Chiquibul Cave System
Chiquibul Cave SystemWithin the Chiquibul National Forest lies the Chiquibul CaveSystem (CCS), the longest and largest known network of cavesin Central America. Over 55 km of passages have beenmapped and surveyed, including the largest known passageand cave room in the Western Hemisphere. The CCS is a crossboundary feature as a small section reaches into Guatemala.The CCS, due to its extent and integrity represents one ofthose unique and prestigious cultural features worthy ofnational importance.

The Emblematic Species
• The Scarlet Macaw (Ara macao)û The species is classified under Appendix I of the
Convention on International Trade in EndangeredSpecies (CITES).
û And they are considered Endangered on theInternational Union for the Conservation of Nature(IUCN) Red List.
• Jaguar (Panthera onca)û As of 2002 the Jaguar was declared Near
Threatened and placed on International Union forthe Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List.
û Jaguars are present in CNP but rare. However, withthe establishment of the central Belize cat corridorwe would expect to see their numbers slowlyincrease.
• Harpy Eagle (Harpija harpyja)û This species is classified as Near Threatened on
(IUCN) Red List, but almost regionally extinct in CNP.û Harpy Eagles’ once thrived in CNP; recently, Harpy
Eagles’ have been reintroduced in CNP but they arestill rare.
