Another R-2 school year in the books

By the time this weeks Gascon-ade County Republican reaches the majority of our subscribers by mail, another year of classes at Owensville High School will be in the history books.

As OHS Track is the lone sport still competing, it has been a very interesting and story-filled school year on the field of competition.

To open the 2011-12 school year back in August, new eras in Dutchmen football and Dutchgirl softball were ushered in with new head coaches Dale Long and Angie Woodruff taking over their respec-tive programs.

With Long getting his first win in his coaching debut against Po-tosi at Dutchmen Field, Woodruff needed only two games to break into the win column thanks to a bases-loaded walk by senior So-phie Grus against Linn in OHS’ home opener at Lions Field.

WASHINGTON — For the second consecutive meet, another Owensville High School track record was broken.

Nearly two weeks removed from Katie Gregor taking over the girls shot put mark from Courtney Nicks, OHS’ girls 4x800-meter relay team made another revision to the track record board necessary.

Previously held in 2001 by the Dutch-girl quartet of Miranda Knight, Leah Hempelmann, Christa Sperling and Brandi Penberthy, their 4x800-meter relay record time of 10:12 was eclipsed during the MSHSAA Class 3, District 5 Track Meet Saturday at St. Francis Borgia.

Clinching their spot at sectionals this Saturday in Marshfield with a fourth-place and record setting 4x800 time of 10:09.18 was the freshmen foursome of Kristen Charboneau, Emily Ellis, Hannah Baehr and Emily Koepke.

“We finally had a chance to get these girls together to run a race,” OHS Track head coach Matt Candrl said. “Emily Ellis ran a huge second leg for us and it was an awesome race by all four girls.”

Shortly after the record-breaking run, a pair of Dutchmen throwers extended their season by another week in the boys shot put.

Junior Trevor Nicks took second in the shot with a long distance of 46-04. Senior Lynde Mantels need a mark of 44-10 on his final throw of the competition to take fourth place and advance to sectionals.

“A lot of throwers had a rough day today and we were fortunate Trevor (Nicks) and Lynde (Mantels had good days,” Candrl said. “They found a way to get it done and

line in the 300-meter hurdles, freshman Devon Dowler’s time of 42.75 earned him third place and a spot at sectionals.

“I was so pumped to see him trip across the finish line and still qualify for section-als,” Candrl said. “When you put a 15-year old against 18-year olds and see success,

Missing a golden opportunity to tie the game or perhaps take the lead, Tim Nagel’s Dutchmen baseball team saw Waynesville’s Tigers leave Memorial Field last Thursday with a 7-2 victory.

Senior hurler Tanner Reid got the start for the Dutchmen. Pitching around a one-out single and fielder’s choice, Reid gave his offense a chance to give him a lead in the bottom of the first.

Retired in just five pitches, both teams entered the second inning scoreless.

In a top of the second inning that could

have turned ugly, catcher Josh Gregor faked a throw to second catching a Tiger runner off third base. Catching him in a rundown, Gregor tagged out the runner trying to score for the second out of the inning. Once the dust settled, Owensville gave up just one run on a hit, a walk and two errors.

Eerily similar to the bottom of the first, the Dutchmen only saw another five pitches from the Waynesville hurler in the bottom of the second.

Already trailing 1-0, OHS suddenly found themselves behind 3-0 after the top of the third via a walk and an error.

As the bottom of the third inning came to fruition, so did the Dutchmen bats.

Dalton Littrell became OHS’ first base runner with a one-out single. Later in the inning with two outs, Nathan Smith reached on an error and Littrell reached third base on the play sliding under a tag.

Freshman Landon Farrell drew a walk to load the bases before the inning ended on a fly ball out in foul territory leaving the bases full of Owensville runners.

Record misses sectionals by six feet in the discusBY WILL JOHNSONRepublican Sports Editor

WASHINGTON — While eight Owensville Track and Field athletes are moving on to sectionals this Saturday in Marshfield, several younger OHS athletes gained valu-able experience in their first district track meet.

“With several athletes competing in their first district meet, I’m very pleased with how we competed,” OHS head track coach Matt Candrl said. “I look forward to a very bright future for our track program.”

Coming into the girls discus with the second-farthest throw at 115-04, sophomore Haley Record was look-ing for her first trip to sectionals.

Recording a best mark of 100-07, Record settled for fifth place in the event seeing her sophomore season come to an end.

Fellow sophomore Jaelyn Gauer also competed in the shot put and discus for the Dutchgirls.

Making the finals of the shot put, Gauer’s best throw of 34-00 put her in sixth place in the event and two feet out of fourth place.

Going into a stacked girls triple jump, freshman Breanna Baker and senior Michelle Wehmeyer knew a herculean effort would be needed to advance to Marshfield.

Giving it their best, Baker settled

Record-breaking 4x800 Dutchgirl freshmen quartetPreviously set back in 2001 by the Dutchgirl 4x800-relay team of Leah Hempelmann, Miranda Knight, Christa Sperling and Brandi Penberthy, they saw their over decade old record broken Saturday during the Missouri State High School Activities Association (MSHSAA) Class 3 District 5 Track Meet at St. Francis Borgia Regional High School. Setting a new school record 4x800 time of 10:09.18 was the Owensville High School freshmen foursome (above, from left) of Kristen Charboneau, Emily Ellis, Hannah Baehr and Emily Koepke. These four girls, along with Mandie Robertson and Megan Dunlap serving as alternates, will look to earn a trip to state with a top-four finish in Marshfield during sectionals Saturday.

Spending the last Saturday in April at Pacific High School, Matt Candrl’s 8th grade Dutchmen track-sters came away with a fourth-place finish in the team standings.

Recording the high finish of the day for the OMS 8th graders was Matt Amptman taking third in the shot put with a throw of 34-10. Anthony Soest (10th at 30-08) and Tanner Landolt (11th at 30-05) also hovered around the top 10.

Bouncing back in the discus, Landolt (4th at 98-00) and Soest (5th at 91-01) recorded top-five marks to end their throwing day. Xander Bunton also took eighth in the discus with a distance of 85-05.

Dyllan McClure added to the Dutchmen team total clearing 4-08 in the high jump to place eighth.

Clearing 6-06 in the pole vault, Logan Decker tied for 13th place.

Leaping to a distance of 16-03, Blake Bohl and Austin Brocato finished within the top six of the long jump. Bohl also recorded a mark of 31-06 good for seventh in the triple jump.

Nathan Keeney picked up a pair of sixth-place time in the 100 (12.38) and 200-meter dashes (26.19).

OMS Dutchmen distance run-

ners Danny Herrera and Wyatt Harrell continued to improve on their times at the Pacific Middle School Relays.

In the 800-meter run, Herrera was fifth with a time of 2:22.00 and Harrell took ninth in 2:29.00.

In the 1600-meter run, Carter Brocato placed fifth in 5:15.00 and Harrell was right behind him in sixth in a time of 5:54.00.

Bohl added a sixth-place time of 17.09 in the 100-meter hurdles to his earlier finish in the long jump.

Finishing no worse than sixth, all three Dutchmen relay teams scored points towards their team total.

Taking sixth in a time of 51.15 was the 4x100-meter relay team of Devon Ridenhour, Christian Tripoli, Austin Brocato and Tripoli.

Recording a fifth-place time of 1:47.21 in the 4x200-meter relay was the Dutchmen foursome of Bailey Flathers, Clayton Howard, Herrera and Tripoli. Also taking fifth in the 4x400-meter relay in a time of 4:04.00 was the team of Carter Brocato, Harrell, Herrera and Howard.

More OMS track results will be included in future issues of The Republican as space allows.

for 12th with a distance of 29-07.5.Bouncing back in the long jump,

Wehmeyer made the finals and took sixth with a leap of 15-03 putting her within an inch of fourth place and a spot at sectionals.

that’s a pretty big deal.”Entering the girls shot put,

Dutchgirl sophomore Katie Gregor had to longest throw with a distance of 39-10.

Even though she was over two feet shy of that mark, Gregor still managed to finish third in the shot qualifying for sectionals with a put of 37-08.5.

“It’s tough to come in as the top dog in an event in any meet,” Candrl said. “Katie (Gregor) believed in herself and found a way to extend her season by another week.”

Looking to follow in her sister’s footsteps, Baehr also went for sectional berths in the 1600 and

3200-meter runs.Competing first in the mile. The

Dutchgirl freshman kept a steady pace with Borgia’s Haley Russell settling for second to the Lady Knight with a time of 5:35.54. That time was over a second faster than her seed time of 5:36.69.

Over two laps into the 3200, Baehr and Russell continued to set the pace until the Borgia runner could not finish the race due to sick-ness. Fighting off Versailles harrier Emily Nealley, Baehr also finished second with a 3200 time of 12:20.81.

Prior to the 3200, Ellis added a second event to her sectional list with a second-place time of 1:00.93 in

the 400-meter dash. This was also a new personal record (PR) by nearly two-tenths of a second.

Sectional track action at Marsh-field High School on Saturday will get underway at noon with the field events and track events will start at 12:15 p.m., with the 4x800-meter relay.

Athletes and relay teams finish-ing in the top four of their respective events Saturday will qualify for the 2012 MSHSAA Track and Field Championships to be held May 25-26 at Lincoln University’s Dwight T. Reed Stadium in Jefferson City.

another error. Further damage was avoided when Reid started a 7-6-2-5 double play leading to a Waynes-ville runner being out at third base.

Now trailing 4-0, OHS was simply looking to get on the board in the bottom of the fourth.

After a leadoff double by catcher Josh Gregor, senior Josh Littrell took over as a courtesy runner on the base pads. Littrell later scored on a one-out RBI single off the bat of Alex Moritz to get Owensville on the scoreboard. With Moritz stranded at first, the Dutchmen went into the fifth inning trailing 4-1.

With a walk and a hit in the top of the fifth, the visiting Tigers got the run back taking a 5-1 lead.

Retiring the Dutchmen in order in the bottom of the fifth, Waynes-ville had a chance to add to their lead in the sixth.

Thanks to three hits and a pair of costly errors, the Tigers now owned

Her junior cousin Clara Weh-meyer took 16th in the long jump with a distance of 13-06.5.

Nearly setting a new personal record (PR), fellow Dutchgirl junior Angela Soest cleared 8-06 in the pole vault to settle for sixth.

In her final high jump, Michelle Wehmeyer cleared the bar at 4-06 to tie for ninth. Baker cleared 4-04 to settle for 12th in her first taste of district competition.

Fielding a pair of young relay teams, Candrl is very excited about the future of OHS Track.

“Even though they’re young, our girls relay teams competed hard against a solid field of teams,” Candrl said.

Taking 10th in the 4x200-meter relay was the Dutchgirl quartet of Clara Wehmeyer, Mackenzie Lampkin, Sue Meyer and Morgan Belloir in a time of 1:57.56.

Winning their heat of the girls 4x100-meter relay with a time of 52.94 was the OHS foursome of Ali Doll, Clara Wehmeyer, Charboneau and Ellis. This time was almost three seconds faster than their previous PR this year and also the fastest since the state teams of 2006.

Breaking the 50-second bar-rier in the 300-meter hurdles, Ellis settled for sixth in the event with a time of 49.95. Scarlett Warner also took 10th with a final time of 51.17.

Warner also made the finals of the 100-meter hurdles taking sev-enth with a time of 17.61. Carry Schroeter ended her sophomore season with a 100 hurdles time of 20.06 good for 17th place.

a 7-1 lead over Owensville.During the bottom of the sixth,

one of six Dutchmen seniors made his last plate appearance at Memo-rial Field worthy of remembering.

Corey Thomas connected on a single before being replaced on the bases by pinch runner Sam Rohr.

Unable to score, OHS gave the ball to Moritz after Jacob Linders pitched over an inning of relief.

Setting the Tigers down in order in the top of the seventh, Moritz left the Dutchmen needing at least six runs in the bottom of the seventh to extend the game.

Re-entering the game, Reid drew

a one-out walk before advancing to second on a wild pitch. During Smith’s next at-bat, Reid scored when Smith reached base on a dropped third strike.

Dutchmen senior first baseman Nathanael Gregor kept the inning alive reaching on an error with two outs before the game ended on a groundout.

Two days later in the first round of the Class 3, District 8 baseball tournament in Fulton, Owensville saw their season end with a 10-0 loss to Borgia in six innings.

No further information on this game was available at press time.

Cross Country runners. With a large contingency of

young harriers, Owensville began bringing home the hardware with team titles for the varsity girls and runner-up nods at Linn for the JV Dutchmen and OMS Dutchgirls.

Dwayne Clingman’s volleyball squad started their season right out of the gate with a match against Mike Tyree’s Borgia Knights.

Even though Borgia got the bet-ter end of the deal, Owensville im-mediately found out they could play with anyone they faced throughout the season.

Toward the end of the 2011 vol-leyball season, the Dutchgirls made it all the way to the district title game giving Borgia everything they had. Even though they settled for the second-place plaque, Dutchgirl volleyball has a very bright future with an incoming freshman class that did not lose a match as OMS Dutchgirl volleyball players.

More highlights from OHS cross country, Dutchmen football, Dutchgirl softball and Dutchgirl volleyball will be in future install-ments of “Will’ful Thinking” in coming issues of The Republican.

Competing with Baehr in the 1600 and 3200-meter runs, Megan Dunlap placed ninth in the 1600 in a time of 6:01.42 while her younger sister Emmy was 12th in the 3200 with a time of 13:43.02. Both sisters will get to run together for one more year as Megan will be a senior dur-ing the 2012-13 school year.

Charboneau (7th in 14.25) and Doll (8th in 14.57) also made the finals of the 100-meter dash.

Stepping up in the pole vault, freshman Eric Dahl tied for 14th clearing 10-0 and establishing a new PR for himself by a foot.

“Eric (Dahl) kept improving throughout the season and I see good things from him in the future,” Candrl said.

Fellow freshman Matt Pohlmann also cleared 9-0 in the pole vault.

Making the finals of the triple jump as a freshman, Drew Garner posted an eighth-place mark of 38-00.75 to build on for the future. Kiowa Wright also recorded a dis-tance of 34-09 in the event.

Sophomore Joey Oberle ended

his season taking 15th in the long jump with a leap of 17-00.5.

Tyler Fritsch cleared 5-04 in the high jump to sneak into the top 10.

After breaking the nine-minute barrier at conference, the Dutch-men 4x800-meter relay team of Barry Gerber, Dietrich Bombach, Shawnee Wright and Matt Wills took 12th with a time of 9:15.94.

Leading the Dutchmen relay teams was the 4x100 quartet of Ben Angell, Devon Dowler, Oberle and Garner in an eighth-place time of 46.97.

Justin Isom ended his freshman season with a time of 47.93 in the 300-meter hurdles.

Enduring a warm day on the track, Gerber settled for 11th in the 1600 (4:52.10) and 15th in the 3200 (11:12.34). Blaine McKinney also ran the 3200 in a time of 11:16.41.
