It’s necessary to also extend those courtesies to consumers. “What I have discovered is that, while you do hold people accountable for paying their debts, you also treat them with understanding and sensitivity,” says the founder and CEO of Choice Recovery in Columbus. “It’s important to recognize that most people, from time to time, have trouble meeting their financial obligations.” While many of his com- petitors use “aggressive” and “heartless” tactics to collect debt, Silverstein operates differently. “That’s not what I—and Choice Recovery—are about,” he says. The company has success- fully recovered more than $200 million in gross revenues, with payment in full from more than 1.5 million consumers. Choice Recovery specializes in health- care, education, government and commercial collections. Silverstein trains his employ- ees to understand that, for the most part, consumers want to pay their debts, but are financial- ly unable to. Therefore, employ- ees must listen and work with the person to find a solution, says Silverstein, who has worked in the industry for 19 years. “I believe it is vital—and work hard to instill this in every em- ployee—to approach each debtor as a friend,” he says. “I challenge my team to listen, negotiate, assist, and spend as much time— and as many phone calls—as necessary to find a solution.” But the company does more than negotiate. With the launch of its [re]start program in 2014, Choice Recovery began taking things a step further. The program helps find jobs for people in collections who are unemployed, but who want to re- gain control over their lives and finances, Silverstein says. The free program assists people with writing resumes, searching for jobs, completing employment applications and interviewing techniques. “Since [re]start has begun, more than 430 people have been placed in new jobs, so we recognize that this is a worth- while investment of our time and resources,” Silverstein says. “Through [re]start, Choice Re- covery has blazed a new trail for collection agencies.” Silverstein also recognizes how crucial his employees are to the success of the business and puts a lot of effort into company culture. “In the beginning my goal as CEO was to keep every em- ployee happy. What I discovered was, it’s really not about that,” he says. “Rather, it is about getting the best out of each and every person associated with my company—helping them build strong characters and become the very best versions of them- selves.” A key component of achiev- ing that is communication and honesty, Silverstein says. Em- ployees are encouraged to bring issues and challenges to light so that the team can work together to deal with them, he says. New employees are told they will be expected to share their thoughts and concerns with company leaders. “So when it comes to being honest, telling the truth and providing meaningful feedback, they see me doing it first from day one. And it’s a two-way street,” he says. “Employees receive feedback from me and, in return, I expect feedback from them.
