ARRI Ballast Technologies

ARRI Ballasts

From the introduction of metal halide discharge lighting in the 1970’s, ballasts have been an integral part of the ARRI Lighting family. Since then, the range has developed into the reliable, robust and efficient components recognised world- wide as the industry standard for film, theatre and events.

ARRI was a pioneer in the introduction of electronic ballasts which have now become industry standard. ARRI offers a comprehensive range of choke and electronic ballasts for mains and battery operation, including 19” multi-function ballasts - plug in technology for the universal connection of different power lampheads. Latest developments include high-speed ballasts for digital video and new features including CCL cable loss compensation which maintaining full output even with long head cables.

Today, ARRI Ballasts feature state of the art electronics and offer easy maintenance, automatic fault detection and extensive status indicators along with impeccable reliability and safety. A wide range of cables and accessories completes the ARRI range.

ARRI EVENT Systems

ARRI EVENT Systems have set the standard for exhibitions, car shows and other events where daylight sources are required. The EVENT System saves set-up time and costs with improved cable management. Special EVENT Arrisun and ARRI X heads are supplied by a 19” 4U pack via a single multicore cable. For more details please refer to the EVENT Brochure.

Location Multifunction Ballasts

Location Multi-function Ballasts save space on set and make plugging up discharge heads almost as easy as tungsten. A rolling rack can power up to 18 lampheads via multi-core cables. Standard ARRI heads from 200 W to 4 kW can be used.

Intelligent splitter boxes are available in two types: the 2/6/12 can supply 6 x 200 or 575 W heads or up to 3 x 1.2 kW heads driven by pairs of channels while the 2.5/4 splitter operates up to three 2.5 or 4 kW heads.

The boxes identify the combination connected so the appropriate power is supplied without risk.

Boost Ballasts

High speed filming can demand very high light levels for a short time. HMI is ideal for this, producing 3-4 times as much visible light as tungsten but with less heat. Boost Ballasts over-drive standard 4 kW lampheads to 8 kW giving the high-est possible light output for high-speed photography with smaller and lower cost lampheads.

Both 19” rack mounted and stand-alone versions are available with a range of remote control options.

Choke Ballasts

Where flicker-free lighting is not required, ARRI choke ballasts offer a robust, low-cost solution. Choke ballasts are optionally available with DMX remote control, ideal for theatre and event applications.

High Speed Ballasts

The advent of a new generation of high-speed video cameras has created new lighting challenges. High speed video, previously the preserve of specialist industrial film-makers has now become mainstream. ARRI is pleased to introduce a new generation of 1000 Hz High Speed Ballasts that meet the challenge of modern digital high-speed photography with ease.

From experience gained making High Speed 300 Hz ballasts for the industrial market and developed in co-operation with Weisscam, this new technology offers worry-free shooting with standards of exposure and colour stability suitable for commercials and sport. 1000 Hz ballasts are available for lampheads up to 4 kW and 300 Hz ballasts up to 18 kW.

Battery Ballasts

For ultimate portability, lampheads up to 400 W can be battery powered from 24-36 V battery supplies via Electronic Battery Ballasts. Ballasts can be powered from standard battery technologies including Lead Acid, NiCd, NiMH and Lithium. Battery Ballasts have lightweight extruded aluminium housings for maximum portability allowing for applications such as belt-pack use.

Lightweight Ballasts

ARRI equipment is known for the high robustness demanded for film location work, but for run-and-gun applications lightweight ballasts up to 575 W are available with lightweight extruded aluminium housings, an ideal match for the ARRI Pocket PAR lampheads.

Accessories

To complement the range of ARRI ballasts, available accessories include head-to-ballast cable testers and a newly redesigned Flicker Meter to check the stability of any light source including HMI, fluorescent, LED and display monitors. The new model also includes frequency and light intensity measurement.
