Activity #2  

 

Using a deck of cards (or 2 sets of numbers 0-9 written as flash cards) - turn over top two and write down the number it makes - do the same with the next two. Add the numbers - repeat 5 times. Do the same but subtract the numbers - repeat 5 times.   

Read a story - use the 5 W’s (who, what, when, where, why/how) to retell the beginning, middle, and end of your story. 

Take two pieces of fruit. Using your five senses (taste, smell, see, hear, feel) make observations that describe each fruit. Explain how they are alike, and how they are different. Toma dos frutas. Usando tus 5 sentidos, nota como son. Explique cómo son similares y no similares.

Activity #4   

Using your favorite cereal as counters, create addition and subtraction number sentences using the following digits (i.e. 139+864)  

 

1, 3, 9, 8, 6, 4 

 

Read/reread a fictional text. What was the lesson/moral of the story (i.e. don't be a copycat, love wins, etc.) ?  

How can we help the Earth? Set up a recycling bin or think of another way to take care of the Earth’s resources.  Recycle/reuse as many cans, bottles, books, aluminum, and newspapers that you can. You can even turn that old t-shirt into a cleaning rag. Create a plan to recycle/reuse household objects.        

 2nd Grade Specials Activities 

 

Art  CIRCLE MAGIC! Make a circle art using items around your home. STEPS: 1) find circle items around the house – coins, lids, canned food, soda caps or anything circular. Make sure and ask permission before you use something. 2) Get a piece of paper and draw a circle around your item.  3) Draw different size circles.  4) You can draw circle patterns, you can overlap your circles, you can make planets and moons. 5) Color in your circles with crayons, colored pencils. You can also shade your circles with  a pencil some lighter or darker.   

Music  Trace, print, or draw the notes below. Think of creative ways to color the notes that will help you remember the name of each note.

PE  Each day be PHYSICALLY active for at least 60 minutes. This could be 1 block of 60 minutes or broken up into 2 or 3 blocks of time. Go to http://www.spnpe.com/CompassPE.html Find 2-3 Physical Activities that you enjoy doing and participate for 60 minutes each day.  

Create a “Daily Physical Activity Log” and write down your Physical Activities and the minutes you participated for each day. Keep this information in your “PE Portfolio”. You may also use any equipment that you may have at home. Activities can include: Jumping Rope, Fitness Workouts, Dance videos, Yoga, Basketball Dribbling Skills, etc.

Activity #1  

Watch the Khan Academy video about 1 step addition and subtraction word problems. https://youtu.be/fGok2nHOjnI  Solve these problems:  1. Nick went to the zoo and saw 7 

elephants and 3 monkeys. Write an equation to solve.  

2. Sam had 10 pieces of gum and gave away some. He had 2 left. Write an equation to solve.  

3. Amayah put 12 blue beads on a necklace. Then she put 4 red beads. Write an equation to solve. 

Write your own word problem and teach how you would solve it to a family member or friend!

Roll 2 dice and write the number down. Roll the dice again to get a second set of numbers. Write an equation for the number sets using the add/sub symbol. Do this until you have 4 addition and 4 subtraction problems. Write your equation and solution down on a piece 

Read your favorite math book with a family member, when you're finished, discuss the

Design 2 paper airplanes that are either different styles or different types of paper. Test each airplane for flight range from different distances. Record your information on a piece of paper. Keep data for at least 4 flight trials.

Tell if you would add or subtract. Then solve the problem. Use the calendar to help you out.  1.This month it was cloudy 7 days and sunny 23 days.   How many more days was it sunny then cloudy? _____.  2.Can you make a new problem? Fill in the blanks.   This month it was cloudy ____ days and sunny ____ days? How many more days was it sunny then cloudy? ___.

a. What are you thinking will happen as you build the first tower? 

b. Before you start the tower what do you think will happen with more cards? 

2. Build the second tower using 12 cards or more? 3. Write your answers for each tower. 4. Compare the towers by telling the strengths and weaknesses of the towers. 

  

2nd Grade Specials Activities  

Art and Math  Personifying objects: Take a picture with your ipad of an ordinary object(fruit, vegetable, chair, bed, tv, etc).Then use a drawing app to draw on your picture to give it humanistic features like, eyes, mouth, nose, arms, hair, etc) Remember to share through google classroom. 

Music and Music  Find something in your house you can scrape, something you can tap, and something you can shake. Use those items to create a beat with different repeated patterns (ostinati). Rap, sing, or recite a rhythm over your beat.  

Healthy living   Do your daily stretches/warmups. Challenge a family member to do the most push ups in 30 seconds. Next challenge a family member to see who can do the most sit-up. Last, challenge a family member to a race. Keep track of how many situps and pushups you do and try to improve every day. Log all your activities and share. 

Cultural piece  Compare the cultural characteristics of regions in the state: Celebrate Culture! 4th of July & Memorial Day & Labor Day

I can find combinations of coins that equal a given amount.  

I can write simple declarative, imperative, exclamatory and interrogative sentences. 

Develop a simple sketch, drawing or physical model to illustrate how the shape of an object helps it function as needed to solve a problem. 

Activity #1  Count a collection of coins. Draw a picture of the coins in two different 

ways.  

Write a letter to a friend from your class. Include the date, greeting, body, closing and signature in your letter. Tell your friend what you’ve been up to or what you miss about school. Be sure to include at least 2 questions in your letter.

Activity #2  Using weekly store ads-   1.Choose 3 items, that cost different amounts, from the ads  2. Show how you can pay for each of these items two different ways.  

Think of a favorite entertainer, athlete, or any famous person that you would like to meet. Pretend that you are going to interview this person. Write 5 questions you would like to ask the person. Write 3 statements about yourself that you would like to tell them. Be sure you are writing in complete sentences using capital letters and punctuation marks. 

Think about the shape of an umbrella. How does the shape help it keep you dry? Draw a sketch to show how the shape blocks water.

Find a toy. Take a picture. Explain how the shape of the toy affects how the toy works. Label the picture with the important parts and shapes that help the toy work. (example: a toy car has wheels so it can roll).  

Activity #4

Draw a picture of a plate and a cup. Compare the shapes and explain how the shape changes how they are used.  

2nd Grade Specials Activities 

Art  Create a “chair” or “table” out of items in your house. Try stacking books, cans, pillows, stuffed animals, boxes, anything! Furniture artists like Maximo Riera (makes “animal chairs”) and Gavin Munroe (his chairs are living plants) are always thinking creatively. 

Music  EP.1.A.4 Read standard rhythmic notation in 2/4, 3/4, 4/4 meter signatures with bar lines consisting of: whole note/rest, quarter note/rest, half note/rest, eighth note pairs 

Write a 12 beat rhythm using quarter notes and eighth notes . Remember both kinds of notes are ONE beat each. Choose a tempo (fast or slow) and tap a steady beat, then recite your rhythm to your beat. Perform it for someone at home or send a video to your music teacher’s Google Classroom. 

Mindfulness  Complete 3 guided dances and 1 mindfulness activity, or turn on some music and dance for 10 minutes. 

Library  2.1.W Apply a writing process to develop a text for audience and purpose. Signs of Summer are everywhere! Create a journal for the week recording what you see (flowers, weather, insects and animals). You can record your findings on paper or in the following apps on your iPad: Notes, Slides, Science Journal. Insert photos and videos to support your findings.

Eric had 32 flowers; yellow and pink  He gave 12 yellow flowers away. How many pink flowers are left? Write your equation to solve the problem.    Add your pink flowers into the vase.     

Read a book by your favorite author. Research the author to find out more about them. Write them a letter. Some things to include in the letter: 

- Explain why you like their books 

- Ask how they got the ideas for their books 

- Ask who their favorite character they’ve created is 

- Tell them about your favorite story you’ve written 

 

Make a beautiful poster sharing a positive message and pictures to share with your neighborhood.  Hang your poster in your front window for your neighbors to enjoy!  Examples might include:   

1. Stay Safe 2. Be Safe 3. Missing You 4. We are in this together 5. Wash your hands 6. Stay inside 7. I care about you 8. Sending Love 9. I love you 

  

PE: Make up a Obstacle Course: Ideas: crawl under table, jump over pillows, zig zag through toys, make a sock shot in a basket, do 10 jumping jacks, step up on a chair then jump off. Walk backwards, do push ups, low crawl, wall push ups.  Just make it fun and safe, then record some part of the course and post it on your google classroom….Have fun, if you can go outside, also do some activities outside...Be Safe….Have Fun…….

You are an engineer...Use a deck of cards to build the tallest structure/house/castle possible without it falling over. If you can do one tall structure, then challenge yourself to use 2 decks of cards. (Compass)   

Pick your favorite book. Write a script explaining why the book is your favorite, and why someone else should read it. Practice your script until you feel confident saying it. Then, record your book commercial and upload it for the world to see!.

 Take pictures of what you find.  

Communicate with 3 family members, you do not live with, by telephone, text or video chat to see how they are doing during this time.

  

ART Bubble Art: Simply color bubble mix with food coloring and blow bubbles onto paper - as the bubbles land and pop, they create beautiful works of art. It goes without saying that this project is best done outdoors.  Tips: Don’t have bubble mix? Use dish soap and water. Don’t have food coloring? Have an adult take apart markers and remove ink from the tube into bubble mixture. Don’t have a bubble wand? Cut off the end of a bottle or remove both ends of a marker. 

    Write positive messages on your driveway or front porch, using chalk. If you do not have chalk, write positive messages to your family members.
