Quarterly Newsletter April – June 2019

Board Message – Quarter 2, 2019 By Laura Schick, CVSHRM President

Summer is finally here – woot woot! It also marks the half-way point of 2019, a great time to check-in on how we are doing as an organization. You may recall, the CVSHRM Board met in January for their 2nd annual strategic planning session. We established goals and set the stage for continued growth and increased engagement. In June, we met for our next extended session to review our scorecard and determine what goals are on track and where we need to make adjustments. We also reviewed the recent member survey to assist us with this process. The board thanks you for your input

and your continued support as we work hard to develop CVSHRM’s contribution to our members, communities, and the HR profession!

In Loving Memory of Staci Hotujec

As some of you may know, a beloved member of the HR profession, a wife, a mother, and our friend, Staci Hotujec, lost her battle to Melanoma earlier this year. Staci, previously an Organizational Talent Advisor at Royal Credit Union, was a volunteer for CVSHRM as Networking Group Coordinator since 2017. There will be a benefit and baby shower in her honor on June 30, and we hope that you can join us there. Come out and help celebrate Staci’s life while supporting Dustin (her husband), Boone (her new baby) and her family. There will be silent auction, raffle prizes, and a bake sale.

For more information about the event or Staci’s journey, please check out Staci’s Story on Facebook.

Board Position Changes/Updates

CVSHRM is losing some long-standing board members, Abbi Olson and Lara Riste. Abbi’s job responsibilities are changing, and Lara is relocating out of the Chippewa Valley. Both Abbi and Lara have been assisting the CVSHRM board for several years. We thank them for their dedication, contributions, and support! Good luck to you both! Karla Dickson, who has been serving as interim Director of Member Communications, will be serving out the remainder of Abbi’s term. Katie Walk is returning to the CVSHRM Board in the role of Website Coordinator. Also, Joe Underwood is now CVSHRM’s Networking Group Coordinator. We are so fortunate to have such great talent to assist with each transition and further develop these roles. Welcome and thank you to you all!

Programming Chit Chat By Brooke Richartz, CVSHRM VP of Programming

As we start to enjoy the warmer weather and all the new blossoms that come with it, we can also look forward to some upcoming programming to help grow our own professional development. To reflect, the April HR conference in April included many hot topics regarding recruiting and the Leadercast Live experience had some amazing speakers that challenged us to up our game and become the leaders we were meant to be! This past week we had Sarah Stokes, from The Juicy Good Life and Stokes + Herzog, who took us through tips and tricks on how to Build Success and Keep Your Sanity. We could all use these tips as we take on more and more each year with the stressors of life in general and busy careers! We have some social events in July and then we bounce back to putting on our leadership hats to learn about Collaborative Leadership and how that can help us be better HR leaders in August. To look further out, we will have our 2nd Legal event of the year in September and our Membership appreciation party in October! We look forward to this event every year, as it sets the stage for what YOU, our members, would like to see for the future of CVSHRM. As always, please connect with me on LinkedIn or reach out to me at [email protected] if you have ideas about programming or want to chat about HR!

How Humor Can Keep Employees Engaged By Devin Hughes | June 14, 2019 | Reprinted from Society from Human Resources Management (SHRM) Online

This article is available through SHRM Online using this link: https://www.shrm.org/ResourcesAndTools/hr-topics/employee-

Editor's Note: SHRM has partnered with the Association for Talent Development (ATD) to bring you relevant articles on key HR topics and strategies. Why do we care about humor? Because it works. And in a world where 83 percent of Americans feel stressed at work, 55 percent of Americans are unsatisfied with their jobs, and 47 percent of Americans struggle to stay happy, something has to change.

What's at stake? Close to a trillion dollars in lost productivity and increased costs. The national employee engagement rate currently hovers around 30 percent. Each year, U.S. companies lose an estimated:

$300 billion due to stressed workers

$500 billion due to disengaged employees

$11 billion due to employee turnover.

Being happy at work is important. Studies suggest that if you're not happy at work, you're less productive, more likely to take sick days, and likely to become a poor problem solver. Still, some people maintain being happy at work isn't important—that happiness is just one possible by-product of a good working environment and not worth being its own goal. I think, however, this comes from a fundamental misunderstanding of how happiness can benefit us. Too often we feel that if we are laughing during work, people may think we are "slacking off." Professor Sophie Scott from University College London, however, says, "Laughter is a subconscious signal that we're in a state of relaxation and safety." Studies show that humor in the workplace can boost employee productivity and even enhance performance. A Wharton study found that laughter promotes creativity and greater analytical precision. So, not only are your employees inspired to perform, they perform better. Laughter is also one of the best stress management tools. As the Mayo Clinic reports, more giggles are just what the doctor ordered because laughter increases the release of feel-good chemicals, reduces tension and helps us connect with others. How Humor Helps

Humor beats stress. Chronic stress can cause muscle tension, high blood pressure and decreased immunity. Humor can counteract these negative effects. Studies have shown that laughter can relax muscles, decrease blood pressure and improve our immune system.

Humor engages employees. Disengaged employees cost companies billions of dollars in lost productivity through absenteeism, presenteeism and ineffective results. Managers who use humor benefit from high levels of employee engagement and work performance, not just for their direct reports but for themselves.

Humor reduces turnover. The estimated cost to replace an employee ranges from 20 to 150 percent of that person's annual salary and effects the entire department. Employees who work in a humorous organization report higher workplace satisfaction scores and say they are less likely to leave their roles.

Humor connects us with others. Positive sounds, such as laughter or a triumphant "woo-hoo!," can trigger a response in the listener's brain. The response is automatic and helps us interact socially by priming us to smile or laugh, thereby connecting us with the other person.

Humor reduces status differentials. Humor can help to reduce the social distance between managers and employees.

Humor defuses conflict. Humor has long been seen as the great equalizer—a means to facilitate conversation and bridge differences. In fact, humor has been identified as a key factor in peace-building and international mediation.

Humor builds trust. Social benefits of humor include group cohesiveness, reduction of status differentials, diffusion of conflict, and team and trust building among diverse groups.

Humor encourages people to work together. A growing body of research shows that when you share a laugh with someone, you're mirroring not only one another's body language but also the hormonal and neuronal activity, prompting a mutual investment in each other's well-being.

If you decide you want to add more laughter and smiles to your work environment, the next thing to consider is how you use humor without offending or getting in trouble. The answer is to keep your jokes within these rules:

Stay away from religion and politics.

Don't make sexual references—ever.

Do not make fun of any clients, competitors or individuals.

Never be malicious with your material
