The Bon Secours Hampton Roads Successful Aging Forum began in 1999 as the Successful Aging Conference — a two-hour program with a panel of experts on aging held at different locations, including churches and the three hospitals. The first Successful Aging Forum was held in March of 2003 and fea-tured keynote speaker, Willard Scott. This was the first one to include a celebrity keynote speaker, lunch, and exhibitors. Since 2003, we have enjoyed inspirational messages by Jack LaLane, Ann Jillian, Vicki Lawrence, Hope Mihalap, and Dr. Mehmet Oz. We laughed with Joe Flanagan and Dick Lamb. We exercised with Richard Simmons in 2011. Naomi Judd, Pat Boone, Amy Grant, Mary Wilson, and Tony Orlando entertained us with songs and stories. So as we get ready for the 2018 Successful Aging Forum, let’s celebrate the programs of the past and the friends we shared them with as we move forward and Embrace the Future with the very first Successful Aging Forum Cotillion. You will find information about this new, exciting event in the center of this issue of the magazine.

This is Mary — she had a stroke while at work. Mary is a certified nursing assistant (CNA) at Mary Immaculate Hospital. Approximately four hours into her shift, Mary was taken to the emergency room where she was unable to hear and did not remember what had happened. However, she was able to respond to written questions. Mary was admitted, underwent imaging studies, started on multiple medications, and stabilized. Following her hospitalization, Mary underwent extensive rehabili-tation for several weeks at St. Francis Nursing Center in Newport News. After several weeks of physical therapy, occupational therapy and speech therapy, Mary returned home with very few deficits remaining.

Mary has been employed as a certified nursing assistant at Mary Immaculate Hospital for the last three years. She has also worked as a CNA at St. Francis Nursing facility from 2012-2014. Prior to coming to BSHR, Mary worked for the Veterans Administration, Eastern State Hospital and Lake Taylor Transitional Care Hospital.

According to Mary, she has always been a caregiver — taking care of her mother, father and sister to name a few. She enjoys music, cooking and going to casinos for fun.

Mary would like to take this opportunity to thank Mary Immaculate Hospital and St. Francis Nursing Center for such excellent care. Mary stated, ”They were there for me like family. I am truly blessed.”

Set in Mississippi during the 1960s, Skeeter is a south-ern society girl who returns from college determined to become a writer, but turns her friends’ lives and a Mississippi town — upside down when she decides to interview the black women who have spent their lives taking care of prominent southern families. It turns out they have a lot to say! Along the way, unlikely friendships are forged and a new sisterhood emerges, but not before every-one in town has a thing or two to say themselves when they become unwittingly — and unwillingly — caught up in the changing times.

Bon Secours Ministries is compelled to work towards a more just and humane world where the dignity of all persons is respected. Therefore, in keeping with our Catholic social teaching, we stand with those who seek the common good. Bon Secours advocates for a culture of nonviolence and commits our ministry to actively work to promote sensible and responsible legislation and regulation that result in safer communities.

One area of focus is gun safety. Gun violence poses a risk to the safety of all persons at home, at school, at work and in our communities. Responsible gun ownership is woven into the fabric of our country and our constitution. We should seek to honor our history and at the same time promote the safety of our communities. Several means are available today to improve our safety in our commu-nities through back-ground checks, mental health care and other services for those in need, with preventa-tive approaches to vio-lence most essential.

That is why I want to introduce you to Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense and America’s “Be SMART for Kids” program (www.besmartforkids.org). While we all want to reduce gun violence, and we recognize that owning a gun is a personal decision, but responsible storage is a public safety issue. Every year almost 1,000 children are unintentionally injured or harm themselves when they find unlocked and loaded guns. Research shows that over 1.7 million children live in homes with guns that are not stored responsibly. That is why the Be SMART program was created.

That’s why when it comes to kid’s safety, we’re all in this together!!

Being Smart About Gun SafetyThere are many options available today to help you keep your weapons safe from oth-ers, and still readily available if needed for self-defense. Gun safes can range in size from one small enough to hold 1 revolver and an extra clip, to larger ones that can also hold passports, cash, and other valuables. Many personal safes today open using a fingerprint ID, allowing you to control who has access, and making them easy for you to open quickly.

If it is close to spring that means that the 2018 Virginia General Assembly session is in full swing. It has been a very busy session for health care this session. Most meaningful is the 2 year budget process that is being discussed by our elected officials. This year’s Budget proposal by the outgoing Governor, Terry McAuliffe, contained Medicaid Expansion for over 300,000 uninsured Virginians. As you may recall, the Virginia General Assembly has rejected Medicaid Expansion for the last 4 years. This year could prove to be different. The House of Delegates, led by Speaker of the House, Kirk Cox, has introduced a bill that would make access to health care more accessible for many more Virginians and would tap into Federal dollars that can be provided to support that program.

In order to make this program responsive to Virginians and be fiscally responsible, the House of Delegates has proposed that a demonstration waiver be submitted to the Trump Administration. This would require new Medicaid recipients to have some personal responsibility in their healthcare through community commitment in a variety of ways. Lots of details remain to be resolved but the negotiations are underway. Last Year, Bon Secours Virginia treated over 110,000 uninsured patients at a cost of over $100 million dollars of charity care and Medicaid reimbursement shortfalls. Bon Secours supports these efforts in this year’s General Assembly as we seek to provide Good Help to those in need.

Growing up in a time where trustworthiness and open-ness was the rule of thumb, it is easy to understand why older Americans are more likely to be a victim of identity theft and fraud. We want to remain independent and not be viewed as helpless by family members or caregivers. This is just part of the reason older Americans are targeted by scammers and fall prey to identity theft. However, it may also be a matter of changes in the brain as we age. It is important to see your doctor on an annual basis for a comprehen-sive physical and to talk about any concerns you have about your mental health, as well as physical condition. Whether there is one or many reasons, the truth is aging adults are at a greater risk for fraud and identity theft. Here are 11 things that can help protect you from becoming a victim.

1. Do not give anyone who calls you your bank information or your Social Security number. Only provide private information when you initiate the call.

2. Medicare and Social Security will not call you to ask for private information.

3. There are no fees to obtain a Medicare card or a Social Security card.

4. Never give personal information over the phone.5. Keep your financial and sensitive personal

information secure.6. Review your medical bills for accuracy.7. Ask a family member to make sure your caregiver

is trustworthy. Do a background check.8. Stay up-to-date about current scams.9. Control your financial activity. If necessary, talk to

a trusted family member or financial advisor. 10. Get advice and sign up for identity theft protection. 11. Register your phone number with the “National

Do-Not-Call Registry” by calling 1-888-382-1222 to avoid unwanted calls. This will not stop all calls, like political support during elections, but will minimize telemarketing calls.

There are many resources available to seniors and others who wish to learn more. For further assistance, please call the Aging Committee’s Fraud Hotline at 1-855-303-9470.
