch about possibly going bank-rupt. Michael Scott tries to relieve the increasingly stressed out branch with a game of murder.

In Michael's game, all of the office is told to role play to crack the case of the murder. Of course, Dwight took the murder seriously, and interro-

gated his coworkers. The whole episode was broken up by news of the company with no real solution. In the end, they end up spending an hour after the work day is up to play a game of hold up, and the end became light-hearted.

These are the types of episodes that just make me laugh. There are always those little scenes that make awkward or ironic situations, and I enjoy every second of it.

The Office: What More Could You Want?

Complaints Cost Gymnastics Team State Title By: Katie Dooley

In Kansas, Shawnee Mission Northwest High lost their first place title in a gymnastics competition last weekend because their coach was asking officials at the competition improper questions that were against the rules and made the judges take a point off their score, moving the team from 103.9 points to 102.9 points, thus moving them to third place.

“It's for the flow of the sport itself. To allow a coach to always question an official could really interrupt the flow of events for the athletes and the competition,” says Becky Oakes, assistant director at the National Fed-eration for State High Associations, about the rules of the game.

This is the second time this has happened this year; in Maryland, a cross country team was denied the championship because of a team member’s inappropriate stitching on an undergarment. It’s rare that this happens in any sport, but it shows you should keep your comments to yourself, especially to officials who are judging the game.

The athletic director of Shawnee High, Richard Grinage, says “Our coach made an inquiry and it ended up being an issue that's not allowed to be inquired about.” He also says what happened is bad for everyone and it’s unfortunate that things had to be settled the way they were. But the girls on the team handled it very well. “We're proud of the way the girls performed and how the handled themselves throughout the process,” he says. This situa-tion is the perfect example to keep your mouth shut in certain situations.

The Idiot’s Guide to New Moon By: Katie Dooley

New Moon comes out this weekend, and the anticipation for the movie is huge. The clips that have been shown have been watched millions of times, and fans are pretty much going crazy.

There are countdowns on websites that are going as much as counting the seconds to when the movie premieres.

New Moon is the second movie in the Twilight Saga and the second book in the series as well. For those of you who have been living under a rock for the past year since “Twilight” premiered, the book (New Moon) is when Edward Cullen (played by Robert Pattinson) leaves Bella Swan (played by Kristen Stewart), and she ultimately goes into a deep depres-sion. She becomes best friends with an old family friend, Jacob Black (played by Taylor Lautner), who about halfway through the book has to keep a secret of his own.

Along the way, Bella learns what Jacob really is, and why Edward left her. She comes face to face with what she’s feared most, and essentially has to save Edward herself.

There’s tons of high expectation for this movie, and I as well am excited for it. Tickets on Fandango are sold out in a lot of places, and movie theaters will no doubt be packed on the 20th.

It’s said to be very dramatic and a lot different from Twilight. So if you plan on buying tickets online, you should do it soon. That way you’ll have your spot reserved on time.

Current.com and Current TV are owned by former Vice President Al Gore, and bring a young, hip, and new way style to reporting on worldly issues. Current’s use of what they call viewer created content allows anyone that has an interesting story and a camera to become a contributor. Their television programming is based in half hour seg-ments, but contains these smaller “pods” or viewer created shorts mostly pertaining to one similar topic.

Their web-based content is the same as that on TV, but everything is searchable and viewable whenever. Their website also contains some written news articles in addition to the video content. However, not everything on Current is viewer created content. Current also has a large production team that makes full length shows that range in content from: a satirical newscast called Info Mania, to a movie review show based off of Rotten Tomatoes.com the Rotten Tomatoes Show, an animated satirical cartoon Su-pernews, and their emmy nominated investigative journalism series Vanguard. Also new to current in the last month or so is a show called Embedded, were Current will follow around various musicians and interview them about their roots, and the recording process. Recent artist on Embedded have been Ben Harper, Common, Mos Def, and The Silversun Pickups just to name a few. One of the most popular and longest running shows on current is Info Mania. Info Mania bases most of it’s sto-ries on things that are happening in the media. Host Conor Knighton is the “anchor”, but as with any news team, there are other hosts of certain weekly segments like: “Viral Video Film School,” “The Tech Report,” “Target Women,” “Sergio’s White Hot Top 5,” and “That’s Gay.”

Most of the shows on Current are meant to be informational, tackling things like the environment, and human rights issues, but while doing a good amount of the viewer created content, as well as Current’s own stories are humorous in nature. Cur-rent is a very interesting television station, that delivers what young people have been looking for, intelligent television. So check Current out either online at www.current.com or check your local listings for current TV.

I found a review on the App Store that said the Chanel App is “Fun, free, and very visual. The layout is very easy to navigate.” Chanel was one of the first fashion and beauty applications in the App Store, so all you fashion gurus ought to give it a peek.
