Mr.Moncur’s Summer Assignment 2020

Choice Board Summer Choice 2020 Grade 3

Math  CCC (Math & Writing)  CCC Science/Social Studies

Power Standard:

I can compare two fractions with the same numerator or denominator using symbol >, =, or <, and justify the solution.

I can develop and apply comprehension skills to the reading process by using illustrations, monitoring comprehension, and summarizing a story’s beginning, middle, and end to determine the central message, lesson, or theme.

Predict and investigate that water can change from a liquid to a solid (freeze), and back again (melt), or from a liquid to a gas (evaporation), and back again (condensation) as the result of temperature changes.

Activity #1

Log into Moby Max or iknowit.com. Complete the Comparing Fractions lesson assigned to you.

Select your favorite book or a book you are currently reading. Generate 5 to 10 questions that the story could answer (Questions should be based on the characters, setting, plot, theme.)

Log into Flocabulary. Watch the video on “Matter” and complete the Read/Respond and Quiz assigned to you..

Activity #2

Card Game (2 players). Each player selects two cards, a numerator and denominator, Record your fraction (the smaller number is on top and the larger number is on the bottom) and then determine whose fraction is the largest (draw a model of the fractions, if you need to). The winner keeps all four cards. Play continues until the cards are gone. *If you don’t have cards, you can make your own set (write 1-10 on separate pieces of paper, make 3 sets).

Have a parent or sibling Read Aloud a descriptive passage from a book. While listening, close your eyes and create a mental image of what the passage is about. Then, draw a picture of your mental image. Discuss the picture you drew (What words or details from the passage helped you create your picture?)

Explore: Design a poster or create a chart and record 5 examples of each state of matter (solid, liquid, gas) you find in your house or neighborhood.

Activity #3

Go to the link below. You are feeding fish with fractions to the dolphin with an equal fraction. https://mrnussbaum.com/fraction-dolphins

Read a book with a member of your family and make a story map that identifies the characters, setting, and retells the story using beginning, middle and end.

With a parent or adult, get a 1/4 cup of water to put in the freezer. Once frozen, take it out of the freezer to thaw then put on the stove to boil and cause it to evaporate. Make predictions to how long you think it will take to change between states.

Activity #4

Draw a picture of two pizzas with at least 6 slices on each. Shade in a portion on

Go to Epic. Listen to the book “I Need My Monster” and complete the quiz

Get on Brainpop and watch the changing states of matter. Create a chart with a

Art  Prepare an artistic snack/meal for your family! Use what is available in the pantry. Think of bright colors (carrot sticks, scrambled eggs, jelly, salsa etc.), food you can build upwards with (crackers & peanut butter, celery sticks, mashed potatoes) or maybe stuff you can cut into neat shapes (tortilla quesadillas, pb&j sandwiches). When done, it should look neat and taste yummy! (Don’t mix peanut butter and salsa...eww.)

Music  EP.1.A.4 Read standard rhythmic notation in 2/4, 3/4, 4/4 meter signatures with bar lines consisting of: whole note/rest, quarter note/rest, half note/rest, eighth note pairs PP.1.B.3 Demonstrate dynamics (note: piano, forte, crescendo, decrescendo)

Write a 16 beat rhythm using quarter notes , quarter rests , and eighth notes , which all get ONE beat. Choose a tempo (fast or slow) and tap a steady beat, then perform your rhythm to your beat. Once you get it on the beat, add some dynamics (piano or soft, and forte or loud). Perform it for someone at home or send a video to your music teacher’s Google Classroom.

Math and Diets  Nutrition week: This week we will watch a short video on “GO, SLOW, WHOA Foods for Healthy Eating” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I5gPGO369eo    “GO” Foods can be eaten any time. They are the healthiest foods such as fruits and vegetables and skim milk. Reminder for “GO Foods” is “Go Ahead! Eat these foods whenever you want.”  “SLOW Foods”. Reminder - the word “slow” starts with the letter “S” and also the word “sometimes” starts with the letter “s”. So you can SOMETIMES eat these foods. “SLOW or Sometimes Foods” would be foods that you don’t eat everyday like pizza, pancakes and red meat.  The “WHOA Foods” reminder is “WHOA! Should I really eat these foods?” Examples of “WHOA Foods” are candy, chips, ice cream, and pop. These foods are the least healthy and the MOST LIKELY to cause weight problems!!! This is not to say that you can never eat these foods just as long as you do so only occasionally.    Each Day of the week.

Plan a vacation:  If you could go anywhere, where would you go?  Pick somewhere to visit (Disney, Branson, St. Louis for example). Decide how long you will be there.  Decide if you’re going to fly or drive and how much that will cost.  Once you decide where you want to visit, research what you want to do while you are there. Then write out what you would see while there, where would you stay, where would you eat.   You also need to plan a budget for your hotel, sightseeing, food and souvenirs  You need to plan what to pack to wear. Is it a warm climate or a cold climate.  Finally write out a schedule of when you will arrive and depart and what you will do each day.  Have fun and be creative!

adjustments and tweak the rules as you go along. The main thing is to have fun!

Art Make a picture of your animal in its natural habitat.  -As you draw it think about how many legs it has, does it have a head, what do its feet look like, does it have horns, and any other extra things you might want to add to your creature.  -Where does it live and what does that look like? Is it a desert, forest, mountain, garbage heap? Add some things that would help us identify its home. -As you color it does it have stripes, spots, patterns or markings? Does it have fur or a carapace? Does it camouflage with its surroundings or stick out? -Most importantly: have fun making your animal, make it silly or scary but have a good time. *If you want to go above and beyond, make it out of play dough or another material.  Standard: I3C: Theme: Create an original artwork that communicates ideas about animals and things.
